Dell Inspiron Running Windows 8 - No Boot Device Found / Checking Media Fail

Apr 3, 2014

My (12-year-old) son's computer won't boot. It's a Dell Inspiron 17" running Windows 8, bought from Costco in July 2013. When I turn it on, Dell logo comes on and then in upper left it says "Checking Media [fail]", then "checking media" again, then "No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine". I insert a USB recovery drive (it was made for my Toshiba that runs Windows 8.1, but it should work anyway, right?).

I choose US keyboard layout and it then opens into Recovery Environment. I choose Troubleshoot → Refresh Your PC. Message appears "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I go to Troubleshoot → Startup Repair, which runs and then says "Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC." I then go back to Troubleshoot → Command Prompt and run chkdsk on Windows drive (c). It says "Windows has checked the file system and found no problems." Dell would probably tell me it's a hard drive failure and tell me to buy another one.

Getting Check Media Error - No Boot Device Found?

Jul 12, 2014

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 15R, which I bought 5 months ago from Best Buy. Yesterday I shut down the computer normally, but when I try to restarted, after Dell logo appeared, on a black screen appeared the message: "Check media..". After a few seconds, on a black screen a new message was shown: "No boot device found. Press any key to reboot the machine".

I've looked on the internet and I saw it's a common error and everybody solved it with "Windows Boot Manager" as a first choice in UEFI Boot List Option. My problem is that I don't have this option. I have only two options:

1. UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4

2. UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6

I press F9 to setup the defaults, I changed to Legacy mode, but no results.

My BIOS Version is AO( or 0 )7

Dell XPS 12 Running Windows 8 X64 - Disk Checking Endless Loop

May 18, 2013

Dell XPS 12 running Windows 8 x64. Had it for about six weeks, and I had two problems I with it:

- every so often (maybe once a week), when I would turn it on, instead of booting into my normal startup screen, it would say 'Preparing Windows', then boot into, like, a generic account with none of my programs or files or anything... shutting down and restarting fixes that problem. A little annoying, but no big deal.

- every so often (maybe twice a week), I I'd shut it down, and I'd get the BSOD, with 'SESSION_HAS_VALID_POOL_ON_EXIT' given as the problem. I bit of Googling seemed to reveal that this was a fairly common issue with Wi8 on this particular machine, so I never worried too much about it.

I'm describing these problems because they might shed light on the NEWEST problem, which is as follows:

Did a Windows 8 update yesterday, and today I discovered that when I turn the machine on, I get 'To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second' at the Dell startup screen... I didn't press anything, but it didn't seem to go into disk-check, booting normally into Windows instead. I tried to do a disk check, and right away, it told me 'Windows has found problems with your disk', telling me I had to restart to fix them... so I did, and got the same 'To skip disk checking...' message, followed by an immediate boot into Windows instead of any disk checking. I tried to do a system restore, thinking one of the updates might be causing the problem, but when I try to do a system restore, it tells me that I have to run check-disk first (but every time I do, I get the same routine I just described above).

Boot Device Not Found - Install OS On Hard Disk

May 12, 2014

I have an HP Pavilion TouchSmart with windows 8. Model number 14-b109wm. Yesterday my laptop was working perfectly. This morning when I tried to turn it on I got a message saying, "Boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk." I clicked F2 for system diagnostics and ran two tests for the hard drive. The "quick test" said "passed." So I ran the "extensive" test and it said "not installed." I dont know what any of this means or how to fix it. I called HP and the lady barely spoke english. She said the hard drive needs to be re-seated. Again, dont know what that means. The F8 and F12 keys dont work either.

I have tried using the broadcom tool to detect the device and install the driver but that also fails to detect the module.
And when i use my second OS windows 7 bluetooth works flawlessly. So its only windows 8 not able to detect my hardware. I have also checked in device manager and there also it is not present.

Dell :: Inspiron 660s Desktop Running Win 8 - How To Create Copy Of Factory Image

Mar 10, 2013

I have a Dell Inspiron 660s desktop running Win 8.  How large of a USB Flash Drive do I need to create a copy of the factory image?  How large of a USB Flash Drive do I need to create a copy of the pre-installed applications, drivers and utilities?  The only apps I have are the standard ones that come with the 660s running Win 8.  Using Dell Backup & Recovery (Pro or Premium), I created a system backup on an external hard drive.   This resulted in my external hard drive being partitioned into DBR_Master (F), which used 31.5 GB of the 1TB hard drive; and, DBR_Boot (G), using 23.6 MB.  What is DBR_Master (F) all about?  What is DBR_Boot (G) all about?  In the event of an OS crash, will I be able to re-boot from the external hard drive?  How often is it recommended to do a full system backup?

