Debugging :: Windows 8.1 X64 Crashes During Sleep Due To Driver Timeout
Jan 25, 2014
On a semi-regular basis (two or three times a week) my computer will crash and shut down instead of sleeping.
I downloaded and installed the symbols and debugger, and the bugcheck points this:
FAILURE_ID_HASH_STRING: km:0x9f_3_power_down_athwbx_image_pci.sys
athwbx.sys is the Atheros Wireless card for my ASUS p8z77-v Pro.
I've already updated the drivers to the newest (10.0.0.270) but the problem still occurs.
Occasionally, the same card will lose all wireless connectivity. Only a restart fixes it, and the computer doesn't always restart in that case - it hangs during the shutdown process and I have to hit the reset switch.
I'd like that confirmed before I bug ASUS about a possible replacement. (Or replace it myself.)
Should I update the other drivers? ASUS website is a few months old at this point, they're extremely slow at posting updates, so I'd have to track them down manually.
I included the extract from the diagnostic tool.

I've actually had this problem for a while, I really should have taken care of it sooner. It is mostly because I found ways around it, which probably aren't too good for my computer. If I leave music running in the background and put the computer to sleep then the error won't occur. Needless-to-say - and as the title says- The system crashes upon waking up from sleep mode. The screen turns blue and says: "Sorry, your computer encountered an error and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you" The results from the diagnostic test have been attached
System recoveries and restores haven't worked, hence the reason why I've sort of given up on the problem until now.

My Windows 8 machine crashes when resuming from sleep. This used to happen only intermittently, and I assumed it was just a feature of Windows 8 and I put up with it for a while. But now it happens every single time the laptop goes to sleep, and I'm losing lots of unsaved info and it's quite aggravating.
Here is the .zip file created after I ran SF Diagnostic Tool. (attached)

I get frequent BSODs, AMD driver crashes, screen display errors, game crashes, running Windows 8.1 on my AMD A10-5700 APU w/ 8GB RAM. Videos in browsers (firefox, IE, and/or chrome) are common culprits, as are running certain games (recently, GTA IV). Sometimes the BSODs and driver crashes are repeatable (loading certain games or certain web sites). As far as I know, this has happened since day 1 with this computer (refurb from Lenovo), though the frequency waxes and wanes.
Can sometimes make games work better by reducing graphics settings.
Have tried refreshing windows; the ~30 .dmp files in the diagnostic report are since I did that, less than a month ago.
Have tried removing and reinstalling AMD catalyst drivers.
Have tried removing RAM sticks one at a time, but still get the same problems. Windows Memory Diagnostic did not detect any errors.

I am using an ASUS K55N laptop, equipped with an AMD A8-4500M APU, 4GB single-channel RAM, and of course, Windows 8 standard x64.
Occasionally, anywhere from an hour to three days after a boot-up, the computer will hang while in sleep mode (screen will be off but indicator lights will remain on for about 5 minutes in sleep mode) and shut off. Upon restarting, I'll be greeted by a "Your PC ran into a problem and had to restart" Windows prompt. Of course, a minidump will also be produced. However, there is no BSOD anywhere to be found.
Upon looking into these dump files with WinDbg, all of them point toward my Atheros AR9485 wireless card's driver; either athw8x.sys or athrx.sys depending on the driver I was using at the time. I have tried several Atheros drivers, to no avail. I have tried using new drivers, old drivers, Windows 7 drivers, you name it. At this moment, I am using a Windows 7 driver. Yet, it has not solved the issue.
Verifier is disabled, although I believe my issue can be attributed to debugging. I have literally tried everything and it persists.
Attached are my SF diagnostics tool logs.

issue with my laptop where I can't allow it to enter sleep mode or else it will restart/appear to have restarted the next time I wake it up. At first I thought it might be a power options issue, but I made sure that the computer was set to sleep and not restart when I close the lid. I've checked the bluescreen viewer and the cause of the restart seems to come from a driver power state failure coming from ntoskrnl.exe+1fcc1e, hal.dll+6a37, and storport.sys+33f0.
I've already run sfc/scannow to check for damaged files and I was also able to replace them using a DISM command, so now scanning the computer doesn't run into any errors, but this driver error still persists.
Sidenote: The driver errors mainly started after I reinstalled Kaspersky onto my computer to fix some issues that I had with it. Before that I was getting a couple of kernel data inpage errors, the latest of which occurred June 1.

