View 9 RepliesI figured out how to search but Windows 8.1 stopped searching for files. I type a word in the window and nothing happens after I hit enter.
I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
After updating to 8.1, windows search is slow, even though I disabled Bing and I don't have extra locations in the index, and it doesn't find files even though they are in subfolders of My Documents. This problem is very outstanding with Word files.
I tried deleting the Data folder, and rebuilding the index, but to no avail. I need a way to search for text within files, so the "Everything" app does not seem to be the solution. I am trying out AgentRansack right now, and it does work, but it is slow and uses up almost all the CPU when it is searching.
I'm not sure how far reaching this is but I just noticed that when I select a folder and type a file name in the search bar on the right of the address bar, files are found on my backup drive, which is attached by USB to the PC, this drive is attached because it contains other partitions for file storage.
The folder in this case was on the desktop and it shows that it is on C: Drive, but files were found on the H: Drive which is where I run my backup to.
When I un-attach the H drive the files found do not respond to left or right click.
Windows 8 search doesn't find files which I know are on my PC as I can navigate to them.
I have indexing on. I search by opening my computer and typing the search name in the top right box.
Since 8.1 I've noticed that Charm search is extremely slow.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm sure Microsoft thought they were solving problems by completely changing the search functionality in Windows 8.1. However, I can't possibly be the only person who thinks they've ruined one of the best features of Windows 8, can I?
Before the upgrade, I could start typing in the Start screen, then select where I wanted to search (for example, I could click an app in the list to search within that app, or select files or settings etc.). Furthermore, apps would make use of the search charm, instead of having a search box on-screen all the time. This all made sense - a beautifully simple way to access the function in all apps. In 8.1 there are search boxes stuck on the screen in various locations. Two examples are: Mail, with the search box at the top of the list of emails on the left side, and Wikipedia, with the search box over on the right.
This elegant search function has been overhauled for the worse, IMO. Now, to search the Wikipedia app (for e.g.), I have to first load the app, and then search with the search box, which has added a step. And the universal search now brings up an annoying separate app with all the results across several areas for me to wade through.
OK, rant over. I'm sure many people actually like the new way, and that's fine. But is there any way to restore the old way without downgrading the OS?
in windows 7 when we click on start menu and serach a program , we can drag that into desktop or other ways.
but in charm bar in win 8 how can we do that after searching?
I want to press start key and search my software but when I do this all of files in my documents appear in results. How to set default search only in softwares and control panel?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI thought that Windows 7 search was bad until I started trying to search for my many videos in my win 8 laptop. I even used KIND:= VIDEOS but the search came up empty???? This frustration never used to happen with win XP. I tried all manner of searches and although I have hundreds of videos still the search could not find a single one. Any third party search that is at least as good as XPs? I often do searches and need to use wildcards because of the plethora of files I have. If possible I would prefer a free search application.
I use the excellent Classic Shell. With my fast booting win 8 (fast booting is the only positive thing about win 8 I have encountered so far).
How to put the link on the desktop so that I can get to them any time.

When I enter update or program it doesn't find Windows Update and Uninstaller anymore.
I realised you cannot search your computer with Windows Search disabled in Windows 8/8.1 Metro, I have looked for the entry in the Windows Features / Services but could not find it. (I previously turned it off, now I cannot see the entry).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was working on desktop mode and suddenly my screen went black. After about 4 seconds everything returned to normal but when I went to the Start screen all of my application tiles were missing. Except for Desktop & Store tiles, all the others had disappeared. I tried to search the missing apps and pin it to Start but it cannot be found. They wont even show in All apps.
I don't think the apps are deleted because from desktop I can open image/audio files with Photos and Music app.
Not sure if the problem maybe a result of me accidently changing the AppData folder to visible a couple of minutes earlier.
I have bought a new laptop with win 8.1. ( I would have preferred Win 7 but it only came with win 8.) This laptop is being dedicated as a paperless file storage system. I scan all my paperwork to PDF files and store in folders.
I have been trying to find a way to be able to search these PDF files, the only way I have found was to add words in the file tags. I can search OK in Win 7 but the tags do not appear in win 8.1.
Trying to find files.
A few steps
Index Locations - Add or Remove - Windows 7 Forums
1 go to your control panel
2 Click Indexing Settings/Options
3 Click Modify
4 Tick C drive
Then press OK.
