Maintenance :: How To Make Primary Drive GPT1 And Second Drive GPT2

Jul 7, 2014

I have a laptop that has an SSD with Win 8.1 + programs, and an HDD for projects. They are both formatted GPT. When I launch Macrium, for some reason my SSD is now GPT 1 and the second drive is now GPT 2. This is confusing because I'm used to imaging the top line of partitions which is usually my OS. Now that the GPT numbers are reversed, I have to be careful when doing my backups. How to change this assignment so that the SSD will be GPT1 again?

Booting From A Secondary Drive (then Back To The Primary)

Mar 12, 2014

I have a question. One related to hard drives, multiple windows os', and BIOS.

I have save data on my old hard drive (disk) that I need to retrieve that is in the Windows7 "My documents recognized by Windows 8.1 (Windows 8.1 is on my new SSD).

I am concerned that my plan to retrieve my data might cause an error in the bootloader if I perform this method

Reboot in Windows 8.1
When the computer gets to the BIOS splash screen, press F11 (boot options)
Select old harddrive (disk drive with Windows 7) to boot into
This will boot in Windows 7 Home Premium which is located on the disk drive
Log in and go into file explorer
retrieve data from documents menu
copy/paste data from Disk Drive to new folder in SSD
Reboot in Windows 7
When the computer gets to the BIOS splash screen, press F11 (boot options)
Select SSD (with Windows 8.1)
Move data to documents folder

(If computer auto reboots from SSD then skip steps 9 and 10)

Setup Installation :: Unallocated Space On Primary Hard Drive

Nov 6, 2012

OK, long story short. I did a clean install to Windows 8 Pro 64. Because of the System Reserved partition, it showed both Win 7 and Win 8 available and would prompt to do a dual boot. I cleaned it up by following the instructions on the below link.

Dual Boot - Delete a OS - Windows 7 Forums

It now no longer dual boots, and Windows 8 is fine. The only issue remaining is that my primary drive in drive management still has unallocated space. Disk 0 has 351MB Unallocated space, and 465GB of system boot, page file, etc...

In the instructions, it says to "Right click on the partition that contains the OS you want to delete and Delete Volume. Then right click on the deleted volume and Delete Partition. Now you should have "Freespace" where this partition originally was."

Well, I can't do that. When I right-click on the unallocated space, all I can do is: New Simple Volume, Properties. Everything else is greyed out. I also can't extend the other partition, the "extend" option is also greyed out.

I'm now on Win 8... How to put that 351MB onto the main partition?

Make The Windows 8 Partition As Primary?

Mar 9, 2013

My system was dual booting Windows 8 and Windows 7. I have deleted the Windows 7 option from the msconfig of Windows 8. Now the system boots automatically into Windows 8 with no problems. If I delete/ format the Windows 7 partition through Windows 8, will it cause any problems?

Also, I found that Windows 7 partition is marked as primary, while the Windows 8 is logical. I

Windows 8 is in C Drive (You can see that its logical)

Windows 7 was in E Drive

There is also a 2.50 GB Simple Basic FAT32 partition with status as - Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) - What is this?

PS: I do have EasyBCD 2.2 and MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition Installed. The latter is not able to modify C drive and set it as primary.

How To Make Search Bar Appear On Primary Monitor Only

May 8, 2014

I am a brand new Windows 8.1 user as of a couple of days ago. I have recently updated to Windows 8.1 and am enjoying it. I have been adjusting defaults to my liking easily enough. But I am having trouble with one small item in my dual monitor setup.

In the Taskbar and Navigation properties, I have unchecked the setting "Show Start on the display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key". This does what I want in regard to always displaying Start on my primary monitor regardless of which screen I am working on when I click the Windows logo key. But if I try using Win+S to open the Search bar (or one of the other search hotkeys as well) while a window on the secondary monitor is active it opens on the right side of that secondary screen instead. Any other time, the Search bar opens on the primary monitor as expected. Any way to make the Search bar always dock to the right side of my primary monitor as well, but I haven't found how yet.

Can't Make Flash Drive Bootable

Aug 2, 2014

Whether I use Legacy or UEFI Mode, I can't get my PC to boot from flash drive, which was NEVER a problem before. It worked just fine, but now I tried Win Toolkit, RUFUS, and WinUSB maker with 2 different Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO files (one by me and on by murphy). Neither worked. I reset BIOS settings completely, but that also didn't work - my PC sees the flash drive, but it just won't boot from it, without any error. If I force that flash drive to be the only boot drive, then it just takes me back into UEFI/BIOS without any error messages...

