View 9 RepliesUpgraded my Win 8 Pro to Win 8.1 Pro and problems started.
Now my File Explorer Navigation Pane Favorites feature is completely missing and cannot be restored, regardless of what I have tried.
I have tried:
1. File Explorer ribbon / View tab / Navigation Pane / Show Favorites = ON
2. Folder Options / General tab / Navigation Pane / Show favorites = ON (also have tried Restore Defaults)
3. Recreate "C:Users<my user name>Links" folder and create a link inside it.
4. Run the "fix_empty_favorites.reg" file
Favorites Empty in Navigation Pane - Fix - Windows 7 Forums
5. Run "Add_Favorites_to_Navigation_Pane.bat" file:
Favorites - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8
6. Manually restore Default Favorite Links :
Favorites - Restore Default Favorite Links in Navigation Pane - Windows 7 Forums
7. Ensure "{BFB9D5E0-C6A9-404C-B2B2-AE6DB6AF4968}" registry branch that is pointing to my proper Links folder as per :
User Folders - Restore Default Location - Windows 7 Forums
8. Remove/detach from Homegroup (don't need it).
Homegroup - Change File and Folder Sharing Settings - Windows 7 Forums
9. Added. Right click on the Navigation pane and Select "Show Favorites" to be ON.
... and of course, log out/login AND reboot multiple times after all of the above.
The Favorites will not appear on Navigation pane.
I need to have a shortcut in file explorer go down a list of three targets and pick the first that works. Since I need this for about ten folders, it isn't really efficient to use separate shortcuts and just test which one is working at the time. The problem is that the name of the target is always changing and can sometimes take a month to go back to the original name. I could also use a way of giving the file another name [so one file with two names]. are any of these possible.
If not, is there another file manager I can use with these capabilities.
"To change the way Windows Explorer opens (copy and paste)
one of the examples below to the target portion of a shortcut and name it Windows Explorer.
Examples:
Open Windows Explorer with My Computer as the root with
all drives visible and "My Computer" selected.
C:WINDOWSEXPLORER.EXE /e,/n,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"
(other examples followed)
In Windows 8.1 the "target" box is grayed out. File Explorer always starts with the THIS PC folder highlighted... and I would like to change that. How?
Blackscreen after login, no start, no taskbar, no desktop, but I can run applications using task manager.
I tried running explorer.exe, but nothing happened. Neither can i run control pannel (::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683} No such interface supported).
I also tried using the command line sfc /scannow in safe mode but it still cannot solve the problem. It seems that some services or process died.
I deleted my links and favorites folders the other day, not realizing what I was doing. Now I want the "links" folder back, because I miss the Favorites in the navigation pane of Windows Explorer. What I need to know is how to re-create the "links" folder.
This thread dealt with a similar problem; however, I need some explanation on how to make the "links" folder and have it recognized as the default folder for Favorites. I've tried to find some info on how to make a shell folder but nothing's made much sense or worked for me.
How to arrange the Internet Explorer "Favorites" ? It won't let me move my favorites around.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was recently trying to transfer some documents from my desktop computer to my laptop, and in some confusion, I've concluded that I've deleted my "Links" folder my accident. I cannot add anything to my "Favorites" folder. I heard that you can create a new "Links" folder, but how.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy notebook is setup with a local account instead being logged in with a Microsoft. Since Microsoft doesn't allow you to use OneDrive in Windows 8.1 with a local or network domain, I'm using the program syncDriver so I can continue using OneDrive on my notebook.
The issue I'm having is that when I add a link to OneDrive in my Windows Explorer Favorites, the link will get removed at some point without my interaction. My guess is that Windows is removing the link from favorites but I can't figure out when or why it's doing this.
how to stop Windows from doing this?
I recently switched from a local account to a MS account & noticed that it brought in my saved favorites (from the last time I had a MS acct using Win 8), which caused some duplicates.
While I was going thru & deleting the duplicates, I accidently deleted some of my favorites. What I am trying to do is see if there is a way to look at the IE favorites saved to my MS account & then re add the missing ones back really quick.
The attrib +s +h command that is used to make a file a system and hidden file is no longer working. When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.
I am running Windows 8- 64 bit
It seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?

