When I was on Windows 8 I could install an app from the store and it would automatically put a tile for it on the start screen. After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. Is there any way to have a tile automatically put on the start screen after install with 8.1?

I installed Windows 8 with the program PWBOOT in USB disk drive and some of the apps in the metro Start Screen they didn't installed. Also the Windows store app is missing so I can't download the apps from the Windows 8 store. What should I do to bring em there? I also have a Windows 8 disc. Can I write em without deleting all the third party desktop apps? If so then how?

View 3 Replies View RelatedHow do I remove (from the start screen) the text at the bottom that says, on mine "13 new apps insalled". I have opened them up, that way I was hoping it would go away, but it wont. This happened when I installed the Windows 8.1 update 1, yesterday.

It also says "new" at the right side of every app. I rather not have it like this at all. I know what new apps I have installed already.
This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.
About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
why Microsoft pushed these Store Apps out and then screwed them up? I have some installed which work fine, but when trying to install others - they won't open. are being offered by Microsoft but there seems to be no solid explanation.This along with the real mess up on Update 1 for many users make me wonder who is in control of Windows.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter 23 Windows updates were installed a few days ago (to Windows 8.1 PC) I noticed a couple of things
1. Most of the 3rd party programs I had added to start screen had disappeared
2. Most of the Windows Accessories had disappeared from 'Apps' screen under 'Windows Accessories' (this affected all users on the PC). See screenshot (only Notepad remaining).
I found that most of the 3rd party programs were still installed, so just re-did 'pin to start' on those.
I checked one of missing accessories, Snipping Tool, and the exe file still exists in Windows/System32 folder. I tried creating a shortcut and copying to Start Menu/Programs folder, but then appears under 'S' rather than Windows Accessories!
Unfortunately I don't have a restore point that I can go back to and don't want to 'refresh' Windows install (as would lose installed 3rd party applications).
How I can restore Windows Accessories (or has experienced similar issue after updates)?
My upgrade from 7 Pro to 8 Pro was smooth.
I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.

But I have realized that, after having uninstalled some of them I didn't like, if I go to "Your Applications" and select "Applications not installed in this computer" I still see them like in a kind of "History" (like in the Internet browsers)

In my Desktop window I can see my files.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAs I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. I can search for it, then right-click on it, and click on "Pin to Start" and it creates a tile on my Start screen, but I want it to create a new tile by default when I install an app, and it has stopped doing that!!!!

I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop

So there's my start screen and as you can see, the only program that is not Windows' built-in is Skype but actually I've installed several programs. The problem is, the installed programs don't appear on the start screen, like what windows 8.0 did. They showed on the app screen. My windows is MSDN 8.1 Pro.

I spent a dramatic amount of time referencing 2-3 resources for each service I disabled and have had no issues up until now. I disabled a few in a row without restarting and managed to forget which they were. this has caused two issues If I can't/don't - the end result will be me having to reset them all to default, go through them one by one again - AND STILL not know which was the one(s) that caused my problem(s) which will risk the same thing happening again.
1) I set an account picture to my Microsoft.net account for windows 8.1x64 (the one that pops up when you turn on your PC and have to enter your password right after the lock screen but before windows) and after a restart, it disappears and goes back to the default grey square with a white outline of an avatar)
2) all my installed programs disappeared on the start screen! It's literally blank. I didn't have much due to it being a fairly new install but they all disappeared including PC settings and metro store (the two metro apps I had left). I checked if the apps still worked (mumble for example because it also disappeared) and they did, but if you go under program data/start menu/programs etc, all the folders with the app shortcuts in them are gone!
I tried to reinstall mumble; and it reinstalled fine, but still NO folder w shortcut being placed in the start menu therefore nothing being put on the start/apps screen. What on earth could be doing this service wise?
