View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from XP to Windows 8 and subsequently to 8.1 I'm having persistent problem with desktop icons disappearing. This happens when our PC has been on for around 10 minutes, regardless of whether the PC is active or not.
The second problem is the icons on the taskbar will not work correctly - only a very small window opens above each icon and it will NOT maximise. The only way to solve this I've found is to restart the PC but it's becoming more and more frequent ..
Under Windows 8, when I minimize a window it disappears completely? Have I somehow changed a setting for the actions of the minimize button? Task manager show the program running but nothing appears in the taskbar. All programs are doing this so it must be a Windows 8 setting?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI received a Toshiba Satellite Laptop (S855-S5377) for Christmas and it is running Windows 8. I started using it and it worked fine, but I started using Internet Explorer and the mouse froze, but I could still use my keyboard to get back to the start-page and move around with the up/down/left/right keys. My mouse was no where to be found on the start-page. I used the ctrl-alt-delete to log out, and then when the log-in screen came up my mouse reappeared and seemed to be working again.
I logged back in and my mouse worked for a few seconds, then disappeared. I did the same things over and over again a few times, and either the mouse was nowhere to be found from the get-go, or it worked for a bit then disappeared once I started doing things. I shut down, and restarted multiple times. If it is a Windows 8 problem I am very disappointing at the moment with the software.
I've just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 8 on a Dell Latitude D820, which went fine. But, after installing a new driver for the video card (Quadro NVS 120M), the Start Screen is not working anymore. As soon the mouse touches a tile, they all disappear and I'm left with only the background image.
I can go to the desktop by hitting Win+D and if I hit the Win key after some minutes the tiles are there again only to disappear as soon the mouse pointer touches them.
I've also discovered that I lose my right click capability until i log out/log back in.
Why my mail keeps disappearing i use the normal mail app in win 8.1 and i keep moving mail i want to keep to a private folder but although i check to make sure it is there at a later date it is not, I only use this folder to store mail that i want to keep so it is not me deleting them by mistake.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start my computer and I click on an icon (on the desktop or in the Start menu), the icon disappears and this error message shows up about a dozen times:"Could not find this item. This is no longer in C:...Verify this item's location." And that things (ex- documents, my computer icon, movie, song) go to Recycle Bin. And when i select bunch of file by pressing CTRL+A, then it shows option for delete automatically. I am using ASUS K46 Series laptop with windows 8.
In my thinking, there might be problem regarding DEL key. I thought that because when i press power button of my laptop instantly boot menu comes ( which come only by pressing DEL key normally). But DEL key looks like normal like other key. There is no tapped or go inside of DEL key.
USB drive constantly disappearing and not being recognized? My current solution is to delete drivers in device manager then wait until they load again. This is a temporary solution. I am using a VivoTab ME400C tablet pc with full win8 in a public environment as a kiosk and users are exporting data via the usb.

I installed Office 365 about a month ago and used it several times. Today I went to use Word and it is not there. It is not in the programs list in the uninstall programs. Then I started looking for the other programs in the suite and the only one that is there although not in the uninstall programs is excel which I attached to the task bar, but I can use the spreadsheets.
3 days ago I installed Lightroom 5 and it also has dissapeared. My husband has had the same problems with office.
It seems with the Microsoft apps (mail, people, chat etc) that if you right click and choose other options or change settings in the settings bar the buttons/icons disappear. Is this a software glitch or something else. See below.
If you notice with the above photo (store), this happened when I wanted to sort the results of my search. Not only did the buttons/icons disappear but also the rating information.
My System : I have two machines that share two monitors by the use of two KVMs. They both use Nviria GeForce vraphics cards (with twin DVI outputs).
One machine is Win 7 Pro X64 and the other is Win 8 Pro X64. Both have the latest Nvidia drivers. Both are full retail legal versions of the OS.
My Problem : When I switch between machines I usually lose one screen and it cannot be reactivated without a reboot. Sometimes the other screen reverts to its default resolution. This happens on every switch over with Win 8 and sometimes with Win 7 but not always.
