My old vista laptop died so I upgraded to a new laptop pre-loaded with 8.1. I tried to load some files including photos from my Seagate hard drive but I get a message to the effect that they are not supported. How can I download the other files?
View 2 RepliesMy old Sony Vaio broke the other day, so I've just got a new laptop. The Vaio was Vista, but now I'm on Windows 8.
I'd been backing up my Vaio to an external harddrive, but all I ever did was run the backup and let it get on with it. So for example, within the external harddrive now it just has a list of the dates I ran a backup, followed by 'Backup files 1', 'Backup files 2' etc. I'm hoping these include some of the documents/files I had on there, but I can't be sure. What exactly will have been backed up here?
I've been trying now to restore these files on my new laptop, but I can't seem to find a way. Is it possible?
I have windows 8.1 and c-drive is system drive. Programs are mainly installed to C: but I have also some programs installed to E: Program Files, Program Files (68), Program Data etc . Now I want to to move E-drive contents to another hard drive (all files stored on e-drive).
I think the safest way is to reinstall all programs, but I don't want to do this. Also it is possible to move files to new partition which has another drive letter than e: and create link, but this I don't want to do either.
Can I do it like this:
1) Change e-drive letter to x
2) Create new e-drive to another hard drive
3) Copy e-drive contents to new e-dive
4) that is it?
Can I use normal copy - paste to copy all files? I think register references are the same after these steps because drive letter and content of the e-drive are still the same.
Does my method work? It sound so easy to do. Is it "too easy"? Does it have any risks?
Basically at the moment i am using Windows 7 Home and will be upgrading to Windows 8.1 in about a weeks time. I currently have Windows 7 installed on a 60Gb SSD and i have a secondary 500Gb Seagate Barracuda for other files. What i am wondering is if i clean install Windows 8 onto the SSD only will i still be able to use the 2nd drive in Windows 8? Basically this drive has a fair amount of music / videos etc and i would like to make to make sure i can use these. I would like to do a clean install and not an upgrade btw.

View 4 Replies View Related I have a TB drive and when I was trying to delete some files, it crashed. As a consequence, the recycle bin has some invalid information in it. If I try to perma-delete files in there, the system freezes. I try to restore files, it freezes. When I tried to restore files, it also asked me if I wanted to replace the files in the respective locations that it was restoring to, which to me means that the files are still there and its in some kind of limbo.
I'm sure this problem is at least somewhat related to the hybrid boot feature with the crashes. I dual boot with Linux Mint 15. I think that upon messing with some files on the TB drive and going back to Windows caused it to... well I'll say have a seizure. Now I've done chkdsks and it never seems to truly finish. It gets to the end, and sits there, and maybe even freeze or crash. But when I do a chkdsk I can usually access my files in Linux in read-only mode.
While, in Windows 8, I can still access everything perfectly fine. I can read, write, and do what I want normally so long as it doesn't involve anything with the recycle bin. Also, say I try to go to the files on the HDD that I tried to delete but are still there and delete them, it freezes crashes.
I've also disabled that hybrid boot feature and have attempted clean shutdowns and in some cases it would even freeze on shutdown. Also I've done both chkdsk /r and chkdsk /f with the only difference that one takes hours and the other doesn't.
Right now I have 250GB HDD. I want to buy a 1TB HDD. But I dont want to reinstall everything.
I want to move whole OS from old hard drive to new hard drive. Is it possible? if possible, can you plz explain me how?
Right now, my 250GB HDD has 6 partitions. I only want to move OS ( drive C) to new Hard Drive. I dont want to take backup of entire 250GB HDD !!
I have windows 8.1, which is not allowing me to save files any files except to the desktop, my documents, downloads, pictures, music, and video!

I'm trying to recover lost partition and files from external USB hard drive (Maxtor Portable 250GB). I'm using disk Internals sofitware and the software finds the files, but when I try to save them on the drive, each time I get a watchdog, or another BOSD error.

