Hardware Drivers :: Disabling Auto Network Printer Install?
May 30, 2014
My laptop tends to install all the printers on the network where I work. I dont use any of those printers and having them installed is pointless and a pain. I can delete them, but it will go and install them all again. Is there anyway I can disable this so it doesn't keep doing it?

I have a Gateway NV52L15U amd a8-based 15" laptop with win 8.it works pretty well except for a few things that I suspect are related, and I suspect all three are due to how 8 is managing the drivers of the devices
- Network performance, in terms of starting up, latching the WIFI AP successfully, and getting online, is unreliable. oddly, it seems that it does not like disabling the Ethernet [CAT5] device, leaving the WIFI enabled. If I leave both enabled, wifi performance seems more stable [gaining and holding the connection]
- When I disable the CAT5 connection using the windows 8 adapter settings pane, the utility will hang, but not consistently. sometimes it hangs until it is forced to stop via taskmanager or restart, but not always. sometimes it merely takes a VERY long time - showing the hated hourglass while it takes as long as 7-8 minutes.
- Shutdowns and/or restarts can take an extremely long time. However, it seems again that if both network adapters are enabled [builtin wifi and builtin Ethernet] the reboot or shutdown seems to go a bit more normally.
- Sometimes the WIFI will not actually connect, as evidenced by IE and/or Chrome being unable to access the network. if I check windows using the taskbar widget, it will show the system "Connected to .." the AP and having "Internet Access". That little utility is mis-reporting. When I DISABLE the WIFI adapter via control panel util, the little taskbar widget may, or may not, still show the WIFI Device as "Connected".... I assume that the adjustment of that feedback mechanism is caught waiting for something, so slow to respond to the disabling of the device
Yes, I have uninstalled via windows both devices AND their drivers, and reinstalled each using fresh, checked driver files from Gateway/Acer. all the issues were there before and after.

Windows detects my Ricoh AC104 on a wireless network but insists it's an HP 5Si MX and installs that driver. When it adds the printer, it loads the driver automatically and without choice or prompt. Perhaps the misidentification has something to do with the printer driver in between (Hawking HMPS1U). I need to force it to use the printer driver from Ricoh, but I've had no luck so far. Some things I've tried:
1. There's an installation program with the Ricoh driver, but it doesn't see the printer on a wireless network.
2. Going to the advanced options for the printer on the device manager, I can see the driver info but Windows will not permit changes. I tried as Administrator also. No difference.
3. Attempting to update the driver just leads to Windows telling me the (wrong) driver is up to date.

I've had to partially reinstal my Windows 8. This means I lost almost all my software and drivers. Now I have the headache again. On previous OS instance I had somehow disabled strict drivers signature (WHQL) control, so I was able to install even unsigned drivers like betas. Now on new OS, the annoying messages popup again and I can't for god remind where I had it disabled.
What I have:
- uninstalled defender
- disabled UAC by sliding the slider down (however UAC is still reported as active in Security Center - a guide to totally get rid of UAC would come useful )
- This hack doesnot remove the problem.
I know for sure this control can be disabled like I was able to install almost everything previously.
Tried also this hack and it doensot work:

This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.
Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.
Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.
The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

I have an Xbox Controller S running on XBCD drivers for my Windows 8 computer. When I used these drivers on my Windows 7 laptop, I used DSEO to enable test mode, and it worked perfectly. Using the same method sends Windows 8 into a BSOD, so that's out of the question. The other solution is to reboot from the Settings menu and manually disable it at EVERY STARTUP. So, is there any other ways to disable DSE without rebooting every time I want to use the controller?
My computer is a 5-month old ASUS M11BB, 3.7GHz AMD A4, with Windows 8 64-bit installed.

I have exhausted my efforts to get an answer out of Microsoft's forums regarding the problem with Windows 8's insistence of flashing straight into the Metro Devices page when installing hardware thus precluding the ability to install a Bluetooth keyboard (or other BT device) without a passkey, an essential element of having a functional BT keyboard in each OS of a multi-boot environment.
Where in the registry is the key that can be altered to stop Windows automatically assigning a passkey? I would imagine it's the same in Windows 7 if I only knew where that was!