Required Files Missing Can't Make Recovery Drive

Dec 29, 2013

I built my own PC last year and I've done several OS upgrades in that time frame. First I started with windows 7 basic which I then promptly upgraded to 7 ultimate because my university offered upgrades for $7. I then upgraded to 8 when it first came out and then 8.1 too. I put a new SSD in my PC and copied all my 8.1 data on to it I then turned the old SSD in to a second boot drive for OS X. I'm having problems with 8.1. I wanted to create a repair drive to hopefully root out and fix whatever is causing windows explorer to crash. It's not a virus I've made sure of that. I have a feeling whatever caused this happened when I upgraded to 8.1 and then copied over the SSD. What my product key is for 8.1 pro i just found the email microsoft sent me with my windows 8 key but i have no disc.

when i followed the instructions to make a recovery drive it told me that some of the required files are missing and to use a windows installation disc or media which is a problem because all my windows 8 upgrades have been done online.

also my PC currently doesn't have a disc drive i removed it because i only ever used it to install windows 7 basic.

External Hard Drive Shell Broke / Salvaged Internal Drive?

Dec 26, 2012

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted. What do I do?

edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

Create Recovery Drive Won't Recognize Flash Drive

May 24, 2014

I'm in the process of moving to an SSD and need to create a backup drive in order to repair the BIOS after transferring everything. However, when I try to create one - the create a recovery drive program won't recognize the flash drive I have connected as a flash drive.

I first tried with a SanDisk Cruzer which apparently had a quirk in that it shows up as a hard drive instead of removable flash drive. That seems to be well documented on forums all over the place and there is no fix.

So, I purchased a cheap 8 GB stick (no brand) and Windows (I'm running 8.1 x64) recognizes it as a removable disk. However, the create a backup utility still won't recognize it. I've found some random fixes that have worked for some (such as plugging it into a different USB port) but nothing has worked for me so far. I've tried doing it with the "copy the recovery partition" option both checked and unchecked.

If there's no solution to this wonderful "quirk" of Windows, then is there something else I can do to repair BIOS? Seems like there's not a fix to my problem out there...

EDIT So as of right now, I tried using HPs recovery software which seems to do the same thing as copying over your entire recovery partition. That didn't work either. However..when I had both USB sticks plugged in the Windows supplied utility recognized the SanDisk Cruzer when I checked the "copy the partition" thing

How To Clone / Image Hard Drive And Restore It To New SSD Drive

I know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.

Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?

Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.

Maintenance :: Almost All The Space In Drive C Has Been Used Up?

Feb 22, 2013

I am using Windows 8 x64. I have a few software applications and one or two IDE's installed in drive C(system drive where my Windows is installed). Now my C partition is of 68 GB now suddenly I am seeing that almost all the space in drive C has ben used up and I am only left with ~6 GB of free space. Now when I am in drive C and select all the files and folders and check what is the space that it all takes up, the size returned is only 43.3 GB(check the attachment sc_shot1). But when I view C drive from MyComputer I only get ~6GB of free space shown to me(check the attachment sc_shot2). So if all the files and folders in C only take up 43.3 GB where is the rest of the 68.3 - 43.3 =25 GB. Am I being attacked by a virus or worm ?? I am using a licensed copy of QuickHeal Internet Security 2013 and I have scanned drive C with it, it reports no infections. I have also tried using the "cleanmgr" utility and clear up some space by deleting temporary files, but that at max gives me back ~1GB of free space.

Maintenance :: Scanning And Repairing Drive?

Nov 22, 2013

Im using windows 8.1 which came out with my laptop.

Problem is that, that "scanning and repairing drive ( c : )" stuck at 10% completed...

Today I installed latest TuneUp utilities program, and it recomended me to use ' disk doctor' , after that, Ive restarted laptop as it asked, and now all i see is HP logo and that line, where it says ' S. and R. drive C : 10% completed ..

It been like that for a hour or so...

I had did disk scan n repair month ago as well, but then everything worked without any problems. Then (month ago) and now, while this scan and repair is working, I hear some kind of sounds coming out from my laptop. Like clunking, very quiet beepinv or clicking something like that( never heard these sounds, while i boot and use my laptop normaly).

Ive red in this forum about same situation, but didnt got correct answer.

Is there anyway to cancel this scan? I tried holding power button and restarting like that- on boot it goes on s and r. again, and stucks at 10% ..

If no, how long it will take to scan and fix c disk, if it has 1TB in in?

Maintenance :: Windows 8 - Cleaning Out D Drive

Now then, my "D" drive which was or still has as far as I know got the factory settings on it which I guess is the restore points and things like that. It is 13.5GB and has only 2.33GB free on top of the first amount.

What I would like to know is can I format that drive and use it for windows 8 restore or has that been done by 8 when I upgraded to it. With only just over 2gb left there is not much room for restore points.

Maintenance :: Backup Drive Is Full?

Apr 27, 2014

Several weeks ago I installed a remote hard drive. I am using it to store automatic system backups.

In the last few days I have been notified that the drive is full.

I am using 245GB on my primary (C:) drive.

The remote backup drive has a 1TB capacity.

It's somewhat surprising to be told that drive is full. Opening the drive to look at the files, there is a long list of subfolders under the folder labelled "Backup". One has a long, arcane number, and the other sub-sub folders seem to be daily updates named C/Users/My Name/ and from one to four sub sub sub folders or file names. Clicking on the multiple sub folders or the file names causes nothing to happen.

How can I clean this up? I would like to continue to back up my system automatically, but the drive seems to be full of garbage.
