So I've just downloaded windows 8.1 through store and it won't install because i think the file is corrupted. When i retry downloading it always want to use that corrupted file. Where can i find the 8.1 data and delete it?
I need to gain access to registry stored on dead Windows 8.1 partition (as mounted system volume backup). That means it's not directly bootable, I can only access it's file structure from outside. Now I'm curious if there's a software or procedure that can locate and load registry from it and display it in some exportable format like REGEDIT4.
I used to love Windows XP's search tool because it gave you the ability to see all modified files on your PC by date. You could see what files were modified each day. This will find bits of programs installed by other programs you didn't know were installed.
For example, you install a tool from the net that cleans your drive but hidden to you, the program also installed a service called " Program Updater". You don't know this but once you look at the files that get modified each day, you can find these files. I need That functionality back in Windows 8. I assume it's there but cant find it. Where is it?
Also... I need an app that does sort of the same but it does this: - records all the bits and pieces of any install in a text file so you can look and see what hidden things that app might be installing. It should do this in real time each time you install a new program. This way when i find a suspicious file in my modified files, i can look to see what program installed that program or service so i can uninstall it.. to keep unwanted stuff off my drive.
I would prefer that certain files (like Tax and financial documents ) be stored locally. Can this be accomplished if I save the documents within the program I am using with "save as" then specify a location other than the C drive where the OS is located?
Using Windows 8.0 all up to date. I am trying to set up a DD-wrt router with a default IP Address of 192.168.1.1 which is also the default Gateway.
The previous router had 192.168.0.1 as the Gateway and I had given the laptop I am using a static IP of 192.168.0.10
When I try to access the DD-wrt it starts to work OK, but then hangs. I checked the "Properties" for the Network card and it keeps putting the old Static IP back. I go to Advance and Remove the old IP address, but it stuffs the old one back in again.
I tried using ipconfig /release but it says it can't do anything without the device connected. I feel like I am in a Hamster wheel from the Twilight Zone.
This is what "Properties" looks like after I make the changes.
192.168.1.11 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1
As soon as I click OK for that dialog and the next one, it goes back to
192.168.0.10 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1
If I go to "Advanced" both IP addresses are shown. I click "Remove" for the 0.10 and it removes it. Click OK twice and go back and the damned thing is back 0.10 and two IPs in the Advanced list again.
If I clear all adapters and set them all to "Auto IP address" I still cannot access the DD-wrt.
Is there some way to forcefully remove all stored IP addresses for the selected-Network adapters?
I am trying to get my external hard drives setup from a freshly rebooted installed computer. I recently placed an external hard drive with all my back up files on my computer, but this drive is not going to be my main drive. I have two others I will be using as a main hdd and a backup drive that are brand new.
So, the question is, if I were to use a utility like the Windows 8.1 disk management feature to either delete the drive letter or even change it to another one, will that mess up the external hard drive or even lose data? Because until I transfer my files to my backup disk I am afraid of losing my only copy of my files.
I am running Win 8.1 x 64 ... After downloading the iso file for Win 8.1, what can I expect to see?
It is downloading and will be done in 2 hours. Can I just burn it to dvd which I want or will I have to go through installation steps?
The reason I ask is because I have a product key for 8 but not 8.1. I read it can be done with a Win 8 prod key but also read that an 8.1 key is needed.
I had a Windows 8 machine & upgraded to 8.1 before I found out all the sneaky underhanded sleazy things Microsoft did. In particular pulling the useful (and in my case necessary) 'Easy Transfer' tool that was *on my machine* in Windows 8 and replacing it with a something completely useless to me and calling the same thing which it isn't.
So I'm wondering if the Windows 8 Easy Transfer is available for download somewhere and hoping it will work under Windows 8.1.
It doesn't look like the Windows 8.1 upgrade keeps any of the Windows 8 stuff in case you change your mind and want to go back, which is starting to look like a really good idea.
It's a brand-name pre-installed thing so no Widows 8 media, just a recovery partition so I can return the machine to factory with Windows 8 or even go to an OEM Windows 7 (alas no drivers). Rather odious at this point, but may be my only option.
Unless maybe there's a way to pull the Win 8 files from what's on the recovery partition (*.swm files) .
I was downloading files from an external drive that iI had used as a back up for windows vista. Now where they landed in my windows 8.1 computer and if they were only photos, music and videos. I'm having a hard time with windows 8. How do I locate the downloads. I thought of doing a system restore but I would rather locate those files.
I tried to watch downloaded .avi movies with Windows Media Player, and the video quality is very poor, can see blocks and artifacts everywhere. When I watch the same movies with VLC, it is clear. I think it is a codec problem. What is the best codec to apply to Windows 8 Media Player, so we can watch movies clearly?
