My friend's Win 8 desktop refuses to open desktop applications maximized. I've done all the usual tricks that used to work, like maximizing them and cntrl-clicking or alt-clicking to shut them down, but they always reopen in a less than maximized state. I am referring to Internet Explorer, Outlook, Word, etc.
View 2 RepliesI wonder if there is a way to set a default in Windows 8 so every window (including web pages) will automatically open maximized? Someone told me that a website/window will open in whatever state you exited it, but that doesn't seem to be working for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMaybe it's just me that this annoys but i hope there is a setting that can be changed to fix it. In Windows 8/8.1 if you try to open an app that is already open it does nothing.
Example:
1. Click start >> Type MSTSC >> Press Enter and connect to a remote computer/server.
2. Do the same again (not on the remote computer/server) >> you will notice after hitting Enter that it doesn't open the Remote Desktop dialogue.
It will either go back to the desktop or open the original remote connection. It is the same with any application (Excel, Word...)
It didn't work that way in 7, it would open a new instance of that application is there any way to change this?
i have a problem with my windows 8 . all my apps on my start screen cant open.. Its say that This apps can't open check window store for more information and gt a little X at the top right of the all apps..

Every time I click on the Store tile it doesn't get past the green introductory screen before just disappearing (crashing).. Have restarted several times and used the link-through on the Windows 8.1 site. Also, I have since discovered that all apps won't open either (such as news and sports).

Listed in alphabetical order it's how I can pull or access anything I may want @ any given moment w/out leaving Desktop to look for something. I simply scroll up & down for the desired item & it saves changing screens to go get something. A few, like Weather, Calendar, News I'll usually keep sitting on the APP Bar @ the top-left of the Desktop.

I have even created Metro tiles for applications I normally run as they load and run much faster than launching them from the desktop. ... without closing/minimize the metro app? When I'm working with Photoshop I always have my email open because of the meeting notes. The problem I'm having now is that everytime I focus back on Photoshop, the mail app closes/minimizes by itself. The same thing goes with Skype
I know that you can open that tiny multitasking window on the side, but it's just not efficient. Is there a way to remedy this?
Since updating to 8.1 my apps don't open in start screen.. I click on the app..the screen goes directly to the desktop and the blank app screen sits in the desktop tool bar. I can't open any of the programs. I have a Gateway ZX6980 ..

I would like to use the built in side by side app feature but for programs running in the desktop so I can have something like notepad++ or visual studio open on the left side of the screen and have a steam or twitch chat open on the right so I can free up my second monitor for full screen viewing of videos/games/websites. I know I can do this by resizing the windows manually but it is very clunky and harder to manage when I want to close a program or open new applications.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOut of the blue today when I opened PSE 11 and then tried to use it to open a file on my Desktop, it went to sleep. Task Manager showed it "not-responding". Rebooting the computer did not work. After a couple of tries, I waited for 2-3 minutes and it then displayed files on the desktop. I switched the location it was searching, which was Desktop to my photo folder, and everything started working normally. Closed and restarted, and it was fine opening files from my Pictures folder. But, when I switched it to Desktop it went to sleep again for 2-3 minutes. At one point it got a message, which I forget exactly, but basically saying it could not find the file it was searching for??
It seems unique to the Desktop location. The Desktop is part of the operating system (Windows 8.1), and on a SSD. The Pictures folder is on my HDDs. I don't recall making any changes to the setup.
Summary of the symptoms:
1. Only is slow with File, Open, or File, Open As, when the location is the Desktop
2. Operating system (8.1) is on a SSD. Normal file folder is on HDD.
3. Same actions when location is Pictures on HDD is normal.
4. Process Explorer does not seem to detect any activity going on during the "sleeping" mode
I am running Windows 8 Pro, with two USB external drives attached. One drive is "dormant", and the other is used for file backups. I have noticed that when the computer exits from sleep mode, either one or both external USB drive folders will open on the desktop. I can only guess this signifies that these drives may have been accessed while the computer was in sleep mode.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAside from deleting the tile from the start screen and not moving your mouse to the bottom left corner to show it, is there any way to uninstall the desktop completely so that when Windows Defender is opened up, there is nothing underneath it? I thought the point of Windows 8 was to have a pure tile experience without desktop exposure. I did try adding Defender as a tile to the start screen but it still opened up within the desktop.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI built a new computer, and now have both a SSD and HDD setup. My intention was to have the SSD be only for Windows and use the HDD for everything else. I feel like that everything I download is going to the SDD and I am not getting any prompts for where to install applications.
For example, I just installed Office and was planning to install it on the HDD. I checked the SSD, and sure enough, there is a folder for Office. On a related note, the install setup everything for Office including OneDrive for Business. I don't need OneDrive for Business. Should there have been a prompt to select what Office applications I wanted to install?
I don't seem to be able to drag and drop anymore in more than one application, so it should be Windows, not the applications.
I did restart the laptop, but it didn't work.
I upgraded to Windows 8 about a month ago, and quite frankly I have never had so many problems on my previous operating systems (95, 98, 98SE, 2000NT, XP Home, XP Professional) as I have on this.
I have had to completely reinstall Windows 8 three times now due to things going wrong, such as;
1. 'Change PC Settings' became inoperative after a few days, nothing happens when I click on it.
2. The 'Desktop' Tile all of a sudden disappeared from the main start-up apps.
3. Some of my Desktop Shortcut Icons have turned blank just showing just a 'White Paper' Icon.
4. Some programs when I launch, say the I don't have Administration Rights to access the program, when I do have admin rights.
I notice looking through the posts in the forum that these problems come up very often, I have tried to fix them following other users advice but no joy.
I have the latest drivers, this includes my Graphics Display driver which is the latest version.
So whats going on with Windows 8, its the worst version of windows I've came across, when are the techies going to do something about these common problems, as I'm defiant to reinstall it all again which takes me all day due to the amount of software I have to reinstall.
sometimes when I type keys on the keyboard applications seem to appear. This happens quite a lot, I keep clicking control button and it eventually gets back to normal.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed Windows 8.1 64 bit on a new motherboard using a Logitech K120 keyboard. After using the system for a few weeks I have decide to put on a better keyboard. After swapping keyboards the system runs fine until I reboot. At that time Windows starts up as if it has never run before giving the "Hi" and "Adding applications" messages and then going to the normal tiles screen but it can find no applications. Rebooting give the same results. If I change the keyboard back and reboot, everything comes up fine.
I have tried 3 different keyboards, 2 different Microsoft and 1 Dell, with the same results. As far as I can tell, Windows 8 only works with the keyboard that was used to install it and can never be changed.
The only software running was Start8 to actually make Windows 8 useful but I removed that and confirm that the problem still existed without it.
