Gray X On Some Desktop Files?
Apr 6, 2013I have started seeing gray x's covering a corner of some but not all desktop file icons. The files seem to operate. Is this a problem or identifying something about these files?

Maintenance :: Upgraded To 8.1 - Backup And Restore Center Broken / Gray Icons
Oct 22, 2013I upgraded to 8.1 this past weekend and it went just fine, however now the the Backup and Restore Center and Create Recovery Disks options are busted. Both icons appear in my app list as generic grey document icons, and if I click either of them I'm brought to the desktop and then...nothing.
I use BRC for my daily backups so I'm obviously concerned that it's not working. I tried searching for a way to reinstall these programs, but as they're part of Windows I wasn't surprised to not find anything. BRC was working fine for me prior to the upgrade so I'd hate to have to buy a third party solution now.
Dell :: Windows 8.1 Stuck On Gray Wait Screen - Auto Repair And System Restore Won't Work
Jun 8, 2014I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 15R 7537 that came with Windows 8. Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 8.1. Everything seemed to work fine after the upgrade. I shut down and re-booted several times with no issues. When I turned the computer on as usual today, I got the log in screen, then it briefly went to the desktop, then came a gray screen that blocks 99% of the desk top. This gray screen says "please wait" and has a cancel button at the bottom. It hangs forever and the cancel button doesn't work. It gives no other information.
I read several threads on the Microsoft Windows forum and this seems to be a common problem. How to boot using the Windows 8 recovery media disk that came with the Dell computer. I selected Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Automatic Repair. I got a message that it couldn't do an automatic repair, so that didn't work. Next I tried System Restore, but I got a message that there were no restore points available from which to restore. Just to clarify - the Recovery Media Disk I have from Dell is for Windows 8 - not 8.1 - so maybe that's the problem.
The computer is totally worthless the way it is now, so unless there is some fix for the hanging gray screen in Windows 8.1, I would be happy just to reload the original Windows 8 Operating System. At least that worked.
Drag Files From Charm To Desktop?

Desktop Fills Up With Files And Folders?
Oct 19, 2013Something is causing all My Documents files and folders to show up on my Desktop (along with what is normally there).They are not shortcuts.Properties show that they are actually located in My Desktop folder, but in My Documents, where they belong.
How I got to this state:
When I originally installed Win8Pro, I used sysprep to move Users to D drive, at OOBE.
I tried to reverse this, so I could upgrade to 8.1, but sysprep fails to get me to audit mode.
So I booted into Safe Mode with a new temp admin acct, and copied users back to C drive.
Then I used regedit to point all the profiles back to C drive.
Rebooted. Logged into my main account.
I then used Properties on all my Profile movable folders to move that content back to D.
All well and good until my Desktop fills up with files and folders, that aren't really supposed to display there.
They work the same and point to the same files if I access them normally through my account icon.
I've been looking for copy errors, haven't found anything yet.
Can't Move Files From Desktop Into My Documents?
Aug 10, 2013I have some files and shortcuts on my desktop, and I am trying to move them into my documents. When I refresh my documents they just disappear and they do not reappear in documents or the desktop. Only when I restart or log out do they reappear on the desktop. Whats causing this?

Feb 10, 2014When I delete either the original or the duplicate, the other file is deleted as well and, when I restore the single example from the recycle bin, both are restored.
My own solution is:-
1) Drag and drop the original file onto its duplicate into the picture folder.
2) Stop creating files on the desktop.
However, I wonder if there is a better way of doing this that would allow me to create files on the desktop again. I often use the desktop to convert RAW photo files, prior to filing them in the picture folder, which may have something to do with this.

May 6, 2014I want to move files from my old Desktop (Windows 2000 Server) to my new Laptop (Windows 8.1 Pro).
I have a Router, an Ethernet Cable and a Crossover Cable.
Note: The Router (older Netgear) always shows up as "Unidentified network". However, I can successfully share the Laptop's Internet Connection to it via the Ethernet port. It is joined to the HomeGroup and is a Private network.
The Router's IP Address is 192.168.1.1 which I can connect to using the Smartphone over Wi-Fi.