Since a system backup does not backup applications like MS-Office, is the purpose of periodic backups to capture future fixes & revisions to the OS? Since there is still a lot of unused space on the external hard drive, is it ok to save my daily data backups to the external hard drive?  I tried to save data backups using File History to the DBR_Master (F) drive but it would not let me. I created a new folder in DBR_Master (F) but that didn't work.  I receive a message that the destination was not connected.  Where should I save daily data backups?  Last question - does it matter whether I use File History or Dell Backup and Recovery to do daily data backups? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to using one over the other -- they seem to do the same thing?

Windows 8 On Dell Inspiron - Boot To Repair Disk To Restore Image?

Dec 26, 2013

On my friend's Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows 8 will not boot. I want to boot to the repair disk to restore an image I had created. F12 on boot does not show the DVD drive as an option. I went into Setup/Boot and disabled Secure Boot, still did not show the DVD as a boot option. I went back to Setup and selected Boot List Option>Legacy. Now it shows the DVD drive as an option to boot. I booted the repair dis, went through all the dialogs to select the image I had created, but when it goes to restore it it says it cannot because the image was made in UEFI, and it is now set for BIOS.

I went back into Setup/Boot and I see that the option Load Legacy Option ROM is now Enabled, it did it on its own. As a test I set it back to the defaults and re did it as above, and again it automatically changes Load Legacy Option ROM, which I assume is what is creating the problem.

So my question is what do I need to do to boot from the Windows Repair Disk?

Dell PC Inspiron 600 - Win 8 / 7 Dual Boot Gone Wrong

May 19, 2014

I was wanting to dual boot a Dell pc inspiron 600 with win 8. I thought I will breeze through it like I used to circa WXP/Vista/W7 and didn't research what changes there might be with Windows 8. I have focused my attention more on Android and I really should have done that research.

I hadn't backed up externally docs that I needed to save - so I will remove the drive and copy the contents to my laptop to be on the safer side. So the first wrong move has led to missteps.

I downloaded Easus and created a blank disk space before the current active partition instead of behind it. I thought I needed to have win 7 in the first partition. Before rebooting I also installed a popular freeware boot selection manager (I totally forget the name but I know some most will know the one I am referring to EDIT: ***EasyBCD*** ). It gave me a warning that no bootable system was selected. I kept editing to point it to current Windows 8 but nothing changed. It also warned me that my pc might not boot. I thought I will fix it to a bootable drive with my old discs-Ultimate boot cd, CPM, etc. Easus performed creation of the new partition and then trouble started. It refused to boot.

None of my discs are working as they did before Windows 8. on UBCD Fdisk cannot find any partition it can make active. I decided not to write an new MBR. My windows 7 install CD is giving me the "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition X" details ->"The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

Here are the partitions

My questions are: At this point I don't mind to have only windows 7 installed or if this situation is salvageable a dual boot then I don't have to remove the drive to copy the docs. I can just boot into 7 (which is what I mainly want to use) and just have access to Windows 8 partition from there to access my docs. I would prefer not to pull the drive out if I can avoid it but only if I know for sure what I am doing.

Second question : I believe partition 3: 489GB is the newly created one and Part 4 OS would be the Wind 8 partition. How can I know for sure that this is the wind 8 partition?

If I format the partition 3: 489GB will windows now allow for windows 7 to be installed?

Is there any way I can fix windows 8 partition to boot?

Lastly the basic question is how do I fix this error so that I Can install windows 7?

I don't have any pre-created OS discs of Windows 8. My current laptop is a toshiba win 7.

Dell :: Inspiron 3537 - Boot To Recovery UEFI BIOS

Apr 14, 2014

So, I got a Inspiron 3537 i5. Nice laptop for it's price. Downloaded all the manuals, made my recovery DVDs. All was well in my world.

First thing I noticed is that there is no info in the manuals for tweaking the BIOS and since it is my first experience with a UEFI bios I was a bit disappointed. Is there a manual available for it?

Next I upgraded ATI Drivers to 13.12. I am an old user who always knew that updates were usually a good thing to do. Got in the same problem as many others with PC screen not waking up from sleep.

Thought I would do a recovery from the disk, but after trying various combinations (Ctl+F11, F8, F12 etc) I couldn't find a way to boot in the Recovery console. I did the recovery from my DVD and the laptop works fine.

How to add in UEFI bios a boot option to the Recovery partition? I undersstand that I have to create a new boot option using "Add boot option" and the two options available are to boot to the 1st (windows EFI) or 2nd (recovery partition), but the path for the recovery efi file to be loaded is unknown (+ you can't have access to the recovery partition to see the contents of it from windows).

Setup Installation :: Dell Inspiron 7720 - Unable To Change Boot Drive

Oct 20, 2013

I have a Dell Inspiron 7720 Win 8 x64 PC which includes UEFI (described in Microsoft link below). However, UEFI is accessed on Win 8 from Settings Charm > "Change PC Settings". This requires that you have booted the system already. In case of a main disk crash, you need to boot from another drive, like a thumb drive.

During restart my Dell PC displays "F12 Boot Options" in lower right of screen during restart, but multiple presses of F12 during startup are ignored. Likewise when I try F1 or F2 during startup. So I have no way to specify an alternate boot drive.

