Drag Files From Charm To Desktop?
Sep 30, 2012in windows 7 when we click on start menu and serach a program , we can drag that into desktop or other ways.
but in charm bar in win 8 how can we do that after searching?

All Apps And Charm Bar Missing From Desktop
Mar 8, 2014It is a HP Pavilion. When I power up the machine it opens to "what I presume is the Desktop" OK. However there is only the clock, Wi-Fi and Batt/ACicon on the screen. There are no Apps showing, no Charm Bar and no keyboard shortcuts work at all. If I click any place on the screen it opens to a gmail sign in page and that is it.
I probably should also mention that I get nothing hovering my mouse in the lower right corner. Now the clincher is that this is his wife's machine and she can't remember the PW for this gmail account. So I can't even sign into it tosee if that even brings me anyplace beyond the gmail account.
One thing I did notice was that an automatic update did download itself while I was writing this. I shut down and let them load and restart hoping maybe all would be well on the restart. Not that lucky.
Did I mention he did not receive a disc with themachine nor was he in tuned to create a Rescue Disc. How to get him out of this jam.

Mar 7, 2013Windows 8 is new and I previously used windows vista. I downloaded my games to an external drive. When I use external drive I display all games on the drive. I would like to drag 1 game to the desktop to be able to play at leisure. When I click and drag to desktop it copies the game, then when I want to drag game back to external drive it tries to copy again...I would like to pull off external to desktop, then put it back on external when complete. Is it possible ?? Do I have to copy game to desktop ??

Can't Drag Files From Explorer Into 64-bit Programs
Apr 17, 2013I've been having this issue and trying to wrap my head around it for a couple weeks, and I've had this new laptop less than a month. Just as I was posting this, I realized that it seems to be specifically 64-bit programs.
Specifically, the problem is that when I try to drag a file from Explorer into a program that I know is able to load it from drag-and-drop, all I get is the "no" pointer, the circle with the line. All the programs I've tested would let you drag files onto them just fine on my older Windows 7 laptop.
Some of the specific programs this is happening in:
Microsoft Office 2010 (seemingly the whole suite is acting like this, I tested Word and Powerpoint)
Paint.NET 3.5.10
Sony Vegas 12.0
Waterfox 18.0.1
I can File>Open files in these programs just fine, but dragging to them from Explorer would be miles more convenient. I've tested the files I've tried dragging. They drag fine into Notepad, they drag fine into Foobar2000, IrfanView, Notepad++, all operating as 32-bit.
Now I WAS having the same problem with Audacity and Skype, which is why I didn't catch the pattern of them all being x64 programs at first (since I have 32-bit versions of both), but that was happening because they were being run as Administrator, which is an issue I'd also like to try and resolve. I don't understand why running as Admin should prevent me from dragging files into open windows of them.
Upgraded To Windows 8.1 - Cannot Drag Files
Oct 18, 2013I updated to windows 8.1 yesterday and now I can't drag anything. I have tried everything I think, but it won't drag..Restore would probably work but I don't want to that.

Feb 18, 2014I am trying to organize the files on my system, and am consistently butting heads against this problem. It always seems to be the last file I highlight. In other words.. I have two directories open on the screen, and am simply looking to drag files/folders from one directory to another. To do this, you almost always have to highlight the folder you want to move, and doing this seems to put a lock on that folder. If I highlight more folders, it seems to be ok, except for the last one I highlight will always fail to copy.
Any way to prevent windows from locking files in this way?

Jun 20, 2014After I drag and drop image files onto dvd they will not stay on dvd after I restart pc. Dvd player is in usb mode. Once I fill up disc I will close it. What is causing this, possibly windows defender?

Mar 16, 2014I have Windows 8 [haven't upgraded to Windows 8.1 yet] and the past few days I am having ALL kinds of problems.
[1] My ability to drag and drop files and folders is no longer working.
[2] Things are opening on one click, even though I disabled that feature and set it for double clicking only
[3] I can't grab and move windows that are open, it won't allow me to do that.
[4] I also just noticed that a lot of programs that have a drop box, when I click on them, it doesn't drop the box, it just blinks down and then off...so you can't select anything.
I'm not getting any error messages. I tried the two things listed as far as registry editing...but the one that shows the drag and drop isn't even in my registry editor anymore....so I can't change it from 0 to 1 -- it's no longer there.
Also I tried to follow another suggestion [thinking it might be a virus] which stated to shut down windows restore first. When I did that it deleted all previous restorations so I can't even go ahead and try to restore.
Lastly, I do have an ongoing antivirus and spyware...both of which I run on a daily basis....

Mar 24, 2014I just built a new Windows 8.1 64 bit with Asrock Haswell Extreme 11 ac motherboard. Using old copy of Audition 1.5 and Newest copy of Mediamonkey 4.1. I can't drag and drop mp3's into the programs. The only way I can get them in is through File/Open. I know that the Audition is very old, but I didn't have a problem with it on XP. I thought it was only the Audition problem but now that I have the newest version of Mediamonkey on it the problem also affects this one too. Is there anything I can do. I'm sure I have administrator set as privileges.

