Hardware Drivers :: Windows 8 Not Managing Well Enabling / Disabling Network Adapters
Jul 5, 2013
I have a Gateway NV52L15U amd a8-based 15" laptop with win 8.it works pretty well except for a few things that I suspect are related, and I suspect all three are due to how 8 is managing the drivers of the devices
- Network performance, in terms of starting up, latching the WIFI AP successfully, and getting online, is unreliable. oddly, it seems that it does not like disabling the Ethernet [CAT5] device, leaving the WIFI enabled. If I leave both enabled, wifi performance seems more stable [gaining and holding the connection]
- When I disable the CAT5 connection using the windows 8 adapter settings pane, the utility will hang, but not consistently. sometimes it hangs until it is forced to stop via taskmanager or restart, but not always. sometimes it merely takes a VERY long time - showing the hated hourglass while it takes as long as 7-8 minutes.
- Shutdowns and/or restarts can take an extremely long time. However, it seems again that if both network adapters are enabled [builtin wifi and builtin Ethernet] the reboot or shutdown seems to go a bit more normally.
- Sometimes the WIFI will not actually connect, as evidenced by IE and/or Chrome being unable to access the network. if I check windows using the taskbar widget, it will show the system "Connected to .." the AP and having "Internet Access". That little utility is mis-reporting. When I DISABLE the WIFI adapter via control panel util, the little taskbar widget may, or may not, still show the WIFI Device as "Connected".... I assume that the adjustment of that feedback mechanism is caught waiting for something, so slow to respond to the disabling of the device
Yes, I have uninstalled via windows both devices AND their drivers, and reinstalled each using fresh, checked driver files from Gateway/Acer. all the issues were there before and after.
My laptop tends to install all the printers on the network where I work. I dont use any of those printers and having them installed is pointless and a pain. I can delete them, but it will go and install them all again. Is there anyway I can disable this so it doesn't keep doing it?
I have suddenly had a strange problem occur. Everytime I restart my Windows 8.1 desktop my internet connection speed drops from it's normal 50Meg to around 3Meg when running any speedtest programme. The only way to cure this is to uninstall & re-install my network adapters through device manager. All is ok then until my next reboot & then it all happens again. It is the same on both the Ethernet connection & the wireless adapter. I have tried re-installing drivers etc to no avail. Something strange about my network setup. I have also ran various virus scans but nothing showed up. This suddenly started last Saturday & I cannot see what could of caused it, haven't installed any new programmes or anything.
All my other devices are ok including a Windows 8.1 laptop.
I'm using a relatively new HP Split X2 (bought new in Dec.), and almost every day I lose internet connection due to wireless adapters being missing. I have only been using the computer to watch Netflix and listen to music. Usually the internet disconnects in the middle of an episode on Netflix, and after being on hold with HP for over an hour tonight
There are too many tap windows adapters and tap win32 adapters in my network and sharing centre> network adapter. it keeps increasing and decreasing automatically. but i only need ethernet to connect to my broadband. how to get rid of these?
Using Windows 8.0 all up to date. I am trying to set up a DD-wrt router with a default IP Address of 192.168.1.1 which is also the default Gateway.
The previous router had 192.168.0.1 as the Gateway and I had given the laptop I am using a static IP of 192.168.0.10
When I try to access the DD-wrt it starts to work OK, but then hangs. I checked the "Properties" for the Network card and it keeps putting the old Static IP back. I go to Advance and Remove the old IP address, but it stuffs the old one back in again.
I tried using ipconfig /release but it says it can't do anything without the device connected. I feel like I am in a Hamster wheel from the Twilight Zone.
This is what "Properties" looks like after I make the changes.
192.168.1.11 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1
As soon as I click OK for that dialog and the next one, it goes back to
192.168.0.10 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1
If I go to "Advanced" both IP addresses are shown. I click "Remove" for the 0.10 and it removes it. Click OK twice and go back and the damned thing is back 0.10 and two IPs in the Advanced list again.
If I clear all adapters and set them all to "Auto IP address" I still cannot access the DD-wrt.
Is there some way to forcefully remove all stored IP addresses for the selected-Network adapters?
I tried installing the 8.1 Intel SATA/RAID driver from the ASUS website P8Z68-V motherboard model, but when enabling AHCI in BIOS I'm getting blue screens which is making me think something isn't configured properly in the OS. How to properly enable this in 8.1 yet? I'd definitely like the extra speed out of my SSD
I've had to partially reinstal my Windows 8. This means I lost almost all my software and drivers. Now I have the headache again. On previous OS instance I had somehow disabled strict drivers signature (WHQL) control, so I was able to install even unsigned drivers like betas. Now on new OS, the annoying messages popup again and I can't for god remind where I had it disabled.
What I have:
- uninstalled defender
- disabled UAC by sliding the slider down (however UAC is still reported as active in Security Center - a guide to totally get rid of UAC would come useful )
- This hack doesnot remove the problem.
I know for sure this control can be disabled like I was able to install almost everything previously.
I am using Windows 8.1 with Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 installed. Now I having a lot of Microsoft Visual C-runtime libraries installed on my PC (view the screenshot below)-:
Now my questions are-:
Do I really need all the libraries ?? I mean what is the use of keeping both Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2008 ver 9.0.30729.17 and ver 9.0.30729.4148. Isn't that kind of redundant ?Do I need Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable at all ? Because according to this post
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package
If I have Visual C++ installed I should not need any Redistributable packages installed. If I create a system restore point before uninstalling and I restore after uninstalling will I get back my installed files just as they were ?? Because I would like to avoid catastrophes.
