1 go to your control panel
2 Click Indexing Settings/Options
3 Click Modify
4 Tick C drive
Then press OK.
I want to press start key and search my software but when I do this all of files in my documents appear in results. How to set default search only in softwares and control panel?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI figured out how to search but Windows 8.1 stopped searching for files. I type a word in the window and nothing happens after I hit enter.
I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
This is my first computer with Windows 8. When I click on the search feature on the right hand sidebar, there is an icon/title for "Files" but none of my files are showing up. If I start saving files (Word Docs, PDFs, etc) on my computer, where do I save them so they show up in this feature?

I have a bunch of text files and I need to search for the following string for example within the files:
now()
What I need to do to search for this string?
It seems like Windows 8 ignores just about all non-alphanumeric characters when searching.
If I can't search within files for a simple string like the above I'm screwed!
I have bought a new laptop with win 8.1. ( I would have preferred Win 7 but it only came with win 8.) This laptop is being dedicated as a paperless file storage system. I scan all my paperwork to PDF files and store in folders.
I have been trying to find a way to be able to search these PDF files, the only way I have found was to add words in the file tags. I can search OK in Win 7 but the tags do not appear in win 8.1.
Windows 8 search doesn't find files which I know are on my PC as I can navigate to them.
I have indexing on. I search by opening my computer and typing the search name in the top right box.
Windows 8.1 upgrade. The "universal" search sucks. Control panel -disabled BING. But when I return to the search screen, and start typing, the default remains EVERYTHING. This excludes a lot of the paths FILES looks under.
Is there any way for Win 8.1 to default your search to FILES (not Everything, which excludes a lot of your index locations)?
Running window 8 pro and cant search for files from the search charm. apps and settings searches work great.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter updating to 8.1, windows search is slow, even though I disabled Bing and I don't have extra locations in the index, and it doesn't find files even though they are in subfolders of My Documents. This problem is very outstanding with Word files.
I tried deleting the Data folder, and rebuilding the index, but to no avail. I need a way to search for text within files, so the "Everything" app does not seem to be the solution. I am trying out AgentRansack right now, and it does work, but it is slow and uses up almost all the CPU when it is searching.
I was messing around with how to use Agent Ransack to search and then add files to Dropbox.
I wanted to make a test folder to try the process on so I didn't have to delete them afterwards, and I found that I don't know any way to add a folder to the Send to option on the right click menu.
If you use "Send to to the desktop" it creates a shortcut, the option to send to Dropbox is there, installed when I installed Dropbox.
But what if I want to create a new location and have it show on the Send To menu?
Is there a way to do that?
Since I turned on a new computer, SEARCH function is not working anywhere.
I can't enter the search mode in Explorer (CTRL+F or WIN+F does simply nothing) and when I go to Start menu screen and start typing, nothing happens. When I'm in Start menu and go to search it gives me no results no matter what I type - it just says: This app can't be searched. (as you can see below).
My file search is not finding files which I know are there, including files that I find and then try a search to see if windows eight can also find them. I have tried all the solutions' offered by googling 'windows 8 not finding file' such as the troubleshooter . One suggestion was to change the location of where to search to 'everywhere' but this option is greyed out.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure how far reaching this is but I just noticed that when I select a folder and type a file name in the search bar on the right of the address bar, files are found on my backup drive, which is attached by USB to the PC, this drive is attached because it contains other partitions for file storage.
The folder in this case was on the desktop and it shows that it is on C: Drive, but files were found on the H: Drive which is where I run my backup to.
When I un-attach the H drive the files found do not respond to left or right click.
Windows 8 search refuses to search items in my control panel. For example, if I tap the windows key and type "power options" or "Sound" I get nothing. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to work as it's mentioned in many of Microsoft's own documents as the easiest way to navigate to these settings.
Other searches are working, including files on secondary drives, etc.
I would like to replace Bing search and use Google search when I open the IE app in Windows 8.1. Is this possible?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo, I go into a folder and look at all the files and folders. In the upper right is the search box. I can type in the name of a folder within that folder that search should have no problem finding, and it can't find anything.
The search feature appears to work normally when I mouseover to the right of the screen, that menu pops up, and you type in what you want to look (the thing that searches apps and control panel and everything in Win8).
Recently I noticed when I go to use the search in Windows 8 it crashes after a few letters are typed and goes back to the start screen.

