Oct 24, 2013installing apps on my laptop running window 8.1. I select install the app I want. The store downloads it and "installs" it. The files are hidden in the program files however in the start menu the app icon is just a box. When i click on it, it says that there is a problem and it cannot be opened. the store would repair the install. I have tried that but no luck. No apps seems to be working that I download and i cant delete them because there is no such option in the start menu. And then manually deleting the files is also impossible because windows blocks it even when i have admin rights.

Jul 17, 2014Not sure why, have never experienced this in previous versions of Windows,but I can't seem to get pdf files to open in Firefox.
Using the latest version of firefox, video drivers, and adobe reader.
Got adobe reader installed fine, and adobe flash player installed fine,but still pdf files won't open in firefox.
when I click on a pdf file to open it in the browser, it doesn't do anything,its like the link to the pdf won't open at all. Happens every time.
Only way I can open pdf's on the web is to right click on the pdf link,click on 'save link as' download it to the computer, and open it in adobe reader.
I can do that, problem is this is my wifes computer, and she's not as computer literate as I am, so she has to ask ME to do all that for her whenever she comes across a PDF document on the web, which happens alot with her taking online classes right now. don't want her to have to call me every time she needs to open a pdf document ya know? especially when its something small like a groupon or something she only needs to view once to print the thing...

Dec 22, 2013On my old Win 7 and Win Vista and Win XP laptops I've had no problems opening and viewing my old MPEG-2 video files. My new laptop running Win 8.1 will not allow me to view them.
Windows Media Player will only recognize them as audio files - not video - though the sound will play. Real Player is the same - the application will open and begin playing a file but only as audio file. I've tried the built in Toshiba media player and it shows errors and won't open the files at all.
Again - these are conforming MPEG-2 NTSC 760X480 video file (old analog home movies) captured using an ATI video card dongle to connect to my video source and an old version of capture application ULead Video Studio. These files conform in every way to MPEG-2 standard/format and will run on all of our PC EXCEPT the new one running Win 8.
I bought and loaded a video editing application from Corel and it will open and play these files perfectly so why won't Win Media Player and Real Player recognize them when running behind Windows 8?

Apr 15, 2014Out of the blue today when I opened PSE 11 and then tried to use it to open a file on my Desktop, it went to sleep. Task Manager showed it "not-responding". Rebooting the computer did not work. After a couple of tries, I waited for 2-3 minutes and it then displayed files on the desktop. I switched the location it was searching, which was Desktop to my photo folder, and everything started working normally. Closed and restarted, and it was fine opening files from my Pictures folder. But, when I switched it to Desktop it went to sleep again for 2-3 minutes. At one point it got a message, which I forget exactly, but basically saying it could not find the file it was searching for??
It seems unique to the Desktop location. The Desktop is part of the operating system (Windows 8.1), and on a SSD. The Pictures folder is on my HDDs. I don't recall making any changes to the setup.
Summary of the symptoms:
1. Only is slow with File, Open, or File, Open As, when the location is the Desktop
2. Operating system (8.1) is on a SSD. Normal file folder is on HDD.
3. Same actions when location is Pictures on HDD is normal.
4. Process Explorer does not seem to detect any activity going on during the "sleeping" mode

Nov 7, 2012I just bought a new windows 8 installed latpop. I used internet explorer to download firefox and proceeded to install flash, office trial java flash has been crashing all week in firefox.
I then installed skip metro suite settings to disable charm and uninstalled flash BUT now when i try to download software.
I've tried flash, spotify and fb skype function thus far nothing happens when i click on it, even in the containing folder the wait icon swirls for a bit then no action. I've tried restarting and ending processes through task bar clicking on the run as administrator button which takes me to the usual warning do you want this program to make changes.
But when i press ok, still nothing happens! I've also tried using internet explorer as the initial place of download.

Windows apparently doesn't let you do it in case you accidentally open too many files, but I'd like to.
I found this solution for Windows 7:
Context menus are shortened when more than 15 files are selected
But Windows 8 doesn't appear to have that registry key, so I don't know if it's called something else maybe.

Oct 21, 2013In w 8.1 If I open an app within seconds it loses focus. It makes it very difficult to type ie in e mail, the only way to get focus is to left click the mouse within the app and the cursor comes back for a few letters then the cursor disapears again. So any time I make an app active it becomes inactive quickly. To make it active again I have to click on it with my mouse.

Oct 24, 2013I have put irfanview as my default image viewers of all types all over the system.
However, when I am using irfanview on a particular image, I want some other app to open the other images that I am trying to open. For that I have installed FastStone Image Viewer, so I want FSView.exe to appear in my RightClick - Open With defaults so that I can select it.
However I try, windows 8 is always showing
Irfanview
Microsoft Office 2010
Paint
Photos
Windows Photo Viewer
in that open with setting.
I have selected Faststone viewer a dozen time through disk, but it doesn't stick to the right click menu. Those names are always coming.
I don't want even to see 1. Microsoft Office 2010, 2. Photos, 3. Windows Photo Viewer in that list, I just don't want to use these three programs to ever open any of my images.
So I want, 1. irfanview, 2. paint, 3. Faststone viewer to appear in my rightclick openwith list.
How do I do it. I have tried control panel - Default programs. I have downloaded and run Default Programs Editor.exe mentioned elsewhere in this forum, but they don't give any option to "delete" there options of rightclick menu that keep on appearing.

Jul 27, 2014I am really annoyed by one error I keep getting. I was just about to develop a website from the scratch so just wanted to have everything setup before starting. So, I installed apache server on my system. Now the issue is, I am not able to update config 'httpd' file as it shows "Access is denied" error. When I try opening the txt file using "Run as Administrator" an error pops out - "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action .....". I have tried many things but I am not able to fix this. In what time period I would have significantly created my site, I am just trying to fix this thing.

Jun 7, 2013I can't seem to open any off my apps from the start menu. When I open an app, the app closes back but is available at the sidewindow(?). It doesn't load or anything. When I click it, the app sort of minimizes to the sidewindow(?).
So I've been lurking around and one of the problems that I thought was happening to me is that I do not have the temporary internet files. C -> Users -> My Name -> AppData -> Local. I read that it should have a windows folder in the local folder and a temporary internet files in the windows folder.
I changed my local user to the microsoft account and then changed back to the local user using another username so that might affect these change in my pc.