I have a problem in PC I received a file PNG AND JPG form Fiverr.com some header for my site but I couldn't open the file even I ask them but I think the problem is in my PC somewhere something is blocked. All I seem to see with Win 8.1 is a full install with a 2x or 3X GB install. Is there just a standalone update that can be downloaded and added to an already existing Win 8 install?
I have just got a new laptop with Windows 8 I have downloaded Office 2010 (as I don't have a CD) but when it loaded It gives me an option to open in verious apps but none of them allows me to install to the OS ....
Windows 8 I've been trying to stop is when I download audio it automatically launches the file, it was launching audio files in the Windows 8 audio player but I managed to get that changed to default to VLC but it still launches it automatically, how can I stop this behaviour?
I'm trying to reinstall a driver for my printer but I cannot locate the file to run.
I clicked on the download command at the HP website and my computer gave me a screen asking if I wanted to save the file (not run but save). I clicked save and the download completed and apparently the file has been saved but I don't know how to get to it in order to run it. Where is it?
When ever I try to open a file, I receive the error I have attached. If I view download, right click the file I am trying to open and open it with reader, than it opens correctly. How can I get the file to open correctly without doing the work around?
How to transfer Metro apps from Ms account already downloaded to a local account??? I want to stop using ms account and only use local and keep all my apps i downloaded. is there a way to do it??
I know windows apps are saved in Programs file(hidden ) and once you get ownership permission sorted you can go to reg edit and also take ownership and change the location to another place. say from c:programfiles to D:my new location.. but i don't know how to activate and retrieve the apps once a new account is created
I recently bought an Acer Aspire E laptop but accidentally damaged the hard drive a few months later and had to replace it. My friend knows a lot about computers and has a side business fixing them and works as tech support for a company and for his university, so he installed the new hard drive for me and downloaded most of the drivers and installed them and said he would get the wireless working later. He eventually came back a few days ago to finish it up and after he left, I realized the wifi STILL was not working.
I have an ethernet cable and the thing it plugs into here in my dorm room, and the wifi works fine when connected to an ethernet, but Christmas break starts in a few days and I have no way to connect with my ethernet cable at home. I have my old laptop that I'm currently using but it's shitty and it doesn't turn on unless it's connected to the power cord so I can't really take it anywhere.
I've tried redownloading and installing all of the drivers myself but it doesn't do anything at all and I don't know enough about computers to figure it out. I did see that there is a yellow triangle next to the network controller driver so I'm assuming it probably has something to do with that being missing.
I downloaded windows 8.1 hoping it would be better than 8. I can actually open battlefield 4 which is a plus but now it does not see my graphics card! I have a nvida GTX 780 and all it says in device manager under display adapters is Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 (this was there before clearly the integrated card) and Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (which was never there before)! I have no idea what the latter one is and even worse my GTX 780 isn't listed! If it was a driver issue i could just click it and download the driver but the hardware isn't even lsited! whole windows 8 thing has ruined getting a new computer instead of enjoying I have spent the last two weeks with it trying to fix everything that doesn't work with it and now this
my old computer recently broke down so I got an extra laptop that my father had. I've been trying to play several games that I've downloaded but I need to update my graphics driver. The issue with that is the manufacturer is "(Standard Display Types)" DxDiag.txt (system information)
My account type is administrator but still at times when I try to save downloaded items or install software a message comes up saying I need administrator permissions to do that.
After I installed Windows 8 I started having the "0 KB Total, 0% Downloaded" issue while attempting to update, sometimes it does work, but most of the time it doesn't
I've just upgraded from win8 to win 8.1 using the windows update (store), my questions are :
1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.
2. If so can the backed up file be used to do a "clean install" in future on the same machine?
when I used one of my Metro App(Asphalt 8), The game showed the Gameloft logo but right after that it crashed.
Then I used another app which was Weather.. but it worked fine.. Again I tested Facebook app and it also crashed...
So then I downloaded one app (Flappy Birds Free) and it also crashed.. So I think that the downloaded apps are getting crashed.. I tried several fixes like using another user, turning off Windows Defender and Firewall, Clean booting, Updating Video drivers, scanning for viruses, using Metro apps troubleshooter, sfc /scannow, and all sorts of things.. There is only one more option left and that is to refresh Windows. But I don't have 8 CD. It got broken.. and I can't afford to buy a new one.. What should I do now?
I just bought a new windows 8 installed latpop. I used internet explorer to download firefox and proceeded to install flash, office trial java flash has been crashing all week in firefox.
I then installed skip metro suite settings to disable charm and uninstalled flash BUT now when i try to download software.
I've tried flash, spotify and fb skype function thus far nothing happens when i click on it, even in the containing folder the wait icon swirls for a bit then no action. I've tried restarting and ending processes through task bar clicking on the run as administrator button which takes me to the usual warning do you want this program to make changes.
But when i press ok, still nothing happens! I've also tried using internet explorer as the initial place of download.
