Close Programs To Start Screen
Jun 14, 2014When modern Apps are closed, they can be made to close to the Start Screen. Is there a way of making Desktop programs do the same. For example: Firefox, my word processor etc.?

View 4 RepliesAlways keep a list of disabled services as you disable them! I spent a dramatic amount of time referencing 2-3 resources for each service I disabled and have had no issues up until now. I disabled a few in a row without restarting and managed to forget which they were. this has caused two issues If I can't/don't - the end result will be me having to reset them all to default, go through them one by one again - AND STILL not know which was the one(s) that caused my problem(s) which will risk the same thing happening again.
1) I set an account picture to my Microsoft.net account for windows 8.1x64 (the one that pops up when you turn on your PC and have to enter your password right after the lock screen but before windows) and after a restart, it disappears and goes back to the default grey square with a white outline of an avatar)
2) all my installed programs disappeared on the start screen! It's literally blank. I didn't have much due to it being a fairly new install but they all disappeared including PC settings and metro store (the two metro apps I had left). I checked if the apps still worked (mumble for example because it also disappeared) and they did, but if you go under program data/start menu/programs etc, all the folders with the app shortcuts in them are gone!
I tried to reinstall mumble; and it reinstalled fine, but still NO folder w shortcut being placed in the start menu therefore nothing being put on the start/apps screen. What on earth could be doing this service wise?
I would like to run all my programs directly from the start screen, not switching to desktop view. My friend has Windows 8 and he is running everything directly from start screen mode. I have Win 8.1 and I don't want to go to the desktop mode since then programs run under desktop and loose the functions available in start screen mode.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHow big this new 8.1 update is and can it be downloaded as an iso? Also, does it contain any driver updates. I installed Win 8 on a Vista machine and it runs well, except for an annoying blank flicker that occurs when I open and close programs. Tried both a Vista and Win7 video driver but made no difference.

How can I suppress the display of the Close All Tabs - Close Current Tab question and still be able to close just one tab?

