How to make shortcuts appear in the sidebar of your windows explorer. I have a shortcut of the online backup program Skydrive but it wont appear in my sidebar. On the picture you can see what i mean with Side Bar etc.
View 4 RepliesMy IE was working properly yesterday, then all of a sudden I hit refresh and there's no sidebar. Not in 32/64 bit, not in incognito mode, gone on both the metro and desktop versions. It's gotten quite frustrating now as I am unable to have any kind of interaction with chat, there's just nothing there.

When clicking on the down arrow to add existing shortcuts i can. But i have other programs I wish to pin that aren't listed in there. Looking for restoring the ability to pin programs to the start menu .
I just got a laptop with windows 8 last week. I hate the things they are doing with windows, my last OS was XP. I found that the file path names were hidden by default and set out to change that. In doing so I changed the access permissions thinking that it would allow me to see the file paths and have access, but it didn't, although I did find out where to change the explorer settings so that I now can see the file path, even though it's not as complete as in XP. So here's the problem: I checked the access permissions on each user type to open things up, but now in explorer some of the folders appear as shortcuts with the little 'arrow in a box' icon, and when you try to open it, it refuses access. I'm thinking this might be to the changes in access permissions, but it might not be.

What's the filepath to the Games explorer? (it can be accessed via Run and typing shell:games).
It starts in Libraries, i want to make it start in favourites, is there a way?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to have a shortcut in file explorer go down a list of three targets and pick the first that works. Since I need this for about ten folders, it isn't really efficient to use separate shortcuts and just test which one is working at the time. The problem is that the name of the target is always changing and can sometimes take a month to go back to the original name. I could also use a way of giving the file another name [so one file with two names]. are any of these possible.
If not, is there another file manager I can use with these capabilities.
I use SkyDrive quite every time. For each file, I copy to my Windows explorer folder of SkyDrive, I have to individually right click each file and select Make Available online only. I want the explorer to do this for each and every file I copy to the folder so that I don't need to waste time to do it all by myself.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIt's quite pointless for me, since I'm connected via cable, and I can't seem to do anything at all with the sidebar anyway. Double clicking on the only available network does nothing.
Any way to disable it? It's mildly annoying when it pops up when I misclick the icon. It also, I think, is what causes the right side of the screen to be rendered black when Desktop Window Manager is turned off. The black portion of the screen is the same size as the sidebar, and since turning off dwm.exe turns off Metro rendering, and the sidebar is the only Metro element I can think of that I can reach from the desktop, it makes sense that it might be the culprit.
The way the date and sidebar pop up whenever I use my mouse in certain places is very annoying.
How do I disable both of them?
Also, how do I disable password protected log-on?
I really liked the sidebar that popped up from the left of the screen showing what you had open in Windows 8. Now it's suddenly gone and I don't know why.
Also, I've noticed that when I launch Chrome from the Start page, it no longer opens a Chrome browser independent of the Desktop, as it used to. Now it just opens Desktop and launches Chrome from within there.
I just wanted to know if there is any app to put Live tiles on desktop...Just like a sidebar.. instead of gadgets, live tiles...
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen i choose the connection's icon from the task bar, to connect to wifi, the connection side bar appears for a brief instant and disappears. At the moment i can connect to the network in my home, since it is default, but anywhere else i cant choose a new network.
Same occurs when i try to display available networks from the network and sharing centre.
I made a workaround which is very cumbersome for a casual user.
1. command prompt, and listed and deleted the profiles, using the netsh wlan command
2. Network and sharing
3. Setup new connection or network
4. Manually connect to a wireless network
5. typed the credentials of the network, checked start this connection automatically box and apply.
I have a brand new Hp Pavilion and while in the process of customizing my desktop and taskbar I found that i am unable to pin anything from the desktop or shortcuts I created (such as Microsoft Word, or the snipping tool) to the taskbar. I have tried all three methods to try and pin.
The only items pinned are the ones already there from the first boot.