I have discoverd that if I switch the 2nd screen forst and then the main KVM (which has the keyboard and mouse) then usually the Win 7 machine continues to see both screens. The Win 8 machine virtually always loses the primary screen (the mouse and keyboard attached to this KVM are unaffected and switch correctly always)
I suspect this might be an nvidia problem but short og buying a new graphics card I have no way of determining this.
I'm having a problem with certain full-screen apps and games disappearing from the taskbar. I can alt-tab to get back to them, however. I've found the problem affecting Hearthstone, XBMC, and Skyrim.
I'm running Windows 8.1 x64.
Having problem with a USB drive constantly disappearing and not being recognized?
My current solution is to delete drivers in device manager then wait until they load again. This is a temporary solution. I am using a VivoTab ME400C tablet pc with full Windows 8 in a public environment as a kiosk and users are exporting data via the usb. I cannot ask people to constantly delete drivers before they try an export to a pen drive.
There's this bugcheck that forces me to refresh install my Windows 8 installation. Everything was normal until I restarted my system and it takes longer time to boot. The screen stays black after boot logo disappearing, until I saw a BSOD.
Attached below is last and the only dump file generated while BSOD occured. I need to know what's the real cause so I can prevent it in the futures (this is like my third time to refresh install in less than a year...)
Note that I generated this diagnostic after refresh install so it might be irrelevant to crash dump attached...
When i choose the connection's icon from the task bar, to connect to wifi, the connection side bar appears for a brief instant and disappears. At the moment i can connect to the network in my home, since it is default, but anywhere else i cant choose a new network.
Same occurs when i try to display available networks from the network and sharing centre.
I made a workaround which is very cumbersome for a casual user.
1. command prompt, and listed and deleted the profiles, using the netsh wlan command
2. Network and sharing
3. Setup new connection or network
4. Manually connect to a wireless network
5. typed the credentials of the network, checked start this connection automatically box and apply.
I'm using Windows 8 x64, all updated, which had been working without problem for about 8 months now.
I noticed my internel card reader drives (9 pin USB header) kept disappearing and reappearing quickly, in both My Computer, and Device Manager. So I assumed it was dying and bought a new one, but it too did the same thing, so assumed it must be the USB connecter dying, and left it unplugged, and orderd an external card reader (yet to arrive).
Sadly my USB flash drives and USB hard drives started doing the same thing, front and back ports, these drives will disappear and reappear a few times then work as normal, weird thing is my USB printer, mouse, keyboard, and Sansa Clip+ work fine.
I tried testing in WinPE v4, and Linux (Ubuntu LiveCD) and everything seems to be working fine, including the internel card reader. So I reinstalled Windows 8 after trying fixes like uninstalling the USB Root entries in Device Manager, and messing with the USB power saving options in Windows, even though they're at the defaults and never caused problems before, but the internel card reader was doing the same thing again before even doing any updates, or installing drivers.
I have found a workaround for the reader, if I disable it within Device Manger before putting a card in, and then enabling the device it works, but once ejected it goes back to disappearing and reappearing again.
The PC is a Dell Inspiron 531.
I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.
My laptop has an HD screen, 1920x1080 to be exact. Some of my desktop icons are out of focus and blurry, but others aren't. At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy "Change the size of all items" is set to smaller. This makes everything appear fine. However whenever I restart the PC, or turn on the PC, all of the desktop programs and cursor are incorrect (ie. everything bigger than it should be) on my left hand monitor. Changing the main display, or changing the resolution back and fro fixes the problem, but gets annoying after a while.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIf you have skype, or evernote (for Windows 8 desktops) notice that when you near it to the edge, it "snaps" so to speak. THIS IS NOT THE SNAP where you snap to the right or to the left!
I am just lost as to how this came to be. Is this application-specific? I would very much prefer all my applications/windows to snap to the edge as they are.
My desktop is completely blank after doing a refresh on windows 8.1 keeping my files and settings.
I have rebuilt the icon cache and run sfc /scannow
There is no restore point because the system is refreshed.
It also works just pressing the windows key/opening the start screen and typing system properties remote then enter!
