Do other windows 8.1 users have this issue to where files are not able to be saved either?
I think I found the culprit in the security tab about preventing files from be saved

Windows 8 Adds DAT Extension To All Saved Files?
Dec 26, 2012I bought a Asus ROG with Windows 8 pre installed. I was making a logo with pixlr and saving it to my desktop when I noticed the only save option was "data file". So I saved it. I cant open it or naturally upload it to my website like I could with seven. Why is it saving with the additional suffix .dat example - logo.png.dat or logo.jpg.dat? Saving it to my desktop and trying to open it suggests I look for apps to open it...really!

Files Get Saved In The Wrong Library When Dual Booting
Jan 9, 2013So I have both Windows 7 and 8 on my machine and am currently primarily using 8. I save all of my work and files to my 8 partition C: whenever I choose the location, but for applications/programs that automatically save to a library and where I can't choose the location, those programs always save it to my Windows 7 partition E:.
For example, using Windows key + PrtSc takes a screenshot of your screen and saves it to your pictures library. However, the picture gets saved to E:Users[username]Pictures instead of C:Users[username]Pictures. I guess it thinks my main library is still on the 7 partition instead of the 8 partition. The same things happens with games that I play where the save files are automatically saved in the My Games folder in My Documents. The save files are saved in the E: partition documents library instead of C: partition documents library.
Basically, I don't know where I'd go or what setting I'd change to fix this behavior. My default OS is set to Windows 8 in msconfig and all of my games are installed on my C drive, so I don't know why they would save to my E drive. Since the screenshot command uses the same behavior, I'm guessing there's a setting somewhere that's making my Windows 7 library the default.
Can't Open Files Saved On Hard Drive From Vista To 8.1
Mar 8, 2014My old vista laptop died so I upgraded to a new laptop pre-loaded with 8.1. I tried to load some files including photos from my Seagate hard drive but I get a message to the effect that they are not supported. How can I download the other files?

Nov 7, 2013Bought a new Acer all-in-one and immediately upgraded it to 8.1 via a 3GB DL. Went perfectly.
Cleverly (I thought) I saved the update files should I ever need to do the update again.
Then the Acer had a hardware problem so I returned it to Best Buy for a replacement.
Now, I try to apply the 8.1 upgrade files that I previously saved from the store DL to the replaced computer.
It asks for a key, but won't accept either the one from the new replaced machine, nor the one that I returned.
Are these licenses now tied to an individual computer, via a unique code embedded in the BIOS or some such??
I really don't want to do the DL again, since my bandwidth is metered and 3GB takes a good percentage of my total monthly quota.
Pin Actual Saved Files To Start Menu Like Word Documents And Excel Spreadsheets
Nov 27, 2012Is It possible to pin actual saved files to the Start Menu like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets (or anything else for that matter) as well as programs. I use this on my Windows 8 at work.
For example my Microsoft Excel file shortcut will be like follows:
Target: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" "D:UsersUser NameYour File Name.xlsx"
Start in: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15"
I usually set the Start In to the MS Office Folder or the File location folder, it doesn't seem to affect it either way. I created a folder in my username called Shortcuts and put all of them in there. Because Windows sees this as an executable program it will allow you to right click it and to pin it to the Start Menu even though it actually starts the saved file you need. I use this for my Access database files too. As long as you set the correct path to the file name, it works every time. You can name the shortcut whatever name you need as well.
Anyway, I thought I'd share it since it makes a great time saver being able to launch your most frequently used files straight from the Start Menu in Windows 8 rather than having to launch the program and then trying to open the saved file.

Apps / Software :: Missing Some Programs In Programs And Features?
Apr 2, 2014Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.
Can't Find Old Files After Upgrading From 7 To 8
Apr 6, 2013dad upgraded from windows 7 to 8 a few months ago and selected to keep his old files (i.e. pictures, vids, so on) now we cant find his old files. I have gone to the windows.old file and there are files there but they all say that they are empty. everything else seems to be fine but we cant find all of his vacation pictures or other media that he really was not wanting to lose.

The problem with commercial duplicate detectors is they match the entire name or the CRC of a file which in this case will be different.

I want to use some executable files in "d:commonin" with my web application hosted by IIS8, but I found that the web application could not find the executable files in "d:commonin", which should exist in "PATH"

Windows 8.1 Search Can't Find Files
Dec 7, 2013I figured out how to search but Windows 8.1 stopped searching for files. I type a word in the window and nothing happens after I hit enter.
I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
Media Player Can't Find Files
Jul 2, 2014My "c" drive is starting to get full mostly because of a very large music collection. My friend said"simple,just put everything on "d". I think I should have gotten an external drive. Anyhow, now when I go to listen to a playlist song on media player, I get blue dots with an "i"in them and a message saying that the media player can't find the file. I tried changing the file location for the media player to"d"drive,but it would not let me (suggestion from same friend who said "mine works fine in "d" drive. Should I move everything back or get an external drive or is there a way to make this work. Asus Notebook a45x ,Windows 8,Media player version unknown.

Feb 7, 2014After updating to 8.1, windows search is slow, even though I disabled Bing and I don't have extra locations in the index, and it doesn't find files even though they are in subfolders of My Documents. This problem is very outstanding with Word files.
I tried deleting the Data folder, and rebuilding the index, but to no avail. I need a way to search for text within files, so the "Everything" app does not seem to be the solution. I am trying out AgentRansack right now, and it does work, but it is slow and uses up almost all the CPU when it is searching.

Sep 12, 2013I have Office 2010 which came preinstalled on my Dell 8300 XPS. I have the key and have recovered the program in the past.
If I Refresh my pc, and find the folder Windows. Old, can I get the Office program out of it or do I have to download from a site and install again?
Obviously I don't know what is in the folder nor what it allows you to retrieve . I do know that when done with it you can delete it.
I can retrieve some of the programs and apps that refresh removes and that is not hard to do. Perhaps I just open the folder, locate the program, and copy and paste it or click 'reinstall'.
Hardware Drivers :: Search Find Files On Backup Drive
Feb 21, 2014I'm not sure how far reaching this is but I just noticed that when I select a folder and type a file name in the search bar on the right of the address bar, files are found on my backup drive, which is attached by USB to the PC, this drive is attached because it contains other partitions for file storage.
The folder in this case was on the desktop and it shows that it is on C: Drive, but files were found on the H: Drive which is where I run my backup to.
When I un-attach the H drive the files found do not respond to left or right click.

Jun 8, 2014When I tried to reset my laptop, it read "could not find the files needed". mine is an Acer aspire V5, it didn't came with an installation disc or media, i know it should have a hidden partition for recovery, but i think the system is having trouble with it. i think a malware might have done this, i got malware bytes, I tried norton online scan and eset online scan, but did not detect any. before this, i experienced my firefox browser icon on the taskbar progressing a download but cant see anything on downloads tab, i closed firefox several times, but it continued everytime i opened firefox, and it did finished its download.
Later i noticed explorer.exe is always having an established connection in TCPview, without me opening any apps. so i thought i really need to reset the computer, but this is my problem. I've already run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth restore health on command prompt, but it showed no integrity violation.
