Apr 21, 2014When I boot my machine, I can't see all my installed apps and also can't search them. Please see attached picture.
In my Desktop window I can see my files.

Aug 19, 2013My upgrade from 7 Pro to 8 Pro was smooth.
I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.

But I have realized that, after having uninstalled some of them I didn't like, if I go to "Your Applications" and select "Applications not installed in this computer" I still see them like in a kind of "History" (like in the Internet browsers)

Nov 12, 2013When I was on Windows 8 I could install an app from the store and it would automatically put a tile for it on the start screen. After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. Is there any way to have a tile automatically put on the start screen after install with 8.1?

Apr 9, 2014How do I remove (from the start screen) the text at the bottom that says, on mine "13 new apps insalled". I have opened them up, that way I was hoping it would go away, but it wont. This happened when I installed the Windows 8.1 update 1, yesterday.
Here is a picture of it : (look at the bottom)
It also says "new" at the right side of every app. I rather not have it like this at all. I know what new apps I have installed already.
Uninstall Windows 8 Pre-installed Apps?
Dec 6, 2012I'm using Classic Shell to navigate and I go to the Apps folder. I have tons of apps installed it seams, Weather, Video, Travel, netflix etc.. i don't need any of these and wish to completely remove them from my system. I suspect i should be able to do this from Programs and Features and turning windows features on and off but I don't know where these apps reside.. I can't seem to be able to find any of them in the Windows features area. I also want to uninstall any unneeded apps that show up in the metro start page thing. Not just disable them, or unpin them.. I don't want them on my system at all.

Feb 13, 2014I seem to be having this issue return every reboot.
When ever I type something (anything) into the store search, it instantly redirects to my start screen.
/sfc scannow fixes the issue but literally it returns that same day for whatever reason & I have tried the troubleshooter, re-registering the store app & done this sfc scan about 3 times now and just getting bored of it.. Having to use the browser version of the store just sucks..

Jul 15, 2014I have uninstalled "HP Coolsense" from my PC and can't find a reference to it anywhere. But it still shows up in my windows search (the one that shows up from the right) . . with an icon and everything (unfortunately I can't snip that but I could the error that comes up, which is attached).
Is there a way to refresh this? I can't right-click on the entry either--it doesn't do anything.
It isn't:
in the list of installed programs
in the registry (I searched for "coolsense" FWIW).
In the "all program" section of the metro menu
I was thinking this was a Windows Search/Indexing issue--I normally leave that off, but I turned it off and it rebuilt my index and it's still there.

Feb 8, 2014I have used the MPUI video viewer for several years on Windows 7 and Windows 8.0 without any problem.Last week I installed Windows 8.1 on my Lenovo laptop, and since that time, MPUI does not work. So I figured that maybe MPUI is no longer compatible with Windows 8.1, so I'll download a different media player from the Store.
I downloaded and tried PressPlayer, Media_Player and Quick Media Player, none of which will play the videos that I downloaded from YouTube.
The media players just say that this video cannot be played. MPUI displays the initial picture from the video, but doesn't proceed like it did previously.why my videos stopped working after I installed Windows 8.1.?

and it got installed correctly, and seemed to work asking for a reboot that I did
The problem: I run into a BSOD and I believe it is due to this software (safe mode works ok)
So, as I try to unistall, and the uninstaller is called from "ADD or REMOVE PROGRAMS", all I get is again the message: "Warning : Cannot run on this system"
And of course, here there is not compatibility mode wizard .. How can I complete uninstall and clear this?

After the upgrade, I have observed that many softwares that are actually installed on the system are not listed in the apps list, such as Microsoft office, autocad, freemake, etc. It becomes really inconvenient to open any new file of these software.

Sep 13, 2013I was working on desktop mode and suddenly my screen went black. After about 4 seconds everything returned to normal but when I went to the Start screen all of my application tiles were missing. Except for Desktop & Store tiles, all the others had disappeared. I tried to search the missing apps and pin it to Start but it cannot be found. They wont even show in All apps.
I don't think the apps are deleted because from desktop I can open image/audio files with Photos and Music app.
Not sure if the problem maybe a result of me accidently changing the AppData folder to visible a couple of minutes earlier.

