I am in the midst of the final steps in setting my my new Win 8 system.
I have a Win XP and Win 8 computer on my home network. I believe that I have set up file and printer sharing correctly. I can access the files and printer on the XP system from the Win 8 system. However, when I attempt to access the Win 8 files from the Win XP system, I get a long delay (about a minute or two) and then it asks me for the User Name & Password. I enter them and then and it works fine.
If I try to print on the printer attached to the Win 8 system from the XP system, I get a printer error unless I have already signed in with the ID & PW when accessing files. It never asks me for an ID & PW before attempting to print.
On the Win 8 system, I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings".
The Win XP system has previously been correctly sharing files and printers with another XP system for some time and I haven't changed any settings on the XP computer.
Both the XP and Win 8 systems are assigned the same Workgroup name.

I came to some trouble installing CorelDraw software which apparently uses for it's setup launcher web active container performed by IE core. If I launch setup, the setup windows is evidently noninitialized showing the top warning band about active content being blocked for security reasons. Even allowing active content by selecting from the top bar menu doesn't make the setup continue. So now I'd need to temporarily bypass all IE's security checks, ie. allow everything. What I already did was browsing the security tab in IE options and allowing most of the choices in branches ActiveX controls and plugin modules + Scripting (Local Intranet). On Advanced tab I have checked in Security branch Allow execution of active content from CD discs on this computer + Allow execution of active content from files on this computer. Nothing of these affecting the installer to run (ie. I still see then active content blocking bar).

My laptop tends to install all the printers on the network where I work. I dont use any of those printers and having them installed is pointless and a pain. I can delete them, but it will go and install them all again. Is there anyway I can disable this so it doesn't keep doing it?

I'm using a third party tile creator (Oblytile) to make tiles for the Start screen. It works fine, but I still get a User Account Control notification when I'm trying to launch the apps even though the app it's technically asking about is Microsoft Windows Based Script Host!
Is there anyway I can stop the notification for this program without disabling the thing all together?

Initially on Win7, I was manually updating Security Essentials when was offline from this link:
How to manually download the latest definition updates for Microsoft Security Essentials
You choose x86 or x64 and go from there.
What's not mentioned, is that you can use the same links to update Windows Defender on Windows 8 as well.
I've been doing this for quite some time without issues. So the two programs are very much alike.

Since about 4 days, I'm having various problems primarily on the internet.
1) All sorts of downloads from the internet first load normally, then stop at 99% and usually dont finish, some end 5 minutes later, resulting in a damaged file. Example: Downloading a song this way makes it randomly jump parts of the song in short intervals (a song of 3:50 minutes would then be in my itunes with a duration of 3:46 due to the random jumps); downloading CCleaner and similar programs did not work at all (not even a damage file).
2) Pictures on the internet become "puzzled" and colors change randomly. Example:
3) Only tested this on youtube - videos load 10x slower than before the issue + some flash plugin keeps crashing (also never happened before - even with 50+ tabs).
4) Frequently sites do not load (they stay white).
5) A "firefox update recommendation" and a "flash player update site" with untrustworthy URLs often randomly open, sometimes even 5 times in 5 seconds + I suddenly get overloaded with random advertisement from the left, bottom and right screen sides.
THE PROBLEM WAS A PLUGIN CALLED "NET-CRAWLER" >uninstalled it, and everything worked out.

When trying to print from Devices "charm" in Microsoft Reader, my default printer is not shown. It shows up in Printers on the desktop. Reader does show, however, a fax version of my printer, which is NOT installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the printer....no change.
I'm using a HP Officejet 7310 printer, which has the most current driver, and works in all other Windows apps.

I backup my data from my Windows 8 computer to an external hard drive regularly using File History but I also transfer some of this data to several other computers with various operating systems (Windows 7 & Ubuntu being the primary ones) and I noticed that, while it is simple to restore/transfer files to Windows 8 computers through the File History menu, on these other operating system one is forced to navigate to the folders on the drive and copy the files over.
This wouldn't be a problem except that all the files saved with File History have a long time stamp appended to their file names.
Is there any way to disable this feature? I don't care so much about having to copy the files manually to other operating systems as I do having to rename them all after doing so.