since then any desktop shortcuts which pointed to a website now just bring up the google search screen.
this happens for both firefox and IE same thing happens if I use windows search and then select one of the options.
This is weird, occasionally as I open up firefox and go to enter text into any field I notice that I am unable to type. Instead what happens is if I hit a key such as F which is linked to a windows shortcut for files, the files search menu pops up even though i never pressed the windows key at any time. This problem isn't just limited to firefox, once it is started I have a very hard time getting it to being able to type normally. So if there is no shortcut linked to that key, there is no input otherwise i get the shortcuts (H - share, Q - search, etc). Restarting doesn't always work, sometimes all it takes is excessive clicking of a search bar, other times just closing an internet broswer. Pressing the windows key does nothing, and I haven't been able to find a concrete fix for the issue. Is there a way to fix and or avoid this completely?

In Windows 8, what does one need to do, so that when one creates a shortcut, it does not have "shortcut" added to the end of the name?
Of course one can rename the shortcut and delete that suffix, but simpler it they were not created that way from the outset.
I managed to stop that behavior in WinXP and Win7, but I forget how, and I don't know if it is done the same way in Windows 8 anyhow.
By the way, I do not mind the little arrow on shortcut icons, a little reminder that it is a shortcut (but no need for "shortcut" to be added to the name.)
Also, if I create a shortcut on my WinXP computer, it does not add a file extension. For instance, if I create a shortcut to a file named "program.exe", the shortcut in XP will just say "Program". On my Windows 8 computer though, the shortcut is called program.exe.shortcut.
I don't remember if it was that way in XP by default, or whether I did some tweak years ago. Although I do have Explorer set to show file extensions, I don't need a shortcut to include the extension, as well as no suffix "shortcut".
Is there a tweak in Windows 8 to have the default shortcut not include the word "shortcut" at the end, and not include the extension of the file linked to?
So I was typing something into the search bar for google chrome and when i touched certain key it opened up the app menu or closed the who window entirely. the same happened when i tried to play a game off of steam, why is this happening and whats the best way to stop it?

On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?
I use several symbols often (not just on word docs, but also online). Instead of having to turn on the numlock and typing alt+#, I would like to be able to use shorter shortcuts.
I know that for word docs, I can set the shortcut to whatever I want (strangely, OneNote doesn't let me...). Is there a way I can change the shortcut sequences that could be applied oustide of word docs?
I use keyboard shortcuts extensively. Some are application specific, some are system shortcuts. I am finding that Windows 8 shortcuts are overriding shortcuts I use in some applications, and I would like to be able to delete or reassign the system shortcut so I can use it in an application. However, while there is a myriad of posts on different people's ideas of "essential" keyboard shortcuts, I can find no information on how to change shortcuts.

I can put them there all right, but when I try to use them again, I get message something like: "the document to which this shortcut points has been moved or deleted", and then asks me if I should delete the shortcut, which I do since obviously it no longer works. View 7 Replies View RelatedInstead of storing my photographs on the C drive on my Windows 8 machine, I have them on a powered USB hard drive which is always attached to my PC. In the My Pictures folder in Windows (C:users[name]My Pictures) I've created a shortcut to the photos folder on my USB hard drive. This works fine when I navigate to it using Explorer or any other file exploring software.
However, when I use a photo editing application such as GIMP2, click Open and navigate to the My Pictures folder on my C drive, the shortcut folder is not shown. Other image folders which are actually in that folder are shown. To see the shortcut folder I need to change what is shown from 'All images' to 'All files'. When I do this I can then see the 'My Pictures - Shortcut.lnk'but if I then try and open that folder I receive an error message saying that opening the shorcut failed: unknown file type.
Why this should be? Similar behaviour is exhibited in Photoshop Express. When I select my pictures folder, the folders that are physically in C:users[name]My Pictures are shown but not my shortcut folder so there seems to be no way of accessing the photos on my USB hard drive. Another image editing app I have also ignores the My pictures shortcut folder, so I think it's a Windows thing rather than a problem with the individual apps.
I have View hidden files ticked.
I just bought a new Dell with Windows 8, and after installing Office 2010, I inadvertently deleted the Office program shortcuts from the Start Menu as I was placing them on the Desktop. They're also gone from the All apps menu. how to put them back?