I am thinking maybe my PC is defective, but also maybe I'm missing something. What is UEFI? - Microsoft Windows Support

Hardware Drivers :: Windows 8 Unknown Device Found

May 14, 2013

First my computer when bought came pre installed with Windows 7. As soon as Windows 8 came out I upgraded to Windows 8. My system is BIOS not UEFI. I have about 3gb ram and 500gb hdd drive 2.20 ghz processor. Windows 8 runs really smoothly. So recently 2-3 days ago I decided to dual boot Ubuntu with Windows 8. Before when I had Windows 7 I dual booted it with Windows 8. So now I thought about dual booting with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The Installation process was fine until I take out the installation usb with Ubuntu and whenever I try to restart it the PC would hang on the oem screen for a while which is ridiculously long.

Then when I would boot into Windows 8 and sign in I would get a notification message saying the last storage device you plugged in isn't found. I went to the device manager in Windows and it would say an unknown device has been found and even if I tried to Uninstall it would come back again. I tried searching for updates but nothing came up. I googled it and got no results. What annoys me the most is the PC hanging on the oem screen. Right now I fresh installed Windows 8 so it's the only OS running at the moment. But I want Ubuntu 12.04 LTS because of git, ssh and all the server side stuff. I have also posted the error screenshot for more info.

New HDD - Broken MBR (no Bootable Device Found)

Then I opened up command prompt under advanced menu and ran:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

None worked, probably because of "element not found" error. I also tried with diskpart where I manually selected (see screenshot) SSD system partition for active one, but still without any luck.

I also created bootable Minitool Parition Magic USB and ran Rebuild BCD from there and it still didn't work.

Bootrec - The Requested System Device Cannot Be Found

Jul 8, 2013

I bought a new computer in April, and Windows 8 lasted for about 8 weeks before refusing to start. I managed to get into a dos enviornment and copy my data (about 7700 photos). Who knew that I still remembered xcopy!

Anyway that whole sad story is here:

FILEBCD ERROR CODE: 0xc0000034

I'd prefer to not have to reformat everything and start from scratch (though now that I've ignored Costo and Dell's advice to write off my pictures and do that at the start it is at least an option I am willing to consider).

So I've been playing with bootrec to try and fix my

FILEBCD

ERROR CODE: 0xc0000034

Problems. Not that I know a anything about this process. So what I did was:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

And get a response:

"Successfully scanned windows installations.
Total identified Windows installations: 1
Add installation to boot list? Yes<Y>/No<N>/All<A>:

No matter which choice I make I get:

The requested system device cannot be found.

Am I missing some sort of parameter?

Win 8 Dual Boot 2xSSDs - Checking / Repairing Drives On Bootup

Jul 21, 2014

I have Windows 8 installed on 2 Samsung SSDs - one is 840 Pro and the other is 840 Evo. This is because I work on both video and music production and would like to keep things separate.

At first I tried cloning an "old" SSD on to both Pro and Evo to make life easy, but it was a total mess:

I would boot Windows 8 on either Evo or Pro, and before the password prompt, Windows would fire up a Checkdisk on one (or more) of the 5 HD I have (please find the logs and disklayout in the attachments).

This would usually happen if for eg, I'm working on Evo and then I restart to work on Pro - or vice-versa.

But sometimes I would be working on either one of them, and this flag notification would popup asking me to restart because Windows needs to perform a diskcheck.

What is strange to me is that if I do a manual diskcheck (right-click -> Properties -> Tools), it would complete it, the notification disappears but would return a second or two later.

There was a minor issue where for eg, some options in the Control Panel were still pointing to drive H: which before the cloning, was my original C: drive.

Otherwise all software was working perfectly fine.

So I decided to do a clean re-install on both Pro and Evo hoping to solve this diskcheck issue once and for all.

This was 10 days ago, and for the past 10 days I had used almost exclusively the Evo drive. Today I need to work on Pro but Windows wouldn't get past the diskcheck and on to the password prompt.

It's saying "Preparing for Repair", then changes to "Diagnosing your PC" but then this blue screen pops up asking me to choose between Shut Down or Advanced Options.

This happened on rare occasions, but before the fresh install, I would do this perhaps a couple of times in a row (i.e. go to the blue screen Advanced Options and click Exit and Continue to Windows 8) restart, and it would eventually go past the diskcheck and allow me to log in and work. But today it just won't do it.

EDIT: I don't know if it matters but as it is now, it automatically boots up on Pro unless I hit F12 and choose to boot on Evo. But as I said earlier I had only been using Evo for the past 10 days since the re-install.

Attached please find the Srt logfiles which I found by following a path shown to me on that blue screen.

The strange thing is that the path started with drive H: and why drive H: and not C: (i.e. the Pro drive, being the current Windows boot drive). But when I booted on Evo, and went on drive J: (the drive letter that Pro is assigned when I'm on Evo), I found the logfiles there.
