When I am away from the computer for maybe an hour or more and come back, the Start Screen will not operate, I have to keep rebooting my machine. It is getting frustrating. I have changed the settings to NOT allow hibernation of the computer to include the hard disk drive when not in use; however, the Start Screen after non-use does not want to work, freezes. What can I do?
I recently did a refresh of Windows 8, not by choice but I was getting BSOD on boot after a bad install of nfs+ paragon .
Anyways I reinstalled almost everything but I have this problem that I notice as a audio problem at first but seems to be much bigger. I will open a video on youtube say, the video will play but there will be no audio. I go to open the audio control panel or anything pertaining to it, the window for it will either freeze or refuse to open at all. Aside from that, after I noticed this or even before I notice this I also can't open up most apps, noticeably steam games, they will start too load but then freeze on load. No Idea what is causing this and I don't know what else to upgrade driver wise. Very fed up since the refresh could have been avoided in the first place...
I recently installed windows 8.1 pro x64 on my laptop which is acer 5755g.but i've a very strange problem with that. When I want to go afk before leaving laptop i press windows + l key and go to lock screen everything is ok now but when I'm coming back in few hours laptop is freezes and must shut it down from power button.
I tried: installed windows again updated all of drivers using coolpad
Whenever I start a flight in Flight Simulator X(FSX), the screen is frozen but I can hear the aircraft's engine sound. Also the controls are working as I can hear the engine turn ON and OFF when I control it through my keyboard.
I can see my cursor and move it. Also pressing ESC shows End Flight, Continue Flying and View flight analysis option. On pressing continue flying I get a black screen with sound still working. If I do End flight and restart a flight I again get a black screen.
I used to play Flight Simulator X(FSX) in Windows 7 earlier, I upgraded to Windows 8 last year and installed FSX which worked pretty well. After a month I tried to uninstall it which was unsuccessful because of an error which its setup showed. So I deleted the FSX folder in Microsoft Games. Now after a few months when I tried reinstalling FSX, it showed "Error 1628 : Failed to complete installation". I got rid of that error by installing FSX from a new Windows user account. Before installing I deleted FSX folder in %appdata%/Roaming and all other folders mentioned here : How to uninstall and reinstall FSX - PMDG Simulations
Nvidia website automatic check states that my graphics drivers are latest and do not need any updates. Also other games such as GTA SA and Team Fortress 2 are working with this current graphics card. I tried repairing the installation from setup but still the screen freeze is persistent.
It works when I press alt+enter, i.e change full-screen mode to windowed mode until I change something on the screen like opening GPS, changing views for which I have to change my window size by dragging its border with cursor.
I have the Asus Netbook and I updated the software.
But now it has completed its updating but the screen freezes, I can't touch screen anything and only can lock and unlock the screen. It also cannot shut down, so do I wait for it to run out of battery?
I just recently installed a new anti-virus software (Kaskersky Anti-Virus 2013) and it runs perfectly (or so I thought).
The only problem that was plaguing my computer was after I restarted it (via the Sidebar and pressing the power icon and clicking restart) and it would "hang" at the restart screen for about 30 seconds.
The pixel icon next to the word "Restarting" would freeze mid spin (I could still move my mouse), but then it would continue to function normally.
So my question is simply: Is this an issue to take action against or is the Anti-Virus software preventing a proper restart?
NOTE: When I start a normal "Shutdown" this problem is absent and the computer shuts down in about 6 seconds.
My windows 8 pc when booted, mostly freezes after i see my account picture with a circling dots. Then appears a black screen and just my cursors, but nothing else. I try to get task manager and run explorer.exe but it doesn't work. It has now been happening very much. I have installed the OS just a few days back and i got this issue. This also happens when i sign out/switch from my account to another account.
I recently purchased a new Asus N550JV Laptop, I down loaded and installed Europa Universalis IV through steam, the game appears to load ok, but once it gets to the menu screen, the screen glitches & freezes, it then crashes to blue screen.
I've had a non paged fault in paged area & kernel securit check failure.
I am having trouble installing windows 8 on my PC. So I slow burnt the ISO as I always do, and verified the contents. Now I always do a clean install never an upgrade. When I boot from DVD I get to the windows 8 logo and my DVD drive and hard drive seem to be loading files (although this edition has no load progress bar like the previous windows which is annoying) after several seconds i get the animation of the dots twisting but there's no activity?
The disc stops reading the hdd does nothing and the splash screen continuously mocks me it just doesn't get past that screen. After several attempts I thought I could try an upgrade from desktop instead. After a successful upgrade my pc reboots and gets stuck on that same splash screen it just doesn't want to get past that screen. I have looked all over the forums and googled various keywords to find others with this problem and have had no luck. It is noteworthy to mention that windows 7 runs perfectly with no problem on my PC and I am attempting to install the 32bit version I have tried widows 8 an windows 8 pro with no luck
My specs are as follows
HP Compact Presario SR1719UK -AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.20ghz -1GB DDR RAM -ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series (Approx total memory is 287MB) -PHEONIX - AWARD BIOS v6.00 -DirectX 11 with WDDM 1.0 driver
I recently bought a Samsung EVO 840 120 gb SSD and did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro on it. Also formatted my other HDD's. And after that I started to experience at random times the complete freeze of windows and sometimes blue screen of death with "clock watchdog timeout" message. They usually happens when I unpacking an archive, during file copy, downloading big files, installing mods in nexus mod manager for skyrim or sometimes just in very random events. I noticed that usually when this happens hdd activity led on my pc case blinks continuously. When this freeze or BSOD happens I need to manually reset my computer.