This is a problem that has persisted under fresh installs of Windows 7 and Windows 8. My laptop (Samsung Series 9) won't connect to any network that is operating on the 2.4GHz band. It shows up as a normal network, but trying to connect always ends with the error message: "Can't connect to this network."
The WiFi card is an Intel Centrino 6300. Before someone tells me to go connect to a different network,

I just got Windows 8 a week or so ago and I left it on today. I came home and my internet suddenly couldn't find any networks. I googled how to get it back, but when I go to pc settings there is no Wireless tab. I cant turn it on, I've tried reinstalling my wireless card LAN driver, restarting my PC and doing a system restore to the last recommended time, nothing works.

Recently, my Windows 8 has been working fine, but when I woke up this morning, I was not able to access the Internet. It has been int he same spot for the last few days and Internet was perfect, but this morning, it would not connect to any. Basically, it won't even list any. I know I'm not too far away and I'm sure it's still working because:
1) My father and sister are using it.
2) I've gone to two different houses with different internet, nothing changed.
I've been trying to fix it since 7 this morning and I feel like I'm going to just burst into tears of frustration. My audio is also not working, but I care more of getting the Internet working. And my computer will not allow me to turn on Windows Security Center.

I have a customer that brought in his windows 8.1 machine because after responding to a "Call from Microsoft" he let them into his computer. I would like to preface this with the fact that in the pact he has indeed let the real Microsoft into his machine to assist with 8.1 setup so I don't think he realized until too late that it was a scam.
I haven't seen this type of lockout since the days of windows 2000. I cant even boot with a cd. I have checked and reset the bios to no avail.

I've ran the Microsoft baseline security analyzer and it tells me the following:
Incomplete Updates A previous software update installation was not completed. You must restart your computer to finish the installation. If the incomplete installation was a security update, then the computer may be at risk until the computer is restarted.
I've restarted my computer several times and my computer says everything is up to date and completed?

I have network and printer connection problems. I need to ask some basic questions before giving details.
Using new Sagemcom F@st 1704N combo modem/router (replacing an old fried Sagemcom 4300 single function modem) wired to a previously used Linksys/Cisco 610N router which was, and is wired to 3 WAPs in more remote locations.
Are these assumptions correct?
1 The new network SSID is coming from the 1704 combination modem router.
2 The old network SSID is broadcast by the remote WAPs, but not by the old 610N device.
3 Can a network printer (Brother MFC-8810 DW wireless network device) be configured to work with 2 or more wireless networks at the same time.
4 As a workaround is it it possible to configure a Windows 8.1 laptop computer using Bluetooth to connect to the router and printer.

For some reason I can connect fine when I plug in my wireless receiver port into it, But 30 seconds after I plug it in, the bars disappear And a red X appears over it, if you click on it it'll say no networks found.... The only way to fix it is to plug it in and after 30 seconds it happens again...I'm only getting this on my computer, And it's gotten really bad recently, I've tried replacing the reciever, But that fixed it for maybe an hour....

In prior versions of Windows before Windows 8, it was very easy to refresh your network list. This would allow you to see ALL of wireless networks in your area that your WiFi card could detect.
My Windows 8 only allows me to see the wireless networks that it wants me to see.
How do I see all Windows 8 networks within range? I have searched but I cannot find anything.

Recently upgraded my laptop to Windows 8.1 and I cannot see any 5Ghz wireless networks, even though they are present (I am able to successfully see and connect using other devices including a Windows 7 laptop). I can see 2.4 Ghz networks and connect no problem. I have upgraded the wifi driver to the latest Windows 8.1 version for the Intel Wireless-N 7260 card, v16.6.0.8 but no luck.

