How can I hide the Windows 8 "Start" screen ?.
Presently at boot, 4 steps to get to desktop ...
1. Time and date screen > Left click
2. Login .. more clicking
3. Start screen
4. Desktop jumbo icon > left click
... Desktop at last

Boot Direct to Desktop. I found this in a Windows 8 book in the Start Screen Store. If you want to boot directly into the desktop without passing thru the Start Screen
-Go to the start screen & type in schedule to search for Schedule Task in Settings.
-Click on Task Scheduler Library in the left pane, and select Create Task in right pane.
-Name your task something like Boot to desktop.
-Now select the Triggers tab, choose New, and use the drop-down box to select starting the task At log on.
-Click OK and go to the Actions tab, choose New, and enter explorer for the Program/Script value.
-Press OK, save the task, and restart to test it out.
I'm trying to keep the windows 8 start screen open on one screen and have the other open to the desktop, but any time I click an app on the desktop the 2nd screen with the Windows 8 start screen minimizes. Is there any way to change this behavior?

You can currently bypass the Windows welcome screen at boot time quite simply (although on Win 8 it simply takes you immediately to the start screen).
Simply do this to sign in automatically at startup:
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup
Reboot machine -- and you will be taken straight to the start screen.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
It's all very easy to do. From the Start screen type "run". Click on Run and type "netplwiz". OK that and highlight your account. Uncheck "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer". Click Apply. Then enter your password twice. Click OK. From the Start screen type "taskbar" and select Taskbar and Navigation. Click the Navigation tab and tick "Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in". You can also tick the "Show the Apps view automatically when I go to Start" if you're not that interested in the Modern UI Start screen.
Restart your PC and when Windows loads it will automatically log you in and take you straight to the desktop. Easy.
Is it possible to open the Start Screen (Metro) and / or the charms bar from Icons?
We have lots of servers running Server 2012 and when in a Remote Desktop Window its difficult to try and move the cursor in the 1 pixel corner that brings up the Start Charm...
And Pressing the "Windows" key doesn't get translated so no Win+C ...
So I we could create an icon on the desktop to bring up metro or Charms that would be great!
I am using Win 8.1 on my HP Desktop computer. I have my settings to Open to the Start Screen. However, whenever I open a Windows 8 App (like Mail, People, Games etc.) when I close them it automatically reverts me to the Desktop (Even though I was on the Start Screen when I opened it.) How can I get it to stay on the Start Screen when closing a Win 8 app?

However, I found that firefox only opened in 'desktop' and I couldn't work out how to open it as an app, like I did with internet explorer. Likes to use the Windows 8 Start Screen that has all the tiles on it. Normally, she clicks on the "Mail" icon to get to her email, but now when she clicks on the icon it doesn't go to her email and instead it goes straight to her desktop. I tried clicking another icon; the "weather" one, and it too goes to the desktop. She told me she downloaded a couple games from iWin a few days ago and I noticed a new toolbar in her browser so I tried disabling that, but no change. I've checked what the default browser is, Internet Explorer (what she normally uses). I also tried making Chrome the default browser but still no change.

I deleted the default desktop tile (the one that shows your desktop wallpaper) from the start screen. I've tried Recuva to see if I could still recover the file, and searched the internet and the installation disk. Unfortunately, the file it is nowhere to be found... All I want to do is have an on screen 'windows button' that will take me from the desktop back to the start screen with a click of the mouse, as opposed to having to physically push the keyboard button.
I know this is ultimately lazy, but surely it should be simple and sometimes a mouse click is just so much easier than pushing the button!
This is rather ironic. Most people complain about booting to the new Start page and want to boot the the Desktop. I would rather boot the new Start page but my new Asus Windows 8 computer boots to the start page initially but after about three seconds automatically goes to the desktop.

This is a simple executable shortcut that you can pin to the taskbar or use on the desktop to enter the Start Screen, the only reason I made this is for use with Tihiy's StartIsBack as he enabled the Right Win Key to enter the Modern UI Start Screen instead of the Desktop Start Menu, unfortunately I don't have a Right Windows key so this seemed like a good solution instead of having to use the Charms Bar.

I was messing around with the Win 8.1 preview in a VM tonight and noticed that you can have the Desktop Mode opened half screen along with Modern UI apps on the other half of the screen. I haven't heard about this capability, only 2 Modern UI apps sharing the screen at any one time.

I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?
I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.
Since I installed some "critical" updates from microsoft, there have been some network problems. The main problem that I noticed was that the ethernet appeared as "limited". Then, as I logged in, internet was actually working fine, but that was in desktop mode. Now, as I try to run an app from start screen, it said that there was no internet connection...
So I went to troubleshoot the problem but nothing was found. The other thing I noticed was that, by opening the "Network and Sharing center", there appeared something unusual:
I also booted up to safe mode with network to see if it still persisted, and it still continued limited and while opening the network and sharing center, it still showed that thing on the image.
All this happened just after installing and restarting for the new update, and so, I also tried to restore the system to the point before the update, but it was proven to be unsuccessful, in the end appearing a message saying that it must have not been successful because of the antivirus being enabled at the time (I doubt it), or because of an unknown error.
Is there any way to disable Windows from automatically placing desktop icons on the start screen? Or is there a way to remove multiple icons at one time?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently did a clean install of a full version of Windows 8 on my computer. Some of my Apps on the start screen, ie Weather, News, Maps, Travel, Skydrive and other Apps such as Slacker Radio and Weather Radar Pro will open but give me a "no connection to the internet" message. If I switch over to my Desktop I have an internet connection.
I checked the charm bar/settings/Internet Access and it says "no connections available". The curious thing is the Live Tiles for the News and Travel will update and show the latest information, yet when I open them I get the "no connection available" message. I have no problem with the Store App, Explorer, Email or Music App. Those seem to work fine.
I removed my Anti-virus software, re-installed the Apps and still get the same results. For my internet connection I'm using a Virgin Mobile OverDrivePro2E7 WiFi Hub. I'm not using the Wifi, it is plugged directly into my computer via a USB port. If I go into Control Panel/Network Connections it shows up as EtherNet2 with a strong connection.
Under 8.0 Pro, as I added traditional desktop applications (i.e., Office 2013), the install would create both shortcuts in the traditional program menu as well as Tiles on the Metro start screen. After upgrading (in-place) to 8.1 Pro, all of the traditional applications and their shortcuts in the traditional program menu were still there, but the Tiles on the Metro start screen were gone.
How can I recreate Metro Tiles for my traditional desktop applications?
I would like to run all my programs directly from the start screen, not switching to desktop view. My friend has Windows 8 and he is running everything directly from start screen mode. I have Win 8.1 and I don't want to go to the desktop mode since then programs run under desktop and loose the functions available in start screen mode.