It is random too some things work like cmd, word, pc settings and things like change screen settings or something that deals with directly changing a setting without actually going to the control panel or pc settings first doesn't click.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am not able to do a search in Windows 8 on my Computer for documents. For instance. Searching for a PDF document that is saved under the title "Lanolin". I type in "La" in the search and get a number of documents but not Lanolin. I type the full Name and get no results. I Close the search function and I am looking right at the document that the search tells me is not there. Is there something else that one must do so that the search function functions?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running my Windows 8 system from a 125GB SSD with all my music, movies etc. on a 1TB partitioned SATA drive. My libraries are all set up to point to the different partitions and they are also included in my indexing options.
I'm having a problem with searching within my libraries at the moment. My Music is not returning any results when I search directly within the library, yet when I search my C: drive the files are displayed (with their paths showing their correct paths e.g. M:My MusicBeastie Boys.....)
I am trying to be able to see CR2 files (RAW photo files from Canon) as thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. I am using Windows 8.
Microsoft's codec pack (Download: Microsoft Camera Codec Pack - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details) does not work for Windows 8. When I am trying to install it, I get an error message mentioning that I can use Windows 8 Update function, but doesn't give any more information on how to do this exactly.
Neither the start screen nor the search feature within Explorer will return any results if the files I want to look for are on my secondary HDD. This is a bit of a problem as all of my documents, pictures, videos, downloads etc are on this secondary drive.
I can even go into the documents library and search using Explorer, and it still won't find anything that I search for.
My PC has Windows 8 Pro 64 bits installed and when I open Computer folder or any other folder says "folder is empty" and Search process starts, showing the progress green bar but will never stop. I need to use Task Manager to stop the search.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently, my metro search hasn't been working. I usually go to the metro GUI and search for defrag, and click the "Defragment and optimise your drives". But, for some reason, when I click it, nothing happens, this also happens with many other system related programs like device manager, sound etc. I always have to use control panel now to use these programs. Other programs seem to work fine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI thought that Windows 7 search was bad until I started trying to search for my many videos in my win 8 laptop. I even used KIND:= VIDEOS but the search came up empty???? This frustration never used to happen with win XP. I tried all manner of searches and although I have hundreds of videos still the search could not find a single one. Any third party search that is at least as good as XPs? I often do searches and need to use wildcards because of the plethora of files I have. If possible I would prefer a free search application.
I use the excellent Classic Shell. With my fast booting win 8 (fast booting is the only positive thing about win 8 I have encountered so far).
When i play games or do other full screen stuff, and when i press alt+tab to go to desktop, it shows "search pane" and opens me charm bar with search bar only in it... I have classic shell installed, i have disabled all that broken metro stuff, from hot corners, charm bar, to start screen, but that search bar just doesnt go away, how to completely remove it ?

Whenever I use the seach box (I mean the one in explorer, upper right hand) I get suggestions of what to search, basicly it's just the history of my previous searches. I guess I must be allergic because I always get itchy when it gets to logging and recording history by windows (or google, or yahoo, or iOS, or Android, or whatever)
In windows 7 there's a registry hack that disables the recording of the searches and so it disables the search suggestions. When I google I only find articles that explain how to disable bing searches; needless to say I did that already.
Is there a way to disable the recording of the search history; or a way to at least disable the search suggestions?
I dont't have to reinstall all my system because the snappy search that i loved so much in windows 8 does not longer works, it takes ages now (already disabled internet search).
Is there some tweak to restore the "search" efficiency ?
