Maintenance :: CMOS Battery / Windows Fail
Jul 30, 2013
So lately the system time on my computer wasn't telling the right time, and every time I changed it, it would just change back. So I changed the CMOS battery to what I assumed to be an identical battery, and Windows was unable to start and said I had to system restore. So I took out the old battery and put the new one in and the same thing happened. When it prompts me to restore and I click on it, I just get the black screen with the blue windows icon, minus the loading icon. What should I do?

I stumbled across this on another site. Win 8 has the ability to generate a detailed report about your notebook/laptop's battery. Worth a look...

OK so Windows used to warn me my battery is low when it is at 10%. However, it no longer does, so it will now shut down without warning me to plug in my charger. Why is it doing this, and what can I do to make it warn me again? It is so ridiculous that I have to restart the computer just because the battery died and I wasn't warned by the system.

previously i was using windows 7 home basic 64bit OS. My battery used to give an average backup of about 2 hours. But since the time i have installed windows 8,it gives a backup of hardly an hour. I have checked all the settings in the control panel. They are all fine and proper. The fan keeps making a buzzing sound all the time, even when the CPU usage is low. This was not the case earlier. Also, my laptop is getting heated up more compared to before. What shall i do? What steps shall i take?

The past week or so I have had a problem with updates for windows defender in win 8.1 failing to work. Is it from any of the last updates on patch Tuesday? or another problem. I can get the update from a windows site and install it from that but not from defender its self or windows update.

I'm trying to update my windows 8 to windows 8.1 on a HP Pavilion g7-2261sb.
However, after numerous trials, every time, the installation stops and says "failed to install. error code 0xc0000374". EDIT: I checked again and it comes after the "collecting data" part.
I've ran the update checker (compatibility), and that gave no problems or errors.

I know that Windows 8 doesn't come with the ability to read DVD movies, by default, but I was told it was as easy as installing a multimedia player like VLC, Media Player Classic Home Cinema or PotPlayer. Well, I tried all of them and everytime I insert a DVD movies, the multimedia software hangup when trying to read the DVD. What's up with my setup?

I run on windows 8.. I can't find out where the battery life is anywhere! It isn't in the taskbar and it isn't in the Charms bar. It is really starting to annoy me now....
I have tried going into the notifications area and changing the behaviour of it but that doesn't work either. This is what shows up.

I recently upgraded my OS from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and everything seemed to run normally. I have to connect to the internet via ethernet cable, which isn't a problem at all. However, whenever I plug in the battery charger, the ethernet connection stops working, but I can still connect via Wifi adapter.
I can't use wifi most of the time, so this does bother me a lot.

I have to refresh devices in Device Manager. It happens randomly and it's very annoying. I have also tried to search an updated driver of the battery but windows update says that it is updated.

As a student I had quite a lot of trouble with my previous laptop's battery. It had an autonomy of 4h in the beginning, but one day, while it still had 50%, it suddenly dropped to zero for some reason, and after that incident the battery has never exceeded 50% charge again. So I had to buy another one, but this one also dropped to 2h autonomy after some months, although it still showed 100% charge.
I now have a new laptop, an Asus T300LA, that I chose for its 8h autonomy. As I really wanted to take care of the battery, I searched on the internet how to deal with a li-ion, and learned that I had to drop the charge from 100% to 5% at first use, but should never let it go below 5% as it would permanently lose 20% of its capacity at once. But during the process I was too scared that the charge level shown by Windows would be false and while it would indicate 5% it would actually be less, so I plugged the laptop at 8%; and I was indeed right, as the battery level suddenly switched to 5% when I did so !
Basically I am fearing the infamous 20% battery damage occured without my knowing since the battery level indicated by Windows can't be trusted. The problem is, I don't know how to check it; with my previous laptop (Windows 7), on one battery the damage wasn't shown and it would still indicate 100% charge when filled, whereas on the other one the damage was clearly noticeable as the battery level would never indicate more than 50% even when filled up.
How can I verify if my battery is pristine or not ? If it indeed lost 20% of its capacity, should Windows 8 indicate a completely filled charge as 100% or 80% ?
Also, with maximum screen brightness Windows tells me this: "your current brightness setting might reduce battery life". What does it mean by "battery life" ? The current charge length or the whole time I can use the battery before it's good for junk ?

