Nov 18, 2013I've had this Dell XPS for the last 3 years I guess and over the past 4 or 5 months, my computer has been randomly restarting, freezing and now today crashing. Sometimes I'll be on it and it will restart, sometimes I won't even be near it when it restarts. Last week I was on it and my screen went half blue, but I could still see part of my browser but it was frozen. So I just had to cut power. Here is a picture of said incident. [URL] ....
I've also had it freeze and then I come in the room and my tower sounds like a jet engine and I have to turn it off. Then yesterday the blue (as seen above) cascaded down my screen, froze and gave me the BSOD. I've had 3 crashes in less then 24 hours and I'm at a loss as to what to do. I think I have every driver updated, but maybe I'm missing something.
Random Restarts When Browsing Web / Playing Games?
Aug 8, 2014I have a problem with my machine I've been battling for months now. It will just randomly restart and I could be doing anything. It has happened when browsing the web, playing games, and even when the motherboard logo shows up during startup.
It never seems to crash when running Prime95 or OCCT stress tests. What I've done:
Hardware
-Re-installed windows twice
-Purchased new motherboard
-Purchased new CPU cooler (from air into liquid)
-Purchased new GPU (HD7950 to GTX780)
-Purchased SSD
-Monitoring software showed PSU 12v rail running at 10.8v when stressed. Checked 4 pin molex connector with voltmeter and it measured 12.2v and it dropped to 12.1v under stress.
-Changed the case, thought it was a short circuit somewhere.
Software
-Run multiple stress tests which did not cause a crash.
-Ran Prime95 and Battlefield 4 at the same time. No crash
-Updated GPU drivers
-Updated motherboard drivers
-Can't update BIOS, scared computer will restart during the flash. My motherboard revision is 1.01 and
-I've run memtest for 5 hours, but I should do it again
Sometimes, instead of a restart, my display will turn off and any sound playing will begin to loop. PC will be unresponsive. CPU temps reach only about 35 degrees under full load.
Windows 8.1 - Explorer Crashes Then Restarts
Feb 6, 2014I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.
When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.
Hardware Drivers :: PC Restarts At Random Points After Getting GTX 780ti
Feb 1, 2014I just got a Gtx 780ti, and after plugging it in, I've updated my board's drivers (msi x79a-gd45 8D), gpu drivers (non-beta, then 334.67 beta). Pc crashed before and after all of these updates. Screen goes black and pc stays on, sometime it boots back up and sometimes doesn't. No crashes have happened during gameplay yet, performance is great but pc crashes when I exit game/benchmark. I got a i7 3820 quad core, 1 gtx 780ti, msi x79a-gd45 8D, a GS800 corsair gaming power supply, intel all in one cpu liquid cooler and a western digital 2tb 6gb/s hdd. This thing uses a 8pin and 6pin power cables so maybe 800 watts isn't enough?

Mar 2, 2014Just the other day i was having problems with the Temporary profile problem, but by the end of the day i finally fixed it. But i also deleted my user account so i found this program that will restore deleted data, it was in trial mode so i only allowed me to download 1 Gb so i got what I thought was the most important like App data, contacts, desktop, documents, KAG, and all of the little files at the end of the screen.
I put all of the things in my account once the problem was fixed. Then every time i open my windows explorer and i try to open anything it says that windows explorer has crashed and then it restarts.

May 9, 2014I am currently working on a desktop and ended up formatting the HDD it was in RAID, but removed the other and switched connection to SATA...
Wiped everything off of it and loaded Windows onto it,
On EVERY boot I get the same error message
"Fatal Error - failed to locate memory table(s) to make adjustments, press any key to continue"
I press any key and it continues to boot into the windows..
I have done some research on other forums, and end up finding the same issue "reload windows there are some file issues" but that's not my issue, because i CHANGED the RAM 2 times with different ram AND installed windows 4 different times.
Debugging :: Windows 8 Doesn't Shut Down Instead It Restarts
Oct 29, 2013Whenever I click the "shut down" button, the PC powers off for a moment and then just starts up again... I've tried disabling fast boot option in the power settings but that does nothing. Also every time my PC starts it says "Your PC ran into a problem" and some other info about on how it is a "system failure" and how I can send it to Microsoft. It also creates a MEMORY.DMP file in my System32 folder. This is really bugging me and it's happening since I reinstalled my Windows after getting a new motherboard, cpu and ram. Should I try reinstalling my Windows 8 again or is there a simpler solution to this? Also I have the latest version of BIOS and my system specs are:
Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 rev 3.0
AMD FX-8320 Black Edition Turbo mode @ 3.7ghz
2x4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 @ 1600mhz (it goes a little bit over that since of the turbo mode of my cpu)

Aug 20, 2014I've an odd issue. Every time I boot up my computer for the first time in the evening after work, it will freeze and crash several times but then remain fine for the rest of the night after multiple restarts. The cycle then repeats itself the next day.

