I'm trying to keep the windows 8 start screen open on one screen and have the other open to the desktop, but any time I click an app on the desktop the 2nd screen with the Windows 8 start screen minimizes. Is there any way to change this behavior?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just had to reformat my hard drive and when I did I went ahead and updated to windows 8.1. I have everything set back up the way I like but I can't get the start menu to always open on my secondary monitor. I can set it to open on whatever monitor I'm currently using, but I only want it to open on the one specific monitor that ISN'T my main display.
I've tried using windows key + shift + arrows and that moves the start menu to the right monitor, but only that time. When I reopen it, it just pops up on my main display.
I've tried clicking on the bottom left of the second monitor and opening the start menu, but when I hit the windows key again it opens it on the main monitor.
I'm running Win 8 with two monitors, and am having the issue where the Start Screen will disappear once I click anywhere on my desktop on the other monitor. my eyes completely removes the purpose of running Windows 8 on a multi-monitor setup.
Basically I want the Start Screen to always be up on my second screen, and always have the classic desktop up on the primary screen.
I'm using start8 and dual monitor setup in extended mode. Is there a way to keep the metro start menu up on 2nd monitor while have a browser or another program open on the 1st monitor.

However, whenever I open a Windows 8 App (like Mail, People, Games etc.) when I close them it automatically reverts me to the Desktop (Even though I was on the Start Screen when I opened it.) However, I found that firefox only opened in 'desktop' and I couldn't work out how to open it as an app, like I did with internet explorer. I uninstalled firefox and repinned explorer to start screen and toolbar and reset it as default only to find it too wouldn't open on start screen now, coming up with the message shown by the image. . I know it's not a problem with the internet because if I wrench it onto the desktop it works perfectly. Why won't the internet work on the startscreen? How can I fix it?

We have lots of servers running Server 2012 and when in a Remote Desktop Window its difficult to try and move the cursor in the 1 pixel corner that brings up the Start Charm...
And Pressing the "Windows" key doesn't get translated so no Win+C ...
So I we could create an icon on the desktop to bring up metro or Charms that would be great!
From the start screen I can only open desktop and Microsoft software. When I click on other app tiles the screen shows the app logo as if it is opening but it doesn't open and goes back to the start screen.

Normally, she clicks on the "Mail" icon to get to her email, but now when she clicks on the icon it doesn't go to her email and instead it goes straight to her desktop. I tried clicking another icon; the "weather" one, and it too goes to the desktop. She told me she downloaded a couple games from iWin a few days ago and I noticed a new toolbar in her browser so I tried disabling that, but no change. I've checked what the default browser is, Internet Explorer (what she normally uses). I also tried making Chrome the default browser but still no change.

Is there a way to make Windows 8 remember what screen you closed a program on and open it in that window? Right now, I have most of the stuff I open pinned to the task bar. How it opens now is what ever monitor I click on the program in, it opens it in that monitor. I understand the logic on that, but I was wondering if there was a way to make programs always open on a specific monitor. I.e. I always have outlook on my monitor clear to the left, visual studio in the middle, and my browser on the right. Is there a way to force those programs to always open on that monitor, regardless of which task bar I click on?

I recently upgraded from to Photoshop CC after seeing a YouTube Video with someone working on the same Wacom Cintiq 24HD Touch I have using the newly introduced Experimental Touch features of PS CC.
Turns out it didn't worked THAT well on mine.
Panning, Zooming and Rotation in PS CC is totally screwed like the axis of them being totally off or outside my Screen and thus causing my Workspace to vanish off screen which is REALLY annoying.
Working with the Issue for a while I noticed that the issue could be related to me using multiple Monitors unlike the Video which only used one and the Cintiq with the Touch Interface NOT being either the center or rather the Main Monitor of the Setup.
Having the Cintiq not as the Main Monitor causes Photoshop CC to relocate the Rotational, Zoom and Move Axis to the Main Monitor and thus cause this agonizing behavior.With the Cintiq now set as the Main Monitor every Metro App I use ( including the Start Screen ) opens out of my normal Field of View.Is there a setting that allows me to keep the Cintiq ( 2 ) to be the Main Monitor because of Photoshop while having Metro Apps open by default on the Center Monitor ( 1 ) ?
I do know that hitting the Windows button in the Task bar will open the Start Screen on the screen it was hit and all Metro Apps opened from there will also open on the now active screen but working like this is kind of cumbersome as I prefer to use a Mouse button ( or the Keyboard Windows Key ) with the Windows Key assigned and there it just doesn't work like I want.
I started using a second monitor recently, and ran into an issue when opening a folder. When I try to open any folder both screens will flash grey and then go back to normal, but the folder won't open. If I try again then the folder will open with no grey flash. If I switch back to just one screen, the same thing will happen, along with all of my icons being rearranged.

Seems like on my 1st monitor, whenever I open chrome or IE, it closes the start/metro on monitor 2, and opens it there.
One of the biggest complaints about the Windows 8 start menu/screen, is the fact that it takes up the whole screen, unnecessarily blocking everything a desktop user is currently working on.
I've been playing around with Windows 8.1 Preview, and am getting used to snapping the start screen to the left side, like you can with metro apps, using Win+Arrow.
Because Windows 8 treats the Desktop like an app, it can be displayed on the right half of the screen, while the start menu is snapped to the left half of the screen.
So I'm just wondering whether there's a way to force the start screen to always open at half the fullscreen size? In other words, always snapped to the size.
This would be a great way to meet the fullscreen-start-menu-haters half-way.
I am running Start8 on my ASUS Q2OOe Laptop and even though I have Start8 set to open to the desktop on boot it doesn't always do that. About 1 time in 5 cold starts it remains at the start screen and I have to click on the desktop tile to get there. If I reboot from 'Restart' it seldom happens.

I am running Windows 8 Pro, with two USB external drives attached. One drive is "dormant", and the other is used for file backups. I have noticed that when the computer exits from sleep mode, either one or both external USB drive folders will open on the desktop. I can only guess this signifies that these drives may have been accessed while the computer was in sleep mode.
View 6 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows 8 Pro x64 as a Domain User with full Admin privileges, I am unable to use File History. I cannot open/start the File History tool. When I attempt to click on it from the Control Panel, nothing happens. When I try running it from the Metro search tool, it switches to the desktop and nothing loads. I've also tried in the Action Center, under Maintenance, "File History is Off. Turn On." Clicking "Turn On" does nothing.
All other items under the Control Panel that I have tried open and work with no problems.
I also tried in a "clean boot". System file checker reported no errors.
I just noticed in Control Panel there is "Windows 7 File Recovery". If I launch that and try to set up a Windows 7-style backup, it seems to work. I suppose I could just use this older tool instead of the new File History, although I haven't researched the differences.
I have another machine with the same version of Windows 8, and I am able to launch File History with no problems. I click File History from control panel and am taken to another screen that allows me to enable it. No such screen on the problem machine. The only main difference is the working machine is a regular user account; whereas, the non working machine is a domain account
I'm in the middle of a struggle with blank screen issue, possibly corrupted exlorer.exe file (won't run). Wanted to try update from 8-8.1 but the Windows Store won't show up with the blank screen issue. Any thoughts on resolutions? I've done several malware, adware scans and antivirus scans. Everything comes back clear. Also, tried adding a new user acct, but get an error message and can't add. Thought the update might replace the needed files. SFC scan return non-fixable errors.
