So recently I downloaded windows 8.1 onto my Asus laptop and my apps on the start menu will not work. whenever I click on them the apps blink or flash and don't open, I try clicking on them again but same thing happens the screen will blink them disappear again.
View 6 RepliesI have a problem whit my new computer on windows 8. Today I turned on the computer, I login, but then, the start menu app's doesn't work anymore! When I wan't to open skype it doesn't work, when I click on desktop it doesn't open.. I need to click on the windows button every time.
I clicked on the windows button, then the app to go to the desktop was clickable, when I was on the desktop, the start menu doesn't appear if I go whit my mouse left under. If I go whit my mouse right, that menu also doesn't appear. Also some programs doesn't open anymore automatically..
The button for the music also doesn't work, I can't turn of the music etc..
Just tested startisback on this windows 8 service pack aka blue and cant belive that wont show start button on taskbar.Tried restart explorer and restart windows,and wont boot directly to desktop,and still wont show start button.Also tried classic shell and start8,but the the problem remained the same. Probably this is the end of start button and start menu as we know.Porbably in next windows we dont see desktop if windows 8 experience success.

I've spent the last day and a half setting it up.Now I want to make a system image of the C: drive using Paragon.
I do this from a bootable DVD, but it isn't set to boot to the DVD first in the boot order.
I've tried tapping the F11, F8, Del, Esc and F2 keys and it just boots into Windows 8.
My computer which has an ASUS motherboard, shows a message when I boot, saying select "Delete" to boot into the UEFI Bios.
But I can't seem to get either a boot menu of the bios option on the laptop.
Just had this new 8.1 and a bit confused on the start menu, On the windows 7 when I clicked on the start bottom left I had a range of programs there that I could select.
i:e my documents,my pictures,my music,my video control panel,devices and printers,default programs.
How do I get that option to show like that on this 8.1 ....
Using ASUS AI Suite in WINDOWS 8 and know if it works.Repeated searches on internet and ASUS forums are not looking good for this software to work .ASUS tells me the newest one should work,but did not seem positive,then after seeing some comments on internet about crashes of PC. View 4 Replies View RelatedI just got an Asus R510DP-FH11 laptop (Newegg.com - ASUS R510DP-FH11 AMD A-Series A10-5750M (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 750GB HDD 15.6" Notebook Windows 8 (64 bit)) and, after installing a bunch of updates, got Windows 8.1.
When I bring up the start menu, scroll down to the apps menu, and move the mouse at all, it instantly brings me to the desktop where "Asus Installation Wizard" will launch and then immediately tell me that I don't have the supported hardware (even though the Asus Live Update program tells me everything is fine and up to date). I can close it, but it just happens again and again when I visit the apps menu, and ONLY when I visit the apps menu. It doesn't happen on startup or any other time.
how to stop it from launching. I cannot do anything in the apps menu because of this.
3 days before my Windows 8.1 pc wasn't working during log in it showed up with "The System Event Notification Service service failed the sign in."
I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"

And the "sfc/scannow" command shows that there are Corrupted or Missing Files Then I also did these:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth But then also no luck .what to do I updated my PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 4 days before And this happened 3 days before And the PC started to boot from yesterday.
I just installed a fresh copy of windows 8.1 on my Asus N53S laptop that comes stock with Windows 7 and now my keyboard shortcuts for volume do not work. Above the F1-F4 keys i have three buttons to mute, increase and decrease the volume which do not work. The keyboard shortcut's for muting, decreasing and increasing volume do not work either (Fn+F10-F12) but the shortcut for decreasing brightness and turning the screen off works (Fn+F5-F7) If there is any way to get this working again.

There are various options there to choose from, but whichever one I choose, it keeps going back to boot menu. I've tried using the novo button, but it still doesn't work. Whatever I choose from the novo button screen, except "BIOS setup", keeps taking me back to the boot menu. My laptop won't start up.

I've read online that you should be able to delete them by going into the program files folder for "Wildtangent games" but the problem is that I ACCIDENTALLY DELETED THAT FOLDER PERMANENTLY, so now when I click on "open file location" I get this games window that I cant do anything with:
I already tried re-installing wildtangent games to see if that would somehow re-instate access to these games' files in program files, but to no avail.
Is there still some way to make it so they dont show up?
In the midst of trying to remove bloatware I have been removing bloatware and its shortcuts from the start menu and respective folders. However, I am running into a snag. There was a wildtangent games folder installed with a bunch of games. I remove everything associated with it, but there are still links in the start menu. I checked the start menu folders and I cannot find the links and whenever I click open file location it brings up the came browser and it shows a bunch of blank links. Pics are attached.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWithin the last month or so, shortcuts on the start menu haven't been refreshing when their respective icons actually change. This only pertains to 3rd party programs and games--not those downloaded from the Microsoft store or included in Windows by default. For example, Steam recently changed the design of their logo. This change was never reflected in the start menu.
There are at least several other apps, like the PortableApps launcher, that the same is happening to. I've actually had to go to the entry in appdata and completely remove them and re-add them to get the changes to show. Never had an issue with anything like this until relatively recently, though I can't place one particular event as being definitive. It may have been like this for even longer and I wouldn't have known until a few things updated anyway.
See system spec for details, as everything is up-to-date. It would be nice for software to update icons and have those changes reflected rather than having to add manually.

I did not have a problem with the same download on a Vista machine. I sent an email to SourceForge. No response yet.
I just did a fresh install of 8.1 pro on my computer with an SSD. When i click the start button and use the apps window(not metro) to launch desktop programs they load extremely slow. The start menu doesn't even close on its own when i click to launch a program either i have to manually close it then a few seconds later the program will launch. When i open the program from explorer it loads instantly but for whatever reason doing anything through the new start menu is extremely slow.

Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?
When you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.

I have 3 user accounts.
1. Administrator
2. initial user
3. new user
So the initial user is the one you are forced to create when first setting up Windows 8.1. It's a local user meaning that I set it up without signing into a MSA.
In both the Administrator and the initial user, all the WinRT apps/tiles work. Like the weather will show up and everything.
Whether I change the Initial User to Standard or Administrator, everything still works fine. Of course, the Administrator can't open WinRT apps which is standard and normal. And the initial user can't use apps without signing into MSA. But it all still works perfectly fine.
The problem is with the new user. The new user is meant to be in Administrator mode because it's my main account. But whether I set it up as Standard or Administrator, it's the same thing. None of my WinRT apps work.
Even when I sign into my MSA with the new user, it's still the same thing. It synchronizes to my OneDrive online. It recognizes that I'm completely signed in online. Yet it's still the exact same thing with the WinRT apps. None of them work. Even when I try to open up the Windows Store. It just continues to try to open, but doesn't go all the way through. So whether I'm signed into my MSA for the third user or not, it still gives the same problem.
I ran Windows Update, and it worked perfectly. Everything is up to date.
Im referring to this bottom menu; when I right click my app/programs, nothing pops up below. I also cant rearrange tiles, groups and stuff.

I see there is a Classic Start 8 Menu that once installed will give you back the Windows 7 style menu. If you install it, can you still go back to the default Windows 8 Start page if you like?

i do not want the very old Start Menu in Windows 8.1.
Installed Launch 8 from Stardock and suddenly i have the old Start Menu on the bottom.
I guess MS is trying to change the new Start Menu. Even in the APPS menu you get the Start Menu.
This does not happen on every pc overhere, but certainly on 2 of the 4.
Gotta love having the old start menu back
