I enabled display hidden and system files, but system auto-disable its... I make it about three times, always with the same result. I don't know what causes this problem, I can't reproduce its (it isn't after reboot).
Also I have similar problem with system restore.I disabled it, but system turned it on again.
I have the folder "Download master" and "Eltima Software" can be seen via program "flash decompiler" where as under windows explorer it doesn't show it. on rightside you can see I disable all hidden system files, enable show hidden files, I have also tried to type in directory path on the top of window explorer and nothing works, although I'd assume cmd will work and will show under dir but thats not what I want.I have also searched net can't find any information about this Download Master folder and its around 2 MB.

I really need a solution to permanently disable auto maintenance in 8.1.
I've tried everything in task scheduler. I've disabled 'Idle Maintenance' & 'Regular Maintenance' ... and I was finally able to find a way to disable 'Maintenance Configurator'. However, the 'custom triggers' for the latter are impossible to disable as is the 'daily trigger' which keeps re-enabling itself.
The auto maintenance is a law unto itself. It doesn't run when the system is idle. It runs whenever it feels like it ... which is usually when I'm browsing, streaming etc. I've put up with this for long enough. There has to be a permanent solution.
Win8XX---Running an HP machine with Windows 8.1 Pro, almost NEVER connected to the web, used only to record antenna TV broadcasts via Hauppauge tuner cards.
My issue is wanting to go and stay in sleep mode but MCUpdate engages about 3am every morning bringing it out of sleep mode and never returning. This is most probably due the auto MC update as its looking for an internet connection but can't find one.
How do I find and disable that auto update feature? For the time being its simply unnecessary.
I am primarily a "slightly competent" linux user, I dislike UEFI, Win 8 and M$ (in that order, most of the time).

Is there any way to stop Win 8 automatically creating restore points, but still allow manual creation of points? Or at least "protect" important restore points.
I recently decided to restore a manual point to find Win 8 has deleted all of my points and replaced with "others". I realize I could increase the storage area, but I don't want that, as I'm always short of disc space.
I prefer to keep my home WiFi network from public view by disabling the SSID broadcast, i.e "hiding" the network.
With two modem/routers (a Belkin Play Max F7D4401 ADSL modem/router and now a Cisco EPC2325 DOCSIS modem/router) on two computers (home-built desktop and Acer TM8172T notebook), after the initial connection Windows 8 Pro would not reconnect without tediously re-entering the SSID name and password. Once it does connect, it displays the original SSID name with a new one with an incrementally increasing appended number like:
I was manually deleting them all (except the original) using netsh, until I realized you can <right-click> on an entry in the screen above and choose "Forget this network."
This is the process I go through each time to re-connect. Is there something I'm missing?
I read that if Windows 8 saves too many WiFi connections, it cannot "remember" them to automatically reconnect to them, so on the notebook, I deleted all but wpcTrue (the original), and it now automatically reconnects, although occasionally it will add a new connection with an incrementally increased number -- currently the notebook shows both wpcTrue and wpcTrue 2. I had used the notebook on the road, so had about five WiFi connections saved. On the Desktop my home network is the only WiFi connection I've ever made. However, no matter what I do on the desktop, it NEVER remembers to automatically log on when the SSID is not broadcast.
I even tried manually setting up a connection via Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network, to no avail -- the desktop computer will not automatically reconnect.
I doubt that this is relevant, but the Belkin modem/router, the Belkin USB adapter I use on my desktop computer, and the notebook's Broadcom internal modem are all b/g/n. The Cisco modem/router is b/g.
If I "unhide" the SSID, i.e. broadcast the SSID, all is well in the world. Both computers automatically reconnect to the modem/router. If I hide the SSID, and then disconnect or reboot, the desktop computer will not automatically reconnect.
I just noticed that the pop up WiFi connection column shows "WiFi-2 Off" -- what does the "Off" mean?
And, why is it "-2" ? My notebook just shows "WiFi', period. (The first image with "WiFi (Off)" was from a previous Windows 8 installation on the desktop computer. I decided to change from EFI-boot to non-EFI so reinstalled Windows 8. I simply used the old image as a quick way to show how the connection name assignment runs away.)
Any way to auto disable the touch pad when an usb mouse connected to the machine? and auto enable it again once the usb mouse is unplugged?

I configured TASKSCHD.MSC for a restore point to be created at 11 pm weekly, but not dice. I just changed the time to create a SR point daily at 7:15 AM to see if a SR point would be created. In Control Panel, there is not record of the SR point, but Task Scheduler says the 7:15 point was completed successfully. However, I can't find it in Control Panel.