I have an Xbox Controller S running on XBCD drivers for my Windows 8 computer. When I used these drivers on my Windows 7 laptop, I used DSEO to enable test mode, and it worked perfectly. Using the same method sends Windows 8 into a BSOD, so that's out of the question. The other solution is to reboot from the Settings menu and manually disable it at EVERY STARTUP. So, is there any other ways to disable DSE without rebooting every time I want to use the controller?
My computer is a 5-month old ASUS M11BB, 3.7GHz AMD A4, with Windows 8 64-bit installed.
I have exhausted my efforts to get an answer out of Microsoft's forums regarding the problem with Windows 8's insistence of flashing straight into the Metro Devices page when installing hardware thus precluding the ability to install a Bluetooth keyboard (or other BT device) without a passkey, an essential element of having a functional BT keyboard in each OS of a multi-boot environment.
Where in the registry is the key that can be altered to stop Windows automatically assigning a passkey? I would imagine it's the same in Windows 7 if I only knew where that was!
To clarify. Not BitLocker. Again, because people will talk about how BitLocker is only available in Windows 8 Pro, I am talking about EFS (Encrypting File System). Different than BitLocker.
Ok, so in previous versions of Windows to encrypt a file/folder you simply needed to right-click > properties > (general tab) click advanced > check "encrypt contents to secure data" and the deed was done. I know that you cannot simultaneously encrypt and compress files/folders, so that's not the problem. I just want to know how to turn on that feature becasue EFS offered some great functionality that I would like to have back.
I am using the regular (no-pro) version of Windows 8 on a single hard drive, no storage pool strangeness going on here.
Again; no, the files/folders are not compressed and I am not talking about BitLocker.
I got this 3F0 Error and i am 100% Sure that my HDD is in good shape. I formatted yesterday, I try to enable UEFi [Disables Legacy Boot] and the 3F0 Error Pops out.
If i switch back to Legacy Boot [Disables UEFI and Secure Boot] then the PC starts normally.
just installed x64 version of windows 8 after i realized i have x64 based processor.before i had x86 version of windows 8 & i can enable net framework by using this command >>
F is my dvd drive letter but now it's not enabling because i have x64 version. i want to enable it in offline mode because my net is very slow & limited tell me how to enable it in offline mode? my DISM log >>
Am testing out a version of windows 8 in client hyper-v. I want to give it internet access so that I can active it(am actually testing the activation process). I want the virtual machine to use my dial up connection. How do I do this.
I got Windows Mail working and pretty happy as I was able to retrieve about 10 years of messages. But, pointers went bad and some messages are not available. The only way to get them is to go directly to the folder where they are saved, and open the message itself -- they're all there. So, I would do that and re-save, but I can't open .eml files. Windows 8 doesn't allow me to specify Windows Mail as a default program for any file type. I'm pretty sure I had to edit the registry to get Windows Mail to fully work with Windows 7 but can't recall what all changes need to happen, or if Windows 8 is just going to be more limited.
Using asus tf600t in portrayed mode i sometimes accidentally push the windows hardware button with a big finger. So my question is whether it is possible to disable this button considering the fact that windows can be controlled without this button.
I'm using a third party tile creator (Oblytile) to make tiles for the Start screen. It works fine, but I still get a User Account Control notification when I'm trying to launch the apps even though the app it's technically asking about is Microsoft Windows Based Script Host!
Is there anyway I can stop the notification for this program without disabling the thing all together?
I'm disabling some fonts via font manager (NexusFont) because there's way to many fonts I don't use and it's really annoying to scroll through every single font in PhotoShop and Illustrator. So which fonts should I not disabled? Like what are the fonts that Windows 8.1 and programs usually use?
I have never ran into before with any Windows Operating system, including Windows 7. I am doing some testing on my computer, and I'm trying to do a *CLEAN* install of my video drivers. I uninstall all of the relevant drivers from Programs and Features. After that, I restart my computer. Upon restart, Windows decides it wants to automatically install the default drivers that it comes with.
Fair enough. I go to Device Manager and uninstall the drivers manually, stating that I want to delete those drivers as well. Restart. Windows, again, decides it wants to install the default drivers.
Okay. I go into System Settings, Advanced Settings, and I change the Settings so that Windows no longer looks for drivers via Windows Update. Re-uninstall all drivers (again, specifying that I wish to delete the drivers) and restart. Window STILL persists in installing default drivers. At this point I'm getting desperate, so I go into gpedit.msc and disable automatic installation of devices. Restart. This resolves the issue, but the problem with altering this setting is now I cannot manually install those drivers as well. As soon as I reenable the setting, Windows immediately starts reinstalling the default video drivers.
How to prevent Windows 8 from auto installing video drivers. Is there a setting that I can change that will prevent Windows from automatically searching for what it perceives to be new hardware? If I can change that, then I may be able to manually install my drivers without overlapping old drivers.
Right so I want to disable my touch screen because my friends at collage are very good about pissing me off (as banter). And I would like to know how I can disable it with the push of a button.
Everytime I start my computer it ends up showing the icon for the onscreen keyboard in the taskbar notification area. How can I prevent this? I don't need the onscreen keyboard and doubt if I'd ever use it. Oh, by the way, I'm running W8.1 if that matters.
