Is it possible to open .dmp files by double clicking on them? I've associated them with WinDbg.exe but they don't open - I get the error below. I can only open them with ctrl + D. Is it possible?
I am trying to debug some crash dumps which all point to NTOSKRNL.EXE but I am unable to debug or even analyze it because the WinDBG throws me an error :-
Code: ************* Symbol Path validation summary **************Response Time (ms) LocationOK C:symbols Symbol search path is: C:symbols Executable search path is: C:symbols Unable to load image SystemRootsystem32 toskrnl.exe, Win32 error 0n2*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for ntoskrnl.exe*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for ntoskrnl.exe
[code].....
Now, I am unable to understand what is the reason behind this even after much browsing. Also, the symbols are downloaded and saved in C:/Symbols. I am sure that these are working because some DUMP files which do not point to NTOSKRNL get debugged fine.
Also, one more issue I am facing that whenever I have to open another crash dump file immediately after closing one, the option for opening the Crash Dump gets greyed out -_-' . The only way to open another DUMP file is via closing and opening workspace and everything again?
I am using an ASUS K55N laptop, equipped with an AMD A8-4500M APU, 4GB single-channel RAM, and of course, Windows 8 standard x64.
Occasionally, anywhere from an hour to three days after a boot-up, the computer will hang while in sleep mode (screen will be off but indicator lights will remain on for about 5 minutes in sleep mode) and shut off. Upon restarting, I'll be greeted by a "Your PC ran into a problem and had to restart" Windows prompt. Of course, a minidump will also be produced. However, there is no BSOD anywhere to be found.
Upon looking into these dump files with WinDbg, all of them point toward my Atheros AR9485 wireless card's driver; either athw8x.sys or athrx.sys depending on the driver I was using at the time. I have tried several Atheros drivers, to no avail. I have tried using new drivers, old drivers, Windows 7 drivers, you name it. At this moment, I am using a Windows 7 driver. Yet, it has not solved the issue.
Verifier is disabled, although I believe my issue can be attributed to debugging. I have literally tried everything and it persists.

I am really annoyed by one error I keep getting. I was just about to develop a website from the scratch so just wanted to have everything setup before starting. So, I installed apache server on my system. Now the issue is, I am not able to update config 'httpd' file as it shows "Access is denied" error. When I try opening the txt file using "Run as Administrator" an error pops out - "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action .....". I have tried many things but I am not able to fix this. In what time period I would have significantly created my site, I am just trying to fix this thing.
I have to open a lot of text-based files on my computer each day to change settings and such (for example the hosts file or the http.conf file, etc.) In order for this to work I need to press win-key, find Notepad, right-click, select run as administrator, then open file, browse to the file location and finally open the file. is a faster way (preferably via right-clicking the files) to open/edit a text-based file as admin?
I cannot open photos which I transferred from my old PC as MDI files. I have downloaded an MDI viewer but it is only free for 7 days and cannot get it to print in the right format. I have downloaded an MDI converter which gets the photos on the screen ready to print but won't print unless I pay for a license.
I can't open .EXE files in Windows 8.1 Pro without renaming the file to .exe
The exe file downloads as _exe and not as .exe
I thought I had malware so did a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro to 8 Pro and updated back to win 8.1 Pro ...
Simply stated I can open an exe file only if I rename it from _exe to .exe
It is more of a minor nuisance to rename every exe file.... I have searched this website prior to posting and have Googled but only the file name change seems to allow me to open a .exe file ....
I just got a windows 8.1 laptop, everything works fine except when I try to open files. It takes me more than a minute to load this PC, downloads, or any other folders. I don't really know what to do.
When ever I try to open a file, I receive the error I have attached. If I view download, right click the file I am trying to open and open it with reader, than it opens correctly. How can I get the file to open correctly without doing the work around?

On my old desktop the files can be opened in Word for editing with no problem but on the newer laptop my files will not open in Word for editing, only in Word Online. Editing this way messes up the formatting.