I have a windows 8 64 bit system. There is a laptop with windows 7. I have my canon mp470 printer plugged into the windows 8 system via usb. Up until a few days ago we could printer from the windows 7 laptop through the network. I have done 2 things since then. 1.) I uninstalled mcaffee internet security and installed nortons internet security and 2.) I tried to update to windows 8.1 which failed part way through the update then it said the system was reverting back to windows 8.0
Now I can't print from the laptop. (nothing changed on the laptop only on the windows 8 system).

I'm using Windows 8.1 Professional. After the update to 8.1, I can't connect to my network printer which is connected to a Windows XP Home machine. Everything was working before the upgrade. I can currently see, connect, access and modify files on all the computers. I keep getting a message that I don't have permission to access the printer and I can't access the permissions on the Windows XP computer. I'm also using a Windows 7 computer which has no problem accessing the printer.

I have a HP laptop, which I just recently run system recovery on. I had a pixma MP495 series print installed wireless and it was working fine. (wireless) I believe that I had used the compatibility wizard to install it as windows 7. My OS is windows 8.1. When attempting to run setup, I get a window that my computer has a newer version of MP driver in it so it will skip the installation of the driver. It runs the rest of the setup and gets to detecting the printer. I have the USB cable hooked to the computer also. It searchs both wireless and through the USB connection and can not find the printer.

I prefer to keep my home WiFi network from public view by disabling the SSID broadcast, i.e "hiding" the network.
With two modem/routers (a Belkin Play Max F7D4401 ADSL modem/router and now a Cisco EPC2325 DOCSIS modem/router) on two computers (home-built desktop and Acer TM8172T notebook), after the initial connection Windows 8 Pro would not reconnect without tediously re-entering the SSID name and password. Once it does connect, it displays the original SSID name with a new one with an incrementally increasing appended number like:
I was manually deleting them all (except the original) using netsh, until I realized you can <right-click> on an entry in the screen above and choose "Forget this network."
This is the process I go through each time to re-connect. Is there something I'm missing?
I read that if Windows 8 saves too many WiFi connections, it cannot "remember" them to automatically reconnect to them, so on the notebook, I deleted all but wpcTrue (the original), and it now automatically reconnects, although occasionally it will add a new connection with an incrementally increased number -- currently the notebook shows both wpcTrue and wpcTrue 2. I had used the notebook on the road, so had about five WiFi connections saved. On the Desktop my home network is the only WiFi connection I've ever made. However, no matter what I do on the desktop, it NEVER remembers to automatically log on when the SSID is not broadcast.
I even tried manually setting up a connection via Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network, to no avail -- the desktop computer will not automatically reconnect.
I doubt that this is relevant, but the Belkin modem/router, the Belkin USB adapter I use on my desktop computer, and the notebook's Broadcom internal modem are all b/g/n. The Cisco modem/router is b/g.
If I "unhide" the SSID, i.e. broadcast the SSID, all is well in the world. Both computers automatically reconnect to the modem/router. If I hide the SSID, and then disconnect or reboot, the desktop computer will not automatically reconnect.
I just noticed that the pop up WiFi connection column shows "WiFi-2 Off" -- what does the "Off" mean?
And, why is it "-2" ? My notebook just shows "WiFi', period. (The first image with "WiFi (Off)" was from a previous Windows 8 installation on the desktop computer. I decided to change from EFI-boot to non-EFI so reinstalled Windows 8. I simply used the old image as a quick way to show how the connection name assignment runs away.)

My friend got a new computer and is trying, unsuccessfully, to connect to a network printer that he says he has used in the past, in his one man office. He gets his internet access through a wireless router. But the printer is connected via Ethernet cable to a second router that does not have internet access, but does have two printers connected to it.
So his new computer is connected to two different networks, the wireless network, and the wired network. I'm not familiar with having your computer connected to two networks simultaneously.
So my question is, is there any problem doing it like this, and should the network printers show up when the computer does a search in Add Printer? Because it does not find anything right now, not sure if we need to be looking at the printers, the router, or the computer.
He is not able to connect the printers to the wireless router, they are in different rooms. And there are no other computers connected to either network right now.

