I tried to watch downloaded .avi movies with Windows Media Player, and the video quality is very poor, can see blocks and artifacts everywhere. When I watch the same movies with VLC, it is clear. I think it is a codec problem. What is the best codec to apply to Windows 8 Media Player, so we can watch movies clearly?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI only just very recently received this laptop as a gift, but as soon as I started watching movies on my Netflix account I noticed that the screen would briefly go black then return to my program. This happens very often, once every 2 to 5 minutes. And this only happens when I'm trying to watch movies. Browsing and game play is flawless. What could be the issue? It was recommended that I install Windows 8.1 upon setting up my laptop, so I did just that. I didn't play around with Windows 8 beforehand, though, so I don't know if the problem is the operating system or not.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having is my Windows 8 x64 has tons of artifacts and the mouse leaves trails that's even if it lets me into windows... however when I use the same setup on my Windows 8 x86 there are no artifacts...oh and same on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I am aware that there are still some known issues with Nvidia Chips on x64 versions of Windows 8.

Especially noticeable to the right of the House icon. This just started today or yesterday.
I tried rolling back the video driver but that messed up the computer. The desktop started flashing and only the Taskbar showed. I booted to repair menu by doing a Shift Click on restart then did a System restore to the 20th. It fixed the flashing problem but the shadow is still there.
I'm wondering if this could be a problem with my display. It's a HP w2207. I guess the easy way to find out is boot to BIOS Setup and see if there are shadows or boot a live Linux CD and see if there are shadows.
My wife has a nice new VAIO laptop. We connect it to a Samsung TV with an HDMI cable. Initially there were video artifacts on the TV screen, but after some fiddling they seemed to go away. Today they have returned. I have tried another HDMI cable and it didn't work.
The artifacts are only on the TV screen and not on the laptop display. They cannot be captured with a screenshot (I just tried this and am posting from my computer).
The web search picture (HDMI.jpg) shows small vertical lines in a row after some of the text.

But less than the height of these lines. There is also a set of the lines that follows the mouse cursor around.
The VAIO desktop picture (HDMI2.jpg) shows "sparkles" around the VAIO name and spreading to the left where it takes up the entire side of the screen.

I know that Windows 8 doesn't come with the ability to read DVD movies, by default, but I was told it was as easy as installing a multimedia player like VLC, Media Player Classic Home Cinema or PotPlayer. Well, I tried all of them and everytime I insert a DVD movies, the multimedia software hangup when trying to read the DVD. What's up with my setup?

I've got cyberlink power dvd 9.0, which has a dvd movie playback codec.. so its not a software issue.
I've also got vlc media player which comes with a dvd movie playback codec, so again, not a software issue
Could this be my drive showing signs of premature impending failure on a machine just under a year old? or is this windows stuffing up and not recognizing theres a disc loaded?

View 8 Replies View RelatedTrying to find a decent program to create a DVD from rips / downloads of movies such as MP4 / MKV etc is a pain --there's the PAID for version CONVERTXTODVD but a good one is the FREE Linux program DEVEDE (works on .RPM distros (Opensuse, fedora etc) and there's also a version for DEBIAN/LINUX MINT and UBUNTU. The created DVD will play DVD's in stand alone DVD players.
Read the documentation as it's a little bit confusing -- also ensure you have the FFMPEG package installed and either MKISOFS or the CDR-TOOLS (or any other package that contains the mkisofs library). Ignore any missing dependencies when installing using your package manager - it's usually looking for mkisofs which is often incorporated into other libraries --it works OK.
Program will add subtitles too if you want it and you can adjust the disk usage (quality will adjust to the amount of DVD space you use.
Works either on a Linux HOST or a Virtual machine - I'm testing mine on a "Portable Linux" booted up on a USB3 thumb drive.
Here's how to use the program -- the link refers to UBUNTU but the program is the same on other distros too.
I have a new HP ENVY 700-147C with 12GB RAM running win 8.1 & I have a vexing problem; I can easily mount an iso file to virtual drive from windows explorer but I am not able to play it with PowerDVD or any other player.. It sees the virtual drive but it does not load the movie only the VIDEO & AUDIO_TS folders with the VOB files are seen.
However, PowerDVD will automatically play a movie on dvd disk when it is inserted into the player & it can play it from windows explorer by right clicking on the dvd drive & 1 of the choices is "Play with Cyberlink Powerdvd." When I right click a virtual drive containing an ISO file from my HDD, showing drive letter & title, just like the DVD disk, the "Play With Cyberlink PowerDVD" choice does not appear.
When watching videos on you tube in full screen, it will leave to normal screen in one min. My drivers are up to date and system do not show any notifications for updates. This problem occurs irrespective of any browser and full screen exits on anything.

It is downloading and will be done in 2 hours. Can I just burn it to dvd which I want or will I have to go through installation steps?
The reason I ask is because I have a product key for 8 but not 8.1. I read it can be done with a Win 8 prod key but also read that an 8.1 key is needed.
I had a Windows 8 machine & upgraded to 8.1 before I found out all the sneaky underhanded sleazy things Microsoft did. In particular pulling the useful (and in my case necessary) 'Easy Transfer' tool that was *on my machine* in Windows 8 and replacing it with a something completely useless to me and calling the same thing which it isn't.
So I'm wondering if the Windows 8 Easy Transfer is available for download somewhere and hoping it will work under Windows 8.1.
It doesn't look like the Windows 8.1 upgrade keeps any of the Windows 8 stuff in case you change your mind and want to go back, which is starting to look like a really good idea.
It's a brand-name pre-installed thing so no Widows 8 media, just a recovery partition so I can return the machine to factory with Windows 8 or even go to an OEM Windows 7 (alas no drivers). Rather odious at this point, but may be my only option.
Unless maybe there's a way to pull the Win 8 files from what's on the recovery partition (*.swm files) .
So I've just downloaded windows 8.1 through store and it won't install because i think the file is corrupted. When i retry downloading it always want to use that corrupted file. Where can i find the 8.1 data and delete it?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI bought new computer parts in January and was having several BSOD issues with Windows 7. I decided to reformat using Windows 8.1 and had not had a single crash up until about 2 weeks ago. It started as a single crash. Then another a few days later. Now I'm to the point where I get several crashes a night.
Crashes tend to happen when watching videos, but has also occurred as soon as Windows finished loading from sleep or restart.
I purchased a new hard drive this evening thinking that my hard drive was the issue, as it was one of only 2 parts I didn't upgrade when I upgraded my computer (though I did reformat my HDD several times after installing the new hardware). I installed Windows 8.1 on the new HDD and installed Windows updates with no issues. But shortly after I got another couple of crashes. I cleared the new HDD and put it back in the box since the hard drive wasn't the issue, so the crash dump files I'm including are from the original HDD. I got 2 crashes on the new HDD before clearing it, and the error messages were similar to what I was getting with the original HDD. (KMODE)

I watching a video and suddenly the pc restarted and booted to motherboard screen and then restarted again, this time it booted to Windows logo.
It did this twice and then I hard shutdown the pc.
The light of the power button indicating that there's power was off.
So I unplugged the 24pin and 8pin power cables (corsair ax850)and connected from another power supply I had (gigabyte 500w) just to see if there's power coming to the board and the light was on.
So I plugged back the corsair cables back and the light was on again. I turned the pc on played a couple of games on it and everything was back to normal.
Could this be a cable issue or motherboard socket issue?

I get the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR 2 or 3 times a day. I found this mainly happens when I watch videos embedded in websites or browsing the steam store (when you browse a game there are embedded videos that play automatically in steam).
