View 1 RepliesThe first time I tried to download a word document from an email, a message came up asking how I wanted to download documents and I accidentally chose to open it in Internet Explorer. Now every time I try to download a word document from emails of any source (college site, work site, personal email) I get a message that Internet Explorer is not responding and the email never downloads.
I don't want to download the the files into Internet Explorer (even if that did work). I often need to edit these documents or work as a collaborative group on online assignments. Now I cannot even access them
I'm so fed up with Adobe Acrobat -- why do I need to install 2GB of software to do simple .doc to .pdf conversions. So I'm curious, is there a free, or relatively inexpensive solution to do the following?
1. Convert Word documents into PDF.
2. Convert web pages into PDF from a web browser.
Is there a quick way to switch between a web page I am looking at and an open excel or word document or do I have to go via the start page every time ?
View 6 Replies View RelatedHow to disable the auto complete feature in the windows 8.1 "start screen"(or whatever its called now) search bar preferable the inline auto complete as it is messing up my search results and it does not seem to be tied to the settings in the control panel that i can find. it seems to be creating a history and trying to intelligently fill results which is causing more of a problem then it is solving as many things have similar names.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs It possible to pin actual saved files to the Start Menu like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets (or anything else for that matter) as well as programs. I use this on my Windows 8 at work.
For example my Microsoft Excel file shortcut will be like follows:
Target: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" "D:UsersUser NameYour File Name.xlsx"
Start in: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15"
I usually set the Start In to the MS Office Folder or the File location folder, it doesn't seem to affect it either way. I created a folder in my username called Shortcuts and put all of them in there. Because Windows sees this as an executable program it will allow you to right click it and to pin it to the Start Menu even though it actually starts the saved file you need. I use this for my Access database files too. As long as you set the correct path to the file name, it works every time. You can name the shortcut whatever name you need as well.
Anyway, I thought I'd share it since it makes a great time saver being able to launch your most frequently used files straight from the Start Menu in Windows 8 rather than having to launch the program and then trying to open the saved file.
How to disable the categories feature in Windows 8.1 Mail? After the 8.1 update, the mail app now seems to separate all my incoming mail into new categories such as "social networks" and "newsletters" and its extremely annoying. I just want a simple inbox with everything.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 8 a few days ago. It took some time to put together the partitions and programs I wanted to install on my new SSD and set up the external storage drive with my old hard drive, but it was totally worth the effort. I love the operating system and how it works with my desktop and hardware. It boots quickly, the themes are aesthetically pleasing, and access to everything is far easier to navigate.
However, I do have some issues with the Metro Menu / Applications. I have downloaded several applications, notably Twitter and Skype. Those two applications have been snapped into the left side of my screen. While they are useful and important to me, what troubles me is that I don't have a copy / cut function for either application.
Is there a way to add that feature to both applications? I would much rather avoid the clutter of a desktop Skype program or view Twitter via Google Chrome.
I'm running windows 8 x64 and when I open 'Programs and Features' to uninstall a program, the 'Uninstall' button that is usually next to the 'Organize' button is missing. Also when I try to right click on most programs and left click the 'Uninstall' option, I get the message "An error occurred while trying to uninstall X. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove X from the Programs and Features list?" However, those programs have not been uninstalled.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a need for inspecting a huge batch of files created by Word 97. They mostly consist of a complex mixture of figures that (I've been told) on the original Word 97 were all ordered into columns (but no *tables* format was used). On my Windows 8.1, I have Kingsoft Writer installed and this shows me just a jumble of words and figures whose meaning I can't easily guess. It can't obviously read the exact format of Word 97.
I know I can find a Word 97 Viewer somewhere on the Microsoft site - but nowhere I'm seeing anything mentioned as compatible with Windows 8 and I'm reluctant to install something that might compromise my great new computer. Would it be o.k. to install on Windows 8 a Word Viewer created for previous operating systems?
I wish to run word in Windows RT 8.1 off of the desktop like an app rather than a normal program. I would like to run it like mail, weather or IE which does not use the desktop