So recently after the windows update. The one that makes Windows 8.1 more "keyboard and mouse" friendly
Every time i restart my computer,it logs in quiche but the start up programs take forever to run around 3~5
The list of start programs is there on the screen shot
The rest of them are disabled
I am well versed in malware as I am moving through training at MRU (under a different name), and I know my issue is not a malware issue.
It has windows 8. I set myself up as admin, and him up as a child user. All has worked perfectly.
Last night, he was playing with it, and he changed the resolution from 1366 x 768 to 1280 x 720. He then changed it back. No harm no foul, right? However, now several of the programs wont start or maximize when logged into his account. For example, if I log in as myself, the kindle app will start without a problem. If I log in as him, i get the splash screen, and then it quickly shifts to the metro app screen with no evidence of the app.
Switching to the "desktop" view, I can see the kindle app on the taskbar, but it will not expand. A lot of research led me to understand this could be a resolution issue, but we switched it back to the original. It obviously could be lots of other things as well. I am seeing the same behavior in about half of the apps on the computer.
Within 24-hours I come a long way from Windows 7 to Windows 8 which I'm not too impress with right now -- I found a way to get the Start Menu Button back onto my computer, but I don't know how to load programs on it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI find it irritating to have to scroll to "page 2" of the start bar using the little arrows.
Just because I have a lot of programs open at the same time.
Is there anyway that I can get all open programs to display on the same "page" of the bar?
I think it used to be possible in earlier versions of windows.
Where to go to make programs start in conjunction with the machine starting? I want Outlook, Word, ACDSee and Google Earth to start with the machine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAt the moment I am still using Win 7 whilst I get Win 8 to my liking.
Prior to Win 8 you were able to set a program to start in a particular folder where all the relevant files for the program were stored.
I'd like to know if any of you guys have experienced this issue where when you try to open a metro app you get the splash screen for it and then just a few seconds later you're sent back to the start screen with no explanation whatsoever. It's doing my head in since I can't seem to find a fix - Google returns lots of posts about this issue coming from the win 8 beta, but none of the fixes I've seen seem to work.
It also doesn't happen with all apps. I can open the Music, Messaging or Games apps just fine, but if I try to open the metro Reader app or the Hulu/Netflix apps I downloaded from the store they just won't get pass this screen.
A few weeks ago, after using the computer for some time, (The problem doesn't start until a few hours later) my programs won't start up unless running as administrator. All programs. Including notepad. (not sure about cmd) I have not done a full scan on my computer because it estimates more than one day and the estimated time still extends.
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor example it starts SpeedFan without any problem, and with same settings, or even in the same Task, if I add for example other .exe software like FTP server software Gene6 FTP Server it simply doesn't start for any reason and nothing happens and it has to be started manually by mouse-clicking on .exe each time computer is booted up.
On Last Run Result column it says 0x800702E4. And it gives various 0x results for various programs that don't run.
Also simply dragging shortcuts to Startup folder don't work either. But like I said, not all .exe programs, some work and some don't, just like 50/50 I simply don't get it.
I use Comodo Antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall, but all those programs I need has 100% permissions granted.
The programs and features box is not at the bottom of my screen where can it be ...
View 7 Replies View RelatedI sometimes gets blue screen, even when I am not running any programs.
Please review this attached file.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
I just got Windows 8 and tried disabling the log-in screen. I went into "netplwiz" now I seem to have lost my administrative powers.
I can't download programs or access the "user accounts" tab in the control panel. Every time I try to do something that would require admin powers, I get a "user account control" prompt that tells me that if I, "want to allow the following programs to make changes to this computer," that I need to enter an administrator password and then click yes.
But there is no text box to enter a password and the "yes" button is grayed out. My only option is to hit "no" or "show details."
When I go into "PC Settings" and the "users" tab, it says that "there are no other users on this PC" and "Sign in as an administrator to add users to this PC." But how do I do that?
I've tried going into the "run" operation and entered "net user administrator /active:yes" command, but nothing happens. I also tried entering "msconfig" but I ran into the same problem of not having admin powers to do that. I tried starting in safe mode by jamming shift and F8 but that didn't work either.
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?

I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
When I play games or use any sort of full screen program, it refuse to stay in full screen and flickers to the desktop after a 10-30 minute period...I'm aware this is probably another program trying to take control, but I can't seem to pin it down. I've tried disabling startup programs through task manager and I've also tried ending background process, with no success.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.
I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.
On Windows 8.1, when I open Programs and Features in Control Panel, it does not show all of my installed programs. I am trying to remove some programs and they are not listed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to find any way to lock my start screen once I get my apps organized and just the way I want them. Is there no way to lock your apps so that they can't be rearranged by someone? If not then that seems like a glaring omission. I spend a great deal of time arranging it and then my three year old comes along and messes it all up. I would like to prevent this. I know I can create a user password and just not let any use on it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAt least Windows 8 makes it easy to create a Start Screen tile for a program, or for a folder. But if you have a FILE that you open often (like a Word file, a Notepad file, or a PDF) and you want a tile to open it, there's no ready-made way to create one.
But you can do it this way. Open your Start Menu folder, which is C:Users(Your Username)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms (It's a hidden folder, so just paste the above path into the File Explorer address bar.)
Then open the folder containing your file. Right-click the file's icon and select "Copy." Then right-click in the Start Menu folder and select NOT "Paste," but "Paste Shortcut."
This makes the shortcut look like an "App" to Windows 8, so if you then go to the Metro Search Screen and search for "Apps" it will come up there, and you can right-click it and "Pin to Start."
When I am away from the computer for maybe an hour or more and come back, the Start Screen will not operate, I have to keep rebooting my machine. It is getting frustrating. I have changed the settings to NOT allow hibernation of the computer to include the hard disk drive when not in use; however, the Start Screen after non-use does not want to work, freezes. What can I do?