Network / Sharing :: When Log On To HTPC From Desktop - Unable To Access The Files
Mar 1, 2013On my home network, I have my desktop, my HTPC (wired) and my wife's laptop (Wifi). The desktop and HTPC are bth running Win 8 pro. The laptop is running Win 7. All are 64 it.
Invariably I try to log onto my HTPC from my desktop and it says that I am unable to access the files. I then open up network and sharing center to check on the network password only to find that is has changed itself somehow. Even after I reset the password on both the HTPC and the desktop. I still cannot access my shared files on the HTPC from the desktop. The only way to share files is to get them from the HTPC which for some reason lets me access my desktop files.
The laptop is not really an issue. ONce I enter the new password I can access files on the desktop and print no problem. I guess the 2 issues are...
1) the random changing of the network password
2) the inability to access networked files FROM the desktop. The reverse seems to work flawlessly.....
Apps / Software :: Photoshop Elements 11 Very Slow To Open Files On Desktop
Apr 15, 2014Out of the blue today when I opened PSE 11 and then tried to use it to open a file on my Desktop, it went to sleep. Task Manager showed it "not-responding". Rebooting the computer did not work. After a couple of tries, I waited for 2-3 minutes and it then displayed files on the desktop. I switched the location it was searching, which was Desktop to my photo folder, and everything started working normally. Closed and restarted, and it was fine opening files from my Pictures folder. But, when I switched it to Desktop it went to sleep again for 2-3 minutes. At one point it got a message, which I forget exactly, but basically saying it could not find the file it was searching for??
It seems unique to the Desktop location. The Desktop is part of the operating system (Windows 8.1), and on a SSD. The Pictures folder is on my HDDs. I don't recall making any changes to the setup.
Summary of the symptoms:
1. Only is slow with File, Open, or File, Open As, when the location is the Desktop
2. Operating system (8.1) is on a SSD. Normal file folder is on HDD.
3. Same actions when location is Pictures on HDD is normal.
4. Process Explorer does not seem to detect any activity going on during the "sleeping" mode

Feb 9, 2014I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.
Desktop Icon Resolution - Desktop Icons Are Out Of Focus And Blurry
Jun 2, 2013My laptop has an HD screen, 1920x1080 to be exact. Some of my desktop icons are out of focus and blurry, but others aren't. At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.

It booted up, got to the 4 blue boxes for windows and expected to load my desktop but it didnt. I tried using gparted live and then install windows 8 again, saw the 4 blue boxes again and loaded devices and then no desktop again.

Jun 5, 2014After nuking my computer, due to a fatal user profile issue that could not be recovered from, i reinstalled windows 8.1 from scratch. Everything should be great. However after 1-2 weeks, I've started to experience a new issue that is driving me nuts. The computer is hanging at two points.
(1)The first spot is upon boot, within the desktop. the mouse just spins, and I can't access anything. after 2-4 minutes, the computer reboots on it's own
(2)It occasionally hangs or is slow going through the bios upon boot. It's also hanged at "verifying DMI pool data"
To recap, I cannot access any programs or system functions at this time. I've tried to restore from a point of time, but that action failed.
how to determine if the issue is hard drive vs. bios. in terms of setup, I have a SSD drive where the OS is installed, I also have a separate hard drive.
Clearing Icons From Desktop
Apr 26, 2014I have received a new laptop from HP to replace my original purchase which turned out to have a defective keyboard. I am in the process of clearing my personal info/history from the defective computer before returning it to HP.
I have deleted all my files and have uninstalled all the programs that I installed. I also deleted the items shown in the "Desktop" directory (which were the shortcuts I created). That may have been a mistake because now I am attempting to clear the shortcut icons from the desktop, with no success! Since the files to which the shortcuts pointed have been deleted, I get a message telling me the file is no longer located in the "Desktop" directory (no kidding, I deleted it!). I can't delete them or even rename them or delete their names. I realize now that I should have deleted the shortcut icons before clearing the "Desktop" directory.
These shortcuts don't link to anything, but because their names give an indication of my personal interests, I would prefer to have them removed. I could reformat the drive, but I assume HP would like to get the machine back complete with all files that they originally supplied with it. I really don't want to do a restore and start over clearing my info.

Dec 31, 2013recently, I corrupted my explorer.exe while modifying the icons. I had a backup of the original explorer.exe, so I went into elevated command prompt via Ctrl + File > Run new task in Task manager (elevated command prompt). This worked, but for some reason, now when I go to my desktop, I have a black background.
Along with that problem, the desktop fades to black in one second if there is no activity on the desktop. If I open a window on the desktop, it wont fade to black. If I draw a big enough selection box with my mouse on the desktop with no window open, the desktop will stay open until I let the selection box go. When the desktop is black, I can still click and select my desktop icons (if I click in the right place).
I think this is the weirdest problem I've ever had with Windows, it can't be anything with drivers or it would do it with everything. So with what I just said "or it would do it with everything" I mean to say, everything else works perfectly fine, Apps, Startscreen, etc.
Pin Desktop Shortcut To The Taskbar

Desktop Icons Always Appear On Start Up?
Jan 14, 2014I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.
I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.
Scaling (DPI) Of Windows 8 Desktop Changes
Oct 14, 2013My "Change the size of all items" is set to smaller. This makes everything appear fine. However whenever I restart the PC, or turn on the PC, all of the desktop programs and cursor are incorrect (ie. everything bigger than it should be) on my left hand monitor. Changing the main display, or changing the resolution back and fro fixes the problem, but gets annoying after a while.
