Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts Locked - Unable To Type?
Dec 12, 2013This is weird, occasionally as I open up firefox and go to enter text into any field I notice that I am unable to type. Instead what happens is if I hit a key such as F which is linked to a windows shortcut for files, the files search menu pops up even though i never pressed the windows key at any time. This problem isn't just limited to firefox, once it is started I have a very hard time getting it to being able to type normally. So if there is no shortcut linked to that key, there is no input otherwise i get the shortcuts (H - share, Q - search, etc). Restarting doesn't always work, sometimes all it takes is excessive clicking of a search bar, other times just closing an internet broswer. Pressing the windows key does nothing, and I haven't been able to find a concrete fix for the issue. Is there a way to fix and or avoid this completely?

I am finding that Windows 8 shortcuts are overriding shortcuts I use in some applications, and I would like to be able to delete or reassign the system shortcut so I can use it in an application. However, while there is a myriad of posts on different people's ideas of "essential" keyboard shortcuts, I can find no information on how to change shortcuts.

Mar 27, 2014Regularly, when using keyboard shortcuts a Keyboard Shortcuts panel appears automatically. I can't find a way to close the panel out.
The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?
Edit: The panel is displayed every time I use a keyboard shortcut.
Solved: To make the panel hide, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Right-cursor-key.

Apr 16, 2014I just installed a fresh copy of windows 8.1 on my Asus N53S laptop that comes stock with Windows 7 and now my keyboard shortcuts for volume do not work. Above the F1-F4 keys i have three buttons to mute, increase and decrease the volume which do not work. The keyboard shortcut's for muting, decreasing and increasing volume do not work either (Fn+F10-F12) but the shortcut for decreasing brightness and turning the screen off works (Fn+F5-F7) If there is any way to get this working again.

Mar 10, 2014I have a brand new Hp Pavilion and while in the process of customizing my desktop and taskbar I found that i am unable to pin anything from the desktop or shortcuts I created (such as Microsoft Word, or the snipping tool) to the taskbar. I have tried all three methods to try and pin.
The only items pinned are the ones already there from the first boot.

Windows 8.1 - Pictures Folder Disappeared From Libraries List?
Dec 17, 2013Windows 8.1. I built a new computer yesterday, and installed Windows 8.1. I had previously run Windows 7 on my older computer.
Everything was working great, till today I decided to move my documents, pictures, music, and video folders to a different drive. I succeeded fine with documents, music, and video, however pictures seem to be a little messed up.
see the below screenshot:
At the top, you will see it lists folders for music twice, both folders show my music files in them. I realize these are probably just pointers to the music folder, but now I have music twice, and pictures is not up there.
However, when I check to show libraries in the navigation pane, you will on the same screen shot, it does list documents, music, pictures, and video there as it should.
How I can get those folders back up at the top as they should be?
Debugging :: BSOD Windows 8.1 - Error PFN List Corrupt
Aug 22, 2014Today I've had a bsod on Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit, I got this error pfn list corrupt and waited for the pc to restart and it didn't. I've turned off the pc by holding the power button for a couple of seconds, restarted it, now it doesn't boot. The lights on the motherboard light up but the cpu fan isn't running.

Apr 6, 2014I have an Asus computer running windows 8. When I open the network connections I cant see the list of available networks. I see my own connection to the internet which is named Network but that is all I see. when I check it on my laptop also running windows 8 I see a full list of available networks. Is there a setting in windows that will allow me to see this or is something blocking the list from being displayed.

Sep 15, 2014This has been happening for a while but it only ever happens after wake-up from sleep and it's back up again in 5 seconds flat so it's never bothered me too much.
If I catch the error I believe it's PFN_LIST_CORRUPT. Running Windbg on the minidumps gives a range of causes, memory_corruptions, fileinfo.sys, ntkrnlmp.exe
Apparently this is either bad memory or driver. I ran memtester86 for 8 passes and my memory came up clear so I'm thinking bad drivers. I followed the instructions for driver verifier but unfortunately my system will BSOD when booting with DRIVER VERIFIER IO MANAGER VIOLATION error so I have to enter safe mode and disable it.

How To Get Shortcuts In Win 8 Not Put Suffix Shortcut
Apr 1, 2013In Windows 8, what does one need to do, so that when one creates a shortcut, it does not have "shortcut" added to the end of the name?
Of course one can rename the shortcut and delete that suffix, but simpler it they were not created that way from the outset.
I managed to stop that behavior in WinXP and Win7, but I forget how, and I don't know if it is done the same way in Windows 8 anyhow.
By the way, I do not mind the little arrow on shortcut icons, a little reminder that it is a shortcut (but no need for "shortcut" to be added to the name.)
Also, if I create a shortcut on my WinXP computer, it does not add a file extension. For instance, if I create a shortcut to a file named "program.exe", the shortcut in XP will just say "Program". On my Windows 8 computer though, the shortcut is called program.exe.shortcut.
I don't remember if it was that way in XP by default, or whether I did some tweak years ago. Although I do have Explorer set to show file extensions, I don't need a shortcut to include the extension, as well as no suffix "shortcut".
Is there a tweak in Windows 8 to have the default shortcut not include the word "shortcut" at the end, and not include the extension of the file linked to?

Oct 29, 2013I've installed some software that runs on the Desktop. On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?
Symbols Shortcuts - Can Reprogram?
Sep 17, 2013I use several symbols often (not just on word docs, but also online). Instead of having to turn on the numlock and typing alt+#, I would like to be able to use shorter shortcuts.
I know that for word docs, I can set the shortcut to whatever I want (strangely, OneNote doesn't let me...). Is there a way I can change the shortcut sequences that could be applied oustide of word docs?
Document Shortcuts On Desktop?

I can put them there all right, but when I try to use them again, I get message something like: "the document to which this shortcut points has been moved or deleted", and then asks me if I should delete the shortcut, which I do since obviously it no longer works. Is there a way I can put documents on the desktop, and retrieve them whenever?

Aug 5, 2013Instead of storing my photographs on the C drive on my Windows 8 machine, I have them on a powered USB hard drive which is always attached to my PC. In the My Pictures folder in Windows (C:users[name]My Pictures) I've created a shortcut to the photos folder on my USB hard drive. This works fine when I navigate to it using Explorer or any other file exploring software.
However, when I use a photo editing application such as GIMP2, click Open and navigate to the My Pictures folder on my C drive, the shortcut folder is not shown. Other image folders which are actually in that folder are shown. To see the shortcut folder I need to change what is shown from 'All images' to 'All files'. When I do this I can then see the 'My Pictures - Shortcut.lnk'but if I then try and open that folder I receive an error message saying that opening the shorcut failed: unknown file type.
Why this should be? Similar behaviour is exhibited in Photoshop Express. When I select my pictures folder, the folders that are physically in C:users[name]My Pictures are shown but not my shortcut folder so there seems to be no way of accessing the photos on my USB hard drive. Another image editing app I have also ignores the My pictures shortcut folder, so I think it's a Windows thing rather than a problem with the individual apps.
I have View hidden files ticked.
