Debugging :: PC Crashes In Sleep Mode - WinDbg Points To Wireless Card?

Jan 5, 2014

I am using an ASUS K55N laptop, equipped with an AMD A8-4500M APU, 4GB single-channel RAM, and of course, Windows 8 standard x64.

Occasionally, anywhere from an hour to three days after a boot-up, the computer will hang while in sleep mode (screen will be off but indicator lights will remain on for about 5 minutes in sleep mode) and shut off. Upon restarting, I'll be greeted by a "Your PC ran into a problem and had to restart" Windows prompt. Of course, a minidump will also be produced. However, there is no BSOD anywhere to be found.

Upon looking into these dump files with WinDbg, all of them point toward my Atheros AR9485 wireless card's driver; either athw8x.sys or athrx.sys depending on the driver I was using at the time. I have tried several Atheros drivers, to no avail. I have tried using new drivers, old drivers, Windows 7 drivers, you name it. At this moment, I am using a Windows 7 driver. Yet, it has not solved the issue.

Verifier is disabled, although I believe my issue can be attributed to debugging. I have literally tried everything and it persists.

Attached are my SF diagnostics tool logs.

Debugging :: BSOD After Waking Up From Sleep Mode Related To Xonar Card?

Jun 22, 2014

I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 recently. Now when my computer wakes up from sleep I receive a DRIVER_IRQ_NOT LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD related to cmudaxp.sys, which I've discovered is related to my Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card. I am running the Windows 8.1 beta drivers directly from Asus's website, and the drivers were working fine before my clean install. What could be causing this problem now, after everything was fine before?

Debugging :: Windows 8 Crashes After It Wakes Up From Sleep Mode

Sep 15, 2014

I've actually had this problem for a while, I really should have taken care of it sooner. It is mostly because I found ways around it, which probably aren't too good for my computer. If I leave music running in the background and put the computer to sleep then the error won't occur. Needless-to-say - and as the title says- The system crashes upon waking up from sleep mode. The screen turns blue and says: "Sorry, your computer encountered an error and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you" The results from the diagnostic test have been attached

System recoveries and restores haven't worked, hence the reason why I've sort of given up on the problem until now.

Asus S400CA / Windows 8.1 Crashes Going Into Sleep Mode

Jan 8, 2014

I have a new Asus S400CA that came with Windows 8 and I updated to 8.1 out of the box. The computer crashes when it goes into sleep mode probably 1 out of 3 times. I have tried updating all the drivers, including the wireless driver. I have it set to make minidumps but they aren't being created anymore (last one was on 12/5). Usually I get no indication that the computer crashes but it takes a long time to boot back up, although occasionally it will say Windows encountered a problem and has to restart.

I am also getting a ton of Schannel 36888 errors, although I don't know if that's related.

Debugging :: Intel N2230 - BSoD Always With Wireless Card?

Nov 5, 2013

I tried to update my driver for my wireless card (Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230). Basically, I've been getting a number of different errors and then the BSOD from the Bad Pool thing to others everytime I try to:

- update the driver (through network & sharing and also win update)

- uninstall the driver

- disable the wireless adapter

It will also randomly shut down and give me the BSoD every few hours without doing anything other than surfing on firefox. I've attached the logs as directed in the sticky

Debugging :: Windows 8.1 X64 Crashes During Sleep Due To Driver Timeout

Jan 25, 2014

On a semi-regular basis (two or three times a week) my computer will crash and shut down instead of sleeping.

I downloaded and installed the symbols and debugger, and the bugcheck points this:

FAILURE_ID_HASH_STRING: km:0x9f_3_power_down_athwbx_image_pci.sys

athwbx.sys is the Atheros Wireless card for my ASUS p8z77-v Pro.

I've already updated the drivers to the newest (10.0.0.270) but the problem still occurs.

Occasionally, the same card will lose all wireless connectivity. Only a restart fixes it, and the computer doesn't always restart in that case - it hangs during the shutdown process and I have to hit the reset switch.

I'd like that confirmed before I bug ASUS about a possible replacement. (Or replace it myself.)