I am trying to add a new user account to my machine (Microsoft account). When complete, none of the default Start screen apps are properly installed - aside from the desktop tile, all others have a black X in the bottom right hand corner and suggest repair/reinstall when clicked.
Have tried deleting the account and starting afresh, but still the same problem. The main account is working fine, no problem with the apps. Also tried Microsoft's Windows app troubleshooter app, but no fix.
I had no problems adding users to previous Windows 8 machine. How to proceed. Machine is fully patched from Windows update.

My Dell Latitude D830 won't reboot in any manner - windows fail to start. It starts on well, shows the Dell logo, loads the files on prompt and gets stuck on one of the files with 'Please wait...'
The problem it is the only Dell machine around and I lost my recovery key. I have useful files therein that I would like to recover and backup but it would not get even to the C: prompt by any option. How can can I create a recovery disk from the web or I must get another Dell machine? This is acutely an emergency for any asap response will go along way for me.
How can I create the recovery without a dell machine?

I have an Asus x202e with I3, Windows 8 64 Bits. The defect is that the battery does not detect. Here's what I did: I disconnected the battery, I pressed the power button 30 seconds and not fixed. I reset BIOS F2, F9 and F10 and again not repaired. I uninstalled the Microsoft ACPI method battery and nothing. Do you think that a BIOS update will fix the fault? Mention that no longer turn on the battery.

My (12-year-old) son's computer won't boot. It's a Dell Inspiron 17" running Windows 8, bought from Costco in July 2013. When I turn it on, Dell logo comes on and then in upper left it says "Checking Media [fail]", then "checking media" again, then "No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine". I insert a USB recovery drive (it was made for my Toshiba that runs Windows 8.1, but it should work anyway, right?).
I choose US keyboard layout and it then opens into Recovery Environment. I choose Troubleshoot → Refresh Your PC. Message appears "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I go to Troubleshoot → Startup Repair, which runs and then says "Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC." I then go back to Troubleshoot → Command Prompt and run chkdsk on Windows drive (c). It says "Windows has checked the file system and found no problems." Dell would probably tell me it's a hard drive failure and tell me to buy another one.

I was wondering if it was possible to get the old, unobtrusive low battery notification from Windows 7 on Windows 8? As it stands, whenever I hit 10% battery, this huge bar pops up right in the middle of my screen and minimizes anything I might be working on. This is fine in most cases, except for when I'm gaming and end up running off a cliff while trying to get the game window back up. -_- Is it possible to just have a little popup appear above the taskbar when my battery gets low, like in Windows 7? I'm really trying to like Windows 8, but stuff like this is unacceptable.

When I shut down down, it started charging the battery. After a full charge, my laptop performs good and battery worked for almost more than 2 hours.

I know if I transfer over to the desktop version of the home screen I can find out the percent of battery power remaining by placing the cursor over the little battery icon in the lower right of the task bar. But on the native 8.1 Start (the one with the metro tiles) screen I see no way to easily check remaining battery power. I searched the Windows Store for an app that would do this and there are none that I can find. Odd because the Android Play Store has dozens of apps that do this. tell me if there is an easy way to check battery power from the Start screen?

During the Christmas season i received a shiny new SSD for my Dell 1121 laptop. I went about installing the drive following one of the many install articles on the interwebs that shows several optimization tips for SSDs. After doing so i noticed the expected increase in performance. Mostly the startup times of the OS and of most apps.
Only problem i have now is that my battery tends to die rather rapid while the system sleeps. Prior to the SSD it would seem i could leave the system on standby for a week or better with no issue. Now i am lucky if the system stays alive for a day on standby. Something that may have changed during the install or a SSD optimization thing that could have screwed with my battery life on standby?