For each file, I copy to my Windows explorer folder of SkyDrive, I have to individually right click each file and select Make Available online only. View 1 Replies View RelatedI just did the 'refresh without losing files or settings' after having Windows 8.1 for like 6 months to refresh. Well I lost pretty much every setting and basically started from scratch minus backing up my files to an external/cloud like a regular full reformat. This feature save maybe 5 minutes. and my monitor settings are all messed up, tiny text or scroll bar on the bottom of IE because pages wont fit if I make the text larger, the resolution was fine before I reformatted. What a POS OS. I can go on and on and on. MS should be sued for emotional distress for this faulty POS OS.
So my recents docs is gone we all know, but there are sort of workarounds. I want my recent docs, not recent 'Items' that I was able to pin to start but requires more navigating to get to recent word files etc.
I did this Just open the run dialog box by pressing Win + R and type in "recent". There you can see your recent activities.
Note: "Recent places" can be access under Windows Explorer's under "Favorite".
Also you can create a shortcut of the "recent" at your desktop and then pin it to start menu. For this just right click on desktop and seclect New>Shortcut. In file location type the path
well when I enter the copied path to the new shortcut, it says invalid. The path is:
C:Users
ameRecent"C:Users
ame
ecentRecent"
Edit, after just noticing the link above actually doubled the path, I just deleted the duplicate second half and got the shortcut to create and made it work.
great program that it duplicated the path when I copied it once.
I know there must be a way but I can't do it with Snip, Fraps, or Print Screen. None of them will work on the start screen.
I wanted to show that I haven't completely ignored my start menu. LOL
I think I asked this before and got an answer but I looked through my old posts and can't find it.
How do you do it?

The paths which I did use are:

C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup
Is there another way to add files to the Windows 8.1 Startup files? I have done some research on Google but did not find anything.I have also tried adding a key to the register which did not work either. For the registery I have used both using the direct .exe and the .lnk file. wYMGhdU.png
Windows 8 start screen adds 2 new columns when I add 2 items to a block of programs.
I end up with all these categories that have 2 or 3 icons off to the side when one new column would do it in a much more compact format. Some categories could be only one column but it still insists on using 2.
Am I missing something some place in the settings or something?
I wanted to post a screenshot but none of my screen capture software seems to work in Metro.
Snipping tool, Camstudio, and Fraps all close the Metro screen as soon as I activate them.
Make Start Screen semi transparent with Glass2k, on windows 8.1 and windows 10 tp.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am on my laptop at the moment and am trying to make a BIOS update stick for flashing my main desktop at home that has an Asus P8Z77-V board.
Now I have downloaded and saved both the BIOS utility - renamer and the BIOS version itself and both are zipped files.
I have tried using 7-zip to rename that BIOS file which the manual tells me I have to do but to get it to work when I use the 7-zip it goes to choose an app from the store. Now I have never fully understood zipping and unzipping files to be able to use the application and now this message has got me even more perplexed as to what to do!
I did try this at home on the main machine but I did go round in circles on that (7) machine and until I get the BIOS ready on the stick I cannot flash the BIOS on that main machine.
Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)
amongst other projects. I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.
Until I activated Windows 8, I could pin to the taskbar, now I can't!

View 8 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Windows 8.1 this week and have a fully updated installation now with minimal programs installed. My problem is this, I have my downloads folder set to sort files by date created, from newest to oldest so I can easily find my newest downloads as they should be at the top of the listing, but Windows explorer will not refresh the view if I have have explorer open, forcing me to either manually refresh it or go to another folder, then come back which updates the view. I never had to do this with the old win 8 pro installation and have tried resetting the folders several times but it still won't update by itself. I do have the latest version of Start8 installed, but that never caused a problem before.
