Hardware Drivers :: Asus N53S Laptop / Win 8.1 Fresh Install - Keyboard Shortcuts For Volume Do Not Work
Apr 16, 2014
I just installed a fresh copy of windows 8.1 on my Asus N53S laptop that comes stock with Windows 7 and now my keyboard shortcuts for volume do not work. Above the F1-F4 keys i have three buttons to mute, increase and decrease the volume which do not work. The keyboard shortcut's for muting, decreasing and increasing volume do not work either (Fn+F10-F12) but the shortcut for decreasing brightness and turning the screen off works (Fn+F5-F7) If there is any way to get this working again.

I reinstalled my 8.1 pro (legal copy, disk been fully formatted) and it was okay for few hours. Next time im starting the laptop, my keyboard and touchpad doesnt work. I plugged USB mouse and keyboard and it works just fine. I went to device manager and besides Standart PS/2 keyboard and mouse icons there was orange triangle meaning that i have problem with drivers. I searched drivers online, but unsuccsessily.. After few hours of trying to fix it, my Standart PS/2 Keyboard turned into Unknown device and now im completely lost. Adding photo of device manager

In the image :Why is that? how to solve it ,the store doesn't work? It disappears with fresh install! Does taking ownership of some system files result in store failure?

Strange problem I am having with my windows 8.
I have an ASUS laptop running 8.0 which I am running with a second screen (dell monitor) connected via VGA. I have it set so the external monitor is the primary screen and the laptop is the secondary screen. It is set for a taskbar on each display, with the primary taskbar containing the shortcuts on the monitor, so when I click them they open there. It's been working fine for months.
So I switched it on today and my taskbar shortcuts have jumped to the taskbar on the second (laptop) screen, however my external display is still set as the primary and still has my desktop icons, trashcan etc but a blank taskbar (like the one that used to be on the secondary display)! When I click the shortcuts which are now on the taskbar of the laptop screen they open on the monitor. (ie the wrong screen) I disconnected the monitor, turned off the extended desktop and set it to just use the laptop screen. All my desktop icons moved to the laptop screen but the taskbar shortcuts vanished and I was left with a blank taskbar. If I plug the monitor in again and extend the desktop they reappear, but on the wrong screen. Even if I reboot without the external screen connected I get no shortcuts until I plug in the monitor and set it to extend the desktop. I have checked all the taskbar settings and they are all correct.

1. Keys do not work in Any of the Internet Browsers. Even the on-screen keyboard does not work.
2. Every time I double click a file, A pop-up "Do you want xyz to make changes to the computer ?" is welcoming me!
3, I click on any of the icons in the task-bar and a new window is opening. For example, If I click on the firefox icon pinned at the bottom, Every instance I click it, a new window is opening
4. I am not able to open a folder by double click. I can only open it by right click and then Open
5. None of the keys and keyboard shorcuts seem to work. But that is not the problem with keyboard because, I am able to type words in Wordpad and Notepad
I formatted my Windows 8 twice and still these problems are there. Even if I restart it, things work fine for 5 min and then the problem would be back.

Windows 8 has suddenly stopped to recognise my friends keyboard. Mashing Shift-F8 seems to let the keyboard work (for several minutes). All drivers are up to date, works perfectly in Safemode and BIOS. I have reinstalled windows 8 (its only used for web browsing) and nothing has worked. It is a Toshiba Satellite.

I have a ASUS N56VM laptop, I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro a few months ago (free DreamSpark account) and I can't get USB 3.0 to work at the speeds at which it needs to work. An 3GB ISO which I copy from my HDD to an USB3.0 USB-stick gets a max speed of 25 mb per second. I have already tried everything I could think of, including the following:
Upgrading Intel chipset drivers from ASUS support site (delete old, install new)Upgrading BIOSINF hack (Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers | Plugable) "Windows 8* has a native in-box USB 3.0 driver. Intel is not releasing a specific Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver for Windows 8."
The driver I have is: imgur: the simple image sharer
The only thing I can think of is maybe mailing ASUS if they can supply a new BIOS revision or mailing Intel if they can supply some new chipset drivers...
EDIT1: A few months back, when the laptop was still running Windows 7, the read/write speeds were "normal", meaning that they were what you would expect from USB 3.0.

