Nov 27, 2013When I opened up my start screen this morning a lot of different apps appeared, most of them were performance and diagnostics apps. I used one to see if there were any problems with the memory on my computer, after it had completed and told me that their were no problems, all of the apps disappeared. Where the apps came from and why they all disappeared.

I made a word document within word2007 and saved it to my desktop,when I then click on the shortcut icon on my desktop it then opens my document in word2013
so I right clicked on it and changed it to open with word2007, but when I get the message "this app can't run on your pc" and it doesn't open
how can I get this so that it will just open with word2007?

Feb 16, 2014If I move a file from my documents to skydrive it gets uploaded on microsofts server, but if I change the file in my documents folder is it possible to make skydrive upload the updated file online automatically without that I have to move the file to the skydrive folder myself?
I know it is possible to change skydrives location to my documents folder but I don't wanna upload all my documents.

I can open the spreadsheet on my Windows phone and I can open it if I use a browser to access SkyDrive, but if I use the SkyDrive app tile I get an error that Windows doesn't know how to open Excel files. there is a SkyDrive desktop app and SkyDrive Webapps and a SkyDrive Metro app.So, you can't open Office documents using the SkyDrive app?

Smart Copy Not Copying From Source To Destination

ODBC Driver Manager Error - Database Source Name Not Found
Jun 25, 2014I have been trying to install a product called Thumbsplus which was giving me a ODBC Driver Manager Error - Database source name not found and no default driver specified error.
After trying a fews things I starting looking at the ODBC Data Source Manager in windows 8 and noticed that I could not access the System DNS tab. ( I would get a warning " you are logged on with a non-administrator privileges. ) even thought the account Is an administrator account. So I logged off and entered in as administrator and still the same message.
Something is wrong and I suspect it has little to do with the thumbsplus program as I should be able to enter into the system dns tab without receiving this error message.
PS: If I say OK after the dialog message the manager with open up and allow me to click the add button but since I dont know how to add the apropriate info there I did not go further, hence to say the error message probably did cause thumbsplus to not install correctly.

Computer Not Staying In Sleep Mode - Wake Source Unknown
Jan 22, 2013My computer cannot sleep!
I did a fresh install (upgrade) and the moment I got the desktop up and idle, I tried to put the computer to sleep. It did, then 5 seconds later, on it came again.
Event viewer says "wake source unknown".
I have updated all drivers from asus, and installed all windows updates. No difference.
I have used every tool POWERCFG gives, it's report is clean, there are no wake requests, all devices (mouse keyboard) have had their wake ability disabled, I have even disable ALL devices in bios, booted without a keyboard and mouse and still, it wakes as soon as it's put to sleep. Even with all on board devices disabled except for sata.
Wake source: unknown.
I boot into Win 7 from another hard drive, no issues.
One thing to note is that from a fresh restart, if i put it to sleep, it stays asleep. Once waked, it will never sleep again. Restart the system, leave for idle for ages, hit the power button; it goes to sleep and stays. After waking, it never stays asleep again.
I have tried safe mode. no difference.
I have disabled all services. I have changed all the power settings to disable wake timers and to allow sleep during sharing. Still no difference.
What's up with my Asus Z8P68-V Pro that disagrees with windows 8? All my other machines have no issue.
I have no choice but to keep using Win7 at the moment, I can't have a computer that doesn't sleep.

Source Path Too Long - Attempting To Back Up All Steam Games Into One File?
Jul 21, 2014This happened when I attempted to back up all my Steam Games into one file. It crashed and now I'm stuck iwth a Folder within a Folder which as a really long name (basically about 50 names) I cannot delete the file. It's advising me to rename it which I've tired but fail miserably. I attempted to use CMD like this:
C:UsersName>DEL "?ESteam Backup Games"
?ESteam Backup Games*, Are you sure (Y/N) Y
Nothing happens.. the folder is still there.
I'm pretty much stuck and I cannot remove this folder.
I also created another similar to this but the Folders are empty and the name of both the folders is called "Steam BackUp Games 2" yet i can't shift+del it...

Does Microsoft backup data like icloud for Metro apps? I have a windows 8 pro tablet, but would like to use more Metro apps, but only if backup and restore is as easy as ios icloud or Android titanium backup.

Jun 17, 2013When I first got my new laptop I made and image using Asus backup restore but all it did was make a copy of the restore partition on the hard drive. Is there a way to make an image of what the computer is with all the data and programs there are installed? I had to do a restore and then I had to reinstall everything and reload all my data files. This took a long time to do. It would be so much easier to just have an image of everything just the way it is now.

Jan 20, 2014i recently lost a computer(mother board failure)but the hard drive is in tact and i can access with a SATA to usb device. have another computer up and running win 8. i am wondering how i find and transfer user specific data for instance i have a typing tutor program my wife and i both use we have different user names and have progressed differently. once i reload applications what do i need to move from the old hard drive to restore those applications to the earlier state with all user data, id, preferences, application progress etc.is this data located in each applications folder or stored in separate locations throughout win 8

I recently placed an external hard drive with all my back up files on my computer, but this drive is not going to be my main drive. I have two others I will be using as a main hdd and a backup drive that are brand new.
So, the question is, if I were to use a utility like the Windows 8.1 disk management feature to either delete the drive letter or even change it to another one, will that mess up the external hard drive or even lose data? Because until I transfer my files to my backup disk I am afraid of losing my only copy of my files.

