Auto Login To New 8.1 Preview?

View 5 RepliesApparently, Microsoft has established a new requirement for the 8.1 Preview where one must use a valid Microsoft account login (I could not find an easy way to establish just a local login). With that said, you can create an auto-login process, using your Microsoft account, so you can bypass the requirement to manually type a password. This bypass is only recommended for those who maintain their PC/Laptop in a secure environment:
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup
Can I stop windows from asking me to enter my password for microsoft account every time i turn on my laptop? I tried using local account it worked but i had to use microsoft account again to get access to app store and mail app.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Win7 PC and a Win 8.1 PC, each with an admin and a user account and all accounts have passwords. On the Win7 PC, it will auto login without typing either user account password and it does this each time I reboot. On the Win 8.1 PC it will only start up once without needing either of the user account passwords, but then after each reboot, the users login screen displays and I need to select an account and put in the password for the account. How do I get the Win 8.1 PC to login automatically each time I reboot? Where should I look in the registry?
Netplwiz seems to be the same on each PC. The registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE MicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon is similar on each PC although the Win 8.1 PC has a few extra entries. I do not have ForceAutoLogon in the registry on the Win 7 PC and I do not want to add this in to the registry in the Win 8.1 PC because then Remote Desktop Connection will not be able to connect.
I've been trying to set my brothers laptop to auto log in the user account without password using control userpasswords via command prompt but i'm having problems.
I supposed to get this screen below
But I get this screen below and can't change the to auto login
I went from XP to Windows 8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.
With Windows 8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.
I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to.
I enabled display hidden and system files, but system auto-disable its... I make it about three times, always with the same result. I don't know what causes this problem, I can't reproduce its (it isn't after reboot).
Also I have similar problem with system restore.I disabled it, but system turned it on again.
Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.
Here's what happened:
I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.
I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.
Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).
I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:
1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name
So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.
I was never given the option to upgrade to 8.1 official from the preview. Now the preview has just told me it expired and will reboot itself every couple hours. I'm in the middle of a huge project right now. I was actually planning to buy a new computer in the next week

I edited the registry at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced and added both a DisablePreviewWindow and DisablePreviewDesktop value and set them to 0x01. Still, the windows appear. UAC is entirely disabled.

On x86-based Windows systems, both Windows Store/Metro-Style and Desktop apps will need to be reinstalled.
Because some folks I talk to these days are mixing "apps" and "programs" into the same bag, I want to clarify something ... per the above quote, if I
1) install 8.1 preview; then,
2) install a program (not an app from the app store), like Photoshop ...
Will I have to re-install that program once I update to 8.1 RTM? Or, are the re-installs associated only with apps downloaded from the store?
This is a 64-bit system running 8.1 Pro. I am unable to preview any files (.doc, .docx, .txt, .pdf, .xlsx, etc.) in the preview pane of File/Windows Explorer. I can preview pictures, but that's it. The only thing that I've been able to find online are uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails" and using the Adobe Reader preview handler x64 fixer tool. Neither of these solutions have worked. What else can I try?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem here, in the last two days, I can't see any preview of my pictures (not only pictures, but videos too). I've tried cleaning the old thumbnails using Disk Cleanup, but no work. Trying to untick the "Always show icon, not thumnail" in Folder Options, don't work too. Here is the screenshot:

Recently I installed latest Windows 8.1 update (Update 1/Spring update), and later latest Beta Nvidia driver. After that, an strange problem showed up. I recorded a video which represents it (look at the thumbnail 'hiding' under the previewed application ).
I'm using UxStyle and this theme: Windows 8.1 White Titlebar Dark theme by x0lis on deviantART . I tried:
Uninstalling UxStyle and themeInstalling 'normal' Nvidia driverDoing sfc /scannow but it didn't find anything particular (something about prncacla.inf, but I don't think that this causes this problem)Scanning system with antivirus (KIS 2014)Turning off and on option 'Enable preview' in Advanced setting -> PerformanceChanging theme to otherSearching about this in Google and this forum, but I didn't find anything similar but nothing worked.
Well I didn't tried uninstalling Update 1, but I would like to avoid that.
I am having this issue with adding a user or clicking on manage another account and with the guest account having a password. first I cant add anyone not even from the main administrator account that I enable. I running windows 8.1 preview

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?
I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.
I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.

When I try to open up my pictures folder, I can not see any previews of photos and I have to go through an entire folder using the Microsoft Picture viewer to view each and every picture then memorize the photo number in order to attach it to any e-mail or to insert it into my Outlook 2007. Is there an incompatibility issue here ? 2007 vs Windows 8.1 ?? What can I do to rectify the situation ?
Yesterday, my Windows 8.1 preview machine decided it was going to restart every 2 hours unless I install the full 8.1. The problem is that the store install doesn't work; when I click "download", I get a message saying "something happened and the install of 8.1 Preview can't be completed." I also lost my installation disc at some point, assuming that would even work. What should I do?
View 1 Replies View RelatedNever got the chance yet to download windows 8.1 preview but I'm interested to know if it introduced any thing new to the font smoothing technology which is bad looking and not as sharp when compared to e.g. to OS X. I tested the original windows 8 in a virtual machine and I didn't endure how fonts look on it overall whether I'm using the OS itself or using applications like Office 2013.

