My programs that has yellow-blue shield like this fail to autostart at log-on or windows startup. I tried many ways: registry, put their shortcuts in startup folder, changed gpedit.msc so that they start on log-on... none of them works. This problem seems to affect only programs with that yellow-blue shield (whatever its name is).

I don't need to know how to add or remove programs from the startup folder, and I'm not talking about security or system programs. I'm talking about some programs I've added to my computer, which I use all the time in my research work, and I just want them to wind up in a different order on my taskbar for ease in switching back & forth, making notes, etc.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi'm running Windows 8 Home Premium.I'd like to increase my startup speeds, I already disabled as much as I can in Task Manager, msconfig, etc.In the Task Scheduler, it shows Metro Apps are taking CPU time at startup though. After much searching on the topic, I find very little about how to disable the Metro Apps from starting up. The main one I want to disable is "Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging". I do not want to uninstall them, I just do not want them to do anything until I open them. It takes over 2 minutes of CPU time at startup for that one Metro App to fully load, and most of the time I never use it.
I have tried going into the Permissions of the App, and I disabled all of its Permissions to run in background of lock screen and everything. Still, it loads in Task Manager and takes CPU time.
I have Peerblock to start up with the computer (it has an icon set inside the Startup folder by me), yet that program never runs; I have to click that listing inside the Startup folder manually for it to start. I have two other programs in there to start with the computer, and the both run the way they're supposed to. Why is this program procrastinating to start up with the computer?
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor example it starts SpeedFan without any problem, and with same settings, or even in the same Task, if I add for example other .exe software like FTP server software Gene6 FTP Server it simply doesn't start for any reason and nothing happens and it has to be started manually by mouse-clicking on .exe each time computer is booted up.
On Last Run Result column it says 0x800702E4. And it gives various 0x results for various programs that don't run.
Also simply dragging shortcuts to Startup folder don't work either. But like I said, not all .exe programs, some work and some don't, just like 50/50 I simply don't get it.
I use Comodo Antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall, but all those programs I need has 100% permissions granted.
My Toshiba laptop after auto updates is not booting. I used windows 8 backup dvd but still not booting. I tried automatic repair using the dvd but it failed. How to set it right without loss of data on the laptop?
View 2 Replies View RelatedLast night I was playing League of Legends when I got a BSoD. I didn't think much of it, and just waited for my computer to restart. However, as it restarted, I saw that it was auto repairing and then diagnosing. After that it said auto repair failed, giving me the directory c:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttrail.txt. I tried system refresh, which shoot me back system refresh failed straight away. The same happens with system restart, but it takes much longer for it to say the restart failed. I have no system restore points to choose from and I have no recovery disks as Windows 8 came preinstalled on the computer. I've troubledshooted for hours and come to opening SrtTrail.txt with the command prompt. It says:
Root cause found: The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair.

I am trying to add a new user account to my machine (Microsoft account). When complete, none of the default Start screen apps are properly installed - aside from the desktop tile, all others have a black X in the bottom right hand corner and suggest repair/reinstall when clicked.
Have tried deleting the account and starting afresh, but still the same problem. The main account is working fine, no problem with the apps. Also tried Microsoft's Windows app troubleshooter app, but no fix.
I had no problems adding users to previous Windows 8 machine. How to proceed. Machine is fully patched from Windows update.
Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.
In Task Manager-Startup I have several programs (Adobe stuff) that I want out of there, I know I can just disable them but I want them removed. They used to be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun or HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun but in Windows 8 they aren't. I can view the file locations but can't figure out what's causing them to startup when Windows starts.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Lenovo G505s AMD A8 Laptop, fairly new to Windows 8 as this is my first platform running it. Not had the system long, but generally finding it ok except for this one problem thats decided to arise:
All apps, including the Windows Store fail to launch when clicked. They display a splash screen but no loading symbol, the splash screen hangs for about a minute and then the whole app shuts off again. This started with the calculator from what I can see, but now it seems to affect all of them. I've tried multiple theories from several forums and sites but nothing has made a difference.
If possible I don't want to have to refresh or reinstall Windows 8 as I have a fair amount of software I've installed and don't want to have to go through installation all over again.
Just found out that when I go to Startup items from Task manager and msconfig, Startup is not populated at all. All the items set to start are working and visible, just no listing in Startup for any. System scan including Dism comes up clean as a whistle and so is malware detection. Haven't checked since newest updates but can's see a reason for them to do only that.

Recently, whenever I restart my computer or shutdown->startup, I notice that startup programs (e.g the Logitech Application for my mouse, Google Drive sync etc) do not run unless I sign out and sign back in. I can constantly replicate this.
I'm not sure if this has to do with me disabling hibernation (I did this on day one of getting my notebook).
The problem with this situation is that I disable my touchpad because I have a wireless mouse, but on occasions where I don't have a mouse available, I can press the Asus instant-on button and I have it set to toggle the touchpad on/off function. Because the startup services aren't loading, I'm unable to use that button now and I'm stuck using my keyboard to try to manually turn it on.
So I've been experiencing this pretty much from the first day after installing Windows 8.1.
It goes as follows:
1. I power on the PC (or restart), windows boots up, I put in the password and it is fairly quick to enter destkop mode.
2. Now this is when my issue occurs, the startup programs may take up to 2 minutes to start load.
This is not because my computer is slow or anything like that, it almost seems like there is a set delay and only then my programs are allowed to start loading. Once they start loading, it only takes couple of seconds. The problem is, they won't start - only after I hang in destkop for about a minute or two.
I have Office 2010 which came preinstalled on my Dell 8300 XPS. I have the key and have recovered the program in the past.
If I Refresh my pc, and find the folder Windows. Old, can I get the Office program out of it or do I have to download from a site and install again?
Obviously I don't know what is in the folder nor what it allows you to retrieve . I do know that when done with it you can delete it.
I can retrieve some of the programs and apps that refresh removes and that is not hard to do. Perhaps I just open the folder, locate the program, and copy and paste it or click 'reinstall'.
Every time I connect my camera to the USB, the Photo App automatically launches and it is driving me nuts. I wouldn't mind using the Photo App but it doesn't give me any option to delete the photos once transferred. I am aware I can right click the device in My PC and Import that way, (like the Windows 7 of old), but the App still opens forcing me to close the screen! I've clicked on the Default setting for Photos and chose Do nothing but the photo App still automatically launches!!! What can I do? I just want the Windows 7 method of importing.