Should I update the other drivers? ASUS website is a few months old at this point, they're extremely slow at posting updates, so I'd have to track them down manually.

I included the extract from the diagnostic tool.

Network / Sharing :: Wireless And Wired Network Limited After Sleep Mode?

Apr 13, 2014

Since a few weeks, I have a problem with my laptop running Windows 8.1 (Toshiba Satellite P50-A-12PBE). Sometimes, after bringing Windows back from sleep mode, I seem to have no connection to the internet. Windows says the connection is 'limited', wether I'm connected with a wire or wireless. Resetting the router doesn't solve anything, but rebooting my pc does. Since both the wired and wireless network are always simultaneously affected, I think this hasn't anything to do with drivers (I already have the latest versions by the way). I have made screenshots with ipconfig-results when I'm connected with a wire.

Debugging :: Windows 8 Machine Crashes When Resuming From Sleep - Sometimes BSOD

My Windows 8 machine crashes when resuming from sleep. This used to happen only intermittently, and I assumed it was just a feature of Windows 8 and I put up with it for a while. But now it happens every single time the laptop goes to sleep, and I'm losing lots of unsaved info and it's quite aggravating.

Here is the .zip file created after I ran SF Diagnostic Tool. (attached)

Debugging :: Black Screen When Waking From Sleep Mode With Legacy HW

Nov 24, 2013

My system is old : MSI Neo2 Nforce3 + HD4650 Radeon AGP + 2 GB mem + AMD Athlon 3000+

However, I wanted to try Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation for it and was able to install it successfully with 32 bit version (64 bit didn't work). I installed Radeon legacy AGP Hotfix 12.6 drivers that seem to work for the old AGP card giving Youtube HD playback! Not too shabby for a single core beast.

So I have been happy with the system performance (faster to boot than XP etc.).

However, I have encountered two problems that I haven't been able to resolve:

1 - Realtek Gigabit Ethernet (8111) fails to initialize the Internet on some boots, requiring enable/disable driver to make it work. I have installed newest drivers from Realtek website but no effect.

2 - When the system goes to sleep, it wakes up with black screen and no way to get picture back except resetting the computer. I have tried to change my MB BIOS setup (I have the latest BIOS installed) to disable S3 and use only S1 mode but to no avail. Black screen awaits in every wake up. I have also experienced once the driver_power_state_failure error..

So, I see there are many posts about black screens and sleep modes but I haven't found the solution for Nforce3 motherboard AGP setups yet.

Debugging :: BSOD Returning From Sleep Mode - Error 0x000000c1

Sep 15, 2014

I've been working with a computer I've put together for a couple of months now, and I haven't been able to figure out what exactly is causing various BSODs. They mostly happen when coming out of sleep mode. The crashes would generally happen once every couple of days. One time I did get it to crash while running the driver Verifier application while copying files from one folder to another. I've been whittling the components left in the machine down, and I'm down to just a hard drive and dvd-drive as extra components at this point. The only configuration I have left to try is to switch to a different hard drive and only run that.

The errors would generally have to do with various "Pool header" issues. I've tried running memtest overnight and it'd get though 6-8 passes easily each overnight session. I've done that a couple of times. I also have run chkdsk to see if there were any issues on the hard drives, but those have come up without issues too. So since I'm not seeing any hardware issues, I'm thinking that this is just a driver issue. I have updated whatever drivers I could see that looked out of date and I make sure that I have the latest Windows Updates. I've tried to keep the software installed on the machine to a minimum after I did a complete reinstallation of Windows 8.1.

Debugging :: Driver Power State Failure In Sleep Mode

Jun 6, 2014

issue with my laptop where I can't allow it to enter sleep mode or else it will restart/appear to have restarted the next time I wake it up. At first I thought it might be a power options issue, but I made sure that the computer was set to sleep and not restart when I close the lid. I've checked the bluescreen viewer and the cause of the restart seems to come from a driver power state failure coming from ntoskrnl.exe+1fcc1e, hal.dll+6a37, and storport.sys+33f0.

