Command Used To Make File System And Hidden File No Longer Working
May 29, 2014The attrib +s +h command that is used to make a file a system and hidden file is no longer working. When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.
I am running Windows 8- 64 bit

It is possible to move it now to another drive (e.g. to NAS)?
I try to do this manually, but even though I can open the folder "WindowsImageBackup" and I see several saved files in included folders I cannot manipulate with them.

When I launch Macrium, for some reason my SSD is now GPT 1 and the second drive is now GPT 2. This is confusing because I'm used to imaging the top line of partitions which is usually my OS. Now that the GPT numbers are reversed, I have to be careful when doing my backups. How to change this assignment so that the SSD will be GPT1 again?

I made recovery discs before the upgrade but would like to backup again after the upgrade so i don't have to revert to the factory set-up or refresh option as I have already had that experience and i don't want to go that route again! My laptop is only 9months old & running fine so far with no issues, i can back-up my documents etc to my flash drive but i would like to back up, 'or do you call it copying', the whole setup so if i have a problem i can re-install the whole lot as it stands from today. I have increased the system restore percentage bar to allow more restores points as another safety option.

Jan 17, 2014A friend's Samsung laptop would no longer boot, and startup repair would run and failed several times.
We planned to restore it to factory original, but wanted to boot to a Linux disk to copy his files first. In order to allow that, we went into Setup and disabled Fast Bios mode, disabled Secure Boot, and changed the OS mode from UEFI to CSM. We booted the Linux disk, copied his files, then reset all the Setup settings back. But now the computer will not boot at all, it shows the Samsung logo screen, then shuts itself off. We reset Setup to Optimized Defaults, made no change.
There does not seem to be any hardware failure since I can still boot to the Linux disk and see the hard drive if I make all the same changes that we made the first time around in Setup.
Copy Path In File Explorer Not Working
Mar 3, 2013I was thrilled to see MS finally added the "copy path" function to the ribbon. To my dismay, it has suddenly stopped working. I can't think of any significant changes I've made to my system (no clipboard extenders recently added, etc.). If I use the SHIFT+right-click copy as path shell extension it works fine.

How To Keep Windows From Opening New Copy Of Same Text File
Jan 7, 2013I suppose I could use Word instead of notepad, but I don't want to wait forever for the files to open. Windows8 and 7 will let you open as many different copies of the same txt file as you want. With keeping my computer on most of the time, and doing various things, sometimes I forget that I have a file open. The most common instance is my list of software keys and activation codes. I had to reinstall something yesterday and had the file open, and it ended up behind a bunch of windows. Much later, I bought a new piece of software and had to add something to the list, a couple of somethings. I saved and closed--fine. Then, turning the computer off, it told me that my "Versions" file was still open--did I want to save, or what? At that point, I had to cancel the shutdown, open the saved copy, compare the saved copy with the one that was still open to see which information was different. Obviously, at that moment, I had not figured out which copy was which. If I had saved, it would have overwritten the changes, by reverting to the old version that I had open. I've had this happen several times, sometimes with new information in each file. I fail to understand why, when I try to open a txt file, Windows does not alert me that it is already open, and do I want to open another copy?

Apr 17, 2014Currently running WinXP, meets all requirement for Windows 8. However, when I try to copy the ISO file to USB using Win7 DVD download tool to create a bootable USB device, the USB I'm trying to copy it to will not show up in the list of "Devices to Copy In".
I have tried this several times with 2 different USB drives, both 8GB, one with more than 4GB free and the another is completely empty. They both work perfectly well, but when I reach the screen with the list of devices to copy the ISO file on to (Step 3 of 4, Win7 USB/DVD Download Tool) they don't show up on the list despite re-inserting them and refreshing a couple hundred times. The only removable device that does show up is the Floppy Disk.
I am using the DVD is not an option, since my DVD player crashed last week and I don't have the time to get it fixed right now, and I'd really like to get Windows 8 installed as soon as possible.

Nov 4, 2012Got Win8 Pro Retail genuine installed and have a multi partitioned PC.
I am Administrator, and I have UIC set to its lowest possible setting.
I cannot copy any files to the C: Drive (root)... every time I get an error message and it will not let me do anything with the root.
So, I ran gpedit.msc and did these steps..
1. Run gpedit.msc, navigate and browse to Computer Configuration--Windows Settings--Security Settings--Local Policies--Security Options
2. Set policy User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators - Elevate without prompting
3. Set policy User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation - Disabled
4. Set policy User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Disabled
OK, now perfect - I have full control of the root drive again... But this sparked another major issue with the 'modern apps' (metro)...
All modern/metro apps will now NOT RUN because they want UIC turned on (as in change those settings back I just tweaked).....
As soon as I turn UIC back on.... metro apps work - and I am blocked from my root drive again.