They are not on the start menu, nor are they shown among "All Apps". I did some digging around and managed to find the folders these apps are stored in, but which file launches each app. I went to the App Store to reinstall them, but in each case the App Store told me I already have it installed. Apr 5, 2014I have a couple of 4GB usb pen drives and a 16 GB ADATA one.
When I want to boot from the Linux I have installed in the pen drive, do I have to go to F2, enter the bios and set it to boot from USB or can I tap F12 and do it that way. I have used the 3 major installers, Linux Live USB installer, UNetbootin and USB Universal Installer and cannot get Ubuntu or any distro to boot from this drive. I have formatted it as FAT 32 not NTFS.
I had some success booting from the 4GB pen drives with some distros but not always.
I installed Zorin OS which was great but it started to ask for a password which was never mentioned in the process so I had to delete it.
The question is, am I booting wrong to be making so many errors? I have a Win 8.1 OS with 6 GB ram.
I have 3 4GB pen drives and a 16 GB drive. The 16 is an ADATA and the others are Sandisk.
All I want is a live USB with persistence for updates. I found Ubuntu the easiest and Zorin equal to it except for the password issue.

Oct 28, 2013Basically I had the original "user" in control panel that I used when getting my gateway laptop and I decided to make a new user with admin privileges for no apparent real reason and then I ended up removing the old user account.
Once I did this, a bunch of programs that I installed with my original user account stopped opening, so I uninstalled them and re installed them and they still aren't opening. They just sit in task manager and don't open - is there anything I can do to fix this or is my best bet to reformat [which I could do, but I have a lot of files and I don't have a backup external apart from online which would take a long time to back up with cause of uploading etc].

Jan 20, 2014i recently lost a computer(mother board failure)but the hard drive is in tact and i can access with a SATA to usb device. have another computer up and running win 8. i am wondering how i find and transfer user specific data for instance i have a typing tutor program my wife and i both use we have different user names and have progressed differently. once i reload applications what do i need to move from the old hard drive to restore those applications to the earlier state with all user data, id, preferences, application progress etc.is this data located in each applications folder or stored in separate locations throughout win 8

Feb 23, 2013This problem happens to me right after the installation of Stardock's Start8 or another app called StartIsBack. It could be those 2 apps or it could be something else I don't know.
The problem is, after a reboot, all of a sudden, the icons lose their image and they just become blank white files, if I right click on a file for example to Run As Administrator or anything else, the whole context menu doesn't appear and Explorer just freezes until I force restart
This happened to me in 8 diff. formats / fresh install I finally gave up and just reverted back to Windows 7. Could it be those start menu replacement apps or perhaps some dodgy windows updates?

Nov 5, 2012i had a bunch of images of a chest of drawers i wanted to sell. On my windows 7 PC all the previews showed the images sideways (landscape when they needed to be viewed in portrait). this is not a problem - expected behavior.
On the windows 8 PC all the images appeared portrait and in the correct orientation. images looked perfect. i understand that windows 8 reads the exif data and autorotates the images on previews and in the galleries. a neat trick.
On the windows 8 PC i put an ad on the website that i wanted to sell the drawers, and when i selected the images they previewed portrait in the file browser too. when uploaded the images all came out sideways (landscape) on the website.
this might seem like user error or a rudimentary problem at first, and trust me i have many years as a system admin under my belt, it is going to cause many problems of a similar nature for every user that touches it.
Windows 8 leads you to believe that your images are correctly oriented firstly, and then does not provide an easy way to adjust and save them even if you do know that they need to be adjusted. even in the windows photo viewer on the desktop (non metro viewer) you can rotate an image as much as you like with the buttons and it will not auto save it like it does in Win7.
In Win7 you could see that the image needs adjustment and its a good prompt for you to action, so you open it, rotate it, and it is automatically saved by the photo viewer so then whatever you do with it, it will be oriented correctly.
what i find absolutely crazy is that windows knows the image needs to be rotated, but does not save the image after it autorotates it, so it lulls you into a false sense of security.
