Windows 8 / 8.1 Fail To Read DVD Movies (tried VLC / MPC-HC And PotPlayer)
Sep 7, 2013
I know that Windows 8 doesn't come with the ability to read DVD movies, by default, but I was told it was as easy as installing a multimedia player like VLC, Media Player Classic Home Cinema or PotPlayer. Well, I tried all of them and everytime I insert a DVD movies, the multimedia software hangup when trying to read the DVD. What's up with my setup?

I tried to watch downloaded .avi movies with Windows Media Player, and the video quality is very poor, can see blocks and artifacts everywhere. When I watch the same movies with VLC, it is clear. I think it is a codec problem. What is the best codec to apply to Windows 8 Media Player, so we can watch movies clearly?

At first I thought maybe it was the one movie(battleship), but after subsequent testing with different dvd movies, I have to ask, is it normal for the dvd drive to sometimes not recognize theres a disc loaded?
I've got cyberlink power dvd 9.0, which has a dvd movie playback codec.. so its not a software issue.
I've also got vlc media player which comes with a dvd movie playback codec, so again, not a software issue
Could this be my drive showing signs of premature impending failure on a machine just under a year old? or is this windows stuffing up and not recognizing theres a disc loaded?

Trying to find a decent program to create a DVD from rips / downloads of movies such as MP4 / MKV etc is a pain --there's the PAID for version CONVERTXTODVD but a good one is the FREE Linux program DEVEDE (works on .RPM distros (Opensuse, fedora etc) and there's also a version for DEBIAN/LINUX MINT and UBUNTU. The created DVD will play DVD's in stand alone DVD players.
Read the documentation as it's a little bit confusing -- also ensure you have the FFMPEG package installed and either MKISOFS or the CDR-TOOLS (or any other package that contains the mkisofs library). Ignore any missing dependencies when installing using your package manager - it's usually looking for mkisofs which is often incorporated into other libraries --it works OK.
Program will add subtitles too if you want it and you can adjust the disk usage (quality will adjust to the amount of DVD space you use.
Works either on a Linux HOST or a Virtual machine - I'm testing mine on a "Portable Linux" booted up on a USB3 thumb drive.
Here's how to use the program -- the link refers to UBUNTU but the program is the same on other distros too.

I have a new HP ENVY 700-147C with 12GB RAM running win 8.1 & I have a vexing problem; I can easily mount an iso file to virtual drive from windows explorer but I am not able to play it with PowerDVD or any other player.. It sees the virtual drive but it does not load the movie only the VIDEO & AUDIO_TS folders with the VOB files are seen.
However, PowerDVD will automatically play a movie on dvd disk when it is inserted into the player & it can play it from windows explorer by right clicking on the dvd drive & 1 of the choices is "Play with Cyberlink Powerdvd." When I right click a virtual drive containing an ISO file from my HDD, showing drive letter & title, just like the DVD disk, the "Play With Cyberlink PowerDVD" choice does not appear.

I only just very recently received this laptop as a gift, but as soon as I started watching movies on my Netflix account I noticed that the screen would briefly go black then return to my program. This happens very often, once every 2 to 5 minutes. And this only happens when I'm trying to watch movies. Browsing and game play is flawless. What could be the issue? It was recommended that I install Windows 8.1 upon setting up my laptop, so I did just that. I didn't play around with Windows 8 beforehand, though, so I don't know if the problem is the operating system or not.

So lately the system time on my computer wasn't telling the right time, and every time I changed it, it would just change back. So I changed the CMOS battery to what I assumed to be an identical battery, and Windows was unable to start and said I had to system restore. So I took out the old battery and put the new one in and the same thing happened. When it prompts me to restore and I click on it, I just get the black screen with the blue windows icon, minus the loading icon. What should I do?

The past week or so I have had a problem with updates for windows defender in win 8.1 failing to work. Is it from any of the last updates on patch Tuesday? or another problem. I can get the update from a windows site and install it from that but not from defender its self or windows update.

I'm trying to update my windows 8 to windows 8.1 on a HP Pavilion g7-2261sb.
However, after numerous trials, every time, the installation stops and says "failed to install. error code 0xc0000374". EDIT: I checked again and it comes after the "collecting data" part.
I've ran the update checker (compatibility), and that gave no problems or errors.

I am trying to add a new user account to my machine (Microsoft account). When complete, none of the default Start screen apps are properly installed - aside from the desktop tile, all others have a black X in the bottom right hand corner and suggest repair/reinstall when clicked.
Have tried deleting the account and starting afresh, but still the same problem. The main account is working fine, no problem with the apps. Also tried Microsoft's Windows app troubleshooter app, but no fix.
I had no problems adding users to previous Windows 8 machine. How to proceed. Machine is fully patched from Windows update.