Windows 8.1 upgrade. The "universal" search sucks. Control panel -disabled BING. But when I return to the search screen, and start typing, the default remains EVERYTHING. This excludes a lot of the paths FILES looks under.
Is there any way for Win 8.1 to default your search to FILES (not Everything, which excludes a lot of your index locations)?
This is my first computer with Windows 8. When I click on the search feature on the right hand sidebar, there is an icon/title for "Files" but none of my files are showing up. If I start saving files (Word Docs, PDFs, etc) on my computer, where do I save them so they show up in this feature?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to download some DLLs to use for my Paint Shop Pro program and I need to put them in my System 32 files, and I can't find System 32. I new at working with this Win 8. I received the 2 dlls in a zip folder. I opened them and saved in a folder in Documents. I tried to right click on extracted file to find the System 32 files that way, not there. I went to extract and tried to extract to, and tried to browse to System 32, but I just could not find the System 32. I saw Programs and Programs (68) but no System 32 .
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a lot of files who are stored into folders (~ 2-3K worth of folders with 2-20 files in each folder) and I need to search in each one to see if there are any files that are similar in name. None will be exactly the same so I need to only compare the first 10 characters and if there are 2 files that have the same characters, then I need to have them displayed so I can decide if I should delete one. The problem with commercial duplicate detectors is they match the entire name or the CRC of a file which in this case will be different.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with how to use Agent Ransack to search and then add files to Dropbox.
I wanted to make a test folder to try the process on so I didn't have to delete them afterwards, and I found that I don't know any way to add a folder to the Send to option on the right click menu.
If you use "Send to to the desktop" it creates a shortcut, the option to send to Dropbox is there, installed when I installed Dropbox.
But what if I want to create a new location and have it show on the Send To menu?
Is there a way to do that?
Since I turned on a new computer, SEARCH function is not working anywhere.
I can't enter the search mode in Explorer (CTRL+F or WIN+F does simply nothing) and when I go to Start menu screen and start typing, nothing happens. When I'm in Start menu and go to search it gives me no results no matter what I type - it just says: This app can't be searched. (as you can see below).
I'm now running the windows 8 64 bit OS, and logged by a Microsoft account.
Now I am doing some work using Visual Studio and encouter some problems about the PATH variable.
1. Under current Microsoft account, I cannot see the full PATH variable neither in CMD or the Environment Variables dialog, the figures below shows the current view:
This is my current PATH
and, of course, I set it under system variables.
Well, this path works fine in command line executing, but in visual studio, it doesn't work.
2. So, lets see what I have in visual studio (run as administrator):
Code:
System.Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("path");
"C:Windowssystem32;C:Windows;C:WindowsSystem32Wbem;C:WindowsSystem32
WindowsPowerShellv1.0;C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server110ToolsBinn;
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server110ToolsBinn;C:Program
[Code]....
If you're willing to look at the text above, you'll find that this "PATH" is totally different with the one we set in Environment Variables dialog or get from the CMD.
I want to use some executable files in "d:commonin" with my web application hosted by IIS8, but I found that the web application could not find the executable files in "d:commonin", which should exist in "PATH"
Well, though I can just put the executable files into system32,
My "c" drive is starting to get full mostly because of a very large music collection. My friend said"simple, just put everything on "d". I think I should have gotten an external drive. Anyhow, now when I go to listen to a playlist song on media player, I get blue dots with an "i"in them and a message saying that the media player can't find the file. I tried changing the file location for the media player to"d"drive, but it would not let me (suggestion from same friend who said "mine works fine in "d" drive. Should I move everything back or get an external drive or is there a way to make this work. Asus Notebook a45x ,Windows 8,Media player version unknown.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 search function ...
I have a bunch of text files and I need to search for the following string for example within the files:
now()
What I need to do to search for this string?
It seems like Windows 8 ignores just about all non-alphanumeric characters when searching.
If I can't search within files for a simple string like the above I'm screwed!
My file search is not finding files which I know are there, including files that I find and then try a search to see if windows eight can also find them. I have tried all the solutions' offered by googling 'windows 8 not finding file' such as the troubleshooter . One suggestion was to change the location of where to search to 'everywhere' but this option is greyed out.