Mar 27, 2014Just got in the mail 2 ssd's and the HD7870 video card along with a copy of windows 8.1 complete (retail). My boot ssd (one I'm trying to install on) is a 60gb Mushkin and the other is the one I was going to put games on the 240gb Mushkin.
So I hooked the 60gb one up and put in my install disk for the 64bit of windows 8.1. It went through the install fine, then it said it needed to restart to complete and when it restarted it gave me the black screen of death. It sat there for over 30 minutes then the screen turned to a yellowish orange.
So I formatted the ssd, reinstalled fresh again. Same thing.
I then tried the 240gb thinking maybe I had a bad ssd. Same thing.
Then I tried an old 500gb Seagate that I knew worked but I formatted it and installed. Same thing.
So back to the 60gb I went, formatted, reinstalled 8.1 then it did the black screen again. So I tried booting over a couple times till it gave me the option to start in safe mode with networking. It started in a black screen with the blue windows logo... and stayed there for an hour.
I then tried the command prompt methods of BOOTREC/FIXMBR, BOOTREC/FIXBOOT, BOOTREC/REBUILDBCD and restarted with same black screen. *after the rebuildbcd, it said copies of windows = 0???*
So I tried to start using the install CD as a recovery drive, it brought up the option to install windows....
I'm not sure how I can get dumps or test stuff if there is no way for me to even get to the actual explorer other than the black screen or the black screen with the blue window logo, or even he more rare black screen with underscore blinking...
Debugging :: BSOD - Computer Freezes And Restarts Randomly
Jul 30, 2014A couple of weeks ago my old PSU blew up. It did kind of like a explosion sound and some flashing, very impressive. I inspected the motherboard and I could not find any damage whatsoever. Only the PSU seemed affected.
After that I bought a new PSU (Tacens MP700 - 700W), an aftermarket CPU fan (Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO) and some extra chasis fan to improve air flow and lower the temperature. I plugged everything in, and system started with no apparent issues.
However since a few days ago sometimes my PC restarts without saying anything, some other time it just freezes (very annoying) and some other times it gives me a BSOD with the errors CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. The frequency of these failures:
- Normal use like browsing, email, programming --> not very often
- Playing game like iRacing --> sometimes it freezes
- Playing game like PES2014 --> it always freezes, sometimes during the first match, sometimes after a 2-3 of them
After googling it appears is a hardware problem so I wonder if the damn PSU damaged some of my other components. The thing is the original PSU was intended to be for a quiet HTPC but I started to work from home and suddenly became a work station. I should have improved the PSU among with the other components (CPU, memory, etc.) but I did not think it was necessary. Bad decission I guess.
I've monitored temperature and it does not seem to be the issue as using a benchmark software at 100% CPU during 30 minutes temperature does not go over 65C on the CPU (I live in Spain where ambient temperature is around 30) and motherboard never pass 68-70. Right now while browsing temp is 35 for the CPU, 45 for the mobo and graphic, 30 for HDD. Pretty normal I think.
I have also upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 hoping it was a driver issue but not success either.

Nov 13, 2013I've been facing constant problems with BSOD (Ntoskrnl.exe) today. It happened for the first time about a month ago when I tried to update Opera (12.16 -> 17.0) but after many, many restarts, trying to run Windows in a "Safe Mode", restoring recovery points finally Windows started to work. I haven't tried to update Opera since then.
Today... I don't know what happened because I went away of a computer ( it's possible ) for a few minutes and when I came back I saw BSOD with 'DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' error. I tried to find a solution on the Internet but I still don't know what else to do.
When I run system in a Safe Mode with a 5th option (Safe mode with networking) everything works but when I try to run Windows normally - same situation as previously (reboot)...
I added dump file as an attachment (111313-10140-01.txt).
Please change the extension (txt -> dmp). I wasn't able to upload .dmp file to this forum. The second file (debuglog.txt) was created in a following way:

I found above-mentioned steps on Reading a memory.dmp or other .dmp file - Scott Forsyth's Blog The last but not least... About a month ago (when I had the same problems) I run Memtest for a whole night and it found no problems. I haven't tested other hardware yet.

One is 1tb ( western digital )
The other is 320gb
They were plugged into my old laptop which had xp sp3 , but i got a new base system with windows 8.
The day after I got it , it wasn't showing the 320 GB drive , but i shutdown , switched it off at the wall and it came back into view on next startup.
I had a partition. I cant remember what drive it was on , but its disappeared. I had a lot of ebooks , manuals and photos stored on it , but when i open "computer" , its just not there , even after shutting down , turning off at the wall and rebooting.
Still very new to windows 8 , so im hoping its something as simple as "view" settings , which I have checked , but maybe missed something ?

