Feb 9, 2014I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.
Desktop Icon Resolution - Desktop Icons Are Out Of Focus And Blurry
Jun 2, 2013My laptop has an HD screen, 1920x1080 to be exact. Some of my desktop icons are out of focus and blurry, but others aren't. At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.

Sep 17, 2014My problem is that when i try to boot to F11 Recovery Manager i get the "error 0xc0000225" message.
Here is how my partitions look -As you can see i have the Recovery partition there, it is actually 17.5GB in actual size. Here is a what the Recovery (D) folder looks like -In the "HP Recovery Manager" it also says on the left "Disabled: Recovery partition is removed" but on the right side it actually allows me to remove it, which doesn't make sense, this image will show you what i mean -
I actually do have the Recovery Media on a USB in which i created from this very drive, i can boot the PC from the USB which then gives me options to factory restore etc.
The whole point is that i want this to work without reverting back to the recovery USB, is there any way at all to repair this?
Closing Desktop Doesn't Close Desktop Applications
Oct 29, 2012The instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox?

Jun 8, 2014Since yesterday, I cannot open any folder on my PC and when I try to open task manager to close explorer, it closes right away.
When I try to open any folder (This PC or Downloads for example) my background flashes black, then the task bar goes blank and then nothing happens. When I try to open the task manager, it opens for 2 seconds and then closes itself down. All my files are still accessible since I am able to still play movies from WMP and I can still search from the Start screen.
I do not want to format my PC just to get something like this working again.
OK, I've noticed that what's happening is, explorer.exe pretty much restarts every time I try to open a folder. And that obviously stops the folder I'm trying to open, from opening. What's happening with task manager.

But now my system go to windows boot manager if i boot my computer. And its need me to choose the os or wait for 30 sec.
I use uefi Windows 8. I already disable it via easybcd
Via msconfig
And via windows startup options.
And thats all just make the boot manager go faster not remove it. It just change the 30 sec to 0/3sec.

Sep 28, 2013I just got a new laptop with an i7-4700mq in it.. 4th gen Intels.. what does task manager performance tab show? Mine shows the processor at 1% usage, but the speed up at 3.2 GHz which is turbo boost speed I think..
See attached picture for what I mean. I just remember my previous laptop (i7-740qm) would show it throttling right down to less than 1GHz when nothing was happening. I have the latest drivers.

BIOS Changes Windows Boot Manager Order By Itself
Jul 14, 2014I have an error message at boot time that says [fail] twice then boots normally.
I have tracked it down in other posts to the bios which I change and it works for awhile but then mysteriously changes itself back.
Here is what I do.
F2 at Dell logo
move tab to "boot"
Reorder the boot order to the following:
Windows Boot Manager
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6
then save and exit
machine reboots without error message
Runs/boots fine for awhile then message reappears.
Going back into BIOS shows Windows Boot Manager has moved to the bottom of the list again.
Repeating the fix is only temporary.
How can I set up the BIOS to stay where I put it?

Feb 5, 2014I have an inquiry about the Windows 8 tskmgr loading time. Whenever I press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, it takes AGES to pop up.Usually between 10 and 20 seconds. This happens after every boot and is very frustrating. What is the cause of this and is there a solution?

Jul 12, 2014Just found out that when I go to Startup items from Task manager and msconfig, Startup is not populated at all. All the items set to start are working and visible, just no listing in Startup for any. System scan including Dism comes up clean as a whistle and so is malware detection. Haven't checked since newest updates but can's see a reason for them to do only that.

