When I search everywhere for example device manager, the icon shows up on the sidebar but when i click it nothing happens even if i hold it. It is random too some things work like cmd, word, pc settings and things like change screen settings or something that deals with directly changing a setting without actually going to the control panel or pc settings first doesn't click.
View 1 RepliesI used to be able to do a search and it would stay up as I checked each document to see if that was what I was looking for. Now when I do a search and click a document that comes up, the search disappears and I have to start all over again each time. This is frustrating because I often go looking through my collection of music notation files and have many to go through.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 search refuses to search items in my control panel. For example, if I tap the windows key and type "power options" or "Sound" I get nothing. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to work as it's mentioned in many of Microsoft's own documents as the easiest way to navigate to these settings.
Other searches are working, including files on secondary drives, etc.
When I single click it's actually doing a double click. It does this most of the time but not every click. Could my mouse be going bad?

I ran the upgrade to 8.1 but I still have a problem with my cursor wanting to "hover click" on links or browser tabs, as well as being stuck in the down position, when I'm not even pressing on the touchpad left button. I end up selecting an entire region of stuff while moving the cursor across the screen.
I can't figure out what to change or configure in Control Panel, or is it in the Dell Touchpad configuration utility?
In Control Panel/Ease of Access Center/Make Your Mouse Easier To Use I have unchecked "Activate a Window by hovering over it with a mouse." Still happens.
I would like to replace Bing search and use Google search when I open the IE app in Windows 8.1. Is this possible?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, I go into a folder and look at all the files and folders. In the upper right is the search box. I can type in the name of a folder within that folder that search should have no problem finding, and it can't find anything.
The search feature appears to work normally when I mouseover to the right of the screen, that menu pops up, and you type in what you want to look (the thing that searches apps and control panel and everything in Win8).
Windows 8 is new and I previously used windows vista. I downloaded my games to an external drive. When I use external drive I display all games on the drive. I would like to drag 1 game to the desktop to be able to play at leisure. When I click and drag to desktop it copies the game, then when I want to drag game back to external drive it tries to copy again...I would like to pull off external to desktop, then put it back on external when complete. Is it possible ?? Do I have to copy game to desktop ??

I found a site that shows how to add it via regedit, but I couldn't get it working on my machine.
Windows 8 but none of them relate to my specific problem. When I click on apps they do not initialize. it is not all apps either. the store does not work and i am unable to access anything from the store (including updating to 8.1).
I think it may have something to do with AVG. It was very difficult to uninstall AVG and there are still two dll files that will not uninstall. (avgsea & avgsysa). I think it screwed up the registry somehow. Windows firewall does not seem to work either. i am unable to get into Win firewall and reset to recommended settings.
I wonder what could be wrong.

I am not able to do a search in Windows 8 on my Computer for documents. For instance. Searching for a PDF document that is saved under the title "Lanolin". I type in "La" in the search and get a number of documents but not Lanolin. I type the full Name and get no results. I Close the search function and I am looking right at the document that the search tells me is not there. Is there something else that one must do so that the search function functions?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running my Windows 8 system from a 125GB SSD with all my music, movies etc. on a 1TB partitioned SATA drive. My libraries are all set up to point to the different partitions and they are also included in my indexing options.
I'm having a problem with searching within my libraries at the moment. My Music is not returning any results when I search directly within the library, yet when I search my C: drive the files are displayed (with their paths showing their correct paths e.g. M:My MusicBeastie Boys.....)
I recently upgraded to windows 8, and for some reason within the control panel, I click any options that have the admin shield icon next to them, when i click them, absolutely nothing happens.
And I can't delete any folders from programdata/program files/x86 because it "requires administration action".
Also when removing items from the "uninstall program list" it requires administration action, i say yes, and nothing happens.
Yet, running program's as admin from the desktop, seems to work.
I was writing an email and randomly my fairly new and perfectly working laptop kept freezing and showing Disk 100% in Task Manager so I restarted. After that my laptop is stuck on "automatic repair mode" whenever I power on and none of the options work. I have the options to "Continue to win 8" "use a device" "troubleshoot" or "turn off my pc" NONE of these options are working! If I click anything it just freezes.
How can I recover some important files I had on my desktop? I didn't have any partitions! I'm not able to boot with Ubuntu, win 7, or norton ghost DVDs. I even set the DVD drive to boot first in BIOS.

I've been dabbling with Windows 8.1 a little bit, and noticed something missing from it--at least, it's missing on my computer. I'd like to know if I am the only person experiencing this.
The problem is quite simple: The right-click menu for the Explorer taskbar icon has disappeared, and it doesn't let me close my open Explorer windows.
I have desktop shortcut icons for the C drive, and two external drives. Also, I have a shortcut icon for my USB flash drive, which I usually keep plugged in for backup.
I can have several Explorer windows open by clicking these icons. They appear stacked in the taskbar. (See diagram below.) If I have only one Explorer window open, the menu will have a Close Window option. If two or more windows are open, it will say Close All Windows.
This menu, and these options, seem to have disappeared with Windows 8.1 Preview.
I have an interesting issue in the windows 8 metro menu. When I right click an icon you normaly get a properties bar pop up on the bottom where you can change tile size, pin to start etc. This bar is no longer appearing.
View 10 Replies View RelatedSince 02.01.2013 my Windows 8 is rebooting without a warning, and this is happening every morning when I come to work, I've noticed that Windows will restart when I double click a song in Winamp, once it happened when I tried to open a e-mail in Outlook, bust mostly it happens with Winamp.
I have all Windows updates installed, installed latest Winamp version still when I double click or drag&drop a file in Winamp, Windows will restart.
There is no dump file, the system only restarts without BSOD.
Neither the start screen nor the search feature within Explorer will return any results if the files I want to look for are on my secondary HDD. This is a bit of a problem as all of my documents, pictures, videos, downloads etc are on this secondary drive.
I can even go into the documents library and search using Explorer, and it still won't find anything that I search for.
My PC has Windows 8 Pro 64 bits installed and when I open Computer folder or any other folder says "folder is empty" and Search process starts, showing the progress green bar but will never stop. I need to use Task Manager to stop the search.

But, for some reason, when I click it, nothing happens, this also happens with many other system related programs like device manager, sound etc. I always have to use control panel now to use these programs. Other programs seem to work fine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI thought that Windows 7 search was bad until I started trying to search for my many videos in my win 8 laptop. I even used KIND:= VIDEOS but the search came up empty???? This frustration never used to happen with win XP. I tried all manner of searches and although I have hundreds of videos still the search could not find a single one. Any third party search that is at least as good as XPs? I often do searches and need to use wildcards because of the plethora of files I have. If possible I would prefer a free search application.
I use the excellent Classic Shell. With my fast booting win 8 (fast booting is the only positive thing about win 8 I have encountered so far).
When i play games or do other full screen stuff, and when i press alt+tab to go to desktop, it shows "search pane" and opens me charm bar with search bar only in it... I have classic shell installed, i have disabled all that broken metro stuff, from hot corners, charm bar, to start screen, but that search bar just doesnt go away, how to completely remove it ?

I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
I'm still new to windows 8.1. Whenever I use the seach box (I mean the one in explorer, upper right hand) I get suggestions of what to search, basicly it's just the history of my previous searches. I guess I must be allergic because I always get itchy when it gets to logging and recording history by windows (or google, or yahoo, or iOS, or Android, or whatever)
In windows 7 there's a registry hack that disables the recording of the searches and so it disables the search suggestions. When I google I only find articles that explain how to disable bing searches; needless to say I did that already.
Is there a way to disable the recording of the search history; or a way to at least disable the search suggestions?
