Maintenance :: Disabling File History Feature - Timestamps Appended With Filenames
Jun 26, 2014I backup my data from my Windows 8 computer to an external hard drive regularly using File History but I also transfer some of this data to several other computers with various operating systems (Windows 7 & Ubuntu being the primary ones) and I noticed that, while it is simple to restore/transfer files to Windows 8 computers through the File History menu, on these other operating system one is forced to navigate to the folders on the drive and copy the files over.
This wouldn't be a problem except that all the files saved with File History have a long time stamp appended to their file names.
Is there any way to disable this feature? I don't care so much about having to copy the files manually to other operating systems as I do having to rename them all after doing so.
Enable Built In Zip Feature?
Aug 31, 2012Any way of enabling the built in zip feature but not have zip files displayed as folders in Explorer and wherever else? I use a program that needs to use the zip feature but I really hate how zips show up as folders. I know how to disable the zip feature but that results in my program not being able to utilize zip processing.

May 19, 2013I just installed Windows 8 a few days ago. It took some time to put together the partitions and programs I wanted to install on my new SSD and set up the external storage drive with my old hard drive, but it was totally worth the effort. I love the operating system and how it works with my desktop and hardware. It boots quickly, the themes are aesthetically pleasing, and access to everything is far easier to navigate.
However, I do have some issues with the Metro Menu / Applications. I have downloaded several applications, notably Twitter and Skype. Those two applications have been snapped into the left side of my screen. While they are useful and important to me, what troubles me is that I don't have a copy / cut function for either application.
Is there a way to add that feature to both applications? I would much rather avoid the clutter of a desktop Skype program or view Twitter via Google Chrome.

This PC doesn't have the Encrypting File System feature, and so will not let me access these files. Is there some way I can get around this? I know the Administrator password for the Vista PC that was used to create these files.

Oct 5, 2013I've installed StartMenuReviver which I find an excellent program. I've noticed that when I use the standard power off feature of the Metro interface that power is still present on (my) USB ports as witnessed by USB speakers still on and USB mouse still glowing (multi-coloured lighting inbuilt)
IF I use the power off feature of the StartmenuReviver app then I truly power off; speaker on light goes off as does the lighting feature of the mouse.
Obviously a complete shutdown is preferable so I turn off using the StartMenuReviver app. Is their a reason the Metro app doesn't fully shut down PC ??
Windows 8 Snap Feature Portrait Mode?

Nov 20, 2012I have been playing around with the Secure Boot feature to see if I could tell what properties it might show. Currently, to enable the full Secure Boot feature, I have to use the on board graphics, since my Graphics card does not have a UEFI Op Rom.
So far, I know Windows 7 will not boot on my machine when the Windows 8 Secure Boot bios settings are enabled, which means disabling the CSM (Compatibility Support Module). When the Windows 8 Secure Boot is on and I try to Boot Windows 7, I am returned to the Bios with a notification that some settings have been reset for compatibility. Windows 7 boots fine after that.
Because many systems will have devices that will not meet the Windows 8 standards, like Graphic Cards, the secure boot may really only be fully available on new systems.
But the CSM seems to be a way to bridge the gap by ignoring certain non-UEFI Op Rom devices during boot. Msinfo32.exe shows Secure Boot ON with the module enabled and certain options being set. I am thinking that would stop Root Kits, but have not found anything to confirm that it would.
I suppose I need to go find a really bad Root Kit somewhere to test !!

Jan 17, 2013I have never ran into before with any Windows Operating system, including Windows 7. I am doing some testing on my computer, and I'm trying to do a *CLEAN* install of my video drivers. I uninstall all of the relevant drivers from Programs and Features. After that, I restart my computer. Upon restart, Windows decides it wants to automatically install the default drivers that it comes with.
Fair enough. I go to Device Manager and uninstall the drivers manually, stating that I want to delete those drivers as well. Restart. Windows, again, decides it wants to install the default drivers.
Okay. I go into System Settings, Advanced Settings, and I change the Settings so that Windows no longer looks for drivers via Windows Update. Re-uninstall all drivers (again, specifying that I wish to delete the drivers) and restart. Window STILL persists in installing default drivers. At this point I'm getting desperate, so I go into gpedit.msc and disable automatic installation of devices. Restart. This resolves the issue, but the problem with altering this setting is now I cannot manually install those drivers as well. As soon as I reenable the setting, Windows immediately starts reinstalling the default video drivers.
How to prevent Windows 8 from auto installing video drivers. Is there a setting that I can change that will prevent Windows from automatically searching for what it perceives to be new hardware? If I can change that, then I may be able to manually install my drivers without overlapping old drivers.

Jul 9, 2014Since about 4 days, I'm having various problems primarily on the internet.
1) All sorts of downloads from the internet first load normally, then stop at 99% and usually dont finish, some end 5 minutes later, resulting in a damaged file. Example: Downloading a song this way makes it randomly jump parts of the song in short intervals (a song of 3:50 minutes would then be in my itunes with a duration of 3:46 due to the random jumps); downloading CCleaner and similar programs did not work at all (not even a damage file).
2) Pictures on the internet become "puzzled" and colors change randomly. Example:
3) Only tested this on youtube - videos load 10x slower than before the issue + some flash plugin keeps crashing (also never happened before - even with 50+ tabs).
4) Frequently sites do not load (they stay white).
5) A "firefox update recommendation" and a "flash player update site" with untrustworthy URLs often randomly open, sometimes even 5 times in 5 seconds + I suddenly get overloaded with random advertisement from the left, bottom and right screen sides.
THE PROBLEM WAS A PLUGIN CALLED "NET-CRAWLER" >uninstalled it, and everything worked out.