Oct 18, 2013A lot of the times I swipe from right to left and the charms bar pops up, when this happens I usually accidentally select something from the bar, then I get angry have to click desktop every time.
I google searched it and I found nothing useful. I already tried turning it off through classic shell, edited registrar keys, but neither of them work.
Am I the only one who sees this as a bad flaw design?
Charm Bars Suddenly Disappear
Mar 29, 2014Out of nowhere my charm bars will disappear and even the right-click on the windows symbol on the bottom left corner doesn't work anymore. I then have to ctrl+alt+del and sign out then sign in again then things magically go back to normal.

May 17, 2014I am doing a demo for my brothers highschool and need to LOCK DOWN windows 8.
First off I need to completely disable the right charm menu. The menu if you were to swipe left from the right hand side of a monitor.
Then the task bar if you were to swipe from the left hand side of a monitor. The thing is I can use taskkill /im /f whatever.exe to kill the process but the recent app sticks in the menu.
Windows 8 Laptop - Charm Bar Doesn't Work?
Dec 31, 2012I am live on my Windows 8 lappy having connected to this machine using RDC on my Win7 Boot Camp installation. I ended up on the Windows 8 Desktop since the Windows 8 machine was on the Desktop when I connected via RDC. The charm bar doesn't work (or at least I can't get it to work)--which probably doesn't come as a big surprise. I am trying to figure out how to navigate between the Windows 8 Desktop and Metro, including the charms. How to get this basic task done? The main problem is that I have not yet figured out key combinations that will do the job.
By way of explanation, my Windows 8 (older) HP lappy is a bit clunky compared to a MacBook Pro (MBP). I was hoping to use Windows 8 via the MBP because it is a much nicer machine from which to work. I first tried to get the desired navigation going via Mt. Lion/RDC, but had no luck. I thought things might work better if I connected to the Windows 8 machine through my MBP Win 7 Boot Camp installation using RDC, but I still am having no luck with the basic navigation I am trying to accomplish.
PS I am not interested in running Windows 8 virtually on either MBP installation.
PSS Perhaps I need to do more preparation on the Windows 8 lappy, e.g., make a shortcut or a taskbar pin that will take me to Metro, etc.
Classic Shell Doesn't Actually Disable Charm Bar

But, this program doesnt actualy disable them, it just visually removes things, i still can open charm bar with shortcuts, like with touchpad - i have to cross though touchpad a little bit from the very right to left, and charm bar opens ... So, how to disable these shortcuts ?

Apr 5, 2013I just got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and I've lost track of the Start page (I guess they call it Metro), the one with Start up on the left and all the tiles, including the one for Desktop...gone.
Also I don't get the Charm Bar with a swipe, or any other movement for that matter. It opens up to a page with 4 tiles: Weather, Media Hub, Music Hub and Game Hub. I can tap to a page with Apps, a bunch of apps, but no Start Page or Charm Bar.
Change 8.1 Search Charm To Behave Like 8.0 Version
Nov 27, 2013I'm sure Microsoft thought they were solving problems by completely changing the search functionality in Windows 8.1. However, I can't possibly be the only person who thinks they've ruined one of the best features of Windows 8, can I?
Before the upgrade, I could start typing in the Start screen, then select where I wanted to search (for example, I could click an app in the list to search within that app, or select files or settings etc.). Furthermore, apps would make use of the search charm, instead of having a search box on-screen all the time. This all made sense - a beautifully simple way to access the function in all apps. In 8.1 there are search boxes stuck on the screen in various locations. Two examples are: Mail, with the search box at the top of the list of emails on the left side, and Wikipedia, with the search box over on the right.
This elegant search function has been overhauled for the worse, IMO. Now, to search the Wikipedia app (for e.g.), I have to first load the app, and then search with the search box, which has added a step. And the universal search now brings up an annoying separate app with all the results across several areas for me to wade through.
OK, rant over. I'm sure many people actually like the new way, and that's fine. But is there any way to restore the old way without downgrading the OS?
Gray X On Some Desktop Files?

Desktop Fills Up With Files And Folders?
Oct 19, 2013Something is causing all My Documents files and folders to show up on my Desktop (along with what is normally there).They are not shortcuts.Properties show that they are actually located in My Desktop folder, but in My Documents, where they belong.
How I got to this state:
When I originally installed Win8Pro, I used sysprep to move Users to D drive, at OOBE.
I tried to reverse this, so I could upgrade to 8.1, but sysprep fails to get me to audit mode.
So I booted into Safe Mode with a new temp admin acct, and copied users back to C drive.
Then I used regedit to point all the profiles back to C drive.
Rebooted. Logged into my main account.
I then used Properties on all my Profile movable folders to move that content back to D.
All well and good until my Desktop fills up with files and folders, that aren't really supposed to display there.
They work the same and point to the same files if I access them normally through my account icon.
I've been looking for copy errors, haven't found anything yet.

I have copied some documents from my old laptop onto my new one and have notice that most of the files are now all mixed up.