I've been getting persistent BSOD's when attempting to wake up my computer (Lenovo Twist u230) from sleep. I am also sporadically getting Kernal Data Inpage Error BSOD while using my computer.
My machine is Windows 8, installed from factory with a recent refresh done. SFC /SCANNOW and DISM both come up clean. All of my hardware diagnostics are also clean.

I have been using my asus laptop but recently started blue screening. When trying to shut it down the screen will go black, but the system lights remain on and it remains running, however irresponsive. It also began showing a blue screen with the warning "Driver power state failure".

I'm having a BSOD problem. After walking computer from sleep mode, within 1-2 minutes it will get a BSOD with the "driver power state failure" error and restart, but interestingly I never get the error the moment I wake up the computer. I'm using a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P with Windows 8.1 64-bit. I already tried uninstalling the Intel HD 4000 driver, restarting computer, and installing the one on Lenovo's site (as this was suggested on the Lenovo forum as a common fix) but it didn't work.
The problem only started occurring after one of the following:
- Updating Malwarebytes to latest last week
- Installing a Windows update last week (there were 3 installed components, 1 of them was an Intel HD 4000 driver update, forgot what the other 2 were)
- Updating GeForce Experience and latest NVIDIA Graphics Driver (337.88), it included NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.13.1220

I have a new Asus S400CA that came with Windows 8 and I updated to 8.1 out of the box. The computer crashes when it goes into sleep mode probably 1 out of 3 times. I have tried updating all the drivers, including the wireless driver. I have it set to make minidumps but they aren't being created anymore (last one was on 12/5). Usually I get no indication that the computer crashes but it takes a long time to boot back up, although occasionally it will say Windows encountered a problem and has to restart.
I am also getting a ton of Schannel 36888 errors, although I don't know if that's related.

This is a strange issue that started happening to me a few weeks ago. On my laptop, I put the computer to sleep, then close the lid. To wake it up, I just open the lid. Recently, about 1/4 of the time I wake up my computer, the lock screen does not appear, but instead it seems that my computer crashes then restarts. I don't have any USB devices plugged into my laptop, just the power cord.

My computer has always had intermittent BSOD but generally it's been only 1-2 a month and after a system restart everything works fine. In the last couple of weeks I've been getting BSOD after only a few minutes of operation every time I start up and generally after these errors the computer won't boot - sometimes it will be a black screen after BIOS check, sometimes it won't even get that far - just black screen without the BIOS check even starting. Usually the only way to get it to boot again is to disconnect the power and remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard. I've run driver verifier which has indeed generated it's own minidumps but I don't really understand what these error reports are trying to tell me.

My Sony Vaio Multi-Flip has been causing a lot of pain recently. A couple of months ago, it was making a lot of noise (which apparently came from the fan) but the problem resolved itself and has rarely occurred in the last 2 months. The engineer said at the time, that it was most likely a fan noise (as opposed to the HDD).
However from the last few days, the laptop shuts down out of nowhere (without a blue screen). This happened 5-6 times consecutively the first time, after which I was somehow able to do a system restore to a couple of weeks earlier, to see if it might have been a software issue. That temporarily seemed to fix it, but a few days later the issue is back. It happens every now and then (say once or twice a day). The laptop just shuts down completely in a snap. What might be causing this? I have an important business trip coming up and the last thing I want is for this to happen when I am in a client meeting.
I notice my CPU temperatures are normally between the 55-70 degrees on average usage, so I wonder if replacing/cleaning the fan is the way to go?
Also, every now and then, I hear a "beeping noise" and I notice this is usually when I lift the laptop up or tilt it slightly, while it is still running. This is shown as a critical error in my event log, with error source "Kernel Power" and error description " The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
DM Log collector results attached as SF Doesnt seem to be working for me on Windows 8.1. The greens status bar doesnt go past the "u" of "lunch" text above it despite waiting for ages.