May 11, 2013My friend recently bought a Windows 8 (Pro) Tablet and I suggested that she should use skydrive,but there are two unexpected behaviours:
1)On the Mordern UI I try to access files saved in the skydrive, but this only works with an internet connection.Without I only got an error/warning message that I need a connection.Why there are no data sored offline? This is a no go!How can I change this?
2)On the Desktop I don't found the folder where to store the skydrive data.I think this is a problem in connection with no (1).
Windows Boot Manager Appeared When Start Windows 8?
Jan 18, 2014suddenly appeared when I start Windows 8. It shows Win 8 and Windows recovery console as the two option.
I checked msconfig and easybcd for the second option to remove but only Windows 8 shows. I tried erasing the mbr with mbrwizard, repartitioning and formatting the hard drive, fixmbr and fixboot. When trying to refresh Win 8 it says C drive is locked. I scanned for rootkits with several products and they found nothing. how o get it to boot straight to desktop?

Aug 5, 2013I have been using Syncback SE Free for a long time now with Win7. It works well. I like the mirror function and the ability for syncback to detect small changes and allows you to view different files. When I use the mirror function in syncback, it scans the drive/folder and only copy/delete the differences leaving the rest of the files intact.
I have one main PC as my work pc, and I rotate between 2 different PC's (win 7 pro laptop and win 8 pro desktop). So I like all files on each pc to be current. Think of it as dropbox but offline with tons of data. Currently I have an external hd which I use as an intermediary between the "current" pc and the "older" pc.
After I upgraded to win 8 pro, I noticed that I can do a complete backup with syncback, but I cannot use the mirror function. Syncback does not work in deleting files either from source or target hard disk. It can detect the file changes, but unless I delete the file at the target drive, it will not copy to the target drive.
Any mirroring software which can replace syncback free which works for windows 8 pro desktop and my windows 7 pro laptop? I have tried contacting the people behind syncback (2brightsparks), and they have a knowledge based which does not tell much. It seems that windows is getting stingy with the read/write options. Following the KB discussion on syncback yields nothing in fact it is too convoluted.
I don't mind if it is a network/ethernet solution (not online storage like dropbox-but using ethernet wires) or my solution which is using an external hd as long as all my work computers are "current".

Jul 27, 2014I've had this error for some time wherein I would try to open my documents folder and I get this message every time: 'C:UsersMeDocuments is not accessible. The file name, directory name, and volume label syntax is incorrect.' I also noticed that nothing was inside the folder at all, as I've checked its properties.
However, it seems that all those original files in the documents folder along with the folder itself seemed to have been moved to a different directory, as I managed to open it from my desktop in the windows explorer. It only appears from there too, as I've checked my libraries and no documents folder existing as well.
The only time It did open was when I tried creating a shortcut of that inaccessible folder onto my desktop and opening it from there. It's bothering me because I can't seem to install anything properly without a message telling me that it can't access my documents files or that it can't find the directory, etc.
Downloading Word Documents From Emails?
Apr 8, 2013The first time I tried to download a word document from an email, a message came up asking how I wanted to download documents and I accidentally chose to open it in Internet Explorer. Now every time I try to download a word document from emails of any source (college site, work site, personal email) I get a message that Internet Explorer is not responding and the email never downloads.
I don't want to download the the files into Internet Explorer (even if that did work). I often need to edit these documents or work as a collaborative group on online assignments. Now I cannot even access them
Documents Can't Make Shortcut To Pin To Start?
Aug 17, 2014I just did the 'refresh without losing files or settings' after having Windows 8.1 for like 6 months to refresh. Well I lost pretty much every setting and basically started from scratch minus backing up my files to an external/cloud like a regular full reformat. This feature save maybe 5 minutes. and my monitor settings are all messed up, tiny text or scroll bar on the bottom of IE because pages wont fit if I make the text larger, the resolution was fine before I reformatted. What a POS OS. I can go on and on and on. MS should be sued for emotional distress for this faulty POS OS.
So my recents docs is gone we all know, but there are sort of workarounds. I want my recent docs, not recent 'Items' that I was able to pin to start but requires more navigating to get to recent word files etc.
I did this Just open the run dialog box by pressing Win + R and type in "recent". There you can see your recent activities.
Note: "Recent places" can be access under Windows Explorer's under "Favorite".
Also you can create a shortcut of the "recent" at your desktop and then pin it to start menu. For this just right click on desktop and seclect New>Shortcut. In file location type the path
well when I enter the copied path to the new shortcut, it says invalid. The path is:
C:Users
ameRecent"C:Users
ame
ecentRecent"
Edit, after just noticing the link above actually doubled the path, I just deleted the duplicate second half and got the shortcut to create and made it work.
great program that it duplicated the path when I copied it once.
Can't Move Files From Desktop Into My Documents?
Aug 10, 2013I have some files and shortcuts on my desktop, and I am trying to move them into my documents. When I refresh my documents they just disappear and they do not reappear in documents or the desktop. Only when I restart or log out do they reappear on the desktop. Whats causing this?