I have an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe. It replaces a motherboard that failed. I have moved the Win 7 image over to the new board using a "restore to other hardware" feature in a backup program. It did not work properly. I am not able to get some drivers to install. For various (and sufficient) reasons I really really don't want to do a clean install. When I first booted, it would not even boot until I used Win PE to repair the boot. Various squirrely things are still wrong. Like not being able to see more than one hard drive. Occasional crashes for no obvious reason.
For an SATA controller when I run update driver or running the Intel INF setup program provided by Asus I get a message:
7 series/C216 SATA AHCI controller 1E02 Also This operation requires an interactive windows station.
I have just run the Intel update program and it says it can't identify a device an I need to contact the board manufacturer.
An alternative I am considering is to install a Win 8 update over the Win 7 telling Win 8 to retain my programs, settings, and data. But I am not sure this will get me where I want to go. My major question about that is will the Win 8 installation be clever enough to use all of the driver files from Asus that I have downloaded (and I point it to) rather than installing something like the incorrect ones currently installed?

I use keyboard shortcuts extensively. Some are application specific, some are system shortcuts. I am finding that Windows 8 shortcuts are overriding shortcuts I use in some applications, and I would like to be able to delete or reassign the system shortcut so I can use it in an application. However, while there is a myriad of posts on different people's ideas of "essential" keyboard shortcuts, I can find no information on how to change shortcuts.

Regularly, when using keyboard shortcuts a Keyboard Shortcuts panel appears automatically. I can't find a way to close the panel out.
The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?
Edit: The panel is displayed every time I use a keyboard shortcut.
Solved: To make the panel hide, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Right-cursor-key.

my keyboard doesn't work correctly. In most programs and on webpages, the number keys do not work nor do the special characters accessed through the shift key. Sometimes they act like the space bar, other times they repeat the previously typed alpha character.
All works perfectly in MS Word. The numbers on the keypad do work in all programs. I've checked the control panel and can't find any settings that appear to influence this - no accessibility settings, nothing.

This is weird, occasionally as I open up firefox and go to enter text into any field I notice that I am unable to type. Instead what happens is if I hit a key such as F which is linked to a windows shortcut for files, the files search menu pops up even though i never pressed the windows key at any time. This problem isn't just limited to firefox, once it is started I have a very hard time getting it to being able to type normally. So if there is no shortcut linked to that key, there is no input otherwise i get the shortcuts (H - share, Q - search, etc). Restarting doesn't always work, sometimes all it takes is excessive clicking of a search bar, other times just closing an internet broswer. Pressing the windows key does nothing, and I haven't been able to find a concrete fix for the issue. Is there a way to fix and or avoid this completely?

My laptop is a Samsung, about 9 months old and has a pretty good spec. Suddenly, over the past few days, I've noticed that the keyboard in lagging whenever I'm logged on. It's fine at the login screen but, once I've logged on the problem occurs - and it happens on all programs. I know that this is specifically an issue with Windows 8, as I have a virtual Ubuntu machine on here that is working fine.
None of the keyboard settings have been altered and no new applications have been installed or upgraded recently.

In many programs there are keyboard shortcuts . They are shown as capital letters with a line underneath. How does one use them? I've tried the letter with control key, shift key and alt key and frequently combinations of them but cant get any response.

I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to Windows 8 Pro x64 and then to 8.1 (too many installed programs for a clean install)
Now, when I right click a shortcut and do "Open" or "run as administrator" it does nothing. If I double click it, it works fine. Also, if I try to open a cmd from the bottom left context menu it also doesn't work. I've no problems though to do "open" or "run as administrator" on the actual executable files, the problem is the shortcuts. Obviously there's something in the registry that needs fixing, but I've no idea what. I've tried all the usuals, sfc scanning, ccleaner, etc, but no luck. I tried with shellexview to check what is registered where in the context menu, but I didn't find that very useful either. The same happens in safe mode too.
EDIT:I did assoc .lnk at cmd and returned "lnkfle" and then I did ftype lnkfile and returned that nothing is associated with this. Dunno if that's how it should be in 8, but that's the same winxp returns.