So I saved it. I cant open it or naturally upload it to my website like I could with seven. Why is it saving with the additional suffix .dat example - logo.png.dat or logo.jpg.dat? Saving it to my desktop and trying to open it suggests I look for apps to open it...really!

i was using my comp when i saw an alert that said something about a hard drive error and that my PC needed to be reset to fix it. so i reset the PC and saw another message saying something about restoring to a previous point. i wasn't really thinking and i clicked OK.
upon reset, i noticed the HD in question was now showing up as 1.36TB (it's a 2.5TB HD). it also has a bunch of files from another HD, which is odd.
i've used Error Checking under Tools of the HD's Properties, but the results showed no errors.
i'd like to regain the "lost" capacity w/o having to reformat my entire HD.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I have both Windows 7 and 8 on my machine and am currently primarily using 8. I save all of my work and files to my 8 partition C: whenever I choose the location, but for applications/programs that automatically save to a library and where I can't choose the location, those programs always save it to my Windows 7 partition E:.
For example, using Windows key + PrtSc takes a screenshot of your screen and saves it to your pictures library. However, the picture gets saved to E:Users[username]Pictures instead of C:Users[username]Pictures. I guess it thinks my main library is still on the 7 partition instead of the 8 partition. The same things happens with games that I play where the save files are automatically saved in the My Games folder in My Documents. The save files are saved in the E: partition documents library instead of C: partition documents library.
Basically, I don't know where I'd go or what setting I'd change to fix this behavior. My default OS is set to Windows 8 in msconfig and all of my games are installed on my C drive, so I don't know why they would save to my E drive. Since the screenshot command uses the same behavior, I'm guessing there's a setting somewhere that's making my Windows 7 library the default.
Bought a new Acer all-in-one and immediately upgraded it to 8.1 via a 3GB DL. Went perfectly.
Cleverly (I thought) I saved the update files should I ever need to do the update again.
Then the Acer had a hardware problem so I returned it to Best Buy for a replacement.
Now, I try to apply the 8.1 upgrade files that I previously saved from the store DL to the replaced computer.
It asks for a key, but won't accept either the one from the new replaced machine, nor the one that I returned.
Are these licenses now tied to an individual computer, via a unique code embedded in the BIOS or some such??
I really don't want to do the DL again, since my bandwidth is metered and 3GB takes a good percentage of my total monthly quota.
Is It possible to pin actual saved files to the Start Menu like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets (or anything else for that matter) as well as programs. I use this on my Windows 8 at work.
For example my Microsoft Excel file shortcut will be like follows:
Target: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" "D:UsersUser NameYour File Name.xlsx"
Start in: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15"
I usually set the Start In to the MS Office Folder or the File location folder, it doesn't seem to affect it either way. I created a folder in my username called Shortcuts and put all of them in there. Because Windows sees this as an executable program it will allow you to right click it and to pin it to the Start Menu even though it actually starts the saved file you need. I use this for my Access database files too. As long as you set the correct path to the file name, it works every time. You can name the shortcut whatever name you need as well.
Anyway, I thought I'd share it since it makes a great time saver being able to launch your most frequently used files straight from the Start Menu in Windows 8 rather than having to launch the program and then trying to open the saved file.
Laptop - Vista service pack 2 Desktop - Windows 8.1
Both computers can see each other, but they only see the "Public" files. I would like to access the entire hard drive of the laptop. I turned off the password protection, right clicked "Share with everyone".
I used the Easy Windows Backup on my old machine (running vista), saved to an external hard drive. Installed the latest 8.1.1 on a new machine and tried to use the Easy Windows Backup to restore my stuff, but I get this message "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP".
Is there any way I can recover my files from the Easy Transfer Backup?
I have been trying (without success) to transfer my e-mail folder files from my old computer (Dell Inspiron 530 using Vista) to my new computer (Sony Vaio using Windows 8). The transfer is from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail.
The recommended method on the old machine using a flash drive is as follows: File-Export-Messages-Microsoft Windows Mail-Select Folder (K:New Folder)-Next-Select Folders-Next.
At this point the folders should transfer to the flash drive. Unfortunately I keep getting and error message that says that "Export did complete successfully and Windows Mail was unable to export all messages" - (in fact only a few messages were transferred) The message then goes onto say that " your disk may not have enough space (it is a 32GB flash drive and has more than enough space!) or that some messages may be corrupted. Run disk clean-up or delete some files and try again". I have done this without improvement.
Another approach that was recommended was to find all of the e-mail files (.eml files) and copy them to the new computer via the flash drive. I can copy them to the flash drive without problem but am not sure how/where to import them into the C: drive of the new computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.What do I do?
edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.
I want to be able to highlight a load of media files and then press enter to open them in the program I've designated.
Windows apparently doesn't let you do it in case you accidentally open too many files, but I'd like to.

when plugging in my seagate freeagent hard drive i get the message "USB device not recognized. I have been to device manager and it appears as "unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)". I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, checked for new drivers/updates.

So, I installed apache server on my system. Now the issue is, I am not able to update config 'httpd' file as it shows "Access is denied" error. When I try opening the txt file using "Run as Administrator" an error pops out - "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action .....". I have tried many things but I am not able to fix this. In what time period I would have significantly created my site, I am just trying to fix this thing.