Windows 8.1, Broadcom 802.11n network card&driver,
My computer stopped recognizing the wireless networks at my university - oddly enough, some other networks elsewhere can be found (although I cannot test if I can actually connect to them, since they are passworded/not mine).
I followed the 3 steps of Network Posting Tips
Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector showed nothing: Connection - Broadcom 802.11n network card - NA, everything under Wireless and Addresses also NA. No networks.
My home adsl modem works.

I have an Asus computer running windows 8. When I open the network connections I cant see the list of available networks. I see my own connection to the internet which is named Network but that is all I see. when I check it on my laptop also running windows 8 I see a full list of available networks. Is there a setting in windows that will allow me to see this or is something blocking the list from being displayed.

The icon in the lower right of my desktop tells me that I have networks available, but is not currently connected. When I click it to open the little box that has the available networks listed, nothing happens other than the icon shading changing letting me know it actually has been clicked. No box opens. Ive tried restarting and even creating a new user, but nothing worked
I got the idea from my roommate to boot it in safe mode, which I did, but now I can't log in due to it asking me for a password that i dont use. I used a 4 digit pin to log in, and it's now asking me for a password. I've tried every password I can think of, but I can't get it, and there doesn't seem to be a "I forgot my password" option.

I have several computers on my Wireless/Wired Network. Wireless is dual band and Secured with WP2 Password. Basically on several of my PCs I can see connections to my neighbours computers showing as Windows Media Player Icons. When I first noticed this I fully restored my router (Western Digital) creating new SSIDs and Passwords, however I can still see these computers.
I'm not personally bothered that I can see them as I can always click remove device, I'm more interested WHY I can see them and Can they see my computers as I do have some without Password Protected sharing as I assumed only devices on my network could access these.
My PCs are Running a Mix of Windows 8.1 and 7 and both can see the 2 neighbour computers. I have homegroup set up with a secured password too.

I have 2 Microsoft accounts. I have enabled 2 step verification for both of them. With one account, I was able to enter my cell phone number to complete the process, so I would receive a text message if a device I haven't set to trusted tries to log in to that account. I tried the same process on the second account, and whenever I try to enter the same cell phone number, I get an error page that the service is 'temporarily unavailable'. I have tried every combination of entering the cell phone number that I can think of, and nothing works for that second account.
With the first account, I was using the Opera browser to enter the information. With the second account, I was using IE 10. With the second account, I get an e-mail with a verification code if an untrusted device tries to log in. This is OK, but I would prefer to receive a text to my cell phone instead, as I do not always have such instant access to my e-mail account.
Or can you not use the same cell phone number for 2 accounts?
Edited to add: This is the exact message I get when I try to have MS send a code to my cell phone:
There's a temporary problem with the service. Please try again. If you continue to get this message, try again later.
I've been doing some research online this evening, doing a search with that message. It looks like this is pretty hopeless. Once people see this message in relation to any MS services, there seems to be no solution for it. I guess I should just be grateful that I at least haven't been locked out of my Windows Live account entirely, since Windows 8 is so tied to being able to connect to one's Microsoft account. Of course, the account I use for my throw-away Hotmail account works just fine.
The format I've used for the phone number is (XXX) XXX-XXXX . I've tried variations of that with brackets, spaces, and hyphens, nothing works, but at least e-mail verification still does.

I am using the N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router DGND3700v2 This has 2 channels 2.5ghz and 5ghz .
On my main desktop windows 8 has sucessfully found and connected wirelessly to the 2.5ghz connection. However, when I want to do video streaming the 5ghz connection would be better.
On my other devices I can search / scan for all available connections and I can see both the 2.5 and the 5 connections. For example, my laptop running windows 7 can see both connection and I can choose which one i want to connect too.
However, Windows 8 seems to have locked into the 2.5ghz connection and cannot see the 5ghz connection . Is there a way to force Windows 8 to scan again so it can see the 5ghz connection ?
