View 1 RepliesI have a serious problem with my computer i got a virus that deselected my graphics card and wouldn't allow me to go in bios so i thought that a factory restore would do it, unfortunately i was wrong. It turned off the computer and when i try to start it it just goes to a black screen for about an hour then goes to like some kind of power save mode where the power button is flashing and i tried to turn it on again and the same thing happened. My screen works just fine but it says it dosen't get any input so my computer just isn't displaying anything. I am really scared and don't know what to do?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI got a 2013 HP laptop Windows 8 and when I attempt to do recovery, restore or even a Img bkup it goes to a black screen with mouse cursor that I'm able to move around but it does nothing else even if I let it sit for hours. I tried to use the built hp software to make a factory recovery disc but it said there was no recovery partition as if it were deleted but in fact a quick look with windows explorer shows it does exists and it perfectly intact plus the disk management shows it intact, healthy and labeled as recovery. As I said before I can reboot into the menu to choose to recover, restore and everything else but once I select one i get the black screen with the mouse arrow. Im trying to avoid buying the discs from hp. Would there be something possibly hiding or blocking the recovery partition ? Maybe a bad registry entry ? I've tried setting folder options to show hidden files and system files.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen?
I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
Windows 8 start screen is not loading? I am using task manager to open my computer and everything else?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to find any way to lock my start screen once I get my apps organized and just the way I want them. Is there no way to lock your apps so that they can't be rearranged by someone? If not then that seems like a glaring omission. I spend a great deal of time arranging it and then my three year old comes along and messes it all up. I would like to prevent this. I know I can create a user password and just not let any use on it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAt least Windows 8 makes it easy to create a Start Screen tile for a program, or for a folder. But if you have a FILE that you open often (like a Word file, a Notepad file, or a PDF) and you want a tile to open it, there's no ready-made way to create one.
But you can do it this way. Open your Start Menu folder, which is C:Users(Your Username)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms (It's a hidden folder, so just paste the above path into the File Explorer address bar.)
Then open the folder containing your file. Right-click the file's icon and select "Copy." Then right-click in the Start Menu folder and select NOT "Paste," but "Paste Shortcut."
This makes the shortcut look like an "App" to Windows 8, so if you then go to the Metro Search Screen and search for "Apps" it will come up there, and you can right-click it and "Pin to Start."
When I am away from the computer for maybe an hour or more and come back, the Start Screen will not operate, I have to keep rebooting my machine. It is getting frustrating. I have changed the settings to NOT allow hibernation of the computer to include the hard disk drive when not in use; however, the Start Screen after non-use does not want to work, freezes. What can I do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was hoping to get the start screen to be transparent so that it simply overlays the traditional desktop and windows. I think this would give win8 on a desktop a much more complete feel.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am searching for a document from the Start Screen, then I click files to see the list of docs. When I click on a doc to open it, it goes into desktop mode to view the Word doc. After viewing the file, how do I get back to the list of search results? It seems like I have to recreate the search everytime after viewing a file.

I usually able to use Right click and I can put my Application to my start screen but today I unable to do that and I don't know why ?
I right on my app but nothing happen . only check mark appear
After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedPlaying around with Win 8 and found that it's not easy to pin a file or a web site (if you're not using IE) to the new start screen. Some have suggested downloading a nice little utility that will do the job, but I always try to avoid having a lot of single purpose, rarely used utilities.
Here's a way to accomplish the same task that I discovered by some trial and error.
Go to the desktop. Create a shortcut to an app (firefox if you want to pin a web site, excel if you want to pin a spreadsheet, etc.), giving the shortcut the name of the file or web site you want to pin to the start screen.
Once the shortcut to the app is created, right click on the shortcut, click properties. Go to the target line and add a space, then within quotes add the website or the file you want to access (if a file, add the entire file path and file name).
Click Apply
Right click the shortcut and you will now see the "Pin to Start" option. Click this option.
You can now delete the shortcut on the desktop (unless you want to keep the shortcut on the desktop and the start screen).
Go to the start screen. You will see the new shortcut which executes with a single click or touch.
Examples of a website shortcut Target line and file shortcut Target line are shown below.
"C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" "http://www.eightforums.com/"
"C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12EXCEL.EXE" "C:UsersUserNameDocumentsExcelFileFolderSampleFile.xlsx".
Title says it all. You can restart Windows explorer via task manager, but can I do the same with start screen? Because I changed the amount of tile rows on it, but I have to log off. Unfortunately, I am running a server which people are on currently and I'd hate having to wait a couple more hours to try this..

View 3 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago my start screen was suddenly different. Instead of the apps being visible across the whole screen it has been shrunk to fit only half the screen. I've had a kitten stepping all over my keyboard and this may or may not have to do with it. I've looked for a menu option to change it but can't find anything. I've tried just zooming out but it doesn't affect it. How can I make the start screen how it originally was?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I right-click on something on the Start Screen, the customize menu doesn't appear. One day it just stopped appearing, and I don't know why. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have two Windows 8 installs, one on my desktop HDD, and another on my laptop's. My laptop broke, so i took the HDD and hooked it up to the extra SATA on my desktop for extra storage. For one reason or another, my desktop install decided to stop working, and I couldn't find the disk I used to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 so I could refresh/restore it. I went to boot to my laptop install to use it for a while (as safe mode wouldnt work on my desktop install anyways) and that worked for a few days, but now the start screen freezes and I have to open task manager and move it to my other screen with Win+Shift+left, and end explorer.exe. Of course, since that doesnt work, I cant use the create a recovery disc utility.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have win 8.1 x64 Core installed. The thing is, i want to remove some items from my start screen and right clicking does not bring up any menu (which it used to on my previous win 8.1, this is new installation).
WEe, I deleted some files which were actually looking like shortcuts (had arrow below icons, like shortcuts) in C:Users (and directories in it), thinking that these shortcuts are just useless. And I think this somehow caused the problem. now I want to remove a few thing from my start screen and no option is appearing. Is there any way to manually remove them?
Same thing happens in the "detailed" start screen, the checkmark appears, but no menu to do anything.
I have organized the apps on my start screen and named/renamed the groups they occupy. I have decided that I want to combine the apps in two of the groups into one group. How can I delete one of the groups and move their apps to the other group?
View 9 Replies View Related1. New apps from the Windows Store, and also new x86 software programs are not being pinned once they have installed. I have to manually pin them from the All Apps screen.
2. When I right click a modern app on the Start Screen and press 'Uninstall', the app doesn't actually uninstall. I have to then go and do the same thing from the All Apps screen to uninstall the app.