Sep 15, 2014I'm running Windows 8.1 on a SDD with a second HDD along side it. Inside the Device Manager I disabled my second HDD and rebooted my system.
Windows started as normal, but a few key windows programs have stopped working:
- Task Manager
- Device Manager (basically all control panel functions)
- Powershell (Command Prompt Works, but can't be opened with administrative rights)
The main problem is that I now can't enable my second HDD. Why the HDD is needed for these programs and how I can re-enable my HDD?
Maintenance :: CPU 100% Drops Below 3% Once Task Manager Opened
Jun 16, 2013When CPU usage is just high (50% to 60%) and I open Task Manager, it's usually McAfee on access scanner at work because I've just clicked an emoticon or something like that. Other examples are service host -- some long winded process I can't always find in the TM list to get the name right.
But when it's 100% and this has happened consecutively for over half a dozen attempts to find what spikes this, I'm dead serious: CPU usage has dropped immediately to under 3%. Yesterday and today I've "caught" this thing 2 times. CPU usage drops so fast you can't see what spiked it.
There are 2 Google Ads that pop in right about here but don't show up when I edit the post. These do not work, find hundreds of non-existent "errors" so that you'll buy the program and then when you run it you might get less than half a dozen errors fixed. Don't trust these programs, I don't. I have no control over what Google Ads does but I'd call it anything but "Adsense" to be honest.
I had Norton trial as the default AV when I first fired up and set up the laptop but I'm a McAfee person so set this up and removed Norton during the McAfee setup process. So it's not likely this is an infection. I apply all updates as soon as I see them, if I'm working and can't quit at the time an Update notice comes through then it's no more than overnight that these are applied.
Task Manager - Access Denied While Trying To End Certain Processes?
Dec 6, 2013I am currently using Windows 8 Professional (x64) as an administrator. My issue is that often certain programs or software do not exit properly and show up on Task manager as background processes. The issue is that I cannot end these processes because "Access is Denied" and must therefore restart my computer in order to run these programs. A simple example is Skype. When I quit Skype, it will show up as a background process on Task manager and I cannot end the process. If I try to sign into my Skype account again, it says that I am already logged in from this computer. Battlefield 4 is another example. I've never had this issue with Skype or BF4 previously, nor do I remember installing something significant that may have made changes to my PC.

Jun 7, 2013I unlocked my AMD Phenom II X2 CPU to 4 core, but the Windows not show it. The Task Manager not show it and CPU-Z show only 2 cores. But the Device manager and a BIOS shows all the 4 cores.
I found this solution for the problem, but it is not working. When I do these steps the Windows restarts, but nothing happens. Maybe because I use a Windows 8 and a never version of EasyBCD.

Windows 8.1 - Device Manager Don't Remove Driver
Mar 1, 2014I installed my fresh Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64 bits (build 9600), on my Acer V3-571G laptop.
When I go to device manager, and I want uninstall this driver.
--> Imaging devices
--> and Bluetooth,
When I Disable and Uninstall them, then, it's seems te drivers are gone! But when I restarts mine Laptop, the Imaging devices and bluetooth, comes back?
Why is that? How I can complete remove that? In the standard Windows 8 (not 8.1) that was possible? But 8.1?
Boot Manager Is Missing Cannot Get To Setup Screen
Jun 22, 2013I have looked around a bit and all solutions to this problem require me to get into the startup screen when booting from the installation disk upon startup. The problem is I cannot get to that screen!!
I am a uni student and can download windows 8 OS for free at msdnaa, I have done that and made an image file on a dvd and usb stick. I then put both of those into my dell N5010 (which is running win 7 now) and try to access them upon startup, (I go into the boot menu and try booting from booth DVD and USB) and both times I just get the error "boot manager is missing press ctr, alt, del to restart) so I cannot even get into the installation screen to do the repair that is says I need to do on all the other solutions I have seen.
Task Manager Very Slow To Open First Time
Jan 25, 2013I've been loving the new Task Manager, it's better in every aspect except the time it takes to use. 1 minute is not acceptable for anything that isn't Skyrim, it takes so long that at first I assumed I hadn't pressed the keys correctly.
However it's much faster to open the second time, so I guess some process stays running after it's opened the first time. I wouldn't mind slowing down my startup a bit if it allowed me to have that process already running so when I open it the first time it takes a second.
Which process it might be and how I can set it to execute on startup? I'm not trying to open Task Manager on startup, just whatever makes it open faster.