My Dell Latitude D830 won't reboot in any manner - windows fail to start. It starts on well, shows the Dell logo, loads the files on prompt and gets stuck on one of the files with 'Please wait...'
The problem it is the only Dell machine around and I lost my recovery key. I have useful files therein that I would like to recover and backup but it would not get even to the C: prompt by any option. How can can I create a recovery disk from the web or I must get another Dell machine? This is acutely an emergency for any asap response will go along way for me.
How can I create the recovery without a dell machine?

My (12-year-old) son's computer won't boot. It's a Dell Inspiron 17" running Windows 8, bought from Costco in July 2013. When I turn it on, Dell logo comes on and then in upper left it says "Checking Media [fail]", then "checking media" again, then "No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine". I insert a USB recovery drive (it was made for my Toshiba that runs Windows 8.1, but it should work anyway, right?).
I choose US keyboard layout and it then opens into Recovery Environment. I choose Troubleshoot → Refresh Your PC. Message appears "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I go to Troubleshoot → Startup Repair, which runs and then says "Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC." I then go back to Troubleshoot → Command Prompt and run chkdsk on Windows drive (c). It says "Windows has checked the file system and found no problems." Dell would probably tell me it's a hard drive failure and tell me to buy another one.

My programs that has yellow-blue shield like this fail to autostart at log-on or windows startup. I tried many ways: registry, put their shortcuts in startup folder, changed gpedit.msc so that they start on log-on... none of them works. This problem seems to affect only programs with that yellow-blue shield (whatever its name is).

I just install windows 8 using BIOS , but now i want to change it to UEFI boot. so i followed steps below
1.create and format a new FAT32 partition K:
2.my windows8 is in I: so , i use this command bcdboot i:windows /f all /s k: and succeeded.
3.i checked with the bootice about the BCD in my K: and found it indeed point to i:windows just like the picture below [URL]
4. and i restart, choose uefi boot in BIOS configuration and it showed like this: [URL]
5. i checked my k:/windows/system32/ , there is a winload.efi file... [URL]
The most strange thing is that i've copyed my winload.efi to other computer which is already in UEFI mode , and also i've copyed it in my virtual machine, it works fine! So my winload.efi should be OK.

First, I wasn't sure if this problem is Hardware or Software. I have a Windows 8 HP 2000-2c29WM that has a problem booting.
At first when turning on the machine I get a message about the HDD not being seen or could not read. Second I took out the HDD and replaced it with another one and changed the Bios to legacy and installed Windows 7 for trail to see if I could find all of the drivers ( NO SM bus drivers), during grace period. Third I connected the Windows 8 HDD via USB to see if I could recover any files.
My original thought was a bad or dead HDD, but as it turns out I had no problem reading it. At this point I am not sure if HDD has a bad boot sector or if there is some kind of bug that has corrupted it. I believe I have only a few choices 1. Order recovery disk from HP. 2. Buying a copy of windows 7 or 3. Putting Zorin 9 (UBUNTU) on the machine.

Upgraded to windows 8 pro, worked fine for sometime, but now it does not boot- says either error loading operating system or disc read error. Re installed Windows 8 after booting with another hard drive with winXP, worked fine for sometime, then it failed again displaying the same error messages. Been using this system since long, but this has never happened before. I have reinstalled again by the same procedure, but always wary of the same problem happening again.

I'm trying to use a USB SATA/IDE adapter to read a hard drive with a Windows 8.1 64bit install on it, using a Windows 8.1 64bit machine. Unfortunately, despite the drive showing up in Device Manager and in Computer Management -> Storage, it refuses to allow me to do anything with the drive - I can't assign a drive letter, open the drive, browse any files or otherwise do anything with it. Every single option in Storage is greyed out. The drive doesn't show up in My Computer. It's completely unuseable despite being listed as Healthy and Working Properly in the device and storage manager.
I've scoured Google for hours trying to find a solution to this and so far the only thing shining any light on this problem is something being screwy with the GPT Protective Partition. Some sites say certain OSes (name XP and 7) have trouble reading a 64bit partition, but I must emphasize this partition was created by Windows 8 (later upgraded to 8.1) 64bit and is attempting to be read by the same 64bit Windows 8.1 OS.
The adapter is properly hooked up and powered. Windows can detect the drive but accessing it is a no-go. I don't understand how a Win 8 64bit partition can't be read under the same 64bit OS on a different computer. For the record I've tried this on two seperate healthy Win 8 and 8.1 machines with the exact same problem.
