My biggest complaint about Windows has always been backing up application data.
Does Microsoft backup data like icloud for Metro apps? I have a windows 8 pro tablet, but would like to use more Metro apps, but only if backup and restore is as easy as ios icloud or Android titanium backup.
When I first got my new laptop I made and image using Asus backup restore but all it did was make a copy of the restore partition on the hard drive. Is there a way to make an image of what the computer is with all the data and programs there are installed? I had to do a restore and then I had to reinstall everything and reload all my data files. This took a long time to do. It would be so much easier to just have an image of everything just the way it is now.
I have Windows 8 with Outlook 2007 as e-mail. In the old XP days when ever I received e-mail with that annoying vertical line down the side of the page it was simple enough to get rid of them by using the instructions below. Now of course in this modern world things are different with tool bars turning into ribbons. When I open the e-mail there is no View.
Is it possible convert the XP instructions below into Windows 8 ...
Lets see if this works: Open the email and click Forward: Now, click View on the Menu Bar: Now look for SOURCE at the bottom tab and click: Now look through the SOURCE CODE and find a selection that starts with something called <BLOCKQUOTE>Now, if there is one line in the email you should see it once. For each blue line you will see it listed. Highlight each line in the screenshot below and delete:
I have a POP3 email address (Tiscali) I have set it up on "outlook". I can send and receive Emails ok but cannot find an option to get a tone to sound when a new Email arrives.
I have looked at the Laptop's "Sounds" and found that the 2 items referring to Email Notifications are both set to use the Default sound. My volume is turned fully up. Sounds from Iplayer are ok.
I have Goggled for a solution but the methods suggested cannot work because the options are not viable.
When I try to print a received email I can only print out the first part of it.......any document and pictures I download print okay. I think it might be the settings on my windows 8.
recently I tried doing a system restore on windows 8 and after going through the process of waiting, I received a message upon reboot namely this "System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.
System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"
anyway I panicked and went to undo the last change made(if one was in fact made) via system restore , but the same thing happened I repeated this procedure a few times trying to restore to the same point and then undoing the operation (I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) to which it just kept giving the same error message after going through a short process and rebooting each time.
I was wondering could any of this possibly of corrupted my files, deleted files, or wrecked anything in any way, my computer my programs, anything. As far as I can remember the restore process said something about restoring registry each time, which only took a short time.
i recently lost a computer(mother board failure)but the hard drive is in tact and i can access with a SATA to usb device. have another computer up and running win 8. i am wondering how i find and transfer user specific data for instance i have a typing tutor program my wife and i both use we have different user names and have progressed differently. once i reload applications what do i need to move from the old hard drive to restore those applications to the earlier state with all user data, id, preferences, application progress etc.is this data located in each applications folder or stored in separate locations throughout win 8
I am trying to get my external hard drives setup from a freshly rebooted installed computer. I recently placed an external hard drive with all my back up files on my computer, but this drive is not going to be my main drive. I have two others I will be using as a main hdd and a backup drive that are brand new.
So, the question is, if I were to use a utility like the Windows 8.1 disk management feature to either delete the drive letter or even change it to another one, will that mess up the external hard drive or even lose data? Because until I transfer my files to my backup disk I am afraid of losing my only copy of my files.
My friend recently bought a Windows 8 (Pro) Tablet and I suggested that she should use skydrive, but there are two unexpected behaviours:
1)On the Mordern UI I try to access files saved in the skydrive, but this only works with an internet connection.Without I only got an error/warning message that I need a connection. Why there are no data sored offline? This is a no go!How can I change this?
2)On the Desktop I don't found the folder where to store the skydrive data.I think this is a problem in connection with no (1).
I have been using Syncback SE Free for a long time now with Win7. It works well. I like the mirror function and the ability for syncback to detect small changes and allows you to view different files. When I use the mirror function in syncback, it scans the drive/folder and only copy/delete the differences leaving the rest of the files intact.
I have one main PC as my work pc, and I rotate between 2 different PC's (win 7 pro laptop and win 8 pro desktop). So I like all files on each pc to be current. Think of it as dropbox but offline with tons of data. Currently I have an external hd which I use as an intermediary between the "current" pc and the "older" pc.
After I upgraded to win 8 pro, I noticed that I can do a complete backup with syncback, but I cannot use the mirror function. Syncback does not work in deleting files either from source or target hard disk. It can detect the file changes, but unless I delete the file at the target drive, it will not copy to the target drive.
Any mirroring software which can replace syncback free which works for windows 8 pro desktop and my windows 7 pro laptop? I have tried contacting the people behind syncback (2brightsparks), and they have a knowledge based which does not tell much. It seems that windows is getting stingy with the read/write options. Following the KB discussion on syncback yields nothing in fact it is too convoluted.
I don't mind if it is a network/ethernet solution (not online storage like dropbox-but using ethernet wires) or my solution which is using an external hd as long as all my work computers are "current".
Windows 8 may be good with a tablet or laptop.... My working environment uses desk top...monitors are big and out of reach ...some workers have their 17" monitors under a glass surface top work table, so touch screen input is useless.... so can I use windows 8 with keyboard and mouse only ?