Jul 8, 2014how to rebuilt user with broken system settings and keep directory structure (for scripts and non -windows friendly software) and hopefully user name.
Problem: Main user profile is broken, flat out broken. After login the screen starts flashing and it gets worse from there. I can run everything and not duplicate the error message. I always create a pristine user when I do an OS install. Administrator is OK, but it has saved me more than once to have the regular admin-type account. Since I have the nice, fluffy, running profile now I would like to learn just where is it reading these files that tell it bad things.
Another is a broken video driver (sounds were Windows Default on the working one, I told it no sounds in light of what I read) Both profiles are running the exact desktop wallpaper changer, it is working fine on the one account. I couldn't turn it off anyway on the bad account, I can't get to any of the settings windows, regedit, control panel items (that I want) are not running. Same errors as above.
I assume the calls are in the .appdata directory or perhaps the registry. I used to know how to open another user's registry in regedit but can't figure it out in Windows 8. Is there a way to tell it only to run particular services for a certain user, I can't see the services module when in the broken profile, again, same type of errors as before. Not sure which info you want on the machine or how you get it.

Jun 10, 2014I'm running Windows 8.1 (standard/ home edition) and can't download a couple .exe files. I get "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder". errors. I'm the only user on this computer and have administrator access.
The file resides on mediafire and via my ipad I was able to manage to transfer it to dropbox, but I still get the same error. The filename (partial) is created but no further downloading is done.
I can't take ownership of the file-- it doesn't exist on my computer yet.
I can't change the local security policy (I understand this is only available in Win 8 Pro version).
UAC is already disabled as much as I can figure (via the slider set to never notify).
Short of setting up a super admin account (would this even work?)

If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?

Make System Image In Windows 8?
Sep 16, 2013have our friends computer all set up and ready to go.One of the things that came about during this process is, I learned that you can make a real disk image in Windows 8 without using a third party software program.
Something I didn't think was possible, and you don't have to jump through hoops to do it.
As "Badrobot", pointed out to me.
There is a utility in the Windows Control Panel named Windows 7 File Recovery, (the strange name is probably why I never figure out what it does) It is really the Disk Image utility from Windows 7 and will make a Disk Image of the C: drive on your Windows 8 computer, and has nothing to do with recovering Windows 7 files, as far as I can see.
Why they didn't include this option in Windows 8 Recovery is a mystery.
Anyway the utility is really easy to use, makes a backup very quickly, and also creates a Windows Boot disk that will take you to the recovery interface if your computer won't boot or go to the Recovery Screen.
I haven't actually checked but it says that the option to restore you computer from a Disk Image will now, be available when you open the System Restore Windows along with the Refresh, and Restore options.

On the laptop I'm setting up, I created a new partition just big enough to hold the image and placed it there. On my computer I placed it on a different physical drive so that it will work even if my hard drive dies.
So I have to admit that I complained about Windows 8 not having this capability in error, but I still say that it's Microsoft's fault for hiding it in a location that I never expected to find it, under a name that makes no sense at all.
As long as I'm complaining again, I want to ask, "Why can't you type in "Disk Manager" in the search on the Metro screen and find "Disk Manager".
Half of the problem with Windows 8 is that they changed the name on things that have been the same for years.
Anyway both computers now have Windows 8 generated Disk Images and I feel better. LOL

Since I need this for about ten folders, it isn't really efficient to use separate shortcuts and just test which one is working at the time. The problem is that the name of the target is always changing and can sometimes take a month to go back to the original name. I could also use a way of giving the file another name [so one file with two names]. are any of these possible.

Can't Make Flash Drive Bootable
Aug 2, 2014Whether I use Legacy or UEFI Mode, I can't get my PC to boot from flash drive, which was NEVER a problem before. It worked just fine, but now I tried Win Toolkit, RUFUS, and WinUSB maker with 2 different Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO files (one by me and on by murphy). Neither worked. I reset BIOS settings completely, but that also didn't work - my PC sees the flash drive, but it just won't boot from it, without any error. If I force that flash drive to be the only boot drive, then it just takes me back into UEFI/BIOS without any error messages...