Can you dual boot with Windows 8.1 Preview and OS X 10.8
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of switching to Windows 8 from OS X on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Its the small things in OS X that brought me to Mac in the first place but now it is getting old. Windows 8 looks fresh so I'm thinking of switching to it. One of these small things thats really useful in OS X is quicklook.
When you are in Finder (like Windows Explorer) if you press the space bar any file that you have highlighted gets previewed. This is much quicker than opening whatever app handles that file and it also gives you some basic useful information about the file like size, type, etc.
If I would just like to see what an mp3 is quickly but dont want to import it into iTunes I can just press the space bar and be done with it in seconds instead of opening iTunes, importing it, creating clutter (if I dont want the file in iTunes at all). Likewise instead of opening a photo app I can just quickly look and browse through pictures.
Does Windows 8 have a similar feature that works fast and is useful?
I just installed a clean install of Windows 8.1 Preview Pro on my laptop (HP DV9000) and I've been coming back and forth to the forum and getting my questions answered by reading all the post about my problems and it worked. I've come across one problem that's frustration to say the least and it's really annoying.
Now that when I reboot my laptop it boots just fine and now the blank black screen comes on with just the cursor present. I've waited and even rebooted a few times and it's still the same.
When Win 8.1 Preview was first released it installed without issue in a second partition on my Win 7 Pro Lenovo Edge E335 and created a standard dual boot setup. A week ago something or other started causing chaos in Win 7 though 8.1 still ran normally, but as 7 is my day-to-day system I needed to get it working normally again. Three different Acronis images restored OK but then each developed the same problems, so probably a rootkit was behind it all. Unable to overcome these problems I restored to factory condition, reinstalled my software and life returned to normal.
I then set about repartitioning to install Win 8.1 Preview again but hit a first problem when the same DVD and key I had used previously failed as the key was not accepted. Undaunted I tried again with a new key I found on the internet and this key did work. However the install then failed with the message that Win 8.1 can not be installed to an MBR disk, only to a GPT disk. Now this is the same disk that installed to the same MBR HDD previously, only the key being different.
Is the only solution to this to convert the entire disk to GPT and reinstall both 7 and 8.1 again? If so, that's a bit of a problem as my Win 7 was preinstalled to an MBR disk and I'm certainly not buying it again.
The Win 8 Pro/Win 7 Ult on the left relates to a different box.
I made the mistake of including family photos in the lock screen choices.
I am trying to remove family pictures from the row at the lock screen preview. I don't want to change a lot of other things along the way if possible. I was hoping I could just right click the 3 family pictures and remove them but they won't go. The piano is the one I see and that is alright but the 3 to the right are the ones I want to clear. Is there a way to do this?
How do I remove the thumbnail preview thing form the windows on the task bar? I'm finding them to be more annoying than useful.
How do I make new windows open at the end of the task bar, rather than beside similar windows?
Windows 8.1 doesn't seem to like my 40GB IDE HDD, it won't seem to install no matter what. Upon selecting & formatting the partitions the setup just keep throwing 0x80070057 "Windows could not format a partition on disk 0" even if I reformat the HDD as per MS support article.
I rebooted into Windows 7 on my primary HDD and reformatted the 40GB HDD and attempted to install Windows 8.1, this time it gave me "Windows deployment engine could not initialize".
I tried something else, installed Windows 7 flawlessly on the 40GB HDD then proceeded to upgrade to Windows 8.1 via setup.exe. Everything went fine until the first reboot when it got stuck and hangs at exactly 77% with the fish and spinning orb. After around 30mins it reboots then asks me to 'Select Keyboard Layout" then requests which OS to select. From there I only have 'Windows Setup' and 'Windows 7'. Whenever I selecting 'Windows Setup' it ends up in black screen with the mouse cursor followed by a loop where it continuously asks me for Keyboard layout.
My Windows 8.1 x64 iso is not damaged (hashes are correct) nor is the 16GB boot USB disk that I used. What could possibly be wrong here? The HDD is a 11 year old Maxtor D540X-4D 5400RPM but it's fully functional (no errors in Windows 7 and correctly detected in my BIOS).
Fully wiping the HDD using GParted doesn't work either.
I have installed the ioWin8 Dev Preview on a HP Mini 210-1000 (twice) and it appears to install without issue but from the Metro UI almost all of the applications cannot be launched. Windows Explorer and Control Panel are the only ones that will launch, though the others do react visibly to being clicked on and they can be manually rearranged using the mouse and dragging.
Is there a Service that needs to be started or a configuration setting I am missing??