(Also most of the archives I download from the internet I get crc errors for most when I try to unpack them, so I have redownload it again :/)
My system: OS: Windows 8.1 Pro CPU: AMD Bulldozer FX 8150 Eight core Black Edition CPU Cooling: Hydro Series H60 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler Motherboard: GA-970A-D3 (Rev. 1.0) Memory: hiper blue 8 GB DDR 3 Graphics Card: Gigabyte AMD HD 6970 2 GB PSU: Gigabyte 650 W Hard Drives: -Samsung EVO 840 SSD 120 GB (OS) -Samsung HDD 500 GB -WD HDD 2 TB
Nothing is overclocked. Everything has the latest drivers. Bios is updated to the latest.
I did CPU stress test got no errors. I did GPU stress test got no errors. I did RAM test got no errors.
Hey, for like the 8th time now I've had to format my computer due to a blue screen error. The last error was HAL.dll missing or corrupted. My boot sector or whatever the correct name for it is, keeps getting corrupted and it will never repair, it just freezes at 2% and keeps looping. The drive I am using is the Corsair 240GB FORCE 3 SSD and I am not sure if the problem is due to SSD being bad or my motherboard being too old. I have the ASUS Striker II Extreme...
My second problem is, on my latest format, Windows 8 refuses to activate, it claims I cannot do a clean install and this is what I have been doing all the time. The other thing is that I cannot complete a Windows update, when it restarts, it says it has failed and rolls back the changes. I am not sure if this is because it wont activate but.
Now Windows has a problem with showing my real location, so I am getting the wrong weather reports and so on. One more thing I forgot to mention, I can't even check my system rating. Last time I did I check before the format my system was rated as 6.6, that was my lowest rated hardware and that was the SSD. Is that a normal score for an SSD?
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
In Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen?
I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
When I try to add a shortcut to the start screen I get a message 'No such interface supported' When I install a new program or game it wont add the shortcut to the start menu even if I have ticked 'add shortcut to start menu. All games and programs run fine, I just cant add a shortcut. How to solve it?
I can't seem to find any way to lock my start screen once I get my apps organized and just the way I want them. Is there no way to lock your apps so that they can't be rearranged by someone? If not then that seems like a glaring omission. I spend a great deal of time arranging it and then my three year old comes along and messes it all up. I would like to prevent this. I know I can create a user password and just not let any use on it.
At least Windows 8 makes it easy to create a Start Screen tile for a program, or for a folder. But if you have a FILE that you open often (like a Word file, a Notepad file, or a PDF) and you want a tile to open it, there's no ready-made way to create one.
But you can do it this way. Open your Start Menu folder, which is C:Users(Your Username)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms (It's a hidden folder, so just paste the above path into the File Explorer address bar.)
Then open the folder containing your file. Right-click the file's icon and select "Copy." Then right-click in the Start Menu folder and select NOT "Paste," but "Paste Shortcut."
This makes the shortcut look like an "App" to Windows 8, so if you then go to the Metro Search Screen and search for "Apps" it will come up there, and you can right-click it and "Pin to Start."
I was hoping to get the start screen to be transparent so that it simply overlays the traditional desktop and windows. I think this would give win8 on a desktop a much more complete feel.
I am searching for a document from the Start Screen, then I click files to see the list of docs. When I click on a doc to open it, it goes into desktop mode to view the Word doc. After viewing the file, how do I get back to the list of search results? It seems like I have to recreate the search everytime after viewing a file.
When I am in my start screen and I touch my desktop tile to get into my desktop I don't get into it. I either get into IE or into the last website I have been in and not closed. Can I sort this out?
After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?
Playing around with Win 8 and found that it's not easy to pin a file or a web site (if you're not using IE) to the new start screen. Some have suggested downloading a nice little utility that will do the job, but I always try to avoid having a lot of single purpose, rarely used utilities.
Here's a way to accomplish the same task that I discovered by some trial and error.
Go to the desktop. Create a shortcut to an app (firefox if you want to pin a web site, excel if you want to pin a spreadsheet, etc.), giving the shortcut the name of the file or web site you want to pin to the start screen.
Once the shortcut to the app is created, right click on the shortcut, click properties. Go to the target line and add a space, then within quotes add the website or the file you want to access (if a file, add the entire file path and file name).
Click Apply Right click the shortcut and you will now see the "Pin to Start" option. Click this option. You can now delete the shortcut on the desktop (unless you want to keep the shortcut on the desktop and the start screen). Go to the start screen. You will see the new shortcut which executes with a single click or touch.
Examples of a website shortcut Target line and file shortcut Target line are shown below.
Title says it all. You can restart Windows explorer via task manager, but can I do the same with start screen? Because I changed the amount of tile rows on it, but I have to log off. Unfortunately, I am running a server which people are on currently and I'd hate having to wait a couple more hours to try this..
i have recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8, the start screen apps/buttons are not working, they have never worked, when i click on one it just pops up for 1 second and comes back out, it refuses to load them, i have looked online and tried editing my resolution or whatever people have said to do, but none of it seems to work, what do i do?
A few weeks ago my start screen was suddenly different. Instead of the apps being visible across the whole screen it has been shrunk to fit only half the screen. I've had a kitten stepping all over my keyboard and this may or may not have to do with it. I've looked for a menu option to change it but can't find anything. I've tried just zooming out but it doesn't affect it. How can I make the start screen how it originally was?
When I right-click on something on the Start Screen, the customize menu doesn't appear. One day it just stopped appearing, and I don't know why. It's the same if I want to pin something to it from the page with All Apps. I've uploaded a screenshot where I right-clicked on the "Food & Drink" app.
