I've just reinstalled my Windows 8 operating system onto a new 1tb drive and after it installed my old desktop pic was on the new reinstalled drive. How is this possible unless my del laptop has somehow retained my old image? My other thought was that after reinstallation I signed back into my Microsoft account and this has somehow recognised my old desktop? If the latter is so then why retain just the desktop image and no other images?
View 5 RepliesI don't know how this happened, but the Desktop folder under This PC changed to the D: drive. My system has two partitions, the second of which is the D: drive. The Desktop folder was not only renamed to "D:" but redirected to the drive as well. I tried to delete it from the registry editor and then add it back, but the D: keeps coming back instead. The desktop icon is still there, however.
Is there any way to delete the D: drive and bring back the desktop folder instead under This PC? Screenshot is attached.
P.S. In the screenshot, the actual D: drive (supposed to be next to the C: drive) is not shown because I deleted the partition in hopes of getting rid of the D: drive folder showing up under This PC.
I have new windows 8.1 installed with latest updates.
I have a C drive as my OS drive, and D drive for my documents.
My D drive (formatted as NTFS) has indexing switched on.
But, when I go into indexing options / modify / show all locations, my D drive is not displayed.
I just can't figure it out, this worked just fine under windows 7. I checked the drive authorities and I am the owner to the drive root+ all subfolders and have full authorisation to drive root + subfolders also.
I'm planning on moving an SSD system drive from a laptop that is starting to experience difficulties to a desktop PC.
I'm retired now and my laptop never moves off my desk, so this has offered an opportunity to upgrade at little expense. My laptop is an HP Compaq Presario CQ61, dual core Pentium 4 T4300 2.1GHz with 2 x 120GB SSD drives installed.
The desktop I want to upgrade with the SSD drives is an HP DX6120 Pentium 4 HTT 3.2GHz unit that I've picked up very cheap.
I know a clean install of either Windows 7 or Windows 8 would be best practice, but is there a way I could just transfer the disk to the PC ?
I resized the main partition of the c drive and after the reboot something strange happened. I do have a mouse cursor but the screen is black. No metro, no regular desktop, nothing there. When I do control alt delete I get into task stuff and from there I can logon or log off users but all have the same result, a Black screen with only a mouse c cursor. No hardware changes done. Tried to do an auto repair but no result.

The heat sink on the card blocks the SATA port that the DVD drive is plugged into (SATA1) so I've switched the DVD drive to SATA2. The drive is now showing as connected to port2 in the BIOS, but in windows (Windows 8 64-bit) it isn't detecting the DVD drive at all? I've seen other posts about this on the internet suggesting to add a line to the registry, but I've done that and it doesn't solve the problem.

I have noticed that when the computer exits from sleep mode, either one or both external USB drive folders will open on the desktop. I can only guess this signifies that these drives may have been accessed while the computer was in sleep mode.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a windows 8 laptop that won't boot from either the Hard Drive or Optical Drive. I have taken the Hard drive out and connected it to my desktop that runs Windows 7. I have tried with an USB external adapter and connected directly to the motherboard with SATA and power cables. Neither way has produced a readable drive that I can see any files on.
I need to know if there is an issue with reading Windows 8 formated hard drives in a windows 7 environment or is there something wrong with this hard drive?
Been having trouble this morning with my network drive in my Home Server. It normally connects fine at startup and it all of a sudden wont work.
I have isolated it to my Desktop as i can connect off of my Laptop fine.
The name of my server is Homeserver(192.168.1.77) and I have shared a folder inside the drive rather than the drive its self. This image shows how I'm trying to connect to the folder. And this is the error I'm getting
I have tried:
Resetting ip / dns flushing etc.
sfc /scannow (Says everything is fine.)
Windows 8.1: files in folders on network drive not visible
W2K3 Server can access W8 W8 computer cant see W2K server
Also tried disabling norton on my desktop but still wont work
I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.
My laptop has an HD screen, 1920x1080 to be exact. Some of my desktop icons are out of focus and blurry, but others aren't. At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox?