Fresh out of box windows8 Sony Vaio Laptop showing error message when I try to open any picture files either web contents or local picture, saying "Not Implemented" error message. And no right click option available.
Windows Media Player won't open. I noticed this after I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall AVG 2012 so I could install AVG 2013. There was a huge amount of things to be uninstalled and I selected and deleted all of them. Since then I've had a similar message open with Windows Live Mail also, but I went to Programs and Features and did the right click for 'uninstall' on Windows Live Essentials 2012 and then chose "Repair". This seems to have worked.
The message that appears when I try to play an mp3 file by right clicking on it and then choosing "Play with Windows Media Player" (because the program won't open at all) has Windows Installer as a heading and says: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Shredder64.msi' in the box below."
I don't know what a program or feature titled "Shredder" has to do with Windows Media Player, but that is what it says. When I click on the 'Cancel' button inside this message box another box opens with the same heading (Windows Installer) and the message says: "The path 'C:UsersAdministratorAppDataLocalDownloaded Installations{45DE3BB5-15C7-489B-8F80-82349413953E}Shredder64.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'Shreder64.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product Shredder." Then there is just the OK button.
I have tried to open WMP from the taskbar, the Program Files (x86) file, the windows explorer (File Explorer) to the "Start Menu"/"Programs" file, and also from the Start Screen and the Start Screen All Apps page. It just won't open.
Is there a way to reinstall it without a windows refresh? Or is there a fix?
I thought I had my sharing files figured out,but now I updated to windows 8.1 and cannot open the files I have marked "share with" on my windows 7 computer. I keep getting the box that tells me I don't have permission. I have read/write checked. How do I open them in windows 8.1. One computer has windows 7 the trouble one has windows 8.1.
Computer is: Gateway SX2185-UB37 AMD E1 2500 APU Radon HD 8240 500 GB HD 8 GB DDR3 RAM (had 4 but I put another 4 G stick in there due to windows 8 being soo slow)
Anyway, our problem right now is with PDF documents, she can download & view PDF's if she downloads them, but she's not a computer guru like me and just wants to view them in firefox when she clicks on them inside the browser window, but for some reason PDF's won't load in firefox, and we're not sure why.
Does that functionality require Java or flash or something? otherwise we're not sure what could be causing it. sure we're missing something though. Why PDF's aren't loading in firefox in Windows 8.1?
I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.
The specific error messages are:
- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL." - ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."
This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?
I have a windows 8.1 64 bit PC with a program called 1stPage.exe installed.
When I right click a .txt file I get 'Edit with 1st Page' in the context menu and it also shows in the open with menu.
However HTML files do not show these options. I have checked the registry and it would appear that the program is set up on the open with menu exactly the same for both file types.
So it would appear that something is blocking 1stPage from showing against HTML files but I can't figure out what I need to change.
I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.
installing apps on my laptop running window 8.1. I select install the app I want. The store downloads it and "installs" it. The files are hidden in the program files however in the start menu the app icon is just a box. When i click on it, it says that there is a problem and it cannot be opened. the store would repair the install. I have tried that but no luck. No apps seems to be working that I download and i cant delete them because there is no such option in the start menu. And then manually deleting the files is also impossible because windows blocks it even when i have admin rights.
My old vista laptop died so I upgraded to a new laptop pre-loaded with 8.1. I tried to load some files including photos from my Seagate hard drive but I get a message to the effect that they are not supported. How can I download the other files?
Not sure why, have never experienced this in previous versions of Windows, but I can't seem to get pdf files to open in Firefox.
Using the latest version of firefox, video drivers, and adobe reader.
Got adobe reader installed fine, and adobe flash player installed fine, but still pdf files won't open in firefox.
when I click on a pdf file to open it in the browser, it doesn't do anything, its like the link to the pdf won't open at all. Happens every time.
Only way I can open pdf's on the web is to right click on the pdf link, click on 'save link as' download it to the computer, and open it in adobe reader.
I can do that, problem is this is my wifes computer, and she's not as computer literate as I am, so she has to ask ME to do all that for her whenever she comes across a PDF document on the web, which happens alot with her taking online classes right now. don't want her to have to call me every time she needs to open a pdf document ya know? especially when its something small like a groupon or something she only needs to view once to print the thing...
The thing is, i open java files with Eclipse by default. Today i wanted to take some notes about Java the programming language which include text and code. I used Notepad++, and with it you can save the file as a wide variety of types, among them java file. I chose this, but since they are associated with eclipse, it makes opening them with Notepad++ tedious. I want to ask if there is a way to set the default program for some java files Notepad++ and leave Eclipse for the rest? This would be a useful feature for few other types too.
