Maintenance :: How To Bypass Microsoft Login In Windows 8.1 Preview
Jul 1, 2013
Apparently, Microsoft has established a new requirement for the 8.1 Preview where one must use a valid Microsoft account login (I could not find an easy way to establish just a local login). With that said, you can create an auto-login process, using your Microsoft account, so you can bypass the requirement to manually type a password. This bypass is only recommended for those who maintain their PC/Laptop in a secure environment:
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup

It's all very easy to do. From the Start screen type "run". Click on Run and type "netplwiz". OK that and highlight your account. Uncheck "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer". Click Apply. Then enter your password twice. Click OK. From the Start screen type "taskbar" and select Taskbar and Navigation. Click the Navigation tab and tick "Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in". You can also tick the "Show the Apps view automatically when I go to Start" if you're not that interested in the Modern UI Start screen.
Restart your PC and when Windows loads it will automatically log you in and take you straight to the desktop. Easy.

I have only one administrative account associated with my Windows 8 PC. I have this said account password protected yet my child can bypass the logon screen by merely resetting the PC. What kind of security is this?
How can I go about setting it up so that a password is require regardless of whether the PC is reset or not?
How are we suppose to go about keeping our children from unmonitored PC access if they can simply reset/shut down the computer and bypass it?

I'm trying to find the official Microsoft licence agreement for Windows 8.1 Preview - any link?
I want to use Windows 8.1 Preview in a VM on a Windows 7 PC.
Normally for the full version of Windows 8, and I guess Windows 8.1 when the full version arrives, you'd need a separate licence for the VM installation. But does this apply to the preview version as well?
I'm trying to find a definitive link on the Microsoft website...

How to skip Microsoft Account login?
1. During installation while configuring the user account it will as for a Microsoft account Login - Enter anything@anything.com and blabla in the respective fields - press enter.
2. It may ask for a Security Code to verify because the account doesn't exist or confirm it is yours.
3. You will be able to "see" Create Local Account. Just click on it and enjoy.

During the night my windows desktop with Windows 8.1 pre-release was update to Windows 8.1 release.
Of course it deleted my Favorites in IE & updated to IE11. It also deleted all my contacts in Mail.
However when I logged into my other desktop using my MS account, it updated IE Favorites & Mail contacts to 0.
I had this info on my portable & put this info on a thumb drive. There is no way to import or export this info into IE11 or Mail.
Is there something I missed on this procedure?
I was under the impression that I had control of my computer & not MS!

I thought 8.1 was supposed to make things easier? Not so for creating a System Image. Now, you have to use the Windows PowerShell (Admin) to get the job done. The image below will show the command string to use (boxed in red) and my target drive is/was Z:

You can use your installation media to access the Repair function and restore your System Image from there.

I need some info re creating restore points. In the HP Support Assistant, under updates and tune-up-change tune-up tasks, should the "set restore point" be turned on to "yes" when a tune-up is scheduled? I understand that windows 8.1 automatically sets restore points, but I don't know how or when or where the restore point info is stored. Is the HP Support Assistant "set restore points" the actual method used by Microsoft or an additional option?

I went from XP to Windows 8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.
With Windows 8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.
I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to.

Microsoft Word keeps minimizing when I am using it. I finally came to realize that its whenever I unconsciously put my mouse to the bottom right hand of the screen or else it drifts there. I know that Windows 8 has this "charms" thing and so I am wondering if it does this because when the mouse goes to the bottom right it is telling it to show me the desktop?

I use a wireless network which utilizes MAC address filtering for security purposes and WEP encryption. I have a MAC address which is white listed on the network and am successfully able to access it by spoofing in my windows XP PC.
However, windows 8 has been giving me headaches since the last week because it simply refuses to alter the mac address to anything with the first octet being '00'.
I am using Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 and TP Link WN7200ND devices. looking for a way in order to alter the MAC in my windows 8 or some way to scan the network with my windows XP PC and find out some other white listed MAC addresses from the router by LINUX or whatever means possible
Can I use airodump -ng on windows somehow (I don't know linux much) to sniff the whitelisted macs?

Boot Direct to Desktop. I found this in a Windows 8 book in the Start Screen Store. If you want to boot directly into the desktop without passing thru the Start Screen
-Go to the start screen & type in schedule to search for Schedule Task in Settings.
-Click on Task Scheduler Library in the left pane, and select Create Task in right pane.
-Name your task something like Boot to desktop.
-Now select the Triggers tab, choose New, and use the drop-down box to select starting the task At log on.
-Click OK and go to the Actions tab, choose New, and enter explorer for the Program/Script value.
-Press OK, save the task, and restart to test it out.

I was perplexed about the slow logon process of Windows 8 considering the fact that it starts from an SSD.I have Fast-Boot disabled. The login windows comes up really quick, but after signing in it seemed annoyingly slow to me, like it was waiting intensionally 30 seconds for some cup of coffee before the desktop shows up.
I've googled a bit and found this, and old WIN7 bug still seems to be valid with Windows 8:The Welcome screen may be displayed for 30 seconds during the logon process after you set a solid color as the desktop background in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
Even though I use a wallpaper background, the workaround with the registry hack solved my slow login times. Now logon is as fast as I expect it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem
create a new DWORD called DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and set its value to 5.
It might take several boot up's to work, but after 4 times it worked for me.

I'm waiting to see if this old hardy perennial will work on the new Windows 8.1 when booting directly to the desktop.
You can currently bypass the Windows welcome screen at boot time quite simply (although on Win 8 it simply takes you immediately to the start screen).
Simply do this to sign in automatically at startup:
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup
Reboot machine -- and you will be taken straight to the start screen.

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.
Here's what happened:
I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.
I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.
Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).
I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:
1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name
So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

I edited the registry at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced and added both a DisablePreviewWindow and DisablePreviewDesktop value and set them to 0x01. Still, the windows appear. UAC is entirely disabled.
