Jan 13, 2014Ive noticed since I installed windows 8.1 none of my apps have been working I figured this is because I left the installer running over night and my laptop might of turned off before finishing the installation so it might be corrupt didnt think much of it at the time since I never really used the apps but now I want to system restore my laptop and the PC settings app wont open like the rest of my apps I click on the tile and it opens for 1-2 seconds then takes me back to the home screen. :C

Jul 31, 2014I just built a secondary new work computer. Unlike my main rig which I just do a fresh install of 8.1. On this one I put Win 7 then Win 8 pro upgrade, once that's done I upgrade to 8.1 through store. thing is once I upgrade to 8.1 I notice pc settings and store wont open, if I click on them they flash and just return to desktop.

But it only seems to work on admin account.
I noticed same thing is happening with regular user account and the above fix does not work, in fact when I try and set permissions to system in registry step it mentions I get "Unable to set new owner on packages, access is denied"

Feb 3, 2014Reinstalled windows 2 times and then made a back up image, which I have to keep reverting to because my PC Settings and Windows apps (which I don't even use) will stop opening and display the "This app can't open please refresh" pop up. This is for windows 8.1, I'm assuming that's cool on this site?

Jun 5, 2014My PC is crashing daily, my guess is about every hour it's turned on at least.
So I've tried to install glary utilities, restarting my PC in safe mode, yet... I can't open up PC settings. The reason is that I need to reboot my PC completely, everyting else haven't solved the problem at all, but it's hard to reboot when you can't open PC settings.
So, any step-by-step guide to open PC settings and access my reboot menu.

Aug 17, 2014 The PC boots up and I can log in ok but I am unable to open any browsers, use the start bar or actually get in to most programs, use the search function or get in to any settings as it just hangs.
I can get to the start menu through charms and I can access My Pc from there but opening control panel hangs as well. I am also unable to get to the troubleshooting and repair.
I have tried to restart and press and hold the shift key but it just hangs again when restarting, also tried to log out of my profile but that also hangs.
I have tried to boot from a USB with a windows 8 ISO to get in to the repair from there but that doesn't seem to work - Also the windows product key shows as 'not available' ?how to actually do anything with my now expensive paperweight that has a pretty but non-functioning desktop screen ?
Not Able To Open Store And PC Settings - HP Sleekbook
Dec 9, 2012Yesterday my HP sleekbook arrived (cheaper amd version) with windows 8. Everything works fine except that I can't open the store or pc settings. When I click on the store tile, or click on the more settings button, the fullscreen (green for store, blue for settings) icon fills the screen en then dissapears.
I have tried the sfc / scannow option but this did not work after 3 trials. Reset or Refresh also isn't an option because I can't enter the settings and thus won't be able to perform these actions.

I tried using Microsoft's Fix-it stuff and said I have missing files and dll.I don't want to refresh or reset my PC , but if I have no choice, I will have to do so. And also I tried to sfc /scannow and this is the result.

Feb 11, 2013Here is what happened to me in the past couple of days. I was using the latest beta drivers for my GTX 560 and apparently Windows 8 downloaded and installed either a previous driver or a corrupt driver and automatically installed it. So the next day I do my typical daily reboot and I get nothing but a black screen with no response at the part where I sign in.
So after researching on my phone, I kind of came to the conclusion that I described above. I downloaded Windows 8 today (since I did a digital upgrade from Windows 7) just to put it on a flash drive so I can refresh my PC. After refreshing my PC, I was glad to see the lock screen, sign-in screen, etc.
I have tried SFC /scannow, messing around with boot up services, and running apps.diagcab. Nothing is working! NVIDIA update components refuses to install as well and I'm sure other things aren't working properly.
Windows 8.1 - Settings To Open To Start Screen?
May 1, 2014I am using Win 8.1 on my HP Desktop computer. I have my settings to Open to the Start Screen. However, whenever I open a Windows 8 App (like Mail, People, Games etc.) when I close them it automatically reverts me to the Desktop (Even though I was on the Start Screen when I opened it.) How can I get it to stay on the Start Screen when closing a Win 8 app?

Sep 15, 2014When I want to open a JPEG, 55-60% of the time I want to open it with IrFanView. Just about all of the rest of the time I want to open it with Photoshop. When I click on a JPEG file, it opens in IrFanView. So far, so good.
When I right-click on a JPEG file, the fifth choice is "Open with EditPad", which is a text editor. Of course, I never want to open a JPEG with a text editor.
Farther down there is the "Open with", with the triangle that gives several choices, including Photoshop. But that takes one extra step each time. Is there a way to change the "open with EditPad" to "Open with Photoshop", and leave the clicking on the file to open with IrFanView?

It makes it very difficult to type ie in e mail, the only way to get focus is to left click the mouse within the app and the cursor comes back for a few letters then the cursor disapears again. Oct 24, 2013I have put irfanview as my default image viewers of all types all over the system.
However, when I am using irfanview on a particular image, I want some other app to open the other images that I am trying to open. For that I have installed FastStone Image Viewer, so I want FSView.exe to appear in my RightClick - Open With defaults so that I can select it.
However I try, windows 8 is always showing

Paint
Photos
Windows Photo Viewer
in that open with setting.
I have selected Faststone viewer a dozen time through disk, but it doesn't stick to the right click menu. Those names are always coming.
I don't want even to see 1. Microsoft Office 2010, 2. Photos, 3. Windows Photo Viewer in that list, I just don't want to use these three programs to ever open any of my images.
So I want, 1. irfanview, 2. paint, 3. Faststone viewer to appear in my rightclick openwith list.
How do I do it. I have tried control panel - Default programs. I have downloaded and run Default Programs Editor.exe mentioned elsewhere in this forum, but they don't give any option to "delete" there options of rightclick menu that keep on appearing.

Jun 7, 2013I can't seem to open any off my apps from the start menu. When I open an app, the app closes back but is available at the sidewindow(?). It doesn't load or anything. When I click it, the app sort of minimizes to the sidewindow(?).
So I've been lurking around and one of the problems that I thought was happening to me is that I do not have the temporary internet files. C -> Users -> My Name -> AppData -> Local. I read that it should have a windows folder in the local folder and a temporary internet files in the windows folder.
I changed my local user to the microsoft account and then changed back to the local user using another username so that might affect these change in my pc.

Dec 13, 2013Maybe it's just me that this annoys but i hope there is a setting that can be changed to fix it. In Windows 8/8.1 if you try to open an app that is already open it does nothing.
Example:
1. Click start >> Type MSTSC >> Press Enter and connect to a remote computer/server.
2. Do the same again (not on the remote computer/server) >> you will notice after hitting Enter that it doesn't open the Remote Desktop dialogue.
It will either go back to the desktop or open the original remote connection. It is the same with any application (Excel, Word...)
It didn't work that way in 7, it would open a new instance of that application is there any way to change this?

Mar 13, 2014I've got a problem of mass scale. My Windows 8.1 Store refuses to load. Whatever I do, it doesn't start up. I had to get to an app with compatibility problems and get to the store in that way, but also that doesn't work anymore.
Other than the one putting a big line in the cmd (one of the first & only real solution I could find).