I've already run sfc/scannow to check for damaged files and I was also able to replace them using a DISM command, so now scanning the computer doesn't run into any errors, but this driver error still persists.

Sidenote: The driver errors mainly started after I reinstalled Kaspersky onto my computer to fix some issues that I had with it. Before that I was getting a couple of kernel data inpage errors, the latest of which occurred June 1.

Debugging :: Driver Power State Failure After Resuming From Sleep Mode

Jun 6, 2014

I'm having a BSOD problem. After walking computer from sleep mode, within 1-2 minutes it will get a BSOD with the "driver power state failure" error and restart, but interestingly I never get the error the moment I wake up the computer. I'm using a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P with Windows 8.1 64-bit. I already tried uninstalling the Intel HD 4000 driver, restarting computer, and installing the one on Lenovo's site (as this was suggested on the Lenovo forum as a common fix) but it didn't work.

The problem only started occurring after one of the following:
- Updating Malwarebytes to latest last week
- Installing a Windows update last week (there were 3 installed components, 1 of them was an Intel HD 4000 driver update, forgot what the other 2 were)
- Updating GeForce Experience and latest NVIDIA Graphics Driver (337.88), it included NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.13.1220

Debugging :: Unable To Make WinDBG Analyze Dump Files

Mar 22, 2014

I am trying to debug some crash dumps which all point to NTOSKRNL.EXE but I am unable to debug or even analyze it because the WinDBG throws me an error :-

Code: ************* Symbol Path validation summary **************Response Time (ms)
LocationOK C:symbols Symbol search path is: C:symbols Executable search path is: C:symbols Unable to load image SystemRootsystem32
toskrnl.exe, Win32 error 0n2*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for ntoskrnl.exe***
ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for ntoskrnl.exe

[code].....

Now, I am unable to understand what is the reason behind this even after much browsing. Also, the symbols are downloaded and saved in C:/Symbols. I am sure that these are working because some DUMP files which do not point to NTOSKRNL get debugged fine.

Also, one more issue I am facing that whenever I have to open another crash dump file immediately after closing one, the option for opening the Crash Dump gets greyed out -_-' . The only way to open another DUMP file is via closing and opening workspace and everything again?

Audio :: Windows 8 Not Seeing USB Sound Card After Wake From Sleep?

I have a home built HTPC running Windows 8 with Windows Media Center. My sound card is a Silverstone EB01 USB DAC (i.e., it's an external USB device). When the computer wakes from sleep, there is no sound. I can fix this by either (a) unplugging and reconnecting the USB connector or (b) disabling then re-enabling the sound device.

What's worse, it worked perfectly fine under Windows 7.

There are no drivers for this device, it's pure plug'n'play. In case it's relevant, the Device Manager seems to recognise it as a Burr-Brown PCM2072E.

Debugging :: BSOD On Windows 8.1 - No Backup / Restore Points

Feb 26, 2014

I have the famous blue screen of death for the first time. I am using windows 8.1. Every time I try to boot into my rig, it says that:"windows has encountered some problems and need to restart". I am using another computer to write this message but most of all I have absolutely no clue how to resolve the issue. Restore Points were turned off in the rig to save space - Not my idea but it is what it is I have no back up - I am starting my rig and as soon as I get to the log in screen, the unit restart to a blue screen. I have a couple of options but most of them can't since I have no back up and no restore point.

When the rig restarts, I land on a blue page with 1 continue 2 troubleshoot 3 turn off your PC I choose 2 (because of tools). Then I have: 1 Refresh you PC: I need the refresh more than my PC 2 Reset your PC. It says if you want to remove all your files. Definitely not what I want to do. 3 Advanced options I choose 3 and then I get: 1 System Restore: No restore point so useless 2 System Image Recovery: No backup so useless 3 Start Up Repair: Tried that but no go 4 Command prompt: Tried that but I have no clue on how to move forward once on command prompt. 5 Start Up Behavior I picked that one and went option 1 to 4. 4 being the option that allowed to log into the unit in safe mode. Once I am in Safe Mode what should I be doing ?