The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.What do I do?
edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!
When I go to Computer Management my main (OS) drive shows as "Disk 1" and my 2nd internal data drive shows as "Disk 0". Should I switch the SATA cables so that the main drive will show as "Disk 0 and the 2nd internal drive as "Disk 1"?

I just want to transfer all the data from my old computer. This was pretty much all in the folder c:>Users>Myname, but when I try to transfer it all into the same folder on the new computer, obviously with 100gb there is not enough space.

When I launch Macrium, for some reason my SSD is now GPT 1 and the second drive is now GPT 2. This is confusing because I'm used to imaging the top line of partitions which is usually my OS. Now that the GPT numbers are reversed, I have to be careful when doing my backups. How to change this assignment so that the SSD will be GPT1 again?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of moving to an SSD and need to create a backup drive in order to repair the BIOS after transferring everything. However, when I try to create one - the create a recovery drive program won't recognize the flash drive I have connected as a flash drive.
I first tried with a SanDisk Cruzer which apparently had a quirk in that it shows up as a hard drive instead of removable flash drive. That seems to be well documented on forums all over the place and there is no fix.
So, I purchased a cheap 8 GB stick (no brand) and Windows (I'm running 8.1 x64) recognizes it as a removable disk. However, the create a backup utility still won't recognize it. I've found some random fixes that have worked for some (such as plugging it into a different USB port) but nothing has worked for me so far. I've tried doing it with the "copy the recovery partition" option both checked and unchecked.
If there's no solution to this wonderful "quirk" of Windows, then is there something else I can do to repair BIOS? Seems like there's not a fix to my problem out there...
EDIT So as of right now, I tried using HPs recovery software which seems to do the same thing as copying over your entire recovery partition. That didn't work either. However..when I had both USB sticks plugged in the Windows supplied utility recognized the SanDisk Cruzer when I checked the "copy the partition" thing

pc bought in 2013 with windows 8 bundled (so no installation DVDs, no activation key communicated).
upgraded to windows 8.1 in 2013.
I made a recovery USB (system image) on 1st April 2014.
If I need to boot on this USB, my PC will be again exactly as it was on 1st April 2014?
I know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.
I just purchased an Asus R510CC notebook with windows 8 and I bought a SSD drive to replace the current one.
I used Recovery Drive in Windows to create an USB boot drive with the recovery partition on it. I then installed the SSD and booted from the USB. When I get to the option to reset my computer I encounter an error with the following message: "Unable to reset PC. A required drive partition is missing". I already did a bit of research and BIOS tweaking but I can't install Windows onto my SSD.
I just upgraded to 8.1 update 1 officially via Technet. As expected, SkyDrive has been renamed to OneDrive. However, if I look at my OneDrive folders via Properties | Location it still points to a SkyDrive folder. Even software that I use to store backups on my OneDrive folder still point to SkyDrive even though there is no folder with that name. If I try to change it to OneDrive I get folder not found.

It booted up, got to the 4 blue boxes for windows and expected to load my desktop but it didnt. Is it somewhere hidden in Windows 8? If not, is there an alternative? I believe the mail is still being indexed so it may only be a client that accesses the database that is needed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter nuking my computer, due to a fatal user profile issue that could not be recovered from, i reinstalled windows 8.1 from scratch. Everything should be great. However after 1-2 weeks, I've started to experience a new issue that is driving me nuts. The computer is hanging at two points.
(1)The first spot is upon boot, within the desktop. the mouse just spins, and I can't access anything. after 2-4 minutes, the computer reboots on it's own
(2)It occasionally hangs or is slow going through the bios upon boot. It's also hanged at "verifying DMI pool data"
To recap, I cannot access any programs or system functions at this time. I've tried to restore from a point of time, but that action failed.
how to determine if the issue is hard drive vs. bios. in terms of setup, I have a SSD drive where the OS is installed, I also have a separate hard drive.