I installed an HP Office Jet J4580 in Windows 8.1. It works fine.
However when I go to 'Devices and Printers' and right click on that printer (it is the only printer I installed), it shows a drop down box with three Office Jet J4500 Series. I can select any one of them and they all work, for instance when I print a test page.
Screenshot of the dropdown list: View image: Printer properties
It bugs me that there are 3 listings of that one printer.

I have been having an issue in Photoshop selecting a printer. I have already gone to Printers and Devices and set my laser printer as the default printer. However, every once in a while, the default goes away in favor of the One Note 2010 printer. I would like to delete the Fax, One Note 2010, and Microsoft XPS Document Writer printers hoping that Photoshop will realize which is my default printer.
I have Acrobat Pro to make Pdf's. I am running Windows 8 Home.

When I turn my HP LaserJet CP1215 on, on a fresh install of Win 8 Preview the Printer Driver loading icon appears on the taskbar and the green shade goes across as if it's installing correctly. Looking in Control Panel/Printers and devices shows the printer installed and the properties shows the device is working correctly.
However when I try to print in any application no printer is shown, and trying to add a printer runs through the search and finds nothing.
The printer works fine in win 7.

I have a strange behavior when I install virtualbox on my windows8 laptop: Cold boot (windows8 restart) will then fail, whereas shutdown (fast boot enabled) or suspend still work fine.
Laptop is an HP G6 with an SSD installed with 64 bit windows 8. Prior to the virtualbox install all three actions (suspend/shutdown/restart) work fine.
If I install virtualbox (simply installing, not creating any VM), then the next restart will trigger an "automatic repair" screen at boot. Will never terminate. Only way to fix is to escape + F11 and restore a previous restore point. If instead I say shutdown (I have fast boot enabled) or suspend, the system will restart fine at next power on or resume.

For some odd reason my laptop decided to not boot into windows anymore; It would be stuck "boot looping" with my MSI laptop logo and a loading sign (rotating circle). I had Kali Linux and Windows 8 installed on the laptop and neither one would work. So I formatted the entire HDD with all 3 partitions, windows partition, even my storage, and kali's partition because the automatic repair wouldn't work as well; it'll be stuck on Preparing automatic repair and wouldn't get past that screen. I have formatted my HDD with my other windows 7 machine by just right clicking -> format.
I have downloaded a torrented version of Win 8 iso (just for the purposes of installation, my laptop came with a Serial # and I have purchased an product key only version as well). I have burned a DVD of win 8 via winISO and changed my boot options to boot from DVD as well.
Now my problem is, when I am prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD and I press a key I am redirected to Preparing Automatic Repair and back to square one of my problems. I believe the recovery/backup partition is still on there.
I have tried being in both LEGACY and UIEF. UIEF sends me to Preparing Repair and LEGACY takes me to the windows 8 logo with the rotating circle underneath with nothing after that (not sure if it takes a VERY long time or not)

I have several printers at work all hooked up to a samba share so that the whole office can use them. We have Konica Minolta, HP and Lexmarks predominantly but some other brands as well like Kyocera.
I have a fresh Win 8.1 Pro install and i have installed the printer drivers via the Windows update mechanism for all the printers. Some i've added via the samba share some via direct ip connection.
For whatever reason i cannot add/delete or config any of the printer ports as seen in the attached screen cap. I've even tried the windows Administrator account to no avail. UAC is off and i have admin rights to the pc.
I have sought support on freenode's #windows channel and googled the hell out of this topic, to avail.
I cannot replicate the issue in Win 7.

Last night two updates from MS, KB2919355 & KB2961887 were installed. Today the driver for my Epson R3000 printer was gone. Windows 8/8.1 seems to have a problem with this printer, even though Epson claims it is compatible and provides updated drivers. When I updated from Windows 8 to 8.1, it replaced my Epson drivers is a very basic MS generic driver. I had to manually install the Epson drivers again. That was a pain, and took several attempts. Is there a recommended way to install a driver that works?

Laptop: HP 15 n028US. Just purchased and all Windows updates installed.
I installed the recommended full driver from the HP website and it doesn't work. The printer does appear on the list of printers, but it doesn't work. I followed the recommendation to only plug in the USB cable when prompted and it appeared that the installation was successful. I tried a recommendation found in another forum to install the Windows 7 driver. That didn't work either.
Looking for driver that will work?