I got to the office yesterday and the PC, which I left running and working as usually, had in it's screen the common message saying the computer can't boot any device (strange since the computer was running and it's a message hat appears when booting). After trying to reboot it a couple of times, a message saying "...kernel... file is missing... try advance tools..." was shown. I tried to "refresh" the system.
Anyway, The thing is that after refreshing I have lost much more than the apps. The apps I can retrieve, It will take me half a day to retrieve almost all of the software, but doable. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DATA??? I have two drivers on the PC, C: (software) and D: (data), and it looks as if my "D:" driver had been erased or something. I see it but I can't open it (properties say it's empty and before being opened has to be formatted). I don't get it....
I have a laptop that crashed over the weekend. I need to do a restore on the computer but before I do I need to get the documents and pictures off of the drive. I've taken the drive out of the laptop and plugged it into my Windows 7 desktop using an external USB bay. I hear the computer detect the drive but it will never show up as a drive. If I look in Computer Management it shows up in there.
I have Adodbe Photoshop Elements installed on my Windows 8 PC. I am trying to upload some new actions to PSE and am being told to copy them into the Adobe file in the Programdata file. I cant find it anywhere.
I have clicked on the view/show hidden folders and still no luck.
So I've just downloaded windows 8.1 through store and it won't install because i think the file is corrupted. When i retry downloading it always want to use that corrupted file. Where can i find the 8.1 data and delete it?
I want to back up Windows 8 but in neither book do they say that you can use a USB stick or CDs only an external hard drive or a network. I've got an external hard drive that backs up my desktop (XP) can I use this as well for Windows 8 or should I just get another external hard drive solely for Windows 8 or can I use the USB Stick 32gb that I already have?
I want to update my Dell from Window 8 to 8.1 and I want to know what can I do before upgrading?I know that I need to backup the data before doing so, but how to ensure the data security while upgrading Windows 8 to 8.1?
Asus Zenbook UX51VZ / Windows 8 OEMUpgraded to Win 8.1 around three weeks agoFaced no problems (surfing, media programs, games worked fine)Last Friday during startup I received an error message telling me that something isn't correct and that windows will try to find the problemGot “directed” to the following menu Refreshing doesn't work as my hard drive seems to be blockedCan't select any restorable system images (as there aren’t any)I really don't want to format my hard drive! Tried to safe my data by looking everything up, managed to gain access to my second partition on which I had only media files. Still, I urgently need to get the files on my C: drive back.
How I recovered my data on D: :
Ubuntu Live CDBoot Ubuntu instead of windows (which can’t be booted anyways)Nautilus, selected D:/ (called DATA)Received following error message: "Error mounting /dev/dm-6 at /media/ubuntu/DATA: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=999,gid=999,dmas k=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/dm-6"
My laptop is being replaced as it has a faulty motherboard (but still works). The new laptop will be identical.
Is there any way I can clone my hdd so that when the replacement arrives I can copy all the data onto that hdd without having to reinstall all my programs etc.
I know there are various cloning softwares available, but do they work? Are they any good? and most importantly are they idiot proof??
Any best way to achieve this data transfer to new machine.
I want to move all my data from my MacBook to a laptop with Windows 8. I have everything backed up on an external HD; when I plug the HD into the laptop, it's not recognized. I've tried transferring via WiFi, but the MacBook is not allowing that to happen. Is there anything I can do with my backup HD so that it is recognized by my new Windows 8 laptop?
I recently installed Windows 8. I noticed that at some point the media tags stopped displaying in Windows Explorer for media files such as mp3 and m4b. I am talking about such tags as "title" , "bitrate" and "length" for audio files, for example. Previously this data always displayed for the same files.
This affects my collection of Music and Audio books which I am doing some housekeeping with. I can't sort mp3 and m4b them according to the tags that had been set in iTunes or mp3 tagger.
This has always worked previously and the tags have displayed fine.
I am using the "Detailed" viewing mode in Windows Explorer, but it is just empty in the columns where the tag should be, even for files which I know are tagged, and where the tag displayed previously, in Windows Explorer.
Here is what I found :
I ran sfc /scannow, but this did not solve the problem. I tried installing a shell extension called AudioShell135.exe which supposedly fixes problems with this, but it does not work for 64 bit OS. I read that a DLL called shmedia.dll is responsible for this functionality. Apparently some people re-registered this wisuccess when they had this problem. I did that, but it did not work either.
Could this be a regression in Win 8 or can others see the tag data for their mp3 files?
I have been having issues with my PC restarting and telling me something along the lines your Windows has encountered a problem and is collecting data and will restart now. So it would seem my install is corrupted in some manner.
So I have tried doing the Windows refresh but I cannot get passed the option of inserting media into drive. I place my Windows 8 64 bit professional CD into my drive and it reads it and just tell me incorrect media.
I have a question about the Windows 8 Xbox Live games save data. Are they accessible in the computer to backup? If so, where are they stored?
One thing that I really dont like about my WP7 is they keep away any access to the saves and when I had to get my phone replaced I lost all my hard work in them and never bought another xbox live game again cause of it.