Security :: Can't Locate Windows Defender To Activate
Apr 12, 2014how to retrace my steps to manually reactivate. I have gone to Windows 8 forum (Windows Defender - Turn On or Off in Windows 8) & followed the steps...but Windows Defender is not appearing in my action center...when I go here it shows my antivirus & everything on. There's no option to expand the "security" settings to locate windows defender.
Everything else I do turns up a notification that the app is "off"; but it doesn't give me an option for turning it on. Once again I'm lost in the dust of Windows 8 & it's embedded features...where I locate windows defender to turn it back on...otherwise I'll go the simpler route & just leave things "as is" & download iobit malware fighter or something. However, I've found that I have sporadic issues with Iobit Malware fighter where it works for awhile & then for some reason after a time it won't launch.
I find I'm rather routinely having to uninstall & re-install it. Is it a compatibility glitch with Windows 8.1? Cause Iobit website insists that their malware fighter coincides with all versions of Windows 8. Or should I even be concerned about the malware fighter...I have super antispyware...but it's not a program that is automatically active. My windows security center seems to be compensating with AVG antivirus in place of a malware program. I wasn't aware there was any anti-malware or spyware embedded in AVG?

Oct 11, 2013Recently I've experienced random BSOD's in Windows 8. Although my computer know-how is limited at best, I knew it was best to upgraded my pc in steps. The first week I installed a SSD (with a fresh install of Windows 8 on it) and ran without any problems. A week later I installed 16 gigs of (new) ram (with the SSD) and everything ran fine.
The problems started two weeks later. I haven't made any changes to my pc or driver upgrades since then. If I idle in windows everything works fine. The same is true when running Office or browsing the internet. BSOD's occur when:
- Playing games (modern or old), either after 5 minutes or after 3 hours (seems very random but frequent);
- When wathing a HD youtube movie (BSOD's when doing this seem very rare though);

Nov 1, 2013I did a fresh install hoping that it would get rid of my BSODs which were numerous. So far, I only have 5 BSODs that I have had the patience to allow Windows to get to 100% on. I easily BSOD once a day, most are with MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
I have run memtest86+ ad nauseum with no errors, as well as Prime 95 for over 24 hours, I am stable and these are not temperature errors (30c idle, 71c at load).

It is a fairly new install at no more than a month old. I have not added any new internal hardware or anything like that, so what could be the cause for this random error? I am facing a strange issues of BSOD since last 10 days. 1st I was on Windows 7 SP1 since more than 3 months and earlier on Windows 8. Suddenly my Windows 7 got corrupted after automatic indexing process by windows, in which process showed some index files corrupted and deleted. After then windows cant start, stuck into bootloop.
I formatted Windows several times but after a few hours the same condition. Then I decided to backup my HDD and Zero Level format of HDD. I did that, which took almost 6 Hrs. After then I decided to go again on Widows 8. hence, formatted and installed Windows 8.1 Update 1.
Now, again after a few minutes or hours BSOD happen again and again with random Two errors :
1. irql_not_less_or_equal (storports.sys) or
2. kernel-data-inpage-error

Jun 6, 2014I've tried lots of different driver updates across everything to solve these BSOD errors and at many times had thought I'd solved them only to crash later. They *mostly* occur during gaming, but a couple times have just been while browsing the web.

Sep 15, 2014I needed Windows again and decided to try it once again and immediatly got random BSOD again, right after a fresh installation and even after getting all updates and all the newest device drivers. Being within warranty I handed the notebook in to an authorized service partner. Disappointed I switched back to Linux and never had the time to investigate the problems any further. I also installed Windows 8 and the problems persisted.
Now I decided to investigate any further and decided to install Windows 8.1. From the beginning and also after upgrading to the newest available device drivers I'm experiencing the following BSOD.

I did some memory tests, several with different versions of MEMTEST86+ and one over 48 hours with Windows Memory Diagnostic. I also ran Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool and got no errors.Assuming failing device drivers I enabled Driver Verifier as described in the forum (only mentioned tests and non-MS-drivers) and oddly I experienced only 1 BSOD during about 48 hours of operation with activated driver verifier (but unfortunately nothing driver specific). Normally I get at least 2 BSOD a day.

Debugging :: Windows 8 - Random Variations Of BSOD While Booting
Aug 25, 2014I've recently build my own computer with Windows 8, which turned out great at first. But after a day or two i've been experiencing seemingly random BSOD messages, and what triggers them. I've tried reinstalling Windows 8 and updating all drivers and installing all Windows updates, but after a short while the BSODs appear again.
I mainly get the BSOD when booting and they continue until i've tried a number of random troubleshooting options. Most of these options fail (including activating restore points) and the computer reboots with a new BSOD, and the next time into troubleshooting. The last couple of times it seems like Windows 8 will boot if i choose activate troubleshooting as a startup alternative.
At small periods of times i've also had troubles with computer going into a loop where it is turning on for a couple of seconds, then turning off, i did not get boot screen during this. I'm thinking this might be caused by some loose wiring which have been tightened, since i'm not having this trouble right now, but i thought i mention it anyway.
I've attached the BSOD data as instructed, with both tools. This includes only the files after my last install of Windows 8. My first install also experienced the 0x0000003b bug check code, but i don't have any more data than that.

Aug 21, 2014I have been getting many different BSOD crashes. I went ahead and reinstalled Windows 8 to see if it would alleviate the issue with no avail. I installed the fresh drivers from the manufactures page. I have been getting these crashes much more frequently.
