View 8 RepliesAlright, so I just recently got a new computer that has Windows 8.1, compared to my old one having Windows 7. I tried to transfer all of the files/folders over to the new one over the network and everything worked just fine. However, whenever I tried to modify any of the files that were transferred from the old one such as a png or txt file and overwrite the original through the program, I was always given an error box that said "access denied."
I'm pretty sure this is meaning that I need to get administrator privileges from the old PC, but I'm not sure how I would do that. My only option is to save the version to another folder then move it to where the original one was.
I just received my Inspiron 15z with 32GB mSATA and 500GB HDD, and I was disappointed to find that Windows 8 is installed on the 500GB (presumably 5400 RPM) HDD. For performance sake, I expected that the OS would be installed on the mSATA drive.
I'm not sure the best way to fix this with the Recovery Media, as I've never done this before. I don't want to run into Windows activation issues, but I want to do a clean installation using the mSATA drive as my OS drive.
I don't really care about the recovery partition, since it's apparently configured incorrectly (in my opinion). I just want the OS on the mSATA drive.
I cannot open photos which I transferred from my old PC as MDI files. I have downloaded an MDI viewer but it is only free for 7 days and cannot get it to print in the right format. I have downloaded an MDI converter which gets the photos on the screen ready to print but won't print unless I pay for a license.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I transferred from Windows 7, I lost some (very important) personal files. I have searched and tried a few different things and the best I can find is to run a file recovery software which I'm hoping to avoid. I'm running Windows 8 off a Toshiba that so far I have loved but am quickly starting to regret switching to 8.

I've got cyberlink power dvd 9.0, which has a dvd movie playback codec.. so its not a software issue.
I've also got vlc media player which comes with a dvd movie playback codec, so again, not a software issue
Could this be my drive showing signs of premature impending failure on a machine just under a year old? or is this windows stuffing up and not recognizing theres a disc loaded?
I am trying to play movie from a DVD in Windows 8 RP but nothing happens.
I tried installing Windows Media Player 11 but the program told me that it already has Windows Media Player 12 ...
I tried to watch downloaded .avi movies with Windows Media Player, and the video quality is very poor, can see blocks and artifacts everywhere. When I watch the same movies with VLC, it is clear. I think it is a codec problem. What is the best codec to apply to Windows 8 Media Player, so we can watch movies clearly?

View 4 Replies View RelatedTrying to find a decent program to create a DVD from rips / downloads of movies such as MP4 / MKV etc is a pain --there's the PAID for version CONVERTXTODVD but a good one is the FREE Linux program DEVEDE (works on .RPM distros (Opensuse, fedora etc) and there's also a version for DEBIAN/LINUX MINT and UBUNTU. The created DVD will play DVD's in stand alone DVD players.
Read the documentation as it's a little bit confusing -- also ensure you have the FFMPEG package installed and either MKISOFS or the CDR-TOOLS (or any other package that contains the mkisofs library). Ignore any missing dependencies when installing using your package manager - it's usually looking for mkisofs which is often incorporated into other libraries --it works OK.
Program will add subtitles too if you want it and you can adjust the disk usage (quality will adjust to the amount of DVD space you use.
Works either on a Linux HOST or a Virtual machine - I'm testing mine on a "Portable Linux" booted up on a USB3 thumb drive.
Here's how to use the program -- the link refers to UBUNTU but the program is the same on other distros too.
I have a new HP ENVY 700-147C with 12GB RAM running win 8.1 & I have a vexing problem; I can easily mount an iso file to virtual drive from windows explorer but I am not able to play it with PowerDVD or any other player.. It sees the virtual drive but it does not load the movie only the VIDEO & AUDIO_TS folders with the VOB files are seen.
However, PowerDVD will automatically play a movie on dvd disk when it is inserted into the player & it can play it from windows explorer by right clicking on the dvd drive & 1 of the choices is "Play with Cyberlink Powerdvd." When I right click a virtual drive containing an ISO file from my HDD, showing drive letter & title, just like the DVD disk, the "Play With Cyberlink PowerDVD" choice does not appear.
Yesterday when I watched one of my favourite movies with Pot Player I got the BSOD and my computer automatically rebooted itself. I followed the procedure by making .zip file with SF_Diagnostic_Tool.exe and I uploaded the .zip in my thread.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI only just very recently received this laptop as a gift, but as soon as I started watching movies on my Netflix account I noticed that the screen would briefly go black then return to my program. This happens very often, once every 2 to 5 minutes. And this only happens when I'm trying to watch movies. Browsing and game play is flawless. What could be the issue? It was recommended that I install Windows 8.1 upon setting up my laptop, so I did just that. I didn't play around with Windows 8 beforehand, though, so I don't know if the problem is the operating system or not.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had two computers in the last few weeks where i was unable to get to the Advanced Startup functions through Settings>Change PC Settings. On one machine, clicking Change PC Settings just kept giving a blank white screen. The other PC simply would not boot. (On one of those PC's I wanted to get to Safe Mode, on the other I was looking to Refresh or Reset the OS.)
I fixed both of them by restoring to factory original settings using the manufacturer's built in function, which was ok since there was not much configuration that had been done by the user.
But I am wondering if Microsoft has built in any other ways to access Safe Mode or Refresh/Reset when the usual method does not work. Can these be accessed through the recovery boot disk? If so, are there any tutorials on this?

My primary reason to access it is to view and copy my current BCD file. I suppose a method to copy that file might be a good enough work around, at a pinch.
