Classic Start 8 Menu And Default Start Page
Nov 23, 2012I see there is a Classic Start 8 Menu that once installed will give you back the Windows 7 style menu. If you install it, can you still go back to the default Windows 8 Start page if you like?

I regularly change my sound card settings, and in vista and windows 7 i could just type "sound card" and hit enter. Now i have to type "sound card", press the down arrow twice, then press enter twice.
Windows 8.1 Apps Won't Start From Start Menu
Feb 10, 20143 days before my Windows 8.1 pc wasn't working during log in it showed up with "The System Event Notification Service service failed the sign in."
I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"
And my Start menu is like this:
And the "sfc/scannow" command shows that there are Corrupted or Missing Files Then I also did these:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth But then also no luck .what to do I updated my PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 4 days before And this happened 3 days before And the PC started to boot from yesterday.
Start Menu Apps Doesn't Work Anymore
Feb 23, 2013I have a problem whit my new computer on windows 8. Today I turned on the computer, I login, but then, the start menu app's doesn't work anymore! When I wan't to open skype it doesn't work, when I click on desktop it doesn't open.. I need to click on the windows button every time.
I clicked on the windows button, then the app to go to the desktop was clickable, when I was on the desktop, the start menu doesn't appear if I go whit my mouse left under. If I go whit my mouse right, that menu also doesn't appear. Also some programs doesn't open anymore automatically..
The button for the music also doesn't work, I can't turn of the music etc..

Jun 3, 2014So recently I downloaded windows 8.1 onto my Asus laptop and my apps on the start menu will not work. whenever I click on them the apps blink or flash and don't open, I try clicking on them again but same thing happens the screen will blink them disappear again.

I've read online that you should be able to delete them by going into the program files folder for "Wildtangent games" but the problem is that I ACCIDENTALLY DELETED THAT FOLDER PERMANENTLY, so now when I click on "open file location" I get this games window that I cant do anything with:
I already tried re-installing wildtangent games to see if that would somehow re-instate access to these games' files in program files, but to no avail.
Is there still some way to make it so they dont show up?

Jan 17, 2014In the midst of trying to remove bloatware I have been removing bloatware and its shortcuts from the start menu and respective folders. However, I am running into a snag. There was a wildtangent games folder installed with a bunch of games. I remove everything associated with it, but there are still links in the start menu. I checked the start menu folders and I cannot find the links and whenever I click open file location it brings up the came browser and it shows a bunch of blank links. Pics are attached.

Aug 28, 2014Within the last month or so, shortcuts on the start menu haven't been refreshing when their respective icons actually change. This only pertains to 3rd party programs and games--not those downloaded from the Microsoft store or included in Windows by default. For example, Steam recently changed the design of their logo. This change was never reflected in the start menu.
There are at least several other apps, like the PortableApps launcher, that the same is happening to. I've actually had to go to the entry in appdata and completely remove them and re-add them to get the changes to show. Never had an issue with anything like this until relatively recently, though I can't place one particular event as being definitive. It may have been like this for even longer and I wouldn't have known until a few things updated anyway.
See system spec for details, as everything is up-to-date. It would be nice for software to update icons and have those changes reflected rather than having to add manually.

Apr 8, 2014I just did a fresh install of 8.1 pro on my computer with an SSD. When i click the start button and use the apps window(not metro) to launch desktop programs they load extremely slow. The start menu doesn't even close on its own when i click to launch a program either i have to manually close it then a few seconds later the program will launch. When i open the program from explorer it loads instantly but for whatever reason doing anything through the new start menu is extremely slow.

Mar 30, 2014I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).
Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?

How To Make Task Menu Launch From Start Menu
Jun 14, 2013When you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
Change Menu Background Color In Win 8.1? NOT Start Menu
Jun 22, 2014I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.

Sep 15, 2014Some of the taskbar menus have appeared to have shrunk in size, especially on chrome. I fiddled with the sizing of my windows in the Personalization menu in Windows but this doesn't seem to have fixed it. On chrome m tabs are smaller and the text and buttons on websites and address bar are smaller as well. Skype and Word seem to be okay.
Or I could be losing my mind. Is there a way to reset all sizes via Windows to their default settings for all programs?
I did install Rainmeter last night but I don't think it has anything to do with it.

Apr 7, 2014I have a Dell inspirion 15 laptop running Windows 8.1. A while ago I decided to try Ubuntu out. I installed it alongside Windows 8.1 in dual boot configuration with its own separate hard drive partitions. This means that when I powered on my laptop a GRUB menu (Linux boot manager) would come up allowing me to choose between Windows and Ubuntu. However, Ubuntu was more pain than it was worth so I decided to uninstall it. I did this by deleting the hard drive partitions that Ubuntu was installed on using Windows Disk Management. Now when I power on my laptop the GRUB menu still comes up but there are no options to choose from, only a command line interface. I now have to type Code: exit
which exits GRUB and takes me to my BIOS Boot Manager which looks like this:

Why GRUB is still there even though I have deleted the Linux hard drive partitions? Also, why is Ubuntu still listed on the BIOS Boot options? And why is it listed twice?

Sep 12, 2013I have Office 2010 which came preinstalled on my Dell 8300 XPS. I have the key and have recovered the program in the past.
If I Refresh my pc, and find the folder Windows. Old, can I get the Office program out of it or do I have to download from a site and install again?
Obviously I don't know what is in the folder nor what it allows you to retrieve . I do know that when done with it you can delete it.
I can retrieve some of the programs and apps that refresh removes and that is not hard to do. Perhaps I just open the folder, locate the program, and copy and paste it or click 'reinstall'.

Jun 7, 2014I have a serious problem with my computer i got a virus that deselected my graphics card and wouldn't allow me to go in bios so i thought that a factory restore would do it, unfortunately i was wrong. It turned off the computer and when i try to start it it just goes to a black screen for about an hour then goes to like some kind of power save mode where the power button is flashing and i tried to turn it on again and the same thing happened. My screen works just fine but it says it dosen't get any input so my computer just isn't displaying anything. I am really scared and don't know what to do?

I consider myself an advanced user, but I still overlook a lot of things and make mistakes like everyone.
Basically, Windows 8.1's Metro apps and tiles keep refreshing to default settings like it's the first time I've used them or opened them.
When I go to use Skype, it will always ask if it is allowed to use my webcam and microphone. It seems to remember the settings for a while, then forgets them.
I'm assuming this is CCleaner related, but I unchecked all of the settings that correspond to the Metro applications, and this changes nothing.
I'm unsure if I am actually deleting important information Windows needs without knowing. I usually delete logs on top of the usual things to keep my computer clean.
Run Shortcuts That Are Under Start Menu
Oct 29, 2013I've installed some software that runs on the Desktop. On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?