I have installed office 2007 which I purchased with my last laptop and my office 2013 is currently still on its trial period and about a week left (which im not going to purchase it)
I made a word document within word2007 and saved it to my desktop,when I then click on the shortcut icon on my desktop it then opens my document in word2013
so I right clicked on it and changed it to open with word2007, but when I get the message "this app can't run on your pc" and it doesn't open
how can I get this so that it will just open with word2007?
I have a subscription to Office 365 Small Business Premium. The install on my Windows 7 64 Bit machine went fine a has been working great for about 3 weeks now. I was at the office yesterday and for some reason Word 2013 fails on startup. It starts up, I select the blank page option and then it fails. It calls home (to Microsoft?) and tells me they will let me know when they have a solution. This is a small business how long am I supposed to wait for their solution? I need a solution now for Word 2013 now.
Everything else still works, Outlook 2013, Excel 2103. etc. I am thinking of removing this machine from the subscription and uninstalling Office 2013 and then downloading and installing it again.
Any easier way to get this Word 2013 functioning again
Word had worked well in Windows 7, but now, after I moved to Windows 8.1 almost everything is messed up. Most annoying thing is the copy-paste function. When I try to copy something, it can't be copied to the clipboard and some weird cursor appears when I click where to paste. When I try to cut, the string is saved in clipboard and it works fine.
Also, when I run Word in safe mode, all the functions work fine (even copy-paste).
What should I do? I tried Office Diagnostics, but it shows 0 errors.
A few weeks ago I had some issues with not being able to save files.
Some days later when I tried to open a word document I got a message saying something along the lines of "are you sure you want to open this file? It has become corrupted and caused loads of problems with your computer the last time you had it open". So I guess that was the original issue. At the time I didn't desperately need the file and I had a lot of work so I haven't had time to try to solve the issue until now. What might have caused the file to get corrupted? (I'm not even sure my PC used this term). And is there any way I can retrieve the information in it.
I am trying to run CoreInfo.exe to see if my processor supports Hyper-V before paying msoft for Windows 8-pro, but Windows 8.0 slams the CMD window shut instantly.
I tried all suggestions but still it flashes open then closed.
Failed: Elevated command prompt
Failed: CMD [enter] coreinfo.exe -v
Failed: Set Run as Administrator
Failed: Set Compatibility to 7, XP, Vista
Failed: CMD /K CoreInfo
Failed: CMD /K Core info > core.txt = Redirect output to a text file
It seems like Coreinfo is appending an "Exit" to the command line command string. About right for the inept msoft programmers.
How to stop this long enough to read the output?
If I move a file from my documents to skydrive it gets uploaded on microsofts server, but if I change the file in my documents folder is it possible to make skydrive upload the updated file online automatically without that I have to move the file to the skydrive folder myself?
I know it is possible to change skydrives location to my documents folder but I don't wanna upload all my documents.
My data source appeared in Documents today and I cannot find out if I should keep it or not. If not, there is not much to discuss removing it.

I can open the spreadsheet on my Windows phone and I can open it if I use a browser to access SkyDrive, but if I use the SkyDrive app tile I get an error that Windows doesn't know how to open Excel files. there is a SkyDrive desktop app and SkyDrive Webapps and a SkyDrive Metro app.So, you can't open Office documents using the SkyDrive app?

View 2 Replies View RelatedBackground: I have been using windows since 3.11 when I was in second grade and we got rid of our DOS box. I consider myself a proficient user to highly proficient user, having built 4 of my own machines. I have installed Office 2010 Professional and the program works.
Setup: Lenovo ideapad y500 purchased January 2013 with Windows 8
Problem: Windows will not allow me to set Word 2010 as my default program for opening .docx or other valid formats. I can open the documents from within the program, just not by default.
Steps Taken:
1) Right-click file > choose default program > Word 2010 not available > browse for and specify location > set program to default. Result = System Message "This app can't run on your pc."
2) Consulted Microsoft support site to search for solution. Same result.
Desired Resolution: how to set that default application. All of you who read this are also annoyed with Microsoft's awful customer service.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to adjust Word 2003 to my liking. In Win 7 I have it set to occupy half the screen. In Win 8 I can set the screen size but on restart it reverts to a quarter screen. I have tried everything I can think of but it keeps going back to quarter screen again.