If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell laptop Inspiron 15R 7537 that came with Windows 8. Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 8.1. Everything seemed to work fine after the upgrade. I shut down and re-booted several times with no issues. When I turned the computer on as usual today, I got the log in screen, then it briefly went to the desktop, then came a gray screen that blocks 99% of the desk top. This gray screen says "please wait" and has a cancel button at the bottom. It hangs forever and the cancel button doesn't work. It gives no other information.
I read several threads on the Microsoft Windows forum and this seems to be a common problem. How to boot using the Windows 8 recovery media disk that came with the Dell computer. I selected Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Automatic Repair. I got a message that it couldn't do an automatic repair, so that didn't work. Next I tried System Restore, but I got a message that there were no restore points available from which to restore. Just to clarify - the Recovery Media Disk I have from Dell is for Windows 8 - not 8.1 - so maybe that's the problem.
The computer is totally worthless the way it is now, so unless there is some fix for the hanging gray screen in Windows 8.1, I would be happy just to reload the original Windows 8 Operating System. At least that worked.
I run a copy of Windows 8 in a Bootcamp partition on my Macbook Pro and stupidly deleted the Windows.old folder manually rather than through the disk cleanup and now Windows 8 wont startup. I now get stuck in the Auto Repair and none of the Advanced features seem to work.
I originally installed via a Windows 8 upgrade bootable USB and that isn't being recognised by the Auto Repair when i try to restore.
I don't mind losing the data in the partition (i only use it to run a Windows program needed for work), but the issue here is that i don't have an original Win7 image anywhere to reinstall - only the Windows 8 Upgrade bootable USB thumb.
Is there any way i can fix this without having to find a full image of either Win7 or Windows 8 and reinstalling from scratch? Is it failing to boot up because for some reason things were still pointing to the Windows.old folder?
I have a Windows 8 Pro install with Media Center and have auto-hide checked in task bar options and it will hide once and then will stay up forever. My Laptop has the same thing checked in control panel but it hides the task bar no problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have set Defender to do a quick scan in task scheduler for 1 AM. Auto Maintenance is set for 3 AM. I got up this morning to check Defender to verify the newly created quick scan and it was successful but stated it ran at 3 AM. Since I have allowed system to 'wake up' from sleep to do the quick scan, I am afraid the laptop is being awakened at both 1 AM by task scheduler and 3 AM by Auto Maintenance.
It runs as part of Automatic Maintenance, which IIRC runs daily when your computer is idle.
today i came home to my alienware x51 in some dell system recovery screen, i asked my kid what happened today she said the lights flickered several times, during a freak storm, So my pc must have tried to auto start several times, this is not good at all, i'm so lucky no damage was done at least so far. But how do i stop this behavior from happening again is there a setting i can turn off, so if we have another light flicker or loss of power that it never does it again. I just hope in the long run that my computer is not damaged who knows how many times it tried to reboot.

On the Win7 PC, it will auto login without typing either user account password and it does this each time I reboot. On the Win 8.1 PC it will only start up once without needing either of the user account passwords, but then after each reboot, the users login screen displays and I need to select an account and put in the password for the account. How do I get the Win 8.1 PC to login automatically each time I reboot? Where should I look in the registry?
Netplwiz seems to be the same on each PC. The registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE MicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon is similar on each PC although the Win 8.1 PC has a few extra entries. I do not have ForceAutoLogon in the registry on the Win 7 PC and I do not want to add this in to the registry in the Win 8.1 PC because then Remote Desktop Connection will not be able to connect.

I'd like to make a new user group that get's auto logged off when idle for say an hour but leave the others running 24/7.
I have a bit of a problem here. I wanted to clone a 2tb sata disk from a karaoke machine, and when I inserted it into my NL54 HP server running windows 8 to perform the clone (to a new 2tb drive), the clone was successful. However, upon inserting the new disk in the karaoke machine, it just caused the karaoke machine to hang. Similarly inserting the original disk caused the same issue.
My question is, if Windows 8 alters or writes to (in any way) a new hard disk installed for the first time? I don't know the exact details of how the disk was previously formatted, however when I did install it in my HP server it auto showed up as a drive and files/folders were accessible - hence I assume it was NTFS.
What I really wanted to do was to do a clone whilst keeping the original write protected, however I don't think there was any pins on the sata disk to protect against this, so my options were limited anyway.
I do a lot of scheduled recording with my Windows 8/x64, tuner card, Xbox extender set up. I've been using MCE Standby Tool to be able to automatically go in and out of standby or hibernate mode for unattended recording. It worked great until I upgraded to Windows 8 and now won't go into Standby again automatically after recording a program.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWas playing with a Windows 8 machine today and noticed that it would scroll the start screen by having the mouse simply to the right side of the screen...without having to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen.
What enables that, is it a driver, is it built into Windows 8, etc? I've got some other laptops around running Windows 8 and with an external mouse attached, they aren't auto scrolling.
Yesterday I did a few things on laptop, nothing special. Shut down the laptop, girlfriend tried to log in a few hours later and upon entering her password she gets kicked back out to the login screen.
Booted mini windows xp from hirensbootcd, checked registery and nothing fancy there in the winlogon strings.
I did manage to enable the guest account and add an extra administrator account. The guest account works (no taskbar tho) but everything else seemed to work. The freshly made admin account did not work, same story as my girlfriends account, enter password > back to login screen.

8.1, built upon 8, will not auto-sleep as its predecessor did.
Hybrid SLEEP has been tested both on and off, fast shutdown is off.
Monitor shutdown is 10' and CPU's is :15.
Latest video driver is installed.
"Power' troubleshooter has been run. The only issue reported: "screensaver is enabled" - which it is not (blank).
So system was running perfectly (custom pc, win 8, samsung pro ssd), just did a clean install, fresh drivers, etc. It was running great! ASUS Sabertooth p67 mobo, latest bios.
Then out of the blue, mid game, i get a hard lock up stall. no blue screen but just lock up. shut down and when i reboot, bios didn't find my samsung ssd. unplugged my 2nd sata drive, booted again and now it found the samsung ssd however i got the "no disk found press ctl alt delete"
At this point i ran windows recovery console and did the bootrec fixboot, fixmbr, rebuildbcd, chkdsk party. everything said it was completed successfully.
Now when i boot however i am stuck in an auto repair loop and can never boot into windows 8.
I am thinking the crash is somewhat power supply and/or mobo related. new power supply is on the way and mobo being RMA'ed.