I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 64-Bit on it and I uninstalled AsusDVD after having some issues with it. After I did this my laptop no longer allowed me to play DVDs. Despite having Windows Media Player, which I know plays DVDs since I have it on my desktop.
Is there a way that I can change some settings to use Windows Media Player? When I open "Autoplay" Windows Media Player is not an option to play it on and there isn't anything else on my laptop that can play it. I tried a few different free DVD players, but none were able to play them for some reason.
How I can get Windows Media Player to play DVDs or suggest a free software that I can download that will play DVDs?

My problem is ever since I installed windows 8.1 upgrade my desktop short cuts no longer work. Not even the ones under the new start button. I have to manually go into the programs folder, find the program I want to use and launch it from there. Every time I attempt to launch it through the start button or the desk top my win zip program pops up like it wants to unzip it. It never did this until I I upgraded to 8.1 I wished now I would of made a restore point before upgrading so I could get rid of this god awful 8.1. It has my PC totally messed up in trying to launch programs now.
Also, I suspect the new skydrive has something to do with it since the skydrive folder opens after the win zip program pop's up. I never used skydrive before and to be honest I really don't like it nor do I want it. I feel like it got shoved onto me.
The images shows what happens when I try to access something from the new start button, but I get the same problem if I have a desk top short cut. Surprizingly the control pannel and windows defender still works on the desk top, it's the only thing that does.

I am trying to load Lexmark 5470 printer and get "enable bidirectional communication" error message. I am trying to load it on a brand new Toshiba laptop running 8.1 Suggested fix is to go to "ports" tab in the printer dialog box and enable it. I can't find the enable box to click. Any thoughts on resolving this issue. Both Lexmark and Microsoft won't talk to me w/o a credit card. The ptr is 5 years old and is not worthy of any significant investment, although it did work well.

I recently installed Windows 8.1 Pro x64 and the correct up to date drivers for my hardware. I experience a BSOD, it doesn't go into the BSOD right away but after 15-30 minutes of use I get the BSOD with the "page fault in nonpaged area" message.
I have attached my debugfiles and hope that someone much brighter than me in deciphering these files can lend me a hand at fixing this issue.
Found out it was my new Panda Cloud Free Antivirus. I deleted the POS and installed something else, now no more BSODs.

I tried using this method:
-After installation disconect from internet
-change in registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE -> Change "MediaBootInstall" from "1" to "0"
-type "slmgr /rearm" into a command prompt, waited for confirmation, restart
-after restart, connect to internet, activate
This works fine until rebooting and then asks for activation again.
I have tried three more times without reinstalling and the MediaBootInstall stays at 0 so it doesn't need changing. I type the slmgr /rearm and on reboot when I go to activation menu it says activated, but when I reboot agian it says needs activation.
Not sure what's going on. I thought it was a windows update at first messing with it, but it still does it even without any updates being installed.

I just got three 320GB Seagate drives setup in RAID 0 for Linux, and I decided to also reinstall Windows 8 on my SSD since it started lagging and running slower than normal. While trying to install Windows 8, right after selecting a disk/partition to install to, I got a BSOD about an error in a nonpaged area or something. When I tried to boot into the installer again, I got a BSOD immediately after the logo splashscreen (too quick to see what it was about).
-I'm booting the Windows 8 installer from a Corsair Survivor 64GB USB3.0 flashdrive. I'm gonna try a dvd with a different iso that I downloaded more recently on my laptop.

I built a computer about a year ago and its run fine until about a month ago when my displays started shutting off and not coming back on. The only way I could get my displays to come back on would be to disconnect both monitors and only plug in the monitor that connects with DVI. Connecting the second monitor would cause both to cut out and sometimes BSOD. It seems the same thing was happening with the on-board video. I finally decided to do a fresh Windows 8.1 install and see if the problem persisted. As soon as the I got up and running again I got a BSOD (before installing any drivers). I then did the following tests.
- Ran memtest for 2 passes (no errors)
- Tried my GPU on a different PCI-E slot (Still BSOD)
- Tried unplugging the power from the GPU (Still connected to the PCI-E slot, still BSOD)
I was thinking of trying with the video card out completely but it seems the crash is random and I can't reproduce it.
