i have recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8, the start screen apps/buttons are not working, they have never worked, when i click on one it just pops up for 1 second and comes back out, it refuses to load them, i have looked online and tried editing my resolution or whatever people have said to do, but none of it seems to work, what do i do?
View 3 RepliesAbout three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
I installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed a copy of Windows 8 Professional. The "Live Tiles" on my new Start screen aren't working. I can click on the Store icon and it comes up, then immediately closes. I've turned off live updating and turned on app locations and all that. It still won't come on.
I've tried it with all my new apps, and none of them work, except for the Maps app.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?

After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. View 9 Replies View RelatedAs I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?

This way I can't rearrange any apps, can't add any of them to start screen to, nothing.. I can only open them. After upgrading (in-place) to 8.1 Pro, all of the traditional applications and their shortcuts in the traditional program menu were still there, but the Tiles on the Metro start screen were gone.
How can I recreate Metro Tiles for my traditional desktop applications?
I would like to run all my programs directly from the start screen, not switching to desktop view. My friend has Windows 8 and he is running everything directly from start screen mode. View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, I have been trying to rid my Toshiba Satellite of a ton of bloatware they put on a new laptop running Windows 8. There are also some unnecessary Windows 8 tiles I can't get rid of from the big blue Metro start up screen.
Some, the ones that I guess are "apps" I can right click on, select "unpin" and they're gone, but others I cannot get rid of
Here's how my problem presents:
I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop
I'd love to be able to delete these tiles (some games, but also a number of Toshiba programs I'm never going to use.) But I've been unable to find the key.
I was installed some apps from Windows Store (TuneIn, Adobe Photoshop Express, etc...), and... I cant find they shortcuts ...

So there's my start screen and as you can see, the only program that is not Windows' built-in is Skype but actually I've installed several programs. The problem is, the installed programs don't appear on the start screen, like what windows 8.0 did. They showed on the app screen. My windows is MSDN 8.1 Pro.

I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"

In Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen?
I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
I updated windows 8.1 pro with wmc from store.I had NO problems, received no error messages, had no dc's, the power didn't shut off, the download didn't stop .. literally nothing went wrong. After update everything worked fine. All the apps are downloaded and were working fine.
But,After 2/3 months since updated, I suddenly noticed that every live tile / folder / app / game / setting etc. which were working fine, now not working.When I clicked on any tile, nothing happened. It just went to a blank green screen because my background color is green. It appears on the left upper corner as opened but doesn't run. When I click, I am send back to Start Screen or Desktop. Even Store and Windows Setting stopped working. So, naturally i started checking the web for answers, but couldn't find a solution to the exact problem i was having. I saw countless posts of people saying "Just uninstall / re-install the apps" but at first, I couldn't get my App store app to run. Again, it was just blank after several minutes of waiting. I was able to download it after using the search bar menu on the right side of my computer, and was able to start installing some apps.
So i thought that everything was going to be ok, but then I ran into another problem where some of the apps wouldn't install, and I received an error message with the code/number of 0x80070002.
So, at this point, only a few of my apps are working due to the simple fact that I was able to re-install them, but the others I can't re-install because of this error message.
FIRST SOLUTION:I found a thread online that someone had created with a simple fix to about 2-3 errors on the tiles. This is a simple powershell script to re-register some apps so that they can run again. This worked to fix my app store app and setting, but only that apps. The app update is still not working.
I have another windows live ID, and when I log in with that Id, all my apps works normally! I am out of sorts now.
1. Windows 8 PRO 64 bit recently.
2. My Apps stopped working and all recovery efforts failed to get them working again.
3. Ran several malware and anti-virus programs and still no way to get my Apps working again.
4. I click on an App and the display just returns to the start display.
5. So, I had to reinstall Windows 8 from scratch since none of the "RESTORE" listing would restore.
6. I had not made a "recovery drive" so that was not an option.
I set up my 8.1 installation, played with all the apps, got used to how M$ wants the future to be...and this morning when I turned my PC on, it said it was installing some updates. No biggie.
Now today I am having a bad time with some of the Apps. Skype for example(though this seems to be a known issue?) loads for about 4 seconds then CTS(CrashToStart). Photos will let me look around for about ten seconds, then CTS. Reading List, CTS soon as it looks loaded.
I have tried re-installing the apps, to no avail. or a hotfix will be released, because a refresh would be a sucky option just for it to break again.