Also I have similar problem with system restore.I disabled it, but system turned it on again.
Skype on 8.1. When I look in the task manager->start up its not listed.
However, I then get messages and calls - so it must be running
Of course, with the tile version there are no settings that I can find to turn the darn thing off and it doesn't appear in the system tray.
How can I take control over skype so that it launches when I want it to?
Windows 8 seems to detect my Xbox 360 and it automatically installs the SmartGlass app. While I quite like what SmartGlass can do, I have no need for it. If I uninstall it, it will just auto-install again next time I use my 360. How can I prevent this from happening?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having issues with Office 365... and frankly I would never sign up for a subscription service, but I got a great deal since I am a student on a multi-year subscription. I don't think my issue is subscription related, but is related to the office products.
I am running Windows 8.1 with all of the high priority updates installed, on my Acer Aspire desktop system with a I3 processor, maxed out memory, an SSD for OS/programs, and the original HDD for most data. The system came with Windows 7, and was upgraded to 8 shortly after I bought it, then 8.1 when it became available. I believe that the Windows 8 was loaded from DVD I burned as part of installing the SSD, and was a clean install. I mention this all in case there is some potential unedrlying issue based on the upgrade path.
I am running Avast (paid version) which runs clean when I scan.
The issue is that every office program I have tried fails almost immediately, when I either open a document, or if I select a document in Windows Explorer.
I have uninstalled Office completely then reinstalled.
Then I uninstalled, removed application's directory, cleaned a couple of registry keys manually, then reinstalled.
I have only installed one app that I can recall since the last time the office products worked for me, and that is Quicken Willmaker 2014. I have printed my will, so I will be uninstalling to see if it matters. Since it worked, I don't recall any Office related updates being downloaded.
Whether or not that program removal solves the issue, I plan to download and try CCleaner...
One other possible issue. It has always been flaky for me, but my IE 11 seems even more finicky than usual... This might be unrelated, or in my head, but I thought I would mention it in case it is relevant. I have not noticed any issues with other applications or functions.
Anything obvious that I am missing or that I should add to my to-do list?
I have the new laptop with Windows 8.Is there any way you can change the apps on the start menu to be programs so I can view them as windows on my Desktop? Like Skype and Video or Music. Because I don't really like having to change from app to app to app to desktop to do what I want.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Win 8. On my brand new computer (Asus X 550BL) I've included several apps in my startup folder. Some of them run at system start and some don't.
My Firefox starts from startup ok. A batch file used to run my WAMP server works ok as well.
But my attempt to startup WinAmp fails to start. Manually clicking my WinAmp desktop shortcut works fine, but it won't 'auto' startup when that same shortcut is included the startup folder.
This all worked fine in Win 7.
All the startup folder items are set to run as a admin.

My Intel HD 4600 graphics puts 3 little apps to be started automatically. I know they are related to: intercepting hotkeys - hkcmd.exedisplaying tray icon - igfxtray.exedisplaying settings GUI - igfxpers.exe The thing is that I don't use hotkeys and have disabled them in Intel Graphics options, I've also removed Intel Graphics icon from the tray.
Thus, I'd expect the first two Intel apps to be removed from items set to auto-start at system bootup. However, they are still there. Is it correct? Shouldn't they be disabled when related functions are turned off?
Is it safe to simply delete the related registry entries and leave only the last app?

View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since the latest 8.1 patch/update in April win store launches automatically every time I start or restart my PC even though I have launch to desktop by default. I have made sure there are no pending store app updates and I have tried every setting possible but can't stop that app from launching. I don't have any windows mods installed.
I even tried the registry setting provided from this site (Store - Enable or Disable in Windows 8) but the app still launched giving me the message that the "Store isn't available on this computer".
I have looked in task scheduler, but I don't really know what to look for (looks like if i'm idle for 20-30 seconds after start the store launches). Same goes for the event viewer, there is just too much to sift through and again I really don't know what to look for. In services the "WSService" is stopped.
How to stop that app from launching, I have a local account.
I'm on win 8 x64. I just did a fresh install and got all the updates. Everything seems fine except there r a few programs that I can't get to run. These programs install with no errors but when I try to run them they won't open. These programs worked before so I know they're not the problem and they're all legit. I emailed the support people but haven't heard anything yet.

Farstone Total Recovery Pro. When I try to run it nothing happens and it doesn't show in task manager.

2) install a program (not an app from the app store), like Photoshop ...
Will I have to re-install that program once I update to 8.1 RTM? Or, are the re-installs associated only with apps downloaded from the store?