I've recently assembled my pc and everything seemed to be working fine. But one day my pc was frozen on the window menu. I hard to forceably turn off my computer and restart it. When i turned it back down my pc would turn on and off repeatedly until it finally turned on for good. When my computer freezes, my keyboard, mouse and headset Immediately turns off, basically anything connected to the mobo. here are my specs
OS: window 8.1
MOBO: Asus P9x79 WS
CPU: intel i7 4930k 3.4ghz
GPU: 2x 780 ti's
Ram: Corsair Dominator 16gb 2400mhz (4x4gb)
PSU: Corsair AX1200i
Hardrive: 2tb Seagate SSHD
I've enabled XMP to run the ram at recommended settings, and disabled it, both options didn't solve the problem. It happens randomly, it could be on running fine for 8-10hours but out of no where the computer freezes acts wild (shuts itself off and on by itself).

Recently i got my hands on a titanfall beta-key and to play i had to have a 64bit system. I asked my friend to support with the upgrade and everything went fine until my pc started randomly crashing with Memory_management as the most common message. i've had a few others too but mainly this one. I don't understand that my pc keeps crashing because before with my win7 32bit there was never no issue. I tried doing this debug tool thing but it says access denied and the cmd window that opens also says WIN32 so did something go wrong with the installation of win 8 or what?

I'm getting quite regular BSODs and crashes, previously I was getting crashes from AMD 14.7 beta drives so I swapped down to the 14.4 drivers. Now I'm not getting BSODs from atikmdag.sys, but I'm getting BSODs from what looks like ntoskrnl.exe. Additionally sometimes my computer will freeze, the display will show a static image, and the computer won't respond to keyboard/mouse input. Sounds can be heard to play as normal indefinitely (I haven't left it for more than a minute so not sure how long it would continue). This suggests to me that it's a display driver problem.
Here's the list of BSODs as shown by BlueScreenView:
Highlighted in blue are the crashes before changing drivers.
This is my dxdiag, I'm running an A10-7850k, 8gb corsair vengence pro 2400mhz, fm2a88x-itx+ and an 840 evo ssd.
I can upload any requested dump files or information.
I couldn't use SF diagnostic tool because I don't have .NET framework 3.5 installed, and when trying to install it I got error code 0x800F0906, and following all of MS's instructions failed (could still connected to update server, just not for .NET 3.5, using install media failed probably because 8 is different to 8.1).
This is what BlueScreenView calls a "minidump" (this is for the most recent crash shown above. I'm not sure if this is any different from what SF Debug collects).
Here's my output from SF Debug.

I encounter really frequent bsod crashes (3-6 every day) with various errors on my relatively new notebook - Asus G750JH-T4080H. these include:
INTERRUPT_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
TIMER_OR_DPC_INVALID
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and
KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
Additional info: They mostly occur when in windows, browsing the web using firefox. only very seldom they appear during gaming. i also have to admit that i made recent changes to registry (regarding "The server {9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout." errors in event log/viewer") because of another problem (but the bsods were already there before that changes, but maybe not so frequently).
I just installed the new 8.1 windows updates, 30 minutes later new bsod appeared (uploaded current Diagnostic Tool zip):
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

This is a new system running Windows 8.1. I have been having seemingly random BSOD and crashes. I disconnected a 2T USB backup drive and BSODs have slowed, but not disappeared. BSODs happen most often when waking the system, which seems to take far longer than it should. Error message vary. The most recent was a System Service Exception IRQ_Not_Less_or_Equal.
